TiVo tries again with $399 all-inclusive pricing on Roamio OTA DVR

TiVo is again offering reduced pricing on its Roamio OTA but it's uncertain how long the $399 price will last.

After a blink-and-you'll-miss-it $299 deal on the TiVo Roamio OTA recorder several weeks ago the company is trying again with a limited-time offer of $399 with lifetime service.

The Roamio OTA is a DVR that combines over-the-air antenna TV recording with a nice array of online streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant.

Compare the $399 "all-inclusive" cost against the standard Roamio OTA: $50 for the hardware plus $15-a-month for the lifetime of the product. If you plan on keeping the Roamio OTA for at least 24 months, you come out ahead with this new deal.

TiVo representatives have again been unable to confirm how long the latest deal will last and, as the previous offer existed for less than a weekend, if you're interested you best sign up straight away.

Check out TiVo's $399 Roamio OTA deal here.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Digital Marketing

Marketers are still making basic faux pas when it comes to a digital strategy.
Having started my digital career back in the bubble years of the late 1990s, I have seen, and sometimes been involved in, some pretty serious work-related digital sinnery.

As the saying goes “we live and learn”, and given the pace of digital change, we have to learn very quickly. However, here we are in 2015, and yet we still see some very avoidable mistakes:

1.Treating Digital as an Add On

Giving your digital agency the brief about a month before the campaign launches is not acceptable. Digital is not just a box that needs to be ticked, it can often be the central consumer awareness and engagement platform.
So if you are a client marketing body, give your digital agency a break and brief everyone together. You just might find yourself with a killer idea centered around digital engagement.

2. Ignoring the Next Step

You’ve spent money on building digital assets (websites, Facebook pages, Instagram accounts), and you’ve probably spent money on media to get people there. So why not take the opportunity to continue the conversation by eliciting some contact data, email addresses and phone numbers? Data can even be collected from within interactive banners.

3. Live Chat is Dead!

How many times have you been greeted on a web page by a picture of a smiley looking representative asking, “How can we help?” You open up the live chat box, type in your question and are then left hanging.

If you’re in charge of website strategy, live chat seemed like a good idea at the time, offering consumers a 24-hour written response option, but somebody has to be there. If not, remove it, quickly.

4. Launching and Leaving

Website, Facebook page, Twitter, Line, Instagram…
"We need them all” is the battle cry from the digital department.

NO YOU DON’T.

It’s understandable that marketing directors want to cover all the bases and make sure all consumer touch points are available. And it's also understandable that agencies are all too often keen to play along with this money making, scattergun approach. But the end game will be lots of unkempt, deserted online shop windows for brands.

It is much better to launch fewer assets, keep them updated, and be more skillful in leading consumers to well-tended social media accounts.

If you are going to abandon an online asset, remove it properly with a professional take down, including warning messaging, just in case there are a few consumers still lurking around.

5. Not Doing Mobile and Tablet Optimization

There can’t be any excuse for this anymore. We’re constantly being bombarded with data about the latest mobile Internet figures. So why do so many sites still hide up in the left corner of tablets or appear as postage stamps on phones?

If you’re an agency, this is a business opportunity. And if you’re a client, grab the glory and take the task in hand or suffer the consequences.

6. Measuring Everything and Doing Nothing

We’ve all been trained and seen the latest sparkly interactive reports and dashboards, but be honest, how often do we really dig into all the data being thrown at us on a daily basis?

That’s because these things need time and skill to understand, let alone interpret and glean insights from.

So to gain real perspective and action from digital measurement, be prepared to invest in people and time to make measurement actionable.

7. Posting Pictures From Google: Fail

We’re so used to searching for information, images, videos, and general content for our personal consumption that when it comes to the web and work, we forget about that little thing called the law.

It’s common practice in Southeast Asia to post photos on a company’s Facebook page, for example, without asking prior permission from the owner.

This is a grey area, but even if you credit the source of a photo when using it, you’re still on shaky legal ground and may find yourself at the mercy of an IP lawyer.

To save yourself from worry, pay for pictures or seek written permission.

I’ve only listed seven pretty common sins here, there are, of course, so many more. It would be interesting to hear what other people regularly encounter. Leave your comments below.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Apple Inc. Confirm Partnership Agreement For Mobile Payments

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) have agreed on a partnership to introduce a payments system into China, possibly Apple Pay. The news emerged after Alibaba’s Chairman, Jack Ma, gave a news conference in South Korea.

Mr. Ma has been quoted as saying the Chinese e-commerce giant is in the initial stages of cooperation and negotiation with the Cupertino-based tech giant, to open a payments system in China. He hopes both companies could ink deals in other areas as well.

