Google reportedly cutting photo service loose from stagnating Google+

A report from Bloomberg claims that Google is close to revamping its photo service and will "probably" launch the new product at Google I/O.

Currently Google offers a photo service called "Google+ Photos," which ships with every Google Play Android device and automatically backs up pictures to Google cloud storage. Bloomberg says the new photo service will no longer be part of Google+, though, making Photos the latest in a string of features that have been parted out from the struggling social network.

With the Google+ dependency out of the way, the new photo service will integrate with other social networks, letting users post to Facebook and Twitter. Google+ Photos also recently integrated with Google Drive, allowing users to easily download their photos on a desktop computer.

Google+ Photos was the best part of Google+. Its on-device auto backup was a very useful feature, and transforming it from a photo sharing service into an online photo management service is the logical next step. Google has users upload every photo they take to the cloud, but it has yet to give them a way to manage all of those pictures.

The move is bad news for Google+, which Google seems to be distancing itself from as of late. Google recently integrated tweets into its search results, taking up the social role Google+ was supposed to fill. Google+ did just launch "Collections," its first major new feature in several months, which gives users a way to group their posts by topic. So while Google+ isn't dead, it does sound like Google is done artificially propping up the service.
