Facebook rolls out instant articles to all iOS users and announces an Android beta

Five months after introducing its fast-loading instant articles into the News Feed, Facebook is now rolling out the format to all iPhone users, the company said today. Speaking at The Wall Street Journal's WSJD Conference in Laguna Beach, California, Facebook's Chris Cox said thousands of articles a day will now be published as instant articles. Facebook will also test the format in a public beta for Android users that launches today, said Cox, Facebook's chief product officer. Instant articles for Android will become widely available later this year.
Facebook is also adding new partners to the instant article program, including Vox Media (parent of The Verge), SlateThe Huffington Post, and The Daily Mail. They join the company's original nine partners, which include The New York TimesBuzzFeed, and The Atlantic. Publishers' interest reflects the enormous percentage of traffic that Facebook drives to their properties — and their fears over being left out if the faster-loading stories soon crowd out the regular old URLs that have been their lifeblood for the past several years.
PUBLISHERS ARE SCRAMBLING TO SUPPORT THE NEW FORMAT
Facebook says readers are more likely to share instant articles, and that they load 10 times faster than normal links. Articles that are shared more often typically rank higher in the News Feed, which helps explain why publishers are scrambling to rewrite their content management systems to support the format. Meanwhile, rival quick-loading formats have been introduced by Apple, through Apple News, and Google, with Amplified Mobile Pages.
But it's Facebook that dominates news reading these days, and the breadth of publishers that have agreed to support the new format is telling. Here they are: BillboardBilly Penn,The BlazeBleacher ReportBreitbart, Brit + Co, Business Insider, Bustle, CBS News, CBS Sports, CNETComplexCountry LivingCrackedDaily DotE! NewsElite Daily,Entertainment Weekly, Gannett, Good HousekeepingFox Sports, Harper's Bazaar,Hollywood LifeHollywood ReporterIJ ReviewLittle ThingsMashableMental Floss, mindbodygreen, MLB, MoviePilot, NBA, NY PostThe Onion, Opposing Views, People,Pop SugarRare, Refinery 29Rolling StoneSeventeenTIMEUproxxUS Magazine,USA TodayVarietyThe Verge (hey that's us), and The Weather Channel.
Instant articles are denoted in the feed by a lightning bolt next to them. You'll see them if you follow any of the publishers above, or if a friend shares them. While they load faster than normal articles in part by stripping out advertising and tracking code that runs on many web pages, they also can include various custom visual elements, including 3D maps and photos that can be browsed by tilting your phone.
Correction, 1:30 p.m.Clarified that while instant articles for Android will become widely available later this year, the public beta will launch today.

Facebook Launches TechPrep To Grow The Pipeline By Empowering Black And Latino Parents

Facebook is launching TechPrep, a new initiative in partnership with McKinsey & Company, to offer resources like tutorials, videos and games for parents to help their kids pursue careers in computer programming. Although TechPrep is generally a resource hub for learners, parents and guardians interested in careers in tech, Facebook is first focusing on communities where there are high populations of black and latino people.
“Underrepresented minorities, who by 2050 will comprise more than 50 percent of our population, are disproportionately lost at every transition point in their STEM, including computer science and programming, studies and careers,” Congressperson Eddie Bernice Johnson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, said in a statement. “When so much of our present and our future is dependent on computer science and programming, we cannot afford to continue hemorrhaging so much talent. We must all work together to leverage our respective strengths and resources to tackle this issue.”
The idea for TechPrep came from a research study, conducted by Facebook and McKinsey, about the participation of underrepresented minorities in computer programming careers. They found:
  • 77% of parents/guardians don’t know how to help their child pursue degrees in CS
  • For lower-income and non-college graduate parents/guardians, that figure increases to 83%
“What we see around coding and programming, is that there are some communities in which, because the parents’ capacity is not there — the guardian —that we’re losing whole generations of people who could be guided into these really lucrative, engaging, satisfying careers,” Facebook Global Director of Diversity Maxine Williams told me. “For most of them and for us, we really need to focus on how we build the capacity of these influencers. They are the most positive people in terms of how they view their children’s potential. and we share that belief.”
There’s no harm in trying to grow the pipeline of diverse candidates, but the lack of diversity in tech is due to more than just a pipeline problem. This year, Facebook hired 36 black people and 73 hispanic people, compared to 603 white people, according to its 2015 EEO–1 report. In total, only 2% of Facebook’s workforce is black, 3% of it is hispanic and — no surprises here — 55% of Facebook is white. Meanwhile, an estimated 4.5% of college graduates who received degrees in CS were black and 6.5% were Hispanic, according to data from the Computing Research Association. And that’s just one year’s worth of graduates, meaning that there are loads more of eligible candidates from underrepresented backgrounds. So, why aren’t they getting jobs at Facebook and other tech companies?
“We’re trying to get more than the 4.5%,” Williams told me. “Because when you start at 4.5%, everybody who ever got a computer science degree would have to agree to come to Facebook for our number to be at 4.5%. And that’s just not going to happen realistically.“
That’s what Facebook ultimately hopes to achieve with TechPrep: increase the number of people of color who pursue degrees in computer science and engineering. That being said, Williams recognizes that the lack of diversity in tech “is absolutely more than a pipeline problem.”
“We are doing short, medium and long term initiatives,” Williams said. “So for instance, if you think about the fact that we launched our managing bias training. Bias is something that’s critical in this and it’s not a pipeline issue.” She later added, “We are doing a number of different things, but you can’t do those things and succeed if you don’t also get a more robust pipeline coming in. So it takes everything together.”