Just a week ago, both companies were in talks to introduce a mobile payment system in China. Apple CEO Tim Cook, was excited about the partnership; in an interview with China’s Xinhua news agency, he said: “We very much want to get Apple Pay in China. I’m very bullish on Apple Pay in China.”

Apple is in discussion with a multitude of Chinese banks in an attempt to bring Apple Pay to China. Apple Pay was first launched in the US in September 2014, at the same time Alibaba debuted on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Apple Pay allows iPhone users to make payments by holding their iPhones near contactless readers.

China is Apple’s second biggest market but it’s expected to be the company’s biggest revenue engine in a couple of years, relegating the US to second position. The iPhones garner higher sales from China compared to the US market; therefore, Apple Pay’s entry into China is of paramount importance to Apple.

This robot can crack your combination lock in less than 30 seconds

Weeks after introducing a manual method that narrows the number of potential combinations to a specific Master Lock down to just eight, intrepid hacker and engineer Samy Kamkar has developed an open source, 3D-printed robot that applies the technique automatically. Calling his gadget the "Combo Breaker," Kamkar claims it can crack a common combination lock in less than 30 seconds.

Kamkar's device uses a technique that feels for telltale points of resistance along a combination lock's dial. With the right algorithm, one can use these resistance points to figure out the first and third digits of a three-digit combination lock, along with eight possibilities for the second digit. From there, it's just a matter of trying each one out. The Arduino-based Combo Breaker is motorized to do exactly that.

On his blog, Kamkar goes into full detail on how the technique works, along with how he designed and constructed the device. Everything is open source, with 3D-printable models ready for download, so there isn't much stopping someone from putting together a Combo Breaker of their own. Of course, there's even less stopping someone from picking up a decent set of bolt cutters.

Kamkar's hacking experience dates back several years, with a long, detailed list of projects that include hacks and bypasses for everything from email clients to wireless doorbells. In 2011, Kamkar analyzed how Google stores and secures location data from Android devices.

Bypassing a cheap combination lock might seem trivial in comparison. Still, it'll definitely have me thinking twice about using one to secure anything more important than a spare set of clothes at the gym.

CHIP the world's cheapest computer: $9, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage, WiFi

New Delhi: Who would have thought owning a computer could get this cheap! Listed on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter, CHIP is a fully functional computer, complete with built-in WiFi, all for just $9.

Dubbed CHIP, this computer is essentially a dev board but has specifications at par with standard traditional computers: 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage and Bluetooth to connect cordless peripherals.

A report on Geek notes that the dev board-looking CHIP can run a full Linux desktop and do all what a normal computer does; you can hook up power, run a video cable to a display, surf with Chromium, chat in Pidgin, or watch videos in VLC using the 2.3 x 1.5 inches tiny computer.

What makes CHIP this cheap is its core that has been pulled out of an inexpensive Chinese tablet. CHIP uses an Allwinner SoC, which is powerful yet cheap and is installed in numerous bargain-priced devices on sites like Aliexpress or Geekbuying.

The cheap tag is only for the basic configuration, if you want a VGA or HDMI port, you'll need to spend $10 and $15 extra respectively. It can also be turned into a handheld PC that looks like a maker's BlackBerry for $40 more.

While CHIP makes even the $35 Raspberry Pi 2 seem overpriced, the cheapest dev board isn't seeing the light of the day anytime before May, 2016 when it begins shipping.

Why digital marketers must drive the customer journey

Handing off customers, from marketing to sales to customer service, seems a bit jolting in today's digital world. These days, customers own the online social relationship, and they don't want to be passed around like a hot potato. They demand one group guide them through the customer journey.

More often than not, this group is the digital marketing team.

Death of a salesman

Already there are signs that marketers are pushing out salespeople. Forrester predicts one million B2B sales jobs will disappear in the coming years, as customers research and purchase goods online. At DEMO Traction in San Francisco last week, many startup tech companies said they don't even employ salespeople.

On the post-sale side, a fight has broken out on social media between marketers and customer service pros over control of the customer relationship. Customers don't want to pick up a phone and call customer support anymore. They want answers online, where marketers hold sway yet aren't good at providing customer service.

"Initially seen as an outbound channel for marketing, social media soon also saw consumers seeking customer service, something marketing teams were ill-prepared to handle," writes Forrester analyst Ian Jacobs in a brief entitled Take Social Customer Service Beyond Your Own Walled Garden.

Digital marketers need to see clearly

As marketers expand their influence along the customer journey, they need to know what this really looks like. The holy grail at the end of customer journey is a customer advocate who wields a social networking bullhorn. How to get there? Bluenose, a customer lifecycle management vendor, has put together an infographic that at least gives marketers a big picture.

