Apple Watch’s New Band to Increase Battery Life

So now that we’re certain all of us has our handy Apple Watch, we’re left no solace as the darn thing dies right before you send your boss that career-saving memo. D’oh!

No worries. Apple is releasing an Apple Watch “Reserve Strap” in November to extend by life by thirty hours. Huzzah!

WHY WE SHOULD LIKE THIS

This will free Apple Watch users from the potential woes of over-charging their watches overnight. Yes, it’s true, if you leave an electronic device plugged in for long periods of time after it’s already at full power, you will eventually reduce the battery’s total energy capacity, causing it to die younger, and younger, until finally when you press that power button it will only yawn, and blink and die again.

HOW THE BAND’S DESIGN CAME TO BE

But anyway the Reserve Strap’s been through two major redesigns since its debut in early March. Its developers, Lane Musgrave and John Arrow have worked day and night to achieve that chic look and extravagant functionality.

The final look is 25mm wide, 3-9mm thick, with a total weight of 65 grams. Initially designed to be made of rubber and metal combined into some synthetic Thermoset Elastomer Silicone band that would have been “as resistant to water as the Apple Watch,” it has since evolved into more practical forms.

WHEN YOU CAN ACQUIRE THE BAND

Set for shipment on November 3, 2015, Apple informs us that this strap could assuage users’ mulling over whether or not their Apple Watch could even make it through a full day alive. The new strap is in full compliance with Apple’s original band design guidelines for the wearable. The specs intimate that if the band and watch are both drained, the two can stay together and be charged simultaneously à la micro USB.

HOW IT WORKS

To begin charging simply press the power button once. The watch may be used during the charging process, which should take around 60-75 minutes. If the user leaves the strap on during use, the Apple Watch will drain the Strap’s power to keep itself at 100 percent, until the Strap dies. The LED will glow green, yellow or red depending on whether the charge is full, partial or nil, respectively.

Audi is sending a Quattro rover to the moon for the Google Lunar XPrize

Google is funding a $30 million new-age space race, a competition to see who can be the first to put a rover on the moon and cover 500 meters across the lunar surface, all while beaming back high-definition footage to Earth. A series of independent teams around the world are competing, and Audi just got in the game in a big way. The car manufacturer announced Thursday that is has signed on with the German team Part Time Scientists.

We visited Part Time Scientists last year to check out an earlier version of their four-wheel-drive rover as it motored across a simulated lunar environment, testing to ensure the rover's optical systems would work in the harsh conditions on the moon.

The rover shall henceforth be known as the Audi Lunar Quattro. It certainly fulfills the naming criteria, with four-wheel independent drive, and I'd say the brushed aluminum finish fits quite neatly within the Audi aesthetic, too.

Audi said in a press release Thursday it is supporting the Part Time Scientists with its knowledge in several tech fields, "from quattro all-wheel drive and lightweight construction to electric mobility and piloted driving." In addition to know-how, Audi will hopefully give the team the funding it needs to get their rover up where it belongs.

Audi and Part Time Scientists hope to launch to the moon in 2017. But, with two other GLXP teams, Astrobotic and Hakuto, planning to make their launch in 2016, Audi may be entering the race a little bit late. Regardless of who gets there first, we all win.

Reaching ‘digital natives’ through digital marketing

Today, as more and consumers interact with brands across online channels, digital marketing has gained significant traction. From wearables and big data to personalization and multichanneling — the digital economy is transforming the way consumers communicate with each other and with brands, governments and businesses.

According to the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), in 2014 Indonesia already has 88.1 million mobile Internet users, the sixth most in the world.

Furthermore, 95 percent of Internet users access social networking sites with more than 65 million Facebook accounts, 50 million Twitter accounts, 700,000 Path accounts and 10 million Line accounts in the country.

Mobile phone penetration in Indonesia reached 122 percent in early 2014 and is projected to hit 173.5 percent by 2017 (www.researchandmarkets.com, 2013). These numbers are set to explode in the coming years as more mobile and Internet users are expected to come online, led by Indonesia’s younger population.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the specialized UN agency for information and communication technologies, defines digital natives “as the population of networked youth — aged 15 to 24 years — with five or more years of online experience”. They have a generation’s worth of more access to information, especially via the Internet and mobile.