Yahoo reaches search deal with Google after loosening Microsoft ties

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer was previously a Google exec. (GeekWire File Photo)

Updated below with Microsoft statement.
Yahoo just announced a search deal with Google, taking advantage an earlier revision of its longtime Microsoft search pact that gave Yahoo the ability to use alternative services to power its Internet search and advertising services.
The deal between Google and Yahoo was disclosed a short time ago in a regulatory filing by Yahoo. Under the arrangement, Google will provide web search results, search ads and image search services for an unspecified number of Yahoo user queries, on both desktop and mobile platforms.
According to the regulatory filing, the non-exclusive deal allows Yahoo to continue working with Microsoft, as well.
Here’s an excerpt from the filing describing Yahoo’s agreement with Google.
On October 19, 2015, Yahoo! Inc., a Delaware corporation (“Yahoo”), and Google Inc., a Delaware corporation (“Google”), entered into a Google Services Agreement (the “Services Agreement”). The Services Agreement is effective as of October 1, 2015 and expires on December 31, 2018. Pursuant to the Services Agreement, Google will provide Yahoo with search advertisements through Google’s AdSense for Search service (“AFS”), web algorithmic search services through Google’s Websearch Service, and image search services. The results provided by Google for these services will be available to Yahoo for display on both desktop and mobile platforms. Yahoo may use Google’s services on Yahoo’s owned and operated properties (“Yahoo Properties”) and on certain syndication partner properties (“Affiliate Sites”) in the United States (U.S.), Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Australia and New Zealand.
Under the Services Agreement, Yahoo has discretion to select which search queries to send to Google and is not obligated to send any minimum number of search queries. The Services Agreement is non-exclusive and expressly permits Yahoo to use any other search advertising services, including its own service, the services of Microsoft Corporation or other third parties.
The regulatory filing notes that Yahoo and Google “have agreed to certain procedures with the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice” to review the agreement, “including delaying the implementation of the Services Agreement in the U.S. in order to provide the DOJ with a reasonable period of review.” Antitrust problems nixed an earlier ad deal reached by Google and Yahoo in 2008.
Yahoo, which just reported quarterly earnings that fell short of analyst expectations, says in a news release that the deal provides Yahoo “with additional flexibility to choose among suppliers of search results and ads. Google’s offerings complement the search services provided by Microsoft, which remains a strong partner, as well as Yahoo’s own search technologies and ad products.”
Yahoo’s deal with Microsoft, which was reached by then-CEOs Carol Bartz and Steve Ballmer more than six years ago, was revised by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella earlier this year. The revision ended the exclusive arrangement between Yahoo and Microsoft on the desktop, allowing Yahoo to explore partnering with others, as well. Mayer was a Google executive before joining Yahoo as CEO.
Google continues to dominate the U.S. search market, with nearly 64 percent of queries as of last month, compared to 20.7 percent for Microsoft and 12.6 percent for Yahoo, according to the latest ComScore data. Yahoo’s share has slipped significantly since striking the original deal with Microsoft.
Update, 3 p.m.: Microsoft offered this statement in response to our inquiry: “We remain committed to the Yahoo syndication partnership and will continue to serve the majority of Yahoo traffic as outlined in our contract extension. Yahoo is a valued partner and we look forward to continuing to serve our advertising customers through the Bing Ads marketplace.”

