12 Significant Digital Marketing Stats From the Last Week

No entertainment brand had a better weekend than Jurassic World, and we have the social stats that show why the dinosaur flick knocked it out of the park. Here are 12 intriguing data points from the last week.

1. Jurassic World raked in nearly $524 million globally, making it the first movie to surpass a half billion dollars during its opening weekend, and social media may be helping the film soar. According to Moviepilot, the summer blockbuster added 353,000 Facebook fans last week, when it also generated 1.7 million tweets and 654,000 retweets.

2. What's more, per Moviepilot, Jurassic World's official trailer was viewed 5.8 million times last week on YouTube. In total, the action thriller's clip—watch it below—has now been seen a whopping 66 million times since it was uploaded on Nov. 25. Kudos to Universal Pictures' social team behind all of these metrics.

3. Sixty-three percent of Snapchat's monthly users are between the ages of 13 and 24. Industry players have estimated more than 200 million people a month are using the mobile app. Check out Adweek's cover story about Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel for this week's issue focused on the upcoming Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where Spiegel will keynote.

4. Facebook today disclosed its best-performing ads last year to Adweek, and here's a number that stuck out: Procter & Gamble's feminine-hygiene brand, Always, ran its thought-provoking #LikeAGirl campaign on the social platform and received 76 million video views, globally.

5. Even though Caitlyn Jenner seemed to take the world by storm with her Vanity Fair cover, she actually rolled out her new identity over the course of weeks—from the Diane Sawyer interview on April 24 to the aforementioned cover on June 1. Such buzz has also benefited small e-commerce players around the globe. According to Terapeak, an eBay-focused insights company, the hundreds of people selling Bruce Jenner memorabilia collectively sold about $20 million worth of merchandise during those five weeks.

6. For Father's Day, Zefr, a YouTube-focused marketing data company, conducted research about baby brands including Pampers, Gymboree, Baby Gap and Gerber. Here's the key takeaway: Pampers has accrued 200 billion views from a total of 7,000 YouTube videos since the site's inception, and that's good for No. 1 in its category.

7. Here is another intriguing finding by Zefr: 94 percent of Baby Gap's videos are created by fans—not the retail clothing company.

8. Splash, an events marketing software maker, processed aggregated client email data to suss out the best times of day to send invitations. The New York-based company discovered that 6 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. are the best times to pitch people with events stuff. The worst time to send invitations is after 5 p.m.

9. Foot traffic to bank branches in the U.K. dropped 6 percent last year thanks to consumers using their mobile apps and Web banking accounts more and more, according to a Guardian story yesterday.

10. Apple Music will pay 71.5 percent of streaming revenues back to content owners, per Re/code. That percentage bests Spotify by 1.5 percentage points, according to Digital Music News.

11. YouTube created 25,000 video game pages for its new mobile and Web platform, YouTube Gaming. While you can't play games on the platform, it shows that Google wants a bigger piece of the ever-growing gaming market.

12. Instagram is getting bigger and bigger with the foodie set. For instance, British chef Jamie Oliver has 2.9 million followers on the social app and gets superb engagement while using the #Recipeoftheday hashtag with images like this:

Lutron Caséta Wireless Lighting Starter Kit review:

hasn't been a very vocal partner of Apple's HomeKit home automation system, but all that changed with this week's retail launch of the $230 Caséta Wireless Lighting Starter Kit. It comes complete with a Siri-enabled Smart Bridge hub, two plug-in light dimmer modules, two remote controls and an iOS app for your phone, tablet and Apple Watch. (UK and Australian availability has yet to be announced, but the US price converts to around £150 or AU$295.)

Although this is just the first piece of HomeKit hardware to see the light of day, it's surprisingly full-featured, responsive and simple to use. I was able to control plug-in lamps with dimmable LEDs using Siri, the mobile app and the Apple Watch with only a couple of minor setbacks. From setting up the hardware to telling Siri to "Turn on the lights," the entire experience was a true pleasure.

$230 is a lot to spend for a couple of dimmers, but Lutron's streamlined HomeKit solution is recommended if you're an iOS adherent looking to dive into home automation.