What is HDMI 2.0a?

HDMI 2.0a is the latest version of the beloved/despised spec that regulates those ubiquitous cables, inputs and outputs that connect pretty much everything in your home entertainment center. It's a minor update, but a potentially important one for this year and beyond.

The most important part up front: Just like before, this is not a cable change. Your current HDMI cables should work fine.

If you haven't read about HDMI 2.0, definitely check that out first. Some big changes were made from the previous version (1.4).

Each of these changes has to do with the chips inside the TVs and source devices like Blu-ray players, not the cables themselves. The cable is just a dumb pipe. It doesn't care if the data flowing through it is 4K video, high-def video, standard-def video, or anything in between: HDR, 2160p, or 720p is all just a variation on a theme -- lots of ones and zeroes.

It's also possible you may never see HDMI 2.0a even written anywhere on TV specification sheets. A similar thing happened with HDMI 2.0. We'll see.

What changed?

The change has to do exclusively with High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. Not to be confused with HDR for cameras, HDR for TVs promises better realism thanks to brighter whites and other improvements, and requires compatible TVs, source devices and specialized content.

We'll start with the summary of the actual language from the HDMI Forum, which oversees the specification. Here's the relevant part of its April 8 press release on HDMI 2.0a:

The specification has been updated to enable transmission of HDR formats, which provide enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. The HDR-related updates include references to CEA-861.3, CEA's recently published update of HDR Static Metadata Extensions. - HDMI Forum, Inc.

In essence, the change is just specifications on how to transmit HDR metadata. That's information layered on top of the video image that tells the HDR-compatible display how to best take advantage of the greater color and contrast range in the underlying video image. So, for instance, a theoretical future 4K Blu-ray player can take that shadowy scene in a dark village and "tell" the display exactly how to render it in its HDR-enhanced glory.

Notably, the spec doesn't regulate streaming connections directly from the Internet to a TV -- for example, HDR from Amazon or Netflix (coming later this year) -- just those from HDMI sources. That's because streaming connections skip HDMI entirely, allowing direct communication between the Internet and the TV's decoder, which typically utilize HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) or VP9 compression for 4K video.

What does it mean to you?

The main thing to know is that HDMI 2.0a is only relevant to new, high-end 2015 TVs that can accept and display HDR content.

They include models like Samsung's SUHD line, Vizio's Reference series, Panasonic's CX850 and two of Sony's most-expensive XBR models. Since other TVs -- including most of the 4K TVs and non-4K announced in 2015 -- don't handle HDR, they don't need HDMI 2.0a and have no use for HDR signals, via HDMI or otherwise.

CNET contacted those four manufacturers to determine whether their sets would be compatible with HDMI 2.0a. Sony told us the XBR-75X940C and XBR-65X930C (its only 2015 HDR TVs) will be compatible, but none of the other makers have yet provided a definitive answer. We'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they will be compatible too, and we'll update this article when we hear something one way or the other.

Bottom line

HDMI 2.0a is not a big change, and it likely won't affect you right now, but like we've been doing for years, we wanted to hedge against the inevitable claims of cable purveyors. Next time someone says "HDMI 2.0a compatible cables! Only $999.99 per meter!," tell them you'll save some money and get the cheap ones instead.

Applying The Principles Of The 2016 Election To Digital Marketing Campaigns

The 2016 presidential campaign season officially kicked off last week when news broke that Hillary Clinton and Marco Rubio were putting in their bids for America’s vote. A spirit of change is in the air — the candidates have already begun to address key issues and to sell their strategies for improvements to the economy, violence, human rights, international relations, education, energy sources, and so on.

In the same spirit, it’s time digital marketers get our heads out of the sand and address issues that we’ve been hiding behind for the past few decades. These issues directly impact a $600 billion industry, and it’s time we step up to the plate and campaign for change. Let’s take a look at some of these issues and how we can best address them.

The Elephant In The Room: Attribution (Or Lack Thereof)

For over two decades, we’ve been using the last-click model to validate and measure the entire efficacy of our industry. It’s about time we face reality and understand the blatant flaws of this strategy.

Let’s look at sandwich boards as an example — you know, those boards that sit outside storefronts and shops exhibiting the special or sale of the day? A brand can spend millions of dollars on marketing, TV spots, digital, mobile, and direct mail elements. But the last-click model is like giving all the credit of driving new customers to your store to just the sandwich boards.

The law of advertising economics says that money follows where there are eyeballs. With mobile usage now surpassing desktop, the ecosystem is making us adopt a new performance model.

We need a new attribution model, and with that, more analytic-focused professionals where marketing budgets are controlled.