APJII data shows 49 percent of Indonesian Internet users are digital natives aged between 18 and 25 years old. This number provides brands with an excellent opportunity to create and sustain two-way conversations with their consumers. Innovations in technology have enabled new business and marketing models and companies can’t risk being left behind.

More and more consumers are now using a combination of channels to consume content. Advertising on mobile devices, linear TV moving online and new, innovative devices offer a wealth of opportunities for using completely new formats. Smartphones, tablets, smart watches, videos and TVs — there are more screens and channels than ever before and their variety is growing as we speak.

At the same time, consumer behavior is changing. Among those aged 16 to 45, the cell phone has replaced TV as the dominant media consumption format. Consumers now use technology in combination: they check their emails or read messages while the TV is on.

When we shop online, we use a number of different channels. Not only do we buy cross-channel, but we use different channels to compare products and collect feedback. So marketers need a single view of the consumer and a multichannel strategy.

Companies have to tailor their offerings more closely to their target markets’ needs and wishes. Consumers have also become extremely discerning when it comes to clicks and views. Irrelevant content, especially on the digital medium, not only puts them off, but also decreases chances of future interactions.

Brands must leverage the wealth of technology and real-time data analysis to understand now what content will grab consumers’ attention tomorrow and be prepared to deliver it.

This is where predictive analytics can be leveraged by forward-thinking companies to build better real-time customer segments, to allow them to develop and send targeted content to these groups of customers.

Fewer and fewer shoppers go to the store for advice. Instead, they read reviews on digital medium and trust what their social networks have to say about brands and products. Enter the social customer.

Before you develop passionate, loyal customers among today’s digital natives, you need a product that generates an emotional connect, content that relates to each consumer personally and does more than meet their expectations. And you need excellent customer service.

In this era of shares and likes and a vast amount of well-developed, intriguing and average content available to consumers at each click, unique, relatable, sharable content has become the holy grail of digital marketing. Well-presented content across different audio-visual mediums, with relevant information and/or extremely high entertainment value instead of empty phrases and one-way promotional pushes boost a company’s credibility and consumer trust.

Companies focused on e-commerce require tools allowing control of product content from all channels and systems in one place.

A master taxonomy to classify and categorize products, manage catalog versions and import multiple supplier catalogs will help provide the delivery of unique and rich product content to improve search engine optimization.

Companies collect vast amounts of data on how consumers purchase and use products. Their usage behavior on social media and digital platforms can reveal a lot of information about how to sell and when to sell. There are special algorithms to analyze this data and turn it into useful insights.

This is the domain of marketing automation. An example of this would be having omni-channel commerce solutions: state-of-the-art master data management for commerce and unified commerce processes that give a business a single view of its customers, products and orders and its customers a single view of the business.

This can help satisfy the demands of “always-on” consumers as well as of increasingly complex business requirements so as to maximize conversions and revenues by delivering an easy, engaging shopping and cross-channel experience — whether in-store, online, via social networks, or from mobile devices, important as most of the online connection is done via mobile.

Businesses must understand that this data alone holds the key to successful customer interactions on the digital platforms.

There is also a clear trend toward the digital showroom. One example is Nina, a virtual assistant that offers personalized customer service.

Users can ask it for their credit card balance, book a flight upgrade or check whether they can catch an earlier plane to their destination. Nina shows how virtual and real worlds are merging, opening up completely new opportunities for marketing.

What are tomorrow’s challenges for marketers? Marketers will rely even more on data. They will need the right tools and software to analyze and use that data. To reach customers, they will have to define target markets more precisely and fine-tune their interactions.

The customer journey has to become their vision. The marketing of the future will use past data to predict which products customers want and when. This is where predictive analytics and big data play a key role.

Programmatic buying and automation of digital channels are other major trends expected to become extremely relevant as digital marketing continues to evolve.

Geek Shortage Stymies Israel's Tech Boom

Israel's technology miracle is threatened by a dearth of people in the very professions that made it happen: engineers and computer scientists.

