Microsoft combines Cortana and Bing with Microsoft Research to accelerate new features

On Thursday, Microsoft took the unusual step of combining its Bing and Cortana product teams with Microsoft Research, in a bid to accelerate innovation for both the search engine and the digital assistant.
The move was part of a broader reorganization that saw Microsoft split its Applications and Services Group, which also included Microsoft’s Office applications, into two separate organizations. Office applications will form their own group.
Though Microsoft has asked researchers to work on projects that could eventually be commercialized, combining teams that work on active products, such as Cortana and Bing, with the future-facing teams that comprise Microsoft Research, is in fact unique within Microsoft. Together, Bing and Cortana, plus Microsoft’s Information Platform and Ambient Computing and Robotics teams, will form the Microsoft AI and Research Group. All told, the group will include more than 5,000 computer scientists and engineers, Microsoft said.
The newly-formed AI and Research Group will be led by Harry Shum, who's previously led Microsoft Research and Bing’s engineering team.
Why this matters: For over a year, Microsoft has been injecting intelligence into as many products as possible. Cortana can remind you when to leave for an upcoming appointment, based on your calendar and the current traffic conditions. Business intelligence products like PowerBI now take center stage among Microsoft’s enterprise products. Skype Translate, which Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella has described as “magic,” uses speech recognition and machine learning to translate spoken conversations in real time. Placing the Bing and Cortana teams within Microsoft’s research group probably means that Microsoft hopes to push out feature improvements to both products at a faster rate.

Democratizing AI

At the company’s Ignite conference this week, Nadella talked about Microsoft’s goals to bring intelligence to the masses, in much the same way that it has done for data.
“At Microsoft, we are focused on empowering both people and organizations, by democratizing access to intelligence to help solve our most pressing challenges,” Nadella said in a statement. “To do this, we are infusing AI into everything we deliver across our computing platforms and experiences.”
Microsoft’s reorganization was spurred in part by the decision by Qi Lu, who led the former Applications and Services Group, to leave the company following a bicycle accident, according to Geekwire. What remains of the Applications and Services Group will be renamed the Office Product Group, led by Microsoft executive Rajesh Jha, the site reported.

Placing Cortana and Bing within a research organization means that both of those groups will directly benefit from the proximity to researchers. Cortana is in a tight race with Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant—and the latter has moved ahead, in my estimation. However, Microsoft does not intend to slow the addition of intelligent features to other products like Office or Azure, according to a company representative.
Shum said as much in a blog post announcing the change. “I’ve worked on both research and product teams, and I see incredible potential for this new group,” Shum wrote. “Today, AI is shifting the computer science research supply chain and blurring lines between research and product. End-to-end innovation in AI will not come from isolated research labs alone, but from the combination of at-scale production workloads together with deep technology advancements in algorithms, systems and experiences.”

Microsoft adds ability to call phones to Skype for Web

Microsoft is adding new capabilities to its Skype for Web, as well as its Skype for Business services. Skype for Web users can now call cell phones and landlines directly.

Microsoft has updated its Skype for Web offering with the ability to call mobile phones and landlines.

skypeforwebphonecalls.jpg

Users can make international calls directly from Skype for Web to cell phones or landlines using Skype credits or subscriptions, company officials said on March 14.
To access Skype for Web, users can go to Skype.com or web.skype.com and sign in and connect. Skype for Web, which is still in beta, alleviates the need to download the Skype app before conferencing and/or instant-messaging others.
Microsoft also added the ability to watch a YouTube video directly from inside Skype for Web via a video link. The ability to add people to a conversation, even if they're not on Skype is another feature Microsoft has brought to Skype for Web, execs said. And if users are signed into Skype for Web, they now will receive notifications even if they're in another tab or app.
In other Skype news -- though on the business side of the house, not the consumer one -- Microsoft last week expanded the availability of its PSTN conferencing to 17 additional countries, bringing the total number of countries where PSTN conferencing is available to to 32. Microsoft officials say that number will be nearly 100 by the end of June 2016. PSTN conferencing is public switched telephone network conferencing.
There's a new Cloud Connector Edition of Skype for Business Server coming in April. The Cloud Connector Edition will allow users to connect existing phone lines/number to Office 365 using optimized, preconfigured virtual machine images.
In addition, Microsoft and conferencing equipment vendors also launched a new initiative, codenamed "Project Rigel" to bring the Skype Meeting experience that will be featured onMicrosoft Surface Hubs -- whenever they are finally available-- to any meeting room with a display or projector. Via Project Rigel, Windows 10 devices will be able to control Skype for Business online meetings and remotely connect users starting in the second half of 2016.