Bring It Back To People

It’s time that we all go back to one of the basics of marketing: It’s about understanding consumers’ intent, not about the ad impressions.

Brands need to understand how their users are engaging with the brand across channels and how their behaviors are affecting sales. If you’re an auto brand, your customers will act very differently from customers looking for a new restaurant — from how quickly they’ll react to the brand message, to what channels they’re using, to what actions they’ll take once they engage with the brand.

Once you understand your users and their behaviors, you can then set an appropriate target for your omni-channel strategy.

Deliver Personalized Messages

Everyone loves Super Bowl commercials. Why? Because marketers spend loads of money and time to deliver the perfect and innovative brand message to the highest viewed slots on TV. When time (and sometimes money) is spent on delivering a message to an audience, the effects are huge.

We need to adopt the same principle and discipline for better creative delivery in digital and mobile. Marketers need to get better at personalization and innovation in their creative design.

I cringe anytime I see a static 320×50 ad on mobile, but get giddy when I see a well-done native mobile ad or Mraid (where I can swipe and shake features of the ad). This type of engagement with consumers will help marketers build a personal and emotional connection with the end user, and most likely lead to a bigger sales margin.

Use Data, Intelligence

Mobile and programmatic have been referred to as the “wild, wild West,” but more solutions are in place than ever before.

Even now, marketers aren’t taking full advantage of the data available to them. There’s now intelligible data that can help us determine a bot versus human, identify quality traffic sources, understand what people are searching for in real-time, locate customers based on GPS signals, and tell you where your ad was viewed.

We need to get comfortable with multiple sources of data and determine how to bring them together to make the best of use of it. In the end, using data for intelligence will lead to greater trust, transparency and performance.

The same principles behind a great presidential campaign stand true for great digital campaigns: To gain people’s votes (or interactions in our world), you must be able to deliver the right message to the end user before you’re too far down the campaign trail.

Comcast to ditch $45.2B takeover of Time Warner Cable, report says

After meeting with regulators, Comcast looks to be giving up on its plan to acquire the cable giant, according to Bloomberg.

Comcast may be giving up on its $45.2 billion bid to buy fellow cable provider Time Warner Cable after meetings with regulators indicated they may oppose the deal, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The news service said that the announcement could come as early as Friday.

Regulators have been concerned that the joining of the two largest cable operators in the US, creating a pay television behemoth with approximately 30 million subscribers, would influence the distribution of video content and could hinder competition from Internet companies like Netflix that stream video over broadband networks.

Comcast declined to comment on the report.

The news comes a day after Comcast officials met with regulators at the Department of Justice to begin the process of discussing potential concessions in the deal. On Wednesday, Federal Communications Commission staff also met with the commissioners to brief them on their recommendation for the merger.

The Justice Department and the FCC work closely in reviewing mergers in the communications sector. The DOJ looks at whether mergers violate antitrust laws or concerns, while the FCC considers whether mergers would be in the public interest.

Rumors have circulated in the last few weeks that the Justice Department staff had concerns about the deal and were considering suing Comcast to stop the merger. And on Wednesday, FCC staff expressed their own concerns about the deal and suggested commissioners consider sending it for a review by an administrative law judge, a source familiar with the situation confirmed.

Such a recommendation by the FCC staff suggests that those reviewing the merger did not feel the deal would be in the public interest, even with conditions imposed by the agency, which would trigger the judge's review.

Even though Comcast and Time Warner Cable would still have an opportunity to argue why they believe the merger is in the public interest, it's likely they felt too much opposition to the deal. Still, the recommendation from the FCC staff is not an official decision by the commission. Staffers analyze transactions, but it is ultimately up to the five FCC commissioners to vote on whether to approve a deal.

Comcast has argued previously that its deal with Time Warner Cable is in the public interest. And it has denied anything anticompetitive about the deal since Time Warner Cable and Comcast do not compete directly for broadband or television customers in any markets.

Microsoft results show company's shift, but is it enough?

SAN FRANCISCO

Microsoft is changing its business. The question has been whether it's changing fast enough.

The tech giant showed some progress Thursday, reporting better-than-expected quarterly earnings and more growth in its relatively new cloud computing segment. CEO Satya Nadella has been investing in new services and redesigning Microsoft's most popular programs for smartphones and other mobile gadgets.

But a continuing slump in the PC industry has caused Microsoft's stock to tumble in recent months, marking the end of a honeymoon period in which shares rose steadily after Nadella took the reins in February 2014. Microsoft's latest report shows another decline in profit and in revenue from the company's flagship Windows software for personal computers.

Wall Street analysts say 2015 is the year when Nadella needs to show his strategy is making a difference.

