MICROSOFT HAS REVEALED ITS ANIME MASCOT FOR WINDOWS 10

If you’re a fan of anime, you’re likely applauding Microsoft for its latest promotional efforts. Microsoft’s Japanese offices have unveiled the company’s mascot for Windows 10, the latest operating system set to debut this summer. The mascot is an anime-stylized image of a blue-haired woman in a miniskirt, according to WindowsCentral.

The young woman, who is currently nameless, will have her own campaign in June. You’ll be able to offer your opinion on what her name should be. Thus far, we know that she is 17 years old and comes from 100 years in the future. She works at the gadget-heavy Tokyo neighborhood of Akihabara, and in terms of hobbies, she loves gaming (of course). Her attire gives her a schoolgirl-like appearance located on the corner of chic and cute.

Voiceover Actress Ai Nonaka is slated to provide the blue-haired girl with a voice of her own. If you enter the public campaign to name the mascot, which begins on June 19, you’ll be eligible for a series of prizes. Five Grand Prizes will be autographed by Nonaka herself.

While this may seem a little odd in Western culture, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Microsoft has used this type of advertising in Japan. The company had similar mascots for Windows 7, 8 and Internet Explorer.

Nanami Madobe, a similar-looking blue-haired schoolgirl, was the mascot for Windows 7, and she was given her own video, according to The Verge. Two different characters were used to promote Windows 8 and RT, both of them being schoolgirls (Madobe Yu and Madobe Ai). And a blond-haired anime girl named Inori Aizawa was introduced to promote Internet Explorer. Microsoft gave Inori her own Facebook page, video, website, and a series of wallpapers.

Throughout the past decade, there have been more than 10 separate anime characters created to raise awareness of Microsoft’s products. The latest creation for Windows 10 shows that the practice won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Microsoft Squeezes Office Onto Android Phones

Already available on Android tablets, Microsoft's Office mobile apps finally arrive on Android smartphones.

Microsoft is finally closing a major gap in its Office mobile app portfolio.
Jared Spataro, general manager of Microsoft Office 365 marketing, announced on May 19 that the company has released preview versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Android smartphones such as Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S6. Microsoft released a limited preview of Office for Android tablets last November, before opening up the early-access program to all comers just after the new year.
"The Office for Android phone apps are modern, optimized for touch and designed for work on the go," said Spataro in a statement. First, Microsoft is requiring prospective beta testers to register with the Office for Android community on Google+. Once registered, users can click on the respective Word, Excel and PowerPoint links.
Then, they wait. "Wait for ~4 hours as Google play takes time to replicate permissions, then click above mentioned links and follow the download links to install apps using Google play store," instructs the Microsoft Office for Android Google Plus page.

"Bringing these apps to Preview first provides you with an early look at the apps, while enabling us to gather critical user feedback helping us shape and improve the app experience on a wide range of Android phones across the world," Spataro said. "The feedback we received from the Office for Android tablet Preview in January was critical to ensuring a high quality and consistent Office experience across Android tablet devices."

Microsoft Office for Android phones is separate from the Office Mobile app released in 2013. Hinting that the latter's days may be numbered, "Office Mobile app for Android phone will still be available in the app store during Preview," he said. "We will disclose more about our plans for this app later in the year when we announce general availability of the new Office for Android phone app."

As in the iOS versions of the apps, a consistent user experience that transcends device type and operating system is key to Microsoft's vision of mobile-enabled productivity.

"The Office apps combine the familiar look, feel and quality of Office with a touch-friendly experience designed for Android phones," Spataro stated. "Documents open and render beautifully, with all formatting and content in the right place." Many of Office's navigational elements and options were placed within easy reach of a user's thumb, near the bottom of the screen, he added.

Embracing Google's Android ecosystem fits with Microsoft's mobile-first product strategy.
Despite a surge in the iPhone's popularity—due in no small part to the record-breaking debut of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus—Android still dominates the smartphone scene. In February, International Data Corp. (IDC), an IT analyst group, announced that the mobile operating system had nabbed 81.5 percent of the smartphone OS market in 2014, on shipments of over 1 billion units. Apple iOS took the No. 2 spot with nearly 15 percent of the market and shipments of 192.7 million iPhones.

Microsoft Corporation Is Bringing Windows Mobile Back From the Dead

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Windows Phone is just 5 years young, yet the software giant is killing off the brand. Just like they say, out with the old and in with the . . . older.

That's right: Microsoft is resurrecting its old Windows Mobile brand as part of its broader platform strategy with the forthcoming launch of Windows 10. The company is ambitiously planning on unifying all of its platforms with the new release, which it has said will be the last major version. Future updates will be more incremental.

That is a lot of versions

There will be seven different versions of Windows 10, each targeting a specific market: Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Mobile Enterprise, and IoT Core. Each version will come loaded with features tailored to their respective markets, as you would expect.

Home is meant for typical consumers; Pro is designed for small businesses; and Mobile will power smartphones and small tablets. Enterprise, Education, and Mobile Enterprise will be available to volume-licensing customers.

The shift back to Windows Mobile (the full name is Windows 10 Mobile) is a bit peculiar, though, since Windows Mobile had a rather poor track record in the market during the earlier days of the smartphone. To be fair, Windows Mobile boasted a respectable market share back then, peaking at 42% in 2007 (the year Apple launched the iPhone). But the issue was that mainstream users had yet to adopt smartphones -- Microsoft had a huge slice of a small pie.

With the seventh major release, Microsoft rebranded its mobile platform as Windows Phone. It took some time for Windows Phone to gain any semblance of traction, as iOS and Android quickly became dominant. Windows Phones accounted for just 2.7% of the market in 2014, according to IDC. That might not sound like much, but it earned Microsoft the No. 3 market spot. It helps that nearly all other smartphone platforms, such as BlackBerry (0.4% share), have effectively evaporated.

What Microsoft did not say
However, Microsoft did not elaborate on pricing for any of these Windows 10 versions. That is a pretty important piece of the puzzle that has major implications for investors.

The company has vaguely discussed the idea of implementing a Windows-as-a-Service model for quite some time. While Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, and there will not be any ongoing licensing fees, its monetization strategy will shift toward search, games, and apps. That will be particularly true for Windows 10 Mobile, as Windows Phone was one of the first Microsoft operating systems to become free for OEMs.

It is worth pointing out that the free upgrade to Windows 10 only applies to Home, Pro, and Mobile. The Enterprise, Education, and Mobile Enterprise versions will not get a free upgrade path, which makes sense considering that commercial licensing remains the bulk of revenue, comprising nearly half of sales last quarter.

Windows Mobile quickly fell by the wayside the first time around, but can it succeed this time?