Microsoft High On Office 365 Success

Summary

Do you know how popular Office 365 is compared to Google Apps for Work? You'll be surprised!
Microsoft's sales strategy for Office 365 has been aggressive and controversial, but it has been extremely effective.
The ball is now in Google's court. Can they respond with an equally aggressive strategy and astonish us with their numbers over the next few quarters?
When I first read about how Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) was slowly edging out Google (GOOGGOOGL) Apps from the office suite space, I was a little surprised. To be honest, I didn't really know the numbers, but I had a bias towards Google Apps. I'd been using it for quite a while and everyone I knew used it as well, so in my mind it was the best option in the business.
But the moment I started digging for the facts, I was shocked by how cleverly Microsoft has been going about decimating Google's position in the top three - along with salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) and Box (NYSE:BOX). I also found several interesting things about both Google Apps as well as Office 365.

A Primer on Office Suite from Google and Microsoft

An office suite from a cloud application perspective is a set of tools designed for businesses to operate more efficiently and with a much lower investment in IT infrastructure. It's not an infrastructure service as much as an appealing cloud environment, where company employees can collaborate more effectively, access their files from anywhere without major security concerns and access the tools they need to do their jobs.

Microsoft’s new Android keyboard gives you quick access to contacts and files

Microsoft may have just purchased SwiftKey, but today it's releasing a new Android keyboard of its own. It's called the Hub Keyboard, and it provides quick access to your Office files, your local clipboard, your contacts, and a translation tool.
A small bar sits on top of the keyboard, and tapping on its icons lets you grab information from elsewhere on your phone without having to hop into another app. Tapping on the contacts button, for instance, let me search for a friend and then have their name and phone number automatically inserted into my document. The translate button let me type in English and have it automatically transformed into Spanish, or a selection of other languages.
The Hub Keyboard comes from Microsoft's Garage group, which makes experimental apps with the goal of trying out new ideas. There are some interesting ones in this keyboard, like the translation tool, but other aspects of the keyboard may make it a nonstarter for daily use. You can't view autocomplete suggestions while the quick access buttons are up, for instance, and the documents button is only useful for people who store their files with Office 365. On the other hand, Microsoft suggests that new quick access options could come to the Hub Keyboard over time, and you'd be able to turn off the ones that you don't find useful.
Microsoft has been putting more and more apps out on Android over the past year, with it now offering the Office suite, a home screen launcher, and popular email and calendar apps. It doesn't necessarily need a keyboard app now that it's the owner of SwiftKey, which has been a top keyboard alternative for years, but Hub gives it another opportunity to see what features might catch on and how it can better integrate services like Office 365 and translation. Microsoft also released an Android app called Sprightly this week, which is meant to let businesses quickly put together fliers.
While there's no word of an iOS launch for the Hub Keyboard, Microsoft does have an iPhone keyboard in the works, too.