One hub to rule them all

Lutron's hardware works exceptionally well, but it's the least interesting thing about this kit. We already reviewed the original Lutron Smart Bridge last year with the same two-outlet plug-in dimmers and remotes.

This new HomeKit-exclusive hub looks pretty much the same as, if not identical to, the original. It's a slab of white plastic that connects to your router and helps translate Clear Connect to lighting accessories, so you can dim your LED, halogen and incandescent bulbs, set schedules and more via the companion Lutron Android or iOS app. That's where things start to get interesting.

You can still find the original Smart Bridge hub on Amazon for $120 as a standalone device (although it will be phased out soon) and plug-in dimmer and remote kits for 60 bucks each. That's $240 for the original hub and the same accessories -- $10 more than this new kit with the HomeKit-specific hub, two dimmers and two remotes. I really liked the original hub, but this second generation one offers a lot more features (but only if you're an iOS devotee).

Lutron told us that this kit would be in Apple Stores throughout North and South America (with the exception of Brazil) as well as on Amazon starting June 2, but we were unable to find them in our local store in Louisville, KY. It wasn't available in any other stores in the surrounding area, nor even in the NY Apple stores as of this writing. The company ended up sending us a kit directly instead. That means that you may not be able to find this kit right away, but it should be en route to an Apple Store near you soon.

Ready, steady, go

Although Lutron has updated its app to account for Siri integration since I reviewed the original hub and accessories, setting everything up works roughly the same as it did before. Connect the Smart Bridge to the router and follow the instructions on the app to pair any accessories. Since this kit comes with two plug-in dimmers and two remotes, I followed the instructions to pair those specific products.

This was really straightforward, with one small exception. To pair the dimmers and the remotes, you have to press and hold their "off" buttons until the LED indicator starts blinking rapidly (as pictured above). If you don't press it in exactly the right spot and in exactly the right way, it won't work. And if you want to reset one of the accessories, you have to follow a series of overly complicated rhythmic button presses that border on ridiculous. Setup was simple otherwise, though.

There are a lot of ways to approach this system, but it's very basic at its core. You can plug up to two lamps into a single module and each module has its own built-in controls. So where you can only control a Belkin WeMo Insight Switch from the WeMo app (or through another software platform, like IFTTT), you can actually turn your lamps on or off and even dim them from the Lutron plug itself. The paired remotes act as an extension of that functionality too.

Then, you have the Lutron app. Forgetting any of the HomeKit features for the moment, the app is very comprehensive, allowing for a whole host of custom schedules and scenes as well as standard on, off and dimmer capabilities. This gives you the opportunity to interact with your lighting whether you're connected to your home network or on a distant cellular or Wi-Fi network.

I particularly liked its geofencing feature; it worked flawlessly. You can set it to automatically turn your lights off when you leave and on when you return and even adjust the distance threshold. There's also an option you can set that will only turn your lights on if you return home after sunset. In general, though, accessing the lights from the plugs, the remotes and the app all work remarkably well. They are reliable, responsive and straightforward, even when I tested with a handful of different dimmable LED brands and models.

GoPro turns focus to drones, virtual reality

GoPro plans to take extreme videos to new extremes with two new future products that will introduce the company into the drone and virtual reality markets.

The camera-maker for adventure enthusiasts plans to roll out a six-camera product later this year that is capable of capturing spherical content, GoPro CEO Nick Woodman said Wednesday during an onstage interview at the Recode Code conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. The products are part of GoPro's efforts to expand its business beyond simply selling cameras for skiers, race drivers and other sports-adventure enthusiasts.

GoPro's Six-Camera Spherical Array is a mounting accessory that will accommodate six Hero4 cameras, capturing high-resolution images and video from different angles. The content can then be stitched together to create a 360-degree virtual reality environment by using Kolor, technology developed by a French virtual reality software maker that GoPro acquired last month.

Enjoying the content will require users to do virtual reality headsets like Oculus, Google Cardboard, and Microsoft's HoloLens. The content can also be viewed on PCs or smartphones using YouTube 360 or Kolor's app.