"He needs to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk," said FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives, who's been a fan of Nadella's moves to overhaul a company best known for its personal computer software.

Microsoft's financial results underscore the importance of those efforts. Revenue from cloud computing has grown rapidly, as more businesses are paying to use software housed in Microsoft's data centers. The Redmond, Washington-based company says it's on track to log more than $6 billion in cloud sales this year.

But the numbers show Microsoft still relies heavily on selling traditional software, which contributed the largest part of its $21.73 billion in sales for the quarter. The company saw a 26 percent drop in Windows licensing revenue for consumer PCs and a 19 percent drop in licensing for business PCs. And many analysts believe that trend will continue.

Worldwide demand for PCs are expected to fall in 2015, for the fourth consecutive year, according to International Data Corp. Microsoft blamed weak demand, along with the effects of a strong dollar overseas, when it issued a forecast in January for lower revenue than analysts had expected. That sent Microsoft's stock tumbling more than 10 percent in one day.

After peaking at $50.05 last November, Microsoft Corp. shares have traded below $43 recently. The stock closed Thursday at $43.34 and rose more than 3 percent in late trading after the earnings report.

Microsoft is hoping for a boost later this year, when it releases a redesigned version of Windows with new features for PCs and mobile devices. And Nadella has taken other steps to get Microsoft's software into the hands of consumers who prefer smartphones and tablets.

That includes offering Windows at steep discounts for manufacturers to use in lower-priced tablets and laptops. This may hurt revenue near term, but Bernstein Research analyst Mark Moerdler says it should pay off eventually by getting more people to use Microsoft products like the Bing search engine and Office 365 programs for documents, spreadsheets and mail.

Similarly, Microsoft has released Office apps for Apple and Android smartphones, which are far more popular today than Windows-based phones. While the apps are free for consumers, Microsoft hopes to gain revenue by charging for extra services and versions for business users.

That revenue may come, said Forrester analyst Ted Schadler. But he cautioned, "this kind of structural transition takes a long time."

Product Reviews for Links? Be Careful!

It’s getting harder and harder to get links these days. Google is getting really good at determining which links to a website are naturally earned and which ones are either paid endorsements or links that were obtained by offering some kind of incentive. In some cases Google will simply ignore self-made or purchased links. But, if you’ve overdone it, you may find yourself on the wrong end of either a manual unnatural links penalty or an algorithmic demotion by Google’s Penguin algorithm.

I recently came across this roundup article in which well-known SEO practitioners were asked for their favorite tactic to use when it came to obtaining links for e-commerce clients. There is some good advice in the article. But, I was surprised to see several of the experts recommend that a great way to get links was to send your product to bloggers and request a review.

What many don’t realize is that Google’s Quality Guidelines list this exact tactic under the category of "link schemes."

The guidelines include the following as an example of a paid link:

"Sending someone a 'free' product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link."
Here is an example: Let’s say that I am working for a company that specializes in kitchen décor. I could find design bloggers who are known to review products and send them some snazzy new cabinet hardware and include a note asking if they could review the product on their blog.

The blogger installs the hardware, takes some pictures, and posts them on their blog, linking back to you saying, "Thanks to Company Name for this great hardware!" The SEO’s rationale is that this is not a paid link because they have simply sent a product and asked for a review. How is Google to know whether you asked simply for a review or asked for a review plus a link? Perhaps you just sent the product so that your company could get more exposure by being mentioned by an industry leader.

I have seen several businesses receive a manual unnatural links penalty for this type of activity. I don’t know this for sure, but I am thinking that at this point the Penguin algorithm probably doesn’t do a good job at picking this type of thing up algorithmically. However, Google seems to be getting better and better at algorithmically determining which links are truly natural and it would not surprise me if Penguin catches these links in the future.

Some Examples of Unnatural Product Review Links

For three years now, my main line of work has involved manually auditing links. I have audited hundreds of thousands if not millions of links. I want to share with you the story of a very early link audit that I did. This site was a large e-commerce site that had received a manual unnatural links penalty. There were a good number of really obvious unnatural links such as keyword anchored bookmark submissions and horribly spammy directory links. And then I came across someone’s private blog in which they were blogging about their daily family activities. The link to my client came from a very short blog post that said something like this:

"As you know, our son struggles with diabetes. We have had a hard time finding a manufacturer who produces insulin syringes that are easy for us to use. We are so pleased to find that My Client’s Company makes fine tipped insulin syringes. We were able to inject him with absolutely no pain! In case you are interested, they also sell glucometers at a really good price. I would highly recommend them."

Now, for those of you who have done any work auditing links, these are really obviously unnatural links. But I have to tell you that when I first started in this line of work, I was fooled by many of the posts. I had originally marked this link as a natural mention.