Microsoft Officially Unveils Its Arrow Launcher For Android

There are a number of ways to customize an Android smartphone, but one of the more unexpected tools to emerge earlier this year was Arrow, an Android launcher application designed by Microsoft. This summer, an unfinished version of the launcher was discovered by way of a Google+ group for beta testers. But, today, the app has gone live on the Google Play store for all to try.
While it may seem surprising to see Microsoft building a tool that lets you customize the way you use your Android smartphone, it’s reflective of the company’s new strategy to embrace cross-platform development instead of trying to lock everyone into Microsoft’s own software and services. You can see this with the release of its flagship Office application for competing platforms like iOS and Android, for example, as well as with its virtual assistant app Cortana.
With Arrow, however, the idea is to offer a different interface for Android that makes it easier and quicker to access your most frequently used apps, as well as message friends, take notes, or access your favorite apps and settings.
The launcher has a bit of an iOS 9 feel, at times, though without being a direct clone of the iOS interface.
It somewhat mimics Apple’s recent Spotlight search update which now offers suggested apps and contacts when you swipe right on the iOS homescreen. While Apple’s “Siri Suggestions” are based on more than recency – iOS also considers how you use your phone or what apps you launch at different times of day  – Arrow’s “Recent” screen offers a similar ability to access apps, files, photos, or contacts you need quickly. That is, things you want to get to having to swipe through screens or dig around in apps.
In addition, Arrow organizes your applications based on your usage, which means that those you launch the most will appear at the top of the list.

You can also customize a dock that you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access – yes, a lot like iOS’s Control Center, right down to the semi-transparent interface. Here, you can access favorite apps or commonly-used settings, like airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a flashlight and more – Settings you would find in Control Center, too.
Another feature lets you quickly find people, then message, email, or call them with a swipe, while another lets you create notes and reminders.
Similar to some other Android launchers, you can use Arrow to re-arrange pages, set pages as your homescreen, organize and use widgets, theme your icons, and more. The only notable Microsoft integration (for now, at least) is the addition of wallpapers from Bing.
While some of Arrow’s interface is reminiscent of iOS, the larger strategy here could be more similar to Yahoo’s Aviate – an Android launcher Yahoo bought to get it a position in the mobile ecosystem where it doesn’t have its own platform, only software applications. Microsoft is in a similar boat. Though it does have Windows Phone, that OS and related devices only represents a tiny percentage of the overall smartphone market. That’s why Microsoft has embraced cross-platform development, and why it’s experimenting with customizations like this with Arrow.
If Arrow established traction, Microsoft could take advantage of the app to push or recommend its own apps and services like Office, OneDrive, Outlook, Bing and more to end users.
To be clear, Arrow is a Microsoft Garage project for the time being. That’s the internal R&D group that rolls out experiments to see which may have staying power or be worthy of further development. It’s not even the first Android app to emerge from this idea tank – previous Garage efforts have included an Android lock screen called Next and an Android Wear search assistant Torque, for example.
Arrow, in fact, was built by the same team behind Next and is now available in English and Chinese. The app is a free download from Google Play.

Microsoft Corporation, Intel Corporation See Great Market Potential For PC-on-a-Stick In India

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) see a bright spot in the Indian market with a new approach PC-on-a-stick, as many households in India even lack a regular personal computer (PC) and cannot afford it; a relatively cheap PC-on-a-stick could be the choice of many consumers.

The compute stick would turn any LCD or LED monitor into a full-fledged PC as well as a smart TV that can carry out the necessary functions. For this, all the monitor requires is a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port to turn the display device into a PC. When connected, it supports mouse and keyboard devices as well, even users can stream media content directly from the Internet onto their TV. Although the compute stick is a bit short on processing power at this stage in time, it is able to match performance of some tablet computers.

According to Microsoft India's director for Windows Business, Vineet Durani, a mere 10% households throughout the country have computer access which is a worry. "We can position this stick PC as a cheap alternative to PC. In those areas, chances are that people might not have PC but they certainly have a TV in their house," Mr. Durani said. Out of 11 million TVs shipped annually, nine million LEDs are equipped with an HDMI port.

Microsoft is already in talks with TV manufacturers in India and looking to make a deal to see TVs bundled with a stick computer. It is also encouraging distributors to offer this product among other traditional IT products such as mobile phones. It would certainly increase the number of households that would have computer access. Mr. Durani claimed: "TV manufacturers are eager to experiment with this product."