Companies such as the U.S. units of SanDisk and Broadcom say finding qualified workers is one of their biggest problems. And the shortage may worsen as fewer students sign up for the most advanced math classes, the building block for tech careers. This in an economy whose health depends on exports—about one-third of them from technology companies.

"Filling job openings is one of my top problems,'' says Shahar Bar-Or, Israel site manager for SanDisk, a data-storage chip company. "We don't leave any stone unturned.''
It's not exactly the image of Israel depicted in the 2009 book Start-Up Nation, which described how the country was able to produce more tech startups per capita than any other nation. By 2014, about 250 multinational companies had set up development centers throughout Israel, and 5,000 new companies had been born.

Now 10,000 engineers are needed on top of the current 20,000 to ensure that the sector can grow, says Yoav Chelouche, co-chairman of Israel Advanced Technology Industries, an umbrella association.  There weren't enough qualified software developers to fill all job openings in 2013 and 2014, the Central Bureau of Statistics says, and engineers were in short supply for five out of eight quarters in the same period.

To emphasize the issue, new Education Minister Naftali Bennett made his first public appearance last month at a sixth-grade math class in a Tel Aviv suburb.
"We are losing the future brains of the state of Israel,'' said Bennett, an entrepreneur whose software company sold for $145 million. "These are the future entrepreneurs, the developers of the next Iron Dome, who will never come to be.'' The antimissile system deflected hundreds of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip by shooting them down in midair.

One explanation for the shortage: Engineers who emigrated from the former Soviet Union in the 1990s are retiring. "We don't truly appreciate that immigration,'' says Adam Fisher, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners. "Without that I'm not sure we would be `Start-Up Nation'.''
Meanwhile, fewer of Israel's youth are choosing to study advanced math, and there's no increase in those studying advanced science, in part put off by the level of difficulty that could bring down overall grades. The number of high school students matriculating in advanced math dropped by a quarter from 2006, to 9,350 in 2014, according to the Trump Foundation, dedicated to improving education in Israel.

Israeli math and science students remain below average on tests given in 65 countries or economies by the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development. While the country's math ranking didn't improve in the latest 2012 testing, the overall score did rise slightly. The proportion of students enrolling in advanced math also increased somewhat in 2013 and 2014.

Shlomo Markel, Israel-based vice president of wireless chipmaker Broadcom, says the impact of the declining number of high school students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) was especially telling in Israel, where technology is expected to contribute more to exports than to any other sector.

"The difference between Israel and other countries is that in Israel, the only resource we have is human capital,'' he says.
High technology in 2014 accounted for 42 percent of the $46.8 billion in manufacturing exports last year.

Almost a year ago, when Bennett was minister of economy, a ministerial committee drew up a program to increase skilled manpower for the industry. Its plan includes recruiting more Israeli Arabs into the industry, training ultra-Orthodox men and women, luring Israeli engineers abroad to return home, and making it easier for non-Israelis to get work visas.
It must be approved by the new cabinet and could be passed later this year. Some parts are in place: About 300 academics were persuaded to return to Israel last year out of 4,300 who registered as willing to do so.

"We are now working to see how to take the ideas and put them into practice with the new government,'' says Michal Tzuk, senior deputy director general at the Ministry of Economy.

To cope with the shortage in the meantime, SanDisk moved 19 jobs abroad in 2013, 20 percent of the job openings that year, after failing to find appropriately trained staff in Israel, Bar-Or says. Now the company is slowing down existing programs for lack of employees.

The shortage hits startups as well. Bessemer's Fisher says Israeli companies run out of staff potential once they've grown to about 300 people. Wix.com, a company that provides free online tools to build websites, opened branches in Lithuania, Ukraine, and San Francisco.

"We will truly be a `Start-Up Nation' when we encourage people to come and create companies here,'' Fisher says. "I don't think we will ever be able to produce as many engineers as the country needs.''

TiVo tries again with $399 all-inclusive pricing on Roamio OTA DVR

TiVo is again offering reduced pricing on its Roamio OTA but it's uncertain how long the $399 price will last.