GoPro is playing catch up with its camera array. For the past two years, Google has offered free online software to create interactive photo-spheres that can be embedded in Google Maps, and the company has its own virtual reality platform, Google Cardboard, to help developers create more VR experiences. Facebook in March said it would support spherical videos on its News Feed and plans to incorporate them into Oculus.

GoPro is also getting into another burgeoning technology by building a quadcopter, or drone. Woodman did not provide any pricing or design details but did say consumers could expect the drone to hit the market in the first half of next year.

A drone is a natural progression for GoPro: drones equipped with the company's cameras are frequently used to record landscapes for real estate companies and film movie sequences.

Sling TV App Now Available for Android TV as Nexus Player Gets Price Cut

With Google I/O kicking off next week, the Android TV platform got itself a nice boost ahead of the developer’s conference, as the Sling TV app is now available on the Google Nexus Player and other Android TV devices.  This adds Android TV to the list of platforms that support Sling, a list that also includes the Amazon Fire TV and the Xbox One.

Aside from the Nexus Player, the app is available on select Sony and Sharp smart

television sets from the 2015 model year.  Anyone who owns one of those devices can get the app for free, and stream content via Sling for only $20 per month, though there are more expensive packages available.  In addition to those packages, consumers can also pay an additional $5 a month for the Deportes Extra a la carte add-on.  This pack includes ESPN Deportes, Univision, UniMas, Univision Deportes, and belN Sports en Espanol as additional channels.

While Sling TV is not yet available for the Chromecast, the company is selling the Nexus Player at 50 percent off, though there is a catch to this deal – you’ll have to prepay for three months’ worth of Sling TV.

Digital marketers in India, Australia more confident about digital roadmap: Survey

Consumers around the world are rapidly embracing digital, but the rate of adoption across Asia is nothing less than staggering, said a survey. Around 63 per cent of marketers believe their organisation's current level of digital marketing proficiency is above average, with just over one in four marketers actually feeling that their expertise ranges from pretty good to high.

The survey conducted by Adobe in association with the CMO Council found that India and Australia take the lead in digital confidence, with 42 per cent of marketers in India and 35 per cent of marketers in Australia giving themselves pretty good to high marks.

The survey stated that overall, confidence is spilling over into a belief that digital is enabling engagement through continuous touch points that connect a brand directly with its customers. Some 66 per cent of respondents say digital is enabling additional touch points and opportunities while nearly half say digital is delivering more cost-effective customer acquisition. Interestingly, 41 per cent believe customer loyalty is improving thanks to digital, and 33 per cent say that digital is improving the customer experience and overall responsiveness.

The confidence is also evident on budget spends. The study stated that 79 per cent of respondents indicate that they have increased budgets in the past 12 months. According to 30 per cent of respondents, 25 to 49 per cent of total marketing budgets has been allocated to digital while 37 per cent say that between 10 and 24 per cent is now earmarked for digital engagements. Among the top spenders, 13 per cent are now spending in excess of 50 per cent of their budgets on digital, but the majority of marketers admit that this increase is really just a slight adjustment, as 35 per cent say the increase has been moderate, and 35 per cent call it slight a increase.

The survey polled a total of 648 marketers across the Asia-Pacific region, including close to 95 India based marketers have been surveyed around areas like their digital strategies, spends, priorities and challenges for the 2015-16 financial year.

However, the study found that countries like China is lagging behind (51 percent believe they need improvement or are lagging behind) and South Korea (45 percent believe they need improvement or are lagging)-markets that have been traditionally held back because of sluggish management support to move away from more traditional advertising centric strategies. The CMO council is the only global network of executives among senior corporate marketing leaders and brand decision-makers across a wide range of global industries. The CMO Council's 8,500-plus members control more than $400 billion in aggregated annual marketing expenditures. In total, the CMO Council and its strategic interest communities include more than 35,000 global executives in more than 110 countries covering multiple industries.

Marketers across APAC also feel that digital strategy has to move beyond just advertisement and communication channel, shifting marketing's focus to digital as business driver. One key challenge for marketers in APAC could be where strategy is being developed and how this strategy is executed. According to more than a quarter of respondents, a global head office develops strategy, but local regions are tasked with leveraging local insights and market knowledge to optimise execution.