Intel's Compute Stick is also a product ready for launch in India. It is so small that it fits in the palm of one's hand. It features Microsoft Windows 8.1 (as it is pretty sure it won’t get the free Windows 10 upgrade), a quad-core processor, 2 GB memory, and a 32 GB storage capacity. Although it does not sound that great, the compute stick features the necessary connectivity like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB ports as well, thus creates an option for those without a PC to get work done.

Microsoft Corporation Stock: Wunderlich Initiates Coverage With Hold Rating

Microsoft Corporation Stock: Wunderlich Initiates Coverage With Hold Rating

According to a research note published on Tuesday, Wunderlich has initiated coverage on Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock with a Hold rating and a target price of $52. The sell-side firm noted that Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella was promoted to the designation in February last year, and eagerly set about to take Microsoft from a monopolistic PC and hardware company to a new-age mobile business.

Wunderlich believes that the strategic transition should make Microsoft stronger over the long-term with improving revenue growth and margin expansion. Microsoft’s cloud platform Azure and cloud applications such as Office 365 are under-appreciated and will likely be the key pillars to Microsoft’s growth in the future.

The firm noted that the company addresses both enterprise and consumer software across many different segments, categories, and device types including PCs, phones, tablets, and enterprise servers. Third-party industry forecasters expect IT spending to approach $1.25 trillion for data center, device, and enterprise software, with an approximate 3.1% growth rate on a constant currency basis.

Wunderlich analyst, Rob Breza stated, “Microsoft is addressing many secular movements within IT such as mobile and cloud computing; however, its historical Windows franchise will face pressure as the evolution continues, creating volatility and, more important, opportunity.”

The firm also said that the company’s large installed enterprise base gives it an inherent opportunity to consistently up-sell new products. The firm believes that the shift to cloud and Microsoft’s cloud offerings should allow the company to offer more sophisticated products to more users, specifically in the SMB market, which typically could not afford to maintain an on-premise solution that is designed for large enterprise.

Mr. Breza estimates 2015 non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $2.67 on total revenue of $93.54 billion. He expects the company to report 2016 non-GAAP EPS of $2.86, generating total revenue of $96.61 billion during the year.

According to Bloomberg, 23 analysts rate Microsoft stock a Hold, 14 consider it a Hold, and seven advocate a Sell. The consensus 12-month price target on the stock is $49.9, showing upside potential of 9.1% on Monday's closing price.

Microsoft Corporation Skype Rolls Out Updates To Fix Crash Bug

Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) team behind Skype has reportedly rolled out updates for the application running on previous versions of Windows, along with Google Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating devices, and also for Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS devices.

The updates serve as a fix for the crash bug that was spotted by several users, who complained that upon receiving a string of eight text characters, their Skype applications crashed. However, this wasn’t the end of their misery as the application kept on crashing even after being restarted.

Skype announced this update through a blog post which stated: “We are aware of a problem that was causing Skype clients to crash. Our engineering teams worked hard to resolve this issue, and have released updates for all impacted Skype platforms." Reports also indicate that Skype for Mac remained unharmed by the crash bug, but developers still decided to roll out an update for Mac devices. The updated version is being stated as 7.5; however, the rest of the updates are mentioned as 5.13 for iOS, 5.4 for Android devices and 7.7 for Windows.

The response is a fairly quick one by the Skype's team, who state that users can continue to use Skype on their devices once again and securely this time, simply by updating the app to these versions. A similar crash bug was also found causing issues for the messaging application on iOS, which also forced users to reboot their devices, yet the iMessage application still remained inaccessible.

Skype’s response to the crash bug comes out earlier and quicker than Apple, which offered a temporary fix and announced that the team of developers is working on proper a fix, which will be rolled out in the upcoming days or weeks.

Microsoft Corporation Prices Windows 10 Home At $119, Pro Edition At $199

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced the price of its upcoming operating system, Windows 10, confirming that it will cost the same as its previous OS, Windows 8. The Windows 10 is scheduled to be released on July 29, 2015.