After a blink-and-you'll-miss-it $299 deal on the TiVo Roamio OTA recorder several weeks ago the company is trying again with a limited-time offer of $399 with lifetime service.

The Roamio OTA is a DVR that combines over-the-air antenna TV recording with a nice array of online streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant.

Compare the $399 "all-inclusive" cost against the standard Roamio OTA: $50 for the hardware plus $15-a-month for the lifetime of the product. If you plan on keeping the Roamio OTA for at least 24 months, you come out ahead with this new deal.

TiVo representatives have again been unable to confirm how long the latest deal will last and, as the previous offer existed for less than a weekend, if you're interested you best sign up straight away.

Check out TiVo's $399 Roamio OTA deal here.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Digital Marketing

Marketers are still making basic faux pas when it comes to a digital strategy.
Having started my digital career back in the bubble years of the late 1990s, I have seen, and sometimes been involved in, some pretty serious work-related digital sinnery.

As the saying goes “we live and learn”, and given the pace of digital change, we have to learn very quickly. However, here we are in 2015, and yet we still see some very avoidable mistakes:

1.Treating Digital as an Add On

Giving your digital agency the brief about a month before the campaign launches is not acceptable. Digital is not just a box that needs to be ticked, it can often be the central consumer awareness and engagement platform.
So if you are a client marketing body, give your digital agency a break and brief everyone together. You just might find yourself with a killer idea centered around digital engagement.

2. Ignoring the Next Step

You’ve spent money on building digital assets (websites, Facebook pages, Instagram accounts), and you’ve probably spent money on media to get people there. So why not take the opportunity to continue the conversation by eliciting some contact data, email addresses and phone numbers? Data can even be collected from within interactive banners.

3. Live Chat is Dead!

How many times have you been greeted on a web page by a picture of a smiley looking representative asking, “How can we help?” You open up the live chat box, type in your question and are then left hanging.

If you’re in charge of website strategy, live chat seemed like a good idea at the time, offering consumers a 24-hour written response option, but somebody has to be there. If not, remove it, quickly.

4. Launching and Leaving

Website, Facebook page, Twitter, Line, Instagram…
"We need them all” is the battle cry from the digital department.

NO YOU DON’T.

It’s understandable that marketing directors want to cover all the bases and make sure all consumer touch points are available. And it's also understandable that agencies are all too often keen to play along with this money making, scattergun approach. But the end game will be lots of unkempt, deserted online shop windows for brands.

It is much better to launch fewer assets, keep them updated, and be more skillful in leading consumers to well-tended social media accounts.

If you are going to abandon an online asset, remove it properly with a professional take down, including warning messaging, just in case there are a few consumers still lurking around.

5. Not Doing Mobile and Tablet Optimization

There can’t be any excuse for this anymore. We’re constantly being bombarded with data about the latest mobile Internet figures. So why do so many sites still hide up in the left corner of tablets or appear as postage stamps on phones?

If you’re an agency, this is a business opportunity. And if you’re a client, grab the glory and take the task in hand or suffer the consequences.

6. Measuring Everything and Doing Nothing

We’ve all been trained and seen the latest sparkly interactive reports and dashboards, but be honest, how often do we really dig into all the data being thrown at us on a daily basis?

That’s because these things need time and skill to understand, let alone interpret and glean insights from.

So to gain real perspective and action from digital measurement, be prepared to invest in people and time to make measurement actionable.

7. Posting Pictures From Google: Fail

We’re so used to searching for information, images, videos, and general content for our personal consumption that when it comes to the web and work, we forget about that little thing called the law.

It’s common practice in Southeast Asia to post photos on a company’s Facebook page, for example, without asking prior permission from the owner.

This is a grey area, but even if you credit the source of a photo when using it, you’re still on shaky legal ground and may find yourself at the mercy of an IP lawyer.

To save yourself from worry, pay for pictures or seek written permission.

I’ve only listed seven pretty common sins here, there are, of course, so many more. It would be interesting to hear what other people regularly encounter. Leave your comments below.

America’s supply of IP addresses is about to run out

But this does not mean the end for the Internet.

North America is forecasted to run out of IPv4 addresses this summer.

