Next iPhone to ditch headphone jack: reports

Iphone 6S and 6S Plus

NEW YORK— Is the headphone jack on the iPhone going the way of the iPod? According to the latest rumors, the answer is yes.
Although the latest iPhone 6S and 6S Plus are bound to be popular gifts this holiday season, that hasn't stopped the Internet from speculating on what will be in Apple's next iPhone. According to Japanese blog Macotakara, Apple will be getting rid of the 3.5 mm headphone jack that has been standard on iPhones and other devices for years.
Macotakara has been accurate in the past, most recently correctly predicting that the iPhone 6 would come in a 4.7-inch version and 5.5-inch 6 Plus variant.
According to the report's "reliable source," Apple will be replacing the included Earpodswith those that plug in through the device's Lightning port. Users could also useBluetooth wireless headphones, which have become increasingly more popular over the years. Those with older headphones will likely still be able to use them, though they would likely need an adapter that plugs into the Lightning port.
The move is said to allow Apple to make the next iPhone even thinner, which is in line with what the company has traditionally done following an "S" year like this past one was.
As usual with early rumors like this one, Apple has remained mum on the topic.
The move to change the headphone jack or ports on the iPhone is also not unprecedented for Apple. The first iPhone in 2007 had a recessed headphone jack that was deeper into the phone than most devices and required an adapter to work with many headphones. This part of the iPhone was largely criticized by critics and users and Apple returned to a standard port with the iPhone 3G in 2008.
The company switched to the now standard Lightning port in 2012 with the iPhone 5 after using the larger 30-pin connector on its iPhones, iPads and iPods. That move was initially met with a tepid response, though users and accessory makers quickly adapted.
The headphone rumor is one of many early iPhone 7 theories. Others that have popped up in recent days include an Apple patent that would allow the phone to be used with gloves (something rival Android and Windows phones can already do) and that the company has a patent to make the phones more water resistant.
If recent history holds true Apple will likely unveil the next iPhone in the fall of 2016, with plenty of rumors and speculation happening between now and then.

Apple Ready To Gamble On New iPhone Technology

Not content with the 3D touch interface that was added to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus screens, Apple looks set to move to a new screen technology in 2017′s iPhone.

There has been a consistent build up of leaks, rumors, and suggestions from the supply chain that a switch away from the LCD technology currently used by Apple for its iPhone screens is on the cards. Moving to OLED screens would allow for more power efficient displays that have a wider viewing angle, better color reproduction, and a more vibrant display. Apple has been reluctant in the past to make this switch because of worries around the lifespan of OLED screens.

Apple must be confident that these issues are now answered (presumably with technology along the lines of that detailed in its patents using photodiodes and varying the anode pitch in OLED screens). Nikkei Asian Review (via Patently Apple) is reporting that Apple has notified its supply chain of the upcoming switch to OLED for iPhones released in the 2017/2018 smartphone season.

This would point to the adoption of OLED screens for the presumptively tilted iPhone 7S. Going with the 7S as the debut handset makes a certain amount of logistical sense. The external design cues of the iPhone are generally updated in even-numbered years with the cardinal numbered iPhone models, while the internal technology and specifications tend to favour the iPhone ‘S’ models.
That is illustrated in the latest models from Cupertino. The iPhone 6 introduced the new design with the curve edges and taper on the screen, the change in size from 4 inches to 4.7 and 5.5 inches, and the thinner design. The hardware changes that included the addition of 3D Touch, increased memory, and a larger camera sensor, were all seen on the iPhone 6S.

This is obviously not a hard and fast definition, more a rule of thumb, but it gives each team a two-year development cycle between handsets to implement the changes. Given the 6S has just seen a notable change in screen technology with 3D Touch, the idea that the next change will happen in twoi years time, on the iPhone 7S, makes a lot of sense from a logistical point of view and fits in with Apple’s previous rollouts of new hardware and technology.

iPhone 7 Mini: critics divided on Apple's compact iPhone concept

New breed of smaller iPhone 7 could land next year alongside larger siblings

Rumours continue to circulate that Apple intends to bring out three devices next year rather than just two. Alongside its two larger handsets similar to the current iPhone 6S and 6S Plus models, some tech analysists believe Apple will launch a smaller phone, which is being referred to online as the iPhone 7 Mini.

Debate is currently centred around two key questions. First, will Apple make an iPhone 7 Mini at all? And second, if it does happen, will it be a scaled-down version of the base iPhone 7 with all the function and features in a smaller package, or will it be a cheaper, entry-level iPhone similar to the iPhone 5C, which was released at the same time as the iPhone 5?
Currently, Apple sells iPhones in three sizes. The 4.7 and 5.5 inch screens available on the current 6S models are larger than the 4-inch screen offered on the 5S. But considering the most recent versions of Apple's smartphone have grown in size rather than shrunk, adding a smaller addition to the 7 range seems out of step with Apple's previous direction,Macworld says, and is "by no means a certainty."
However, Tech Insider thinks the rumours are more than likely true, saying "we've been hearing rumours of Apple reintroducing a smaller iPhone for some time now."
iDigitaltimes reports that "credible sources" say the next 4-inch iPhone will not use the A9 processor, which is expected to feature in the iPhone 7, but instead will be fitted with the A8 chip used in the current iPhone 6S.
According to Appleinsider, KGI analysist Ming-Chi Kuo, whose past iPhone predictions have been startlingly accurate, contradicts the iDigitaltimes report by suggesting that the iPhone 7 Mini will use the new A9 processor but will strip back some features of the larger phones, such as pressure-sensing 3D touch screen. He also suggests the phone will have a metal casing and could begin production in early in 2016, followed by the larger ones later in the year.
Many commentators say that the continued availability of a four-inch handset is a necessity for Apple, as current iPhone owners who never upgraded to one of the larger iPhone 6 or 6S models may wish to stick with a smaller product. The California-based company may be gambling that the lower price of its smaller phones may be a draw for those who don't want to spend over the odds for one of its larger smartphones. Forbes claims that Apple will not equip the iPhone 7 Mini with top end features, adding that the handset could be used as a tool to upsell the more expensive and larger models, claiming the Mini will be "weak by design", and that the way Apple has always made iPhones, in a pattern of "good, better, best" means the small phone, despite replacing the ageing iPhone 5 design, will lose out in key areas such as its battery capacity. "The dream of a four-inch iPhone 7 may be real, but it's unlikely to match the iPhone 7 plus" Forbes concludes.
