Here's how to see the secret list that determines what ads you see on Facebook

If you've ever seen an ad on your Facebook page and wondered how that particular ad wound up on your computer screen, there's an easy way to see all the things Facebook thinks you're interested in. 

This list of ad preferences is "created for you based on things like your profile information, actions you take on Facebook and websites and apps you use off Facebook," the social media platform explains. Preferences are broken down into categories like technology, people, and shopping. 

While many of your preferences will likely be things you are actually are interested in, we bet some of the preferences will seem totally random and surprising. Who knew you were so interested in a tiny town in Norway you've never actually heard of before. 

Here's how to see your own list.

First, head to Facebook and select the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Next, click "Settings."

Then click "Ads" on the left-hand side of the screen.

Click to edit "Ads based on my preferences."

You'll see an explanation for your list of preferences. Click "Visit Ad Preferences."

Next, you'll see a list of categories. Click on any of them to expand and see an itemized list of your preferences.

Here's my expanded view of "Sports and Outdoors." As an avid skier, my chairlift and après-ski preferences make perfect sense, but I've never seen a wrestling match and know nothing about the sport, so those preferences seem odd to me.

Apparently, I clicked a wrestling ad online once, so Facebook added the sport to my preferences. To remove an unwanted preference, just click the "X" next to the one you want to delete.