The American Registry for Internet Numbers said it has about 3.4 million available addresses left – which sounds like a lot, but at the current pace they’re being purchased the supply could run out this summer.

An IP address is like a telephone number for the internet, The Wall Street Journal explains.

There are only 4.3 billion possible addresses in IPv4, but newer protocol IPv6 is practically unlimited, as it allows up to 340 undecilion addresses-340 followed by 36 zeroes. An IP address is a short series of numbers with three dots between it, like 194.66.82.11. Back then, the engineers figured they had created enough to cover the entire Internet, but it clearly isn’t so.

Facebook is perhaps one of the most famous companies to have on-boarded most of its network to IPv6, but making that move has been somewhat of a hard sell to other companies. Every few months an analyst warns of the coming storm for enterprises as the number of web addresses on the IPv4 standard nears exhaustion. Specifically, it covers up to 340 undecillion addresses.

The next version, IPv6, provides a wider pool of IP addresses (in the trillions), but many organizations have been slow to make the switch.

There are some companies, though, who have already begun preparing for the new age. Although you probably won’t have to worry about your personal internet connections and favorite sites, there’s a chance that some of the smaller services you use will have to shell out a lot of cash to maintain business as usual. Research firm Gartner says migrating to IPv6 can cost 7 percent of the entire IT budget, making it more attractive to pick up IP addresses while they’re cheap for the time being.

Intel builds regional digital marketing hub

Intel will be launching its first digital hub, based in Singapore and functioning for the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) region.

The centre will be fully operational by the end of May, said Jamshed Wadia, head of digital marketing and media, Asia Pacific and Japan, Intel.

“The APJ Digital Hub will operate in real time, combining insights and creativity, integrating the power of paid, earned and owned media in order to amplify conversations and inspire search around the Intel brand and its products, giving new impact and efficiencies to our marketing organisation,” said Wadia, who is leading the move for Intel.

The hub is aimed at giving the firm the capacity to measure all its digital activations; optimise content and media for reach; drive higher engagement and cost efficiency, all in real time. This will also allow the company to produce content at a higher capacity. The digital hub will pull in conversational insights and behavioral measures that will be combined with Intel’s research data to bring in valuable longer term insights for product marketing and strategy, he said.

The hub will function in these four areas: overall web monitoring; predictive conversational analysis; owned metrics and advocacy tracking.

Overall web monitoring: The hub will serve to measuring Intel’s share of voice, popular content themes and sentiment analysis across Intel as brand and business segments like PCs, 2in1, smartphones, tablets and new businesses like IOT and wearables. This will also include measuring Intel led campaigns, industry events and Intel owned events.

Predictive conversational analysis: “Web monitoring in generl gives us real time info on what has happened and predictive web monitoring is an additional layer of analysis that is based on historical trends and algorithms that can provide predictive emerging conversations in the next 48 to 72 hours. This will give Intel a window of opportunity to figure out a conversation or content strategy around that theme,” said Wadia.

Owned metrics: This will also offer real time analysis on the impact of its owned web and social assets. The impact will be measured in terms of reach, engagement, leads generated, cost of media, content effectiveness and community strength.

Advocacy tracking: The center can identify in real time online influencers that are influencing the conversations that matter to allow Intel to engage with them via a formal engagement program that builds a long term relationships, said Wadia.
With Intel taking digital capabilities into its own hands, will this affect its current agency partnerships?

Increasingly, companies building their own digital capabilities in-house has been on the rise. A recent study suggested that in-housing of digital efforts is a major challenge to agencies with 27% of companies claiming to work with no agencies, more than double the figure from 2014. Clients that continue to work with agencies are also cutting back on their rosters – just 12% of brands had four or more digital agencies this year, down from 21% in 2014, said the study. (Read also: Should agencies worry when clients build in-house digital capabilities?)

Is this the case for Intel? Wadia said the answer is no. Intel currently works with agencies for three areas of marketing: We are Social works on its content; Zeno on its community management and Omnicom’s Resolution Media for media buying. The latter relationship runs globally and regionally. This only means the agencies will have more data to help their strategies for Intel, said Wadia.

The company also declined to divulge its investment on the project.

