Google+ rides again with a redesign focused on communities of interest

It's not dead yet

Google+ Redesign

A look at the Google+ redesign on iOS, web and Android
 Credit: Google

Google isn't done with its attempts at running a social network. On Tuesday, the company
gave Google+ a redesign focused on people getting together around shared interests.
When Google+ launched in 2011, it was designed as a competitor to Facebook, focused on
connecting people with their friends through a series of "circles."
That proved unsuccessful, but people started using the service to discuss things
that they're passionate about, like books and astronomy. Google has built its new design around promoting both its Community groups and its Collections of user-curated posts about specific interests.
Users can opt into the new design (which appears to be rolling out gradually) by
signing into the service on the Web and responding when they get a prompt that offers it.
Luke Wroblewski, a product director at Google, said in a post to the social network that
Google+ apps for iOS and Android will be out in the near future.
The redesign doesn't have all the features of the old Google+, so people who rely on things like Events will have to stay on the old design (which they can flip back to with the press of a button). It's not clear whether Google will bring all of the social network's functionality forward into the new design, but Wroblewski said the company isn't done developing the product.
As an avid Ingress player, I've found that Google+ is the de facto place to discuss the game and plan events around it. The social network is actually surprisingly useful for sharing posts to large groups of people and sharing content from one group to another.
All of this comes as Google has been demoting the social network from its previous place at the center of the company's products. Earlier this year, it brought cloud-based photo editing and storage capabilities that previously were tied to Google+ into Google Photos, a standalone service. Hangouts, the chat system that used to be tied to Google+, now has its own website.

Google Search on iOS picks up a new feature from Android

Google has included contextual search results (links to content from installed apps, not just web pages) for Android users since 2013. Today, iOS users will be able finally be able to do the same. Following up on its reveal during the I/O event last week, Google explained on the Inside Search blog that the company will populate search results with in-app content for both the Google App and Chrome on iOS devices starting this week. So if you tell your iPhone, like in the example below, "I need a reservation at Bombay Cricket Club" Google will return a link to the OpenTable app that takes you directly to the Bombay Cricket Club's reservation page.

This feature isn't universal just yet. Initially, Google's only returning results from a small batch of early partners including Eat24, Free Dictionary, Huffington Post, OpenTable, Pinterest, SeatGeek, Slideshare, Tapatalk, Yellow Pages, YouTube and Zillow. If you don't have any of these apps yet, don't worry. Google also announced today that it will begin popping links to apps that you haven't yet installed but probably should -- just like it already does on Android.

Google Brings Shopping Experience to YouTube

Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- YouTube wants to change the way people buy items and is harnessing the power of its videos to help connect consumers and retailers.

Sridhar Ramaswamy, Google's senior vice president of advertisements and commerce, announced what could be a revenue-boosting plan for the video sharing website Thursday during his keynote at Ad:Tech in San Francisco.

Google is adding products to its TrueView advertisements -- the spots that users can skip after watching for a certain amount of time. The hope here is that instead of looking away while the ad rolls, users will click on a product and be taken to the retailer's website to complete their transaction.

"In a world where people want things right away, this is the ultimate expression of a full-purchase journey within an ad," Ramaswamy said. "For the first time, viewers will be able to not only learn about products through video -- they’ll be able to shop for them as well -- seeing product listings within the video itself."

Ramaswamy said Wayfair, a furniture retailer, used the system for shopping advertisements. When compared to other video campaigns, he said they saw their revenue triple per view, along with a 20 percent increase in their view through rate, the number of people who stick with the ad until it ends.

YouTube also announced Thursday an early preview of 60 frame per second live streaming video. While the new frame rate is still in early preview, it could help YouTube make a play for gamers who broadcast their adventures on Amazon-owned competitor Twitch. - See more at: http://www.610kvnu.com/business/39aa4dc7623e28aa721e0361edadf2f5#sthash.FcLSkeBC.dpuf

Micromax’s Yu Yuphoria set to launch on May 12

If you’re waiting for the next big thing from Yu Televentures, the company has revealed that the Yu Yuphoria smartphone is all set for launch in a couple of weeks. A new teaser image has been posted on the official Twitter account which shows a date pointing to May 12.

It was just last month that the company finalized the Yu Yuphoria moniker for the smartphone. Up till then, it was merely know by its codename Project Caesar. Based on hints revealed by the company, we know that the device will be direct competition to the Xiaomi Redmi 2 smartphone. So, basically, we will not be seeing a successor to the Yu Yureka which goes up against the Redmi Note.

While we don’t know what the new Yu smartphone looks like, we’ve good a good scoop of hardware and software information. The Micromax-backed company has already confirmed that the phone will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop which will be the new Cyanogen 12 OS also found on the Yureka and OnePlus One devices.

Additionally, we know that there will be a 64-bit processor ticking on the inside and the chip will most likely be a 1.2GHz quad core Snapdragon 410. Also, it’s confirmed that the phone will carry 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

We can only speculate about the other components and from our expectations, the phone should deliver an HD display of around 5 inches, dual SIM support, 4G LTE and a battery with capacity of 2000mAh or higher.

We expect to see more details on the Yu Yuphoria show up ahead of its May 12 launch – So stay tuned.

Google Nexus 5 Deal: Phone Available for $199 with Free Year of Service

The Google Nexus 5 was one of the better smartphones in 2013 and it still is a very capable device. The Nexus 5 usually comes with Android 4.4, but this deal comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop already pre-installed and ready to go.

The calling plan will provide customers with unlimited minutes and texts and 500 MB of 4G from the Sprint network.

The Nexus 5 has a 1,920x1,080-pixel display, 16 GB of nonexchangeable storage and fast performance from the Snapdragon 800 processor.
The free year of calling comes from third-party wireless carrier FreedomPop. FreedomPop uses the Sprint network to provide wireless service to customers.

Customers choosing to take advantage of this offer from StackSocial will be shipped a Google Nexus 5 in a plain box. Inside the box will be a charging cable and charging cube. The phone is refurbished but customers likely will not be able to tell. Before buying this deal, customers should ensure that Sprint offers coverage in their area.

The phone will come unlocked which means users can take it to another CDMA or GSM carrier if they want. If they do this before the one year of free service is up, their service from FreedomPop will be deactivated.

This deal is great for someone with an older phone. The Nexus 5, even though it is not the latest phone from Google, still remains an excellent smartphone. Since it is upgraded to the latest version of Android Lollipop, it will look and feel just like the newest smartphones on sale today.

A year of free service really makes this deal worth seriously looking into. The 500 MB data cap is quite small, but even if a user goes over and has to pay the penalty, it is still much cheaper than most individual calling and data plans that can exceed $100 per month.
What do you think of this deal from StackSocial? Leave your comments below and let us know.

Google Plus sends out its first tweet

New Delhi: Nearly four years after setting up its Twitter account, Google Plus- Google's own social networking platform- sent out its first tweet.

The Google Plus Twitter account that goes with the handle @GooglePlus was set up in July 2011, but only tweeted on May 1, 2015.
It is a little surprising for the tweet to arrive at this time when Google had announced in March that it would dismantle the social network into two separate products- streams and photos, a Mashable report notes.

While it might not be as heart breaking a news for others as for those handful of Google Plus followers, the latest, or should we say, the only tweet coming from the network hints to Google's
attempt at bringing to notice the service's existence to others and aim at gaining some #love.

Since its launch in June 2011, Google Plus has failed to garner popularity with its 111 million users as of April, 2015, as compared to Facebook that boasts of more than a billion-strong user base and Twitter with its 302 million users.