But then I saw another one that was similar. And then another. And then I emailed my client and said, "What’s up with these links? Where did they come from?" The client said that they had never paid for links like that and that they were definitely from people who really liked their products.

We failed that attempt at reconsideration. In fact, we failed several attempts at reconsideration. Then finally I asked the client again whether there was ANY chance that those product mentions were paid because there were no other unnatural links that I could find.

(This was prior to the days where Google would give examples of unnatural links for every failed request.) It was then that he suddenly remembered that their previous SEO company had subscribed to a program years ago that paid bloggers $5 per link to mention their products. We removed as many of those links as we could and were able to remove the penalty.

That’s a really blatant example of a situation where something that looked like a product review was actually a paid link. But what about this next situation?

In this case, my client was an e-commerce store. They had some fantastic products and they regularly sent products to bloggers to use for giveaway contests. They did not ask for a link from the bloggers. In some cases in their write-up about the contest, the bloggers linked back to the e-commerce site with keyword anchored links.

In other cases, they linked back with non-keyword anchors or no-followed links. This sounds legit, right? The SEO company who suggested this giveaway did not ask for a link. They did not pay for a link. They did not make it a requirement that the blogger had to link to them in order to use their product as a contest prize.

Yet, they received a manual unnatural links penalty and one of the links that was given as an example link on their first failed request was a giveaway contest post.

This Is Not New News

Matt Cutts created an entire video about paid links back in March of 2014 in which he discussed examples of paid links that didn’t actually involve a money transaction. He said that when Google makes these decisions, they pay close attention to the FTC’s guidelines on product endorsements. I’d encourage you to read these guidelines as they do give some very specific information on what actually constitutes a public endorsement of a product and whether or not this would be considered a paid endorsement.

In the video, Cutts tried to give examples of what might and might not be considered a paid endorsement. He spoke about value, saying that if you gave someone a $1 pen or a low-quality free T-Shirt and then they linked to you, that this probably isn’t something that Google would be concerned about, but if I gave you $600 for a link, that was obviously a paid link.

He then spoke about some of the grey areas. For example, giving a gift card was probably just the same as giving money, but perhaps giving a free trial of perfume or buying someone a beer was not.

Cutts insinuated that sending someone a product for review that they have to return after a trial period might be OK. As soon as I heard this, I could see how people would take this sentence and say, "Ah! It’s not considered a paid link if we send someone a product for review and they have to return it, and it’s not a paid link if we offer someone a free trial of our product, so let’s send offers like this to every blogger in our niche. We’ll get so many links!" Anything that is done on a large scale with the intention of procuring links is going to look like a link scheme and is at risk for getting penalized.

In fact, Cutts went onto say that what Google is concerned about is intent. If you have a product that you are offering to bloggers for a trial period and you are hoping that after the trial period they become paying customers, or perhaps you are hoping to bring more exposure to your product, then your intent is in producing more business. If these bloggers link to you then this is probably not against the quality guidelines.

But How Would Google Know?

Whenever I have a conversation about product review links with an SEO, invariably the SEO says, "But how would Google know that this was not a natural mention? How do they know whether I slipped them money under the table or whether I sent a gift card in the mail or whether I wanted brand exposure as well as lots of links?"

After reviewing many link profiles of penalized sites I can tell you that it is quite obvious on manual review when a company has been engaging in product reviews as a link scheme. Here are some things that often stand out to me:

Quite often the links are keyword-anchored. If you’re trying to rank for "buy green widgets" and every product review uses the anchor text "buy green widgets," it’s pretty obvious that that didn’t happen by chance. Still, don’t fall into the trap of thinking that only keyword anchored links are unnatural. They’re the most obvious ones, but links with other anchors if done solely to get a link can be unnatural, too.

The links all come from blogs that are known to do reviews and link out. If I come across a link from a website that has reviewed one of my client’s products and I’m not sure whether it’s a natural mention or a paid link, one thing I’ll do is spend some time exploring the blog. Often I’ll find a section of the blog called "Advertisements” that states clearly that the blogger will happily link to you if you send them products to review. Or what I might find is that all of the blog posts in this site contain posts that smell of paid links. If I can see these types of patterns, I am quite certain that Google can as well.

You have a LOT of links like this. Anything that is done on a large scale to get links is a risky tactic. While it’s not uncommon to see someone write about a product that they like and link to the website, it can look a little suspect if a very large number of bloggers suddenly started to link in this way, especially if it happened during a short timeframe. This smacks of link-building with the intention of manipulating Google.

What Do I Do If I Have Links Like This?