Epson PowerLite Pro Cinema LS10000 review:

The epson LS10000 is a technological tour de force that, on paper, can make other projectors seem like shark bait. Its crowning feature is a laser light engine that lets it start up faster than other projectors in its class, never needs to be replaced, and can deliver a picture that rivals the best projectors we've tested.

All that technology comes at a steep price, however, and at the end of the day, the $8,000 LS10000, falls a bit short of other high-end projectors we've tested recently. The less-expensive JVC DLA-X700R beats it in black levels and overall contrast -- the most important aspect of picture quality -- while the more-expensive Sony VPL-VW350ES offers true 4K resolution that can actually be worthwhile on a huge screen.

Both do it with old-fashioned lamps that burn out every 3,000 hours or so, and over the lifespan of the projectors those $300-$500 lamps can add up. But not enough to make a difference to the audience these projectors are aimed at. The LS10000's main draws are superb, balanced picture quality, industry-leading startup time, and high-tech chops. If that's enough for you, it makes perfect sense.

Design

Lasers might obviate the bulb, but the LS10000's body is plenty bulbous anyway. The massive, rounded unit measures 22 inches square and weighs 40 pounds. Its shape puts me in mind of a sci-fi vision: the head of a streamlined combat robot, with a single eye in the center that can retreat behind its motorized cover when powered down.

Matching rounded vents (railgun ports?) appear to either side, and a detachable cover (armor plating?) can conceal the connections around back. Manual overrides are available via a flip-out panel on the side (if you can make it past the exterior defenses).

Epson's remote is decidedly less futuristic but presents a formidable face of its own. A big backlit button exists for direct access to seemingly every function. The menu system is nothing fancy either, filled with esoteric adjustments and nested options that are, unfortunately, par for the projector course. I challenge anyone to find Game mode on the first try.

Epson touts the quiet operation of the laser system, and indeed, during operation the LS10000 was basically silent on my ceiling mount in all settings. Fan noise is not an issue with this projector. Then again, the JVC and Sony were also exceedingly quiet in their home-theater settings, so I don't consider this a significant advantage for the Epson.

Startup time was another story. The LS10000 leapt to life, not quite as quickly as a regular TV, but faster than any lamp-based projector I can remember. It took 26 seconds from pressing the power button to projecting a fully bright, watchable image. The Sony took about that long for any image to appear at all, while the JVC took 45 seconds. In both cases, the picture started out dim and discolored and took around 1:20 to achieve full brightness and color. The Epson also restarted (from on to off to on again) in about 20 seconds, while the others had to go through cool-down periods as long as a minute and a half before being ready to turn on again.

Features

The three main projector types are DLP, LCD, and LCoS, but this Epson is none of the above. Its chips are composed of Liquid Crystal on Quartz, which Epson calls 3LCD Reflective. Of the three ,it comes closest to LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon), and according to Epson offers improved pixel density and improved aperture performance compared to LCD.

Also: frickin' lasers. Most projectors use replaceable bulbs, er, "lamps," that last around 3,000 hours before needing to be replaced. The LS10000 uses two blue lasers that last between 17,000 (in Power Consumption: High mode) and 30,000 hours (in ECO mode) and cannot be replaced. One blue laser creates the blue light, while the other blue laser hits a yellow phosphor, which is then split to create red and green. Hence RGB, the foundation of all color in video.

In addition to improved lifespan, lasers allow the LS10000 to start up and achieve full brightness faster than lamp-based projectors, stay quieter, and respond faster to changes in brightness than a typical iris. The LS10000 isn't as bright as some lamp-based units but still plenty bright for darkened home theaters.

Epson says the combination of 3LCD Reflective and lasers delivers "unprecedented black levels, displaying zero lumens during full-black scenes." Check out the Picture Quality section for what we say. Ditto for Epson's "4K Enhancement," which shifts each pixel diagonally, and adds various levels of edge enhancement, detail enhancement, interpolation and marketing magic to approximate 4K.

For more in-depth info on all the LS10000's newfangled technology, check out Geoff Morrison's report from its introduction at CEDIA 2014.