Spotify Lands On Apple App Store Top Spot As Tim Cook Touts Apple Music

There was still steam coming off of the headlines announcing that Apple Music's subscriptions have already soared to a third of the size of Spotify's premium users, but before the headlines could cool, app trackers have reported that Spotify has finally hit the top spot in the Apple App Store.
News of Spotify's latest landmark doesn't take anything away from the success of Apple Music. It evidences the growth of Spotify.
Spotify has earned the banking details of 20 million music lovers and has gotten about 55 million others to sit through ads to enjoy the streaming music service for free.
The months-old Apple Music service has amassed an impressive 15 million total users, about 6.5 million of which pay for the premium service. The figures on Apple Music's success were shared by Apple CEO Tim Cook on Monday.
"We have music experts, just like the DJ when we were growing up...that are deciding what's next," Cook said. "It brings the art back in music."
There still a lot of land to cover to catch up with Spotify. And Spotify doesn't appear to be slowing down.
Spotify had hovered around the number three spot in the Apple App store in the US since the start of the year. However, Spotify finally hit the top of US' charts for top grossing apps this month.
The two services are a lot alike, though there have been complaints about the complexity of Apple Music's interface and reports of bugs. Meanwhile, the more established Spotify enjoys an interface that has benefited from a stream of updates to its mobile and desktop apps.
One of Apple Music's big selling points is that it has playlists curated by musicians and experts, though Spotify uses a similar curation model.
"I'm finding personally that I'm discovering a whole lot of music that I wasn't listening to before," he said. "I think it's fabulous. And to have over 15 million on there, and 6.5 million in the paid category, I'm really happy about it, and I think the runway here is really good."

6 Reasons You Should Switch From iOS to Android

The differences between Android and iOS have been getting awfully slim lately. With each new software release, the two mobile operating systems look more and more alike, with each of them actively borrowing the best features from the other.
As a result, though I’ve been an unapologetic iPhone user since the iPhone 5 came out in 2012, I’ve recently been casting some glances Android’s way. And with the advent of some cool enhancements in Android 6.0 Marshmallow and rapidly improving hardware (from Google and other vendors), I’ve become convinced that now just might be the perfect time to switch from iPhone to Android.
Now, before you break out the torches and pitchforks, consider these six reasons why I’m thinking of making the switch.

1. Choice of phones

Apple gives you just two choices of smartphones: the 4.7-inch iPhone 6s (or 6) or the 5.5-inch iPhone 6s Plus (or 6 Plus). With Android, you have a huge choice of phones from a wide variety of manufacturers.
For starters, Google itself recently unveiled the Nexus 5X (built by LG) and the Nexus 6P (from Huawei), the company’s answer to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, respectively. These devices are comparable in quality to Apple’s high-end phones, but at a fraction of the price.
If those Nexus devices aren’t for you, you can still choose from aseemingly endless selection of phones, ranging from high-end devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Motorola’s Moto X, and the Sony Xperia Z5 to more budget-friendly devices like the super-cheap-but-still-excellent Moto G for $180.

2. Google Now on Tap

One of Android’s best features is Google Now. Google’s virtual personal assistant — yes, the equivalent of Siri — aims to give you the right information at the right time. And with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, that service is even better.
Google announced Google Now on Tap back in May at Google I/O and showed it off again on the new Nexus devices in September. The advantage of Google Now on Tap: It delivers all sorts of contextual information without having to leave the app you’re in.
For example, say you and a friend are chatting in Google Hangouts about going to dinner. Holding down the home button will give you an at-a-glance look at the restaurant’s rating, an option to call the restaurant or even book a table, in addition to creating a calendar event and getting directions to the venue — all without leaving Hangouts.
Google Now on Tap is a killer feature, and it’s one that the iPhone just cannot match (at least, not yet).