If you know that you have links that are pointing to you as the result of you sending product to bloggers, what should you do? This is a really tough call. If you have a small number of these links, you may be OK to keep them. But, if you have a large number of these, or if you have product review links that are keyword-anchored, it may be best to write to the bloggers and ask for a nofollow to be added to the link. Or, if you can’t get this done, then add the site to your disavow file.

There is risk in doing this because there is a good possibility that at this point these links are actually helping your rankings. But there is also a risk in keeping these. If you end up getting a manual review by a Google webspam team member then you could get slapped with a manual penalty. While these penalties can be removed, they take a lot of work to clean up and in some cases it appears that sites never seem to be able to recover.

No one can say with certainty whether the Penguin algorithm can pick up these links. My gut instinct at this point is to say that Penguin is currently more concerned with spammy links. But, we do know that Google is continually working on refining the algorithm so that the only links that count in a site’s favor are truly natural ones.

If one day down the road, Penguin is able to determine that you had previously built links via sending product for bloggers to review, then this could cause your entire site to be demoted in search. While Penguin recovery is possible, it is quite difficult. You definitely don’t want to engage in any tactics that could get you stuck under the Penguin algorithm.

Why Am I Writing About This Now?

I debated on whether or not to write on this subject. It has been covered before. But, I was so shocked to see that many well respected SEOs are still suggesting blogger product review as a good way to get links. I think that we have to be really careful if we walk down this road. This reminds me of the conversations we used to have about guest posting.

It is not my intention to out anyone or to make Google aware of tactics that are being used. Rather, I am challenging you to think intelligently about your marketing techniques. It can be easy to fool yourself and say, "I am sending a product to this blogger because he/she is a recognized industry leader and I would love to have them recommend me," when really you would not have sent the product if that particular blogger nofollowed all of their outgoing links.

As with any marketing tactic, if your main intention is to get links, it’s a tactic that needs to be closely scrutinized. You want to be really certain that you are not inviting a penalty on your site that could depress all of your rankings.

What do you think? Are there situations where sending a product to a blogger and getting a link in exchange are acceptable? Have you ever been penalized for building links in this way?

HP's new transforming laptops are rocking B&O Play audio

With Beats now owned by Apple, HP's turning to Bang & Olufsen (B&O), the Danish electronics company and audio experts, to help tune the sound in its new PCs.

The new HP Envy x360 and Pavilion x360 are the first HP laptops running Windows 8.1 to feature B&O Play audio. HP says B&O has custom-tuned each laptop for clear and crisp sound.

"A dedicated audio island isolates the sensitive audio circuits from other signals on the motherboard," HP said. "The headphone jack limits the amount of metal parts to reduce ground noise to help further perfect the audio experiencle on HP devices."

I had a quick listen, although through the non-transforming HP Pavilion laptops (more on that in a sec), and they sound pretty loud and clear. Of course, people don't buy laptops primarily for sound, they buy them for computing needs. Still, better sound is always appreciated, especially since thin and light ultrabooks usually scrimp in this department.

Envy x360

The Envy x360 laptop, like the Spectre x360, has four modes: laptop, tent, stand and tablet. The geared hinge allows it to rotate a full 360-degrees. The geared hinge allows it to rotate a full 360-degrees.

It features a 15.6-inch IPS HD or full HD touchscreen display, fifth-generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, up to 1TB of hard drive storage or up to 256GB (SSD), and up to 8 hours and 45 minutes of battery on a single charge.

The keyboard is roomy and comfortable and the keys are backlit. There's even a number pad on this laptop.

Pricing is as follows: $679.99 for an HD touchscreen, Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage; $769.99 for a full HD touchscreen, Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage; and $899.99 for a full HD touchscreen, Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The Envy x360 will be available in the U.S. on June 13.

Pavilion x360

The Pavilions are HP's lower-tiered brand of computers. They cost less and are usually made from cheaper materials. Like the Envy x360, the Pavilion x360 transforms into four positions and features a geared hinge that flips 360-degrees backwards. It's also got the B&O Play audio.

It's made from plastic and comes in two screen sizes: 11-inch IPS HD display and 13-inch IPS HD or full HD display. The 11-inch model comes in "minty green" and "violet purple." The 13-inch comes in "natural silver," "sunset red" and "violet purple."

Power wise, the 11-inch Pavilion x360 comes with either a Pentium N3700 or a fanless Intel Core M-5Y10c processor and up to 8GB of RAM. The 13-inch has a fifth-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor and up to 16GB of RAM. Both laptops can be configured with up to 1TB of hard drive storage or up to 128GB of SSD. Both laptops can be configured with up to 1TB of hard drive storage or up to 128GB of SSD.

HP says the 11-inch can get up to 8 hours and 15 minutes and the 13-inch can get up to 10 hours and 45 minutes.