Jayant Murthy, director brand strategy, Integrated and Partner Marketing at Intel said that the company has been building its followers on social across Asia for the past two years, with numbers now reaching 8.5 million followers on social across all its properties, and this move was meant to leverage that and properly drive conversations at scale.

6 Things That Every Entrepreneur Must Know about Digital Marketing

The world of digital marketing changes fast — really fast. One day, your non-mobile site is just fine. The next day, wham!, you’re flat on your back with flatlined traffic and sinking conversion rates.

Your job as a business owner and entrepreneur is to move revenue up and to the right, to keep the business afloat, to run it all, and to look good doing it.

You can’t be expected to know everything there is to know about the field of digital marketing. But, on the other hand, you have to know a few things. Below are six of the most important things that you should know about the state of  digital marketing right now.

1. It’s more than PPC ads.

A few years ago, PPC was the end-all digital marketing solution. Today, however, PPC has less of an impact.

I watch businesses pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into the PPC hole, thinking it’s the only digital option. Well, it’s not. There are plenty more methods that are even more effective.

Don’t necessarily cancel your AdWords account right away. You can still bid on a few select keywords, but it’s time to wake up to the wide, wide world of all that digital marketing has to offer.

2.  It costs money.

Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina joins Republican presidential fray

Fiorina proclaims on her "Carly for President" website that her time at Hewlett-Packard will prepare her well for the White House.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is running for president, and judging by her own website and her brief history in politics, her time at the computer maker will play a major role in that bid.

Fiorina announced the news on her Twitter account and on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday. In a video posted to her Twitter account, she said that she's seeking the Republican nomination for president because she believes the US "is at a pivotal point."

She is notable in part for being the first (and perhaps only) former technology executive to enter the 2016 race for the White House. She joins a growing number of Republican candidates, including Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio, all vying first for the party's nomination and eventually to compete against the Democratic nominee, widely expected at this early date to be former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

On her "Carly for President" website, Fiorina takes a dig at Clinton, saying "Our founders never intended us to have a professional political class. ... We know that the only way to reimagine our government is to reimagine who is leading it."

In 2010, Fiorina, who has never held elective office, ran for a US Senate seat in California against incumbent Barbara Boxer. After a bitter fight that saw Fiorina's tenure at HP heavily criticized by Boxer, the former CEO won just 42 percent of the vote.

Indeed, HP could loom large for Fiorina during this campaign. During her tenure as chief executive between 1999 and 2005, she made the controversial decision in 2001 to merge with PC maker Compaq to create the world's largest PC manufacturer. Not long after the deal was announced, Walter Hewlett, the son of co-founder William Hewlett, launched a proxy fight to unseat Fiorina. He said that the Compaq merger was a poor attempt at making a strategic decision and would ultimately hurt the company. Though his proxy fight failed and Fiorina stayed in her role, Hewlett's attempts to remove her created a rift between her and the board that culminated in a messy ouster in 2005.

In her 2006 book "Tough Choices," Fiorina argued that HP's board was dysfunctional.

During her campaign against Boxer, the skeletons resurfaced as the California senator took Fiorina to task, claiming she failed to properly lead the company. Boxer also pointed to claims that Fiorina was difficult to work with and that HP shares were up following her dismissal, indicating that her work left much to be desired.

On her website, the 60-year-old Fiorina has an entire section dedicated to her HP tenure, and says that under her leadership, "great things happened at HP." She lists several accomplishments, including doubling the company's revenues, quadrupling its cash flow, and growing it from the 28th largest company in the US to the 11th.

"Carly didn't always make the most popular decisions at HP -- but, time and time again, they would prove to be the right ones," her site reads. "But even though her record as CEO speaks for itself, Carly faced headwinds from people who did not want to see HP change. They wanted to double-down on a flawed agenda that simply wasn't sustainable against the new challenges of the 21st century.

"Our nation faces this very same problem today -- where career politicians protect the current system that personally benefits them, but no longer works for the American people," the site continues.

Meanwhile, a site Fiorina's team apparently neglected to scoop up, CarlyFiorina.org, is being used to highlight the number of layoffs at HP during her tenure.