3. Standard connectors

While Apple is still using its own proprietary Lightning cables to power its iOS devices, Android phones are embracing more standard technologies such as USB Type-C.
Both of Google’s newest Nexus phones, for example, have USB Type-C ports that provide fast charging. And the USB Type-C cord is reversible so (like iPhone users with their Lightning cables) Android users no longer have to worry about which way they’re plugging in their phones.
Like the current microUSB cords that power most Android devices on the market today, the USB Type-C cables will soon be everywhere and, as a result, they’ll be much cheaper than Apple’s Lightning cables.

4. Improving battery life

One of the biggest gripes I’ve had with Android is how much more quickly the battery seems to drain than the iPhone’s.
If I forget to plug in my iPhone overnight, the battery typically drops only a couple of percentage points. But if I do the same thing with an Android device, it’ll drop 20 to 40 percent overnight. That typically means it’ll die sometime the next morning.
Fortunately, that’s about to change dramatically with Doze, a feature baked into Marshmallow that detects when you’ve left your phone alone for a long period of time. Once your phone is inactive and not moving for a while, the device enters Doze mode, which disables your data network, ignores wake locks, and shuts down all background processing.
It’s basically like going into airplane mode, except it allows a few things like high-priority messages to come through, but for all intents and purposes your phone stops most things from running in exchange for boosting your battery life when your phone is idle for a long period of time.
Then there’s App Standby, a service that basically stops apps you haven’t used in several hours from running processes in the background if your phone isn’t plugged into the charger.
Combined, Doze and App Standby should work wonders on your Android phone’s battery life, which when coupled with the fact that many Android devices include larger batteries than the iPhone, could help your phone last longer than its iOS counterpart.

5. Improving cameras

The new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices have amazing cameras that shoot high-quality pictures and HD video. But they aren’t unique in that regard.
Several Android devices take pictures and video just as well as the iPhone, and some might even be better. According to DxOMark, a website that runs cameras and mobile devices through industry-standard image quality tests, several Android phones performed better than the iPhone 6s and 6 Plus. (The 6s Plus has not yet been tested.)
Point being, while the iPhone once had a distinct advantage over Android phones when it came to camera quality, that’s no longer true.

6. Better screens

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus both have so-called Retina HD displays — but their resolution still lags behind several Android phones. The iPhone 6s Plus, for example, has a full-HD 1080p display. But the new Nexus 6P boasts a 1440p display; some Android phones like Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium actually have 4K Ultra HD displays built in.
With that kind of resolution, Android phones can be way better than iPhones for games and high-def video. Sure, such high resolutions can be hard to discern on a 5- or 6-inch screen. But the difference is there.

The bottom line

Android has always been a powerful operating system. But with the release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow — the best Android operating system to date — and the latest hardware from Google, Samsung, Sony, and others, now might just be the perfect time for even settled iPhone users to give Android a very serious look.

Google encroaches on Microsoft turf with “free” Apps for Work promo

Who can resist the allure of free? Especially when you consider enterprise deployments that ultimately involve hundreds if not thousands of dollars per annum. Knowing too well that line of thinking, Google has cooked up a way to entice businesses away from their pricey Microsoft and IBM enterprise agreements (EA). Google will allow such customers to use Apps for Work for free while they are bidding their time for the EA to run its course, giving users some time to get familiar with the new Google work environment at no extra cost.
The enterprise is seen as the next big, not to mention lucrative, frontier for tech companies. Microsoft has its Office 365 and even Apple has been eying a spot in that market. Google has had its Google Apps for Work for years and more recently started to push its Android for Work strategy. But enterprise deployments do not come cheap and EAs are set up to entice customers to renew their contracts with the promise of lowering prices. Google knows it is facing an uphill batter in trying to get users away from those, and so it tries to leverage the power of "free".
In a nutshell, Google itself will be shouldering the fee of using Google Apps for Work while waiting for an existing contract to run out. And even after that, the search giant will try to help defray deployment costs and set the customer up with a Google for Work Partner. While Google's announcement doesn't exactly name names, its promo page does mention Microsoft and IBM, two of the biggest players in that market.
That said, free here isn't completely free. Although Google won't charge for Apps for Work until the end of the EA, Google for Work deployment does cap out at $25 per person, so there will still be some money to be spent. After that grace period, Google for Work will run for $5 to $10 per person per month.
Google Apps for Work consists of office software such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive as well as communication platforms such as Gmail and Hangouts.
