Samsung Galaxy S6 And S6 Edge Expected To Receive Android 5.1 Update In June

According to an OS Upgrade report published by Canadian phone company Rogers Wireless, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones are expected to receive the Android 5.1 software update next month. Since Rogers Wireless is expecting an Android 5.1 update before the end of June, it means many other phone carriers will also likely offer the upgrade around the same time or earlier.

The Android 5.1 software update release timeframe may be subject to change though. Towards the bottom of the OS Upgrade report, Rogers says that keeping the dates accurate is its top priority. However, Rogers pointed out “sometimes, things change beyond our control so all dates listed are subject to change.”

What features will be added to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge as part of the Android 5.1 update? The update reportedly includes the Guest Mode feature and the ability to take RAW photos. Google GOOGL +0.18% added Guest Mode and the ability to capture RAW photos in Android 5.0 Lollipop, but many Galaxy S6 owners were not happy that their devices did not receive those capabilities as of yet.

Guest Mode lets someone else use your smartphone, but they will not be granted access to your photos and personal data. The new version of Android reportedly has a notifications feature that will let you swipe up to minimize incoming messages. Google also fixed several bugs and added memory performance improvements in Android 5.1, which will hopefully be passed over to Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones. It is unknown if Samsung will add other TouchWiz features on top of Android 5.1.

There is also a chance that some carriers will skip over Android 5.1 and offer Android 5.1.1 instead, reported FORBES colleague Gordon Kelly. T-Mobile surprisingly offered an Android 5.1.1 over-the-air update to a Galaxy S6 Edge owner on the XDA Developers Forum a couple of weeks ago, who posted a video that showed proof. The video proved that Android 5.1.1 fixes a major memory leak issue, which has plagued Android Lollipop since it launched in November. Apparently, the stock version of Android Lollipop is unable to free up memory as certain apps are opened and closed — which is causing the devices to become slower. We know that Android 5.1 contains minor improvements, but Android 5.1.1 is highly anticipated because it fixes the memory leak altogether.

Below is a screenshot of the Rogers OS Upgrade report. It is also worth pointing out that the expected availability of Android 5.1.1 for the Google Nexus 4, 5 and 6 is “coming soon.”