The tech giant announced that the Windows 10 Home edition will be priced at $119, and Windows 10 Professional will be available for $199. People who are wishing to upgrade their genuine Windows 10 Home to the Professional edition will be able to do so by buying a $99 Windows 10 Pro Pack.

The company will also provide free upgrade on its OS; however, as previously mentioned, it will only be available to those who have a genuine copy of Windows on their machines. Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, who have bought a new qualified PC, will also be eligible for the upgrade. The free upgrade offer is valid till June 29, 2016.

The company has introduced a reservation feature to make sure that the upgrade process is as smooth as possible. The reservation would allow users to confirm their machines are compatible with Windows 10. After the reservation, files which are needed for the upgrade will be downloaded on the PC. These files are required to speed up the final installation. Hence, users who later change their mind about upgrading can cancel their reservation.

The upgrade will be offered on the previous model of the OS. For example, if a user has been running Windows 7 Home, then he will receive an upgrade to Windows 10 Home. Similarly, a person who has a Windows 8.1 Professional will receive an update to Windows 10 professional. Users will be able to download the upgrade as soon as it is available.

Providing a free upgrade is a clever strategy by Microsoft to ensure that almost everyone shifts to the new OS. One of the reasons as to why Windows 8.1 was not very successful was because people were not simply willing to upgrade their PC to the new OS. However, by offering the OS for free, users will have an extra incentive to install the new OS. By offering the upgrade for a limited time only, Microsoft is making sure that users shift to Windows 10 at their earliest.

Microsoft Now Allegedly Set To Release Surface Pro 4 in July: Is Apple Running Scared?

There have been so many back and forth rumors about when the Surface Pro 4 will be officially released that it’s hard to keep count. However, several sites are now claiming that it will be released in July, the same time Windows 10 will be released. Here is what Master Herald has to say.

“Now that May is almost over, it is unlikely that Microsoft would still pull off a surprise and launch the Surface Pro 4. It is thus very likely that Microsoft would be launching the latest iteration to its hybrid device in July, which happens to be the same month that the company will be launching its Window 10 desktop and mobile operating system.”

Vine Report insists that the Surface Pro 4 will have an Intel Core M Broadwell chip, ditching the original plan to ship it with the more powerful Intel Core i5 or even the Intel Core i7 processors. Several people on the internet have cast doubt about this rumor, which appears to be part of the internet echo chamber without any actual confirmation.

According to BGR, the Surface Pro 4 will get rid of the fan like the new MacBook, but they don’t think that automatically means it will pack a slower Intel Core M processor. They also believe that that the Surface Pro 4 is expected to feature a 12-inch display with 2160 x 1440 pixels of resolution, which is the same as the Surface Pro 3. However, other sources claim the Surface Pro 4 will have a 4K screen.

The Surface Pro’s main competitor with be the iPad Pro, which doesn’t have a specific release date. According to some sources, the iPad Pro will have a 13-inch screen and run a variant of Apple’s current OS X operating system. It will also have a pressure-sensitive stylus. MacRumors believes the device will be released in late 2015 and compared it to previous iPads.

“While rumors on the larger iPad are somewhat scarce, it’s believed the tablet will closely resemble the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3, offering a thin chassis and slim bezels.”

The article also notes that iPad Pro may measure 7mm and it could include several iPad Air 2 features like 2GB of RAM and Touch ID. Even though MacRumors is the best when it comes to rumor accuracy, they seem to be basing their assumptions on other reports as well.

The release of both Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 and Apple’s iPad Pro should really give the tablet industry a desperately needed kick. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 was a groundbreaking laptop/tablet hybrid and it has not only influenced Microsoft to expand on its flagship tablet, but other companies as well.

Microsoft to Clear the Windows Store Clutter

Ever go to the Windows Store looking for a particular app and find dozens of options, all of which pretty much do the exact same thing? It's a common problem for app stores, but Microsoft is now looking to remedy it for Windows users.