The Pavilion x360 laptops aren't the prettiest laptops, but they look like they can take a beating. Their colorful designs also suggest they're targeted at students.

An 11-inch starts at $409.99 with a touchscreen, Intel Pentium N3700 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive. The same specs, but with a an Intel Core M processor is $499.99. And the 13-inch model with an HD touchscreen, Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive starts is $529.99. These models will be available in the U.S. on May 13.

HP Pavilion Notebooks

HP also has new regular Pavilion Notebook laptops that come in 14-, 15- and 17-inch screen sizes with HD or full HD resolutions, and touchscreen and non-touchscreen options. Like the new x360 laptops, these rather gargantuan laptops also come with B&O Play audio that can be blasted through their dual speakers.

The 2015 Pavilion Notebooks will be available in seven colors and can be configured with sixth-generation AMD A-Series or fifth-gen Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors. They come with 16GB of RAM standard and up to 2TB of storage. More demanding users can also configure them with a discrete graphics processor.

Media junkies will appreciate the built-in DVD drive, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and SD card reader. The 15- and 17-inch models also come with number pads.

In terms of mobility, the 14-inch model gets up to 7 hours and 30 minutes of battery life, the 15-inch gets up to 8 hours and 15 minutes, and the 17-inch gets up to 6 hours and 15 minutes.

The Pavilion Notebooks start at $549.99 for a 14-inch with an Intel Core i3 processor, 6GB of RAM and 750GB hard drive.

The 15-inch is priced at $599.99 with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. The 15-inch with an AMD A10 processor, 8GB of RAM, 750GB of storage and a touchscreen is priced at $629.99.

The monster 17-inch comes with an Intel Pentium dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 750GB of storage.

The 10 Most Fascinating Digital Marketing Stats of the Week

The 10 most intriguing numbers from digital marketing over the last week include new data on the explosion of legal marijuana marketing as well as stats that show how online video continues to grow.

1. In today's Adweek magazine, we report how several notable publishers told us that Facebook was pushing them to make videos exclusively for the social site. Here's an example of why it's probably not a hard sell: Uproxx, a site that focuses on millennial guys, recently debuted an original Web series called Luminaries. According to The Wall Street Journal, Uproxx ran the second episode of Luminaries as a Facebook-only installment last Wednesday. The episode, which features an 18-year-old man who develops a pistol that can only be used by its owners, garnered 4 million views in the first 24 hours on the site and hit 9 million views before the end of of Friday.

2. The marijuana industry serves 50 million American consumers, per data from InvestInCannibas. Only 8 percent of that market is legalized, according to the company's research, but InvestInCannibas claimed there have been 108 startups launching weekly in the weed marketing space in recent months, with many focusing on leveraging tech to reach marijuana smokers.

3. Digital ad viewability continues to be a hot topic. The latest evidence can be seen in the startup Clearstream, which stated it expects to its revenue to increase from $12 million in 2014 to $33 million this year while offering viewability data and other services to clients like BP, Nikon, McDonalds, MGM Studios, Porsche, Subaru and Allstate.

4. The average adult will spend 5.5 hours watching online video every day this year, according to eMarketer, as consumers move away from television in favor of digital devices.
5. However, New York-based eMarketer reported that brands are still pouring money into TV advertising. In 2015, 40 percent of media spending will go to TV, totaling $70.6 billion. Meanwhile, U.S. advertisers will put 4.4 percent of all spending, or $7.8 billion, into digital video ads. It appears to be an uneven allocation of funds—eMarketer said television accounts for 36 percent of media consumption compared with 11 percent for digital.

6. Some marketers are bucking that trend, however. Thanks to a 20 percent revenue jump last year, candy seller Trolli, for instance, said it plans to increase its digital marketing budget to 40 percent of its total spending in 2015.

7. L2 examined 82 brands across six sectors and found that 62 percent of major retailers achieved stock market gains by publicizing improved website functionality. So, Wall Street seems to keep its ear pretty close to the ground when it comes to digital innovations.
8. High-end fashion retailers are starting to hone their digital chops but still have a way to go. For example, Digiday reported that Michael Kors recently said that its e-commerce channel accounts for only 7 percent of its total sales.

9. Identity management tech company Gigya's data revealed that Facebook accounted for 64 percent of all social log-ins on the Internet during the first quarter of 2015.
10. A 12-second video of a Silverback gorilla cracking the window separating the ape from onlookers at Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in Omaha, Neb., has gotten nearly 14 million views in the four days it's been on YouTube. Marketers, however, said the buzz surrounding the video—which involves children and is fairly frightening—was bad for the zoo's brand.