Even before her announcement Monday, Fiorina had already started to boost her presence in New Hampshire and Iowa, states that are early factors in the runup to the nomination. It's unknown how much funding Fiorina has raised so far in a contest that could require spending hundreds of millions of dollars. It's unknown what sort of support she'll find among potential Silicon Valley donors.

Fiorina plans to hold a live stream to answer questions from the public on Twitter at 1 p.m. PT on Monday.

SEO Reports Putting The C-Suite To Sleep? Bring Out The Graphs

The Jawbone Up24  was one of the most popular activity trackers available. The company has since replaced the band with the Up2. Unlike the new and more expensive Up3, which tracks heart rate, the Up2 has the same features as the older model, but is more affordable.

It's $100 in the US (converted to £65 and AU$125), which is $30 cheaper than the competing Fitbit Charge and less expensive than the Up24 used to cost. Out of all Jawbone's new fitness bands, it's the one we'd recommend. And yet still, Jawbone took two steps forward and one step back with the Up2. It improves upon earlier models, but it still isn't perfect.

What can it do?

The Up2 is capable of measuring the steps you take each day, your distance traveled and calories burned. There's sleep tracking onboard, too. A double tap on the top of the band will display an activity light to indicate which mode the tracker is in. While this light is active, a long press will enable sleep mode. I had some trouble with this gesture, and found it to be unresponsive on multiple occasions; I had to tap the band several times to get it to work. You can train the Up2 to automatically recover sleep data you forgot to track by adding the range of hours you slept.

Still, it's a shame that Jawbone hasn't released a band with worry-free automatic sleep tracking, a feature found in recent trackers from Misfit, Fitbit and Garmin. The Up2 doesn't have a display, but it does have a vibrating silent alarm, one of my favorite features on an activity tracker. You can set an alarm that will gently vibrate on your wrist to wake you. There's even a "Smart Alarm" feature that will attempt to wake you when you're in a state of light sleep.

I used the silent alarm feature every night as I tested the Up2. I find it a lot more peaceful to wake up to, rather than the blaring sounds coming from my smartphone. I chose not to use the Smart Alarm on weekdays, only because I was scared it might make me miss work.

Design

The Up2 is more discreet than Jawbone's previous trackers. The Jawbone Up and Up24 were sometimes viewed more as fashion accessories rather than activity trackers, but this isn't the case for the new Up, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. While the new band strips the textured design of previous models, it's 45 percent slimmer and adds a clasp for improved wrist security. It's comfortable, lightweight and you barely feel it on your wrist, which is the way an activity tracker should feel.

Despite these improvements, though, the Up2 still fell off on more than one occasion. I had to be extra careful removing my coat or a long-sleeved shirt, or if I were to bump into the wall or cabinet. Oddly enough, the Up2 is incredibly difficult to put on, but once it's on, there is little reason to remove it. The Up2 is water-resistant and can be worn out in the rain, while doing the dishes and even showering. It cannot be worn while swimming, however.

None of Jawbone's activity trackers include a display, which may be a turn off for quite a few people. The band is essentially a data collector that syncs with your Android or iOS device. I found myself frequently glancing at my wrist hoping to see the time, which was never there. It was also annoying to have to open the Jawbone app every time I wanted to check my activity progress.

Jawbone is no stranger to build-quality problems. I know quite a few people who are on their third or fourth band. Jawbone's superior customer service is usually great about replacing broken bands, even in cases where the warranty has already expired. But, my concern is with the new clasp on the Up2 (the Up3 has it, too). It doesn't feel very secure, and while I've experienced no wear and tear over the past week, it's something to keep an eye on.

One of my colleagues pointed out that the new design of the Up2 doesn't allow it to be worn around the ankle, which he would do with the Up24 when cycling. I never thought of using it around my ankle, but it's an interesting concern for bikers who do.

Software

Perhaps the best thing about Jawbone's Up activity trackers is the software. The Jawbone Up mobile app (available for Android and iOS) is colorful, powerful and one of my favorites. The app provides you with a lot of the tools you need to live a healthier lifestyle. Aside from activity tracking, there's food, drink and mood tracking, and you can create teams to compete with others. The software can also connect with a huge selection of third-party apps, such as MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper, Strava, IFTTT, Nest and more. (Just make sure you're using the purple app for syncing since, weirdly, Jawbone has two different apps and they pair with different sets of devices.)

