Google Previews Android Studio 2.0

The forthcoming revision of Google's Android IDE includes several features to make app development faster.

At its Android Developer Summit on Monday, November 23, Google previewed Android Studio 2.0, the next version of its Android integrated development environment (IDE).
Google introduced Android Studio at Google I/O 2013 as an alternative to the open source Eclipse IDE. While Eclipse is still widely used and is suitable for a variety of programming languages, Android Studio offers developers a tool specifically tuned to Android development. For example, it includes a project automation tool called Gradle as an alternative to Apache Ant. Many developers have observed that this makes the application build process more efficient.
Google's interest in developing Android Studio extends beyond delighting developers with better tools. The company also has to consider comparisons between its tools and those offered by rivals. Both Apple's Xcode andMicrosoft's Visual Basic are used by millions of developers worldwide, and are considered fairly polished tools for creating apps. Google has to ensure that Android development tools are competitive.

Android Studio 2.0 promises faster builds and deployment, and it adds a feature called Instant Run that allows developers to see the effect of code changes on a connected device or emulator immediately. Such feedback can accelerate the development process considerably.
It also adds a GPU Profiler, a tool that can help identify performance problems related to GPU bottlenecks or inefficient code.
"One of the big problems with graphics-intensive development is you'll see a scene and you get a problem," explained Stephanie Cuthbertson, Google product manager for Android, at the event. "And you're not really sure exactly what caused it. So one of the things you'll find in the GPU Profiler is you're able to record and replay the entire GPU stream frame by frame."
While GPUs traditionally have helped accelerate applications that rely on sophisticated graphics, they've become increasingly important for data-intensive applications, such as cryptography and machine learning.
In addition, Android Studio 2.0 adds support for Google Search deep linking, the process by which developers can make internal app content visible to those using Google Search. Through a feature called Intention Actions, Android Studio 2.0 will suggest placement and configuration for deep link code. It also includes static analysis, to alert developers when deep links have been misconfigured, and real-time testing, to show how Google will index and render app pages.
Android Studio 2.0 won't be released until next year, presumably in conjunction with Google I/O 2016, but it's available in Android Studio's canary release channel, so developers can provide feedback prior to the stable release.
Android Studio 1.5 just hit the stable release channel last week.

Use This Google Hangouts Trick To Avoid Messaging The Wrong Person

You'll wonder how you lived so long without it.

If you use Google Hangouts, there's a good chance that you've accidentally said something wildly inappropriate to the wrong person when you meant to message someone else.

For example, last week I was trying to tell my fiancée what I wanted for Christmas. Moments later, I realized I had sent those messages -- which were about a Batman statue -- to a colleague who I certainly do not know well enough to be demanding comic book merchandise of. It was humiliating.

The reason for the mistake: I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. But Google doesn't exactly help, either. Every Gchat message box looks the same. Because I was talking to my fiancée on my personal account and my colleague on my professional account, both message boxes were even on the same part of the screen.

There's a neat little trick to circumvent the problem, though. If you type "/bikeshed" into your Google Hangouts window and send the message, it'll change the color of your message box.

Pretty exciting, right? Since the, uh, incident last week, I've taken to changing the color of my fiancée's chat window but leaving everyone else's blank so that she always stands out in my inbox, ready to receive totally asinine demands for Batman toys.

If you want to reset your window back to the default color, just close and reopen it. Also, the trick is desktop-only -- though if you're using the mobile app, your chat windows will take up the whole screen, which probably cuts down on the confusion.

We first discovered the "/bikeshed" trick last year, but it hadn't occurred to me to use it like this until now. Check out our list of Google Hangout hacks for more.

Google's fast mobile pages coming (with ads) in early 2016

Google's fast mobile pages coming (with ads) in early 2016

Google revealed the "AMP" endeavor last month to accelerate mobile page-loading times, the slowness of which is a huge user bone of contention. It now says the fast-loading mobile pages will hit search results by early next year, and also gave more details about the project's raison d'etre: ads. The list of partners supporting the effort include its own AdSense, Outbrain and AOL, Engadget's parent company. The AMP project will cut mobile data use and wait times, but Google's not just being altruistic -- it's trying to curb ad-blockers, which heavily impact the company's ad revenue. Apple recently gave ad-blockers a big boost when it revealed it would support them for Safari on iOS 9.
Ad-blockers have become popular thanks to bloated ads that often take up as much or more data than the content. For instance, The New York Times recently reported that its own front page loaded nearly twice as quickly with the "Purify" ad-blocker installed on an iPhone, and one site's front page loaded 15 MB of ads compared to 4MB of content. Google assured website operators that traffic counts, analytics and other critical ad data won't be impacted by the change. However, it has yet to reveal exactly how much AMP will cut data usage for both content and ads. A final date for the launch will be set soon, however, at which point load times will no doubt be put through some heavy testing.
