Google Says No Panda Update Happened This Past Weekend

There was a lot of speculation over the weekend, starting off on Friday morning and going through the weekend that there may have been a Panda or other Google update. Many SEOs and webmasters were asking if this was Panda related or something else.

I asked Google about it and they said no update happened over the weekend. Not just that there wasn’t a Panda update over the weekend, but there was no update over the weekend. Not Penguin, not top heavy, not any algorithm update.

Even after Google sent us the statement, there are still webmasters and SEOs not believing it. See the comments over here:

From where I stand, I see changes (sessions -10% to -20% and Serps variations) on 10 sites (10 countries) during the w-end. May not be panda updates, but something happened.

The webmaster and SEO discussion around this non Google update is still going on, and many webmasters are not understanding how there couldn’t have been an update.

Maybe this is related to other Google ranking changes that Google won’t disclose? It is hard to say but Google did say on record that there was no weekend update.

Mobilegeddon Begins: Here’s How It’s Going With Rollout Of Google’s Mobile Friendly Update

What to expect when the Google mobile friendly update is released today...

Today is the big day, known as Mobilegeddon, with the Google Mobile Friendly Update starting to roll out today.

Note, if you have not made your site mobile friendly yet, it isn’t too late, you can always go ahead and do it in the future and benefit from this mobile friendly algorithm. We’ve complied a list of the most common questions around this mobile update, you can read them over here.

Google has confirmed with us that the roll out “will start rolling out” today, April 21st. Google said they will publish a blog post today summarizing their original blog post on February 26th announcing the upcoming update.

Google has already posted some of those details on the French Google Webmaster Blog, which is their own version of mobile friendly FAQs. I have to imagine you will be able to find the English version of that soon on the Google Webmaster blog, but nothing yet.

We will be watching the Google mobile search results, like many of you already are, and keep you updated on the timing of this release. One important note, even when Google officially starts rolling out the update, it can take a few weeks for it to fully roll out. In the French Google Webmaster Blog, they said (used Google Translate to translate the text):

You can not definitively determine whether the ranking of your site is affected by this update as soon as April 22. We will begin to deploy mobile optimization update April 21, but it will take about a week for it applies to all pages of the index.

As of right now, I do not see the mobile friendly update live yet in the mobile results.

France Trying To Force Disclosure Of Google Algorithm, Wants To Regulate the SERP

Move intended to promote "fairness" and produce fines.

Not waiting for the European Commission’s Statement of Objections (antitrust charges) to run its course, France is taking action to regulate Google’s search results and also compel revelation of its search algorithm. TechCrunch reported on a bill now working its way through the French legislature.

According to an earlier Financial Times article (FT) about the bill:

The French senate is likely to adopt a bill this week which would allow the country’s national telecoms regulator to monitor search engines’ algorithms, with sweeping powers to ensure its results are fair and non-discriminatory . . .

If approved, the proposal would give Arcep, France’s telecoms regulator, powers to scrutinize any search engine that had sufficient power to “structure the functioning of the digital economy.” Google would be required to provide links to at least three rival search engines on its homepage, and disclose to users the “general principles of ranking.”

The stated rationale behind the bill is bringing more “fairness” to search results and also to potentially support French technology companies. According to the TechCrunch story, “Another amendment stipulating that one of the alternative search engines on display should be a French product was also supported.”

There’s no guarantee that the measures will become law in France but they’re consistent with a new aggressiveness on the part of national governments to try and regulate non-European technology companies and Google in particular.

If the bill did become law the French regulator would have the power to impose a 10 percent gross revenues penalty on Google for non-compliance. This is the same potential penalty Google could face in its antitrust case with the European Commission.