The first thing I did after I created a Jawbone account was join a team with my CNET colleague Scott Stein. As he tested the Up3 and myself the Up2, I was able to keep tabs on his daily activity progress. A leaderboard that displays our total step count over the past seven days kept me motivated. Unlike with the Fitbit app, however, there was no way for me to challenge Stein to daily competitions.

Bitcoin VIP: The Internet Had a Shady Start, Too

Without dealings in the "grey areas" of the global economy, bitcoin might not have grown to be worth the $3 billion it is today, according to Gavin Andresen, the closest thing the digital currency has to a CEO.

Andresen, a self-confessed "all-around geek", is chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, a non-profit group he helped set up three years ago to support and promote the digital currency.

The original "cryptocurrency", bitcoin is increasingly accepted as payment for goods and services over the Internet. But detractors are concerned about how bitcoin makes it easier for users to make purchases anonymously.

Andresen acknowledged it has been used in the United States for online gambling, which was effectively outlawed there until December 2011, with banks barred from transmitting bets.

It also played an important role in the function of the Silk Road online marketplace, which sold drugs and other illegal or contraband goods until it was closed in 2013.

"Without those uses maybe it would have taken longer (for bitcoin to get to where it is)," he told Reuters over coffee at a conference organized by the Bitcoin Foundation in London, where a push into financial technology is making the city a hub for the virtual currency..

In its early days, "the Internet was for porn. That was the story," said Andresen, who graduated from Princeton with a degree in computer science in 1988 and took a job in a 3D graphics company in California's Silicon Valley.

"If you look at a lot of technologies, they start in the shadows – in the grey areas, the black areas – and then eventually they become mainstream. I think bitcoin has seen the same evolution."

Andresen took over the bitcoin empire in 2011 from Satoshi Nakamoto, an elusive figure credited with founding bitcoin in 2009. Some "bitcoiners" have suggested Andresen and "Satoshi", as he is widely known, are in fact the same person, and some have said Satoshi may in fact be a team of developers.

Andresen denies he is Satoshi, and says he has never met him.

"There are some questions I'm sick of giving answers to. Don't ask me if I'm Satoshi," Andresen said at the conference, which took place on the site of the old Royal Mint where Britain's coinage was produced for 200 years.

Andresen said he was chosen via an email in which Satoshi said he was moving on and leaving Bitcoin "in the good hands of Gavin and everyone". He then changed the contact on the Bitcoin website from his email address to Andresen's.

Bitcoin has come a long way since 2010, when it was first used to make a payment -- 10,000 bitcoins for pizza. One bitcoin is currently worth around $220.

Leading companies, including International Business Machines and governments, are showing growing interest in the technology that underlies it.

The currency is not backed by any government or central bank and floats freely, fluctuating according to user demand. Like many bitcoiners, Andresen sees the lack of centralised oversight liberating users of the digital currency.

"My vision is really to give people more control over their money in the financial world," he said.

One advantage of bitcoin often cited is the ability to send money instantaneously and cheaply to other users anywhere in the world. All a user needs is an Internet connection, whether or not they have a bank account, credit card or even an address.

Andresen's ambition is for bitcoin to reach a billion people, with the developing world -- where many have smartphones but not bank accounts -- seen as ripe for greater use.

"If the goal is just the 10,000 richest people in the world using bitcoin, frankly I'm not interested."

Bitcoin's value has been highly volatile, having peaked at over $1,200 in late 2013 before crashing in the wake of a $500 million hacking attack on Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox in early 2014.

Such an attack could happen again, Andresen says, and warns against investing too much in bitcoin for now.

"I hate hearing people who say they invested their life savings in bitcoin. Don't do that. And I have not done that personally," he said. "Bitcoin is an experiment."

So how many bitcoins does bitcoin's chief architect have? Andresen preferred not to give that away.

"Fewer than many people think," he said.
