But this does not mean the end for the Internet.
North America is forecasted to run out of IPv4 addresses this summer.
The American Registry for Internet Numbers said it has about 3.4 million available addresses left – which sounds like a lot, but at the current pace they’re being purchased the supply could run out this summer.
An IP address is like a telephone number for the internet, The Wall Street Journal explains.
There are only 4.3 billion possible addresses in IPv4, but newer protocol IPv6 is practically unlimited, as it allows up to 340 undecilion addresses-340 followed by 36 zeroes. An IP address is a short series of numbers with three dots between it, like 194.66.82.11. Back then, the engineers figured they had created enough to cover the entire Internet, but it clearly isn’t so.
Facebook is perhaps one of the most famous companies to have on-boarded most of its network to IPv6, but making that move has been somewhat of a hard sell to other companies. Every few months an analyst warns of the coming storm for enterprises as the number of web addresses on the IPv4 standard nears exhaustion. Specifically, it covers up to 340 undecillion addresses.
The next version, IPv6, provides a wider pool of IP addresses (in the trillions), but many organizations have been slow to make the switch.
There are some companies, though, who have already begun preparing for the new age. Although you probably won’t have to worry about your personal internet connections and favorite sites, there’s a chance that some of the smaller services you use will have to shell out a lot of cash to maintain business as usual. Research firm Gartner says migrating to IPv6 can cost 7 percent of the entire IT budget, making it more attractive to pick up IP addresses while they’re cheap for the time being.