The tech giant on Wednesday announced a new effort aimed at eliminating app clutter and ensuring all apps are appropriately priced and clearly labeled — so you can find what you're looking for faster and easier. As part of the effort, Microsoft has introduced a stricter app certification policy for new and existing apps to help cut down on the bloat.

"These changes will help customers more rapidly find the apps they are specifically seeking," Microsoft's Bernardo Zamora wrote in a blog post. "We will identify apps that are not following the policies, informing developers of issues we locate, and removing apps that don't comply."

Zamora admitted that many apps in the Windows Store have similar icons and titles, which can be confusing to users. Other apps have icons and titles that don't even match their content. That's about to change.

Going forward, Microsoft plans to remove any apps that "can't be distinguished from other apps in the Store, have icons or titles that are too similar to other apps already in the Store, or don't properly represent the functionality of the app," Zamora wrote.

The company also plans to remove apps that are overpriced. Developers can still set their own prices, but Microsoft said that similar apps should be comparable in price.
"If an app is priced significantly higher than other apps in its category and it is determined that users might be confused and believe (incorrectly) that the higher price is warranted based on superior functionality or value, it may be removed from the Store," Zamora wrote.

Microsoft will also now require informational apps like guides, tutorials, instructional content, and reference materials to be labeled as such. This way, you won't accidentally purchase a game guide when you meant to buy the actual game.

Finally, Microsoft is also cracking down on apps that are not labeled correctly. The company said that developers sometimes use popular and irrelevant keywords to manipulate their app's placement in search results or overall ranking. From now on, apps with inaccurate titles, descriptions, and tags may get the heave-ho.

The changes come after Microsoft last year removed more than 1,500 apps from the Windows Store as part of an effort to crack down on shady, misleading apps.

MICROSOFT HAS REVEALED ITS ANIME MASCOT FOR WINDOWS 10

If you’re a fan of anime, you’re likely applauding Microsoft for its latest promotional efforts. Microsoft’s Japanese offices have unveiled the company’s mascot for Windows 10, the latest operating system set to debut this summer. The mascot is an anime-stylized image of a blue-haired woman in a miniskirt, according to WindowsCentral.

The young woman, who is currently nameless, will have her own campaign in June. You’ll be able to offer your opinion on what her name should be. Thus far, we know that she is 17 years old and comes from 100 years in the future. She works at the gadget-heavy Tokyo neighborhood of Akihabara, and in terms of hobbies, she loves gaming (of course). Her attire gives her a schoolgirl-like appearance located on the corner of chic and cute.

Voiceover Actress Ai Nonaka is slated to provide the blue-haired girl with a voice of her own. If you enter the public campaign to name the mascot, which begins on June 19, you’ll be eligible for a series of prizes. Five Grand Prizes will be autographed by Nonaka herself.

While this may seem a little odd in Western culture, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time that Microsoft has used this type of advertising in Japan. The company had similar mascots for Windows 7, 8 and Internet Explorer.

Related: Windows 10 Build 10122 rolls out in the fast lane

Nanami Madobe, a similar-looking blue-haired schoolgirl, was the mascot for Windows 7, and she was given her own video, according to The Verge. Two different characters were used to promote Windows 8 and RT, both of them being schoolgirls (Madobe Yu and Madobe Ai). And a blond-haired anime girl named Inori Aizawa was introduced to promote Internet Explorer. Microsoft gave Inori her own Facebook page, video, website, and a series of wallpapers.

Throughout the past decade, there have been more than 10 separate anime characters created to raise awareness of Microsoft’s products. The latest creation for Windows 10 shows that the practice won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrades to suppress PC sales

Windows 10 won't give PC sales a fillip, because punters don't think an upgrade is enough reason to buy a new computer.

So says abacus-wielding firm IDC, whose new Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker emerged today and predicted “ PC shipments are expected to fall by -6.2% in 2015.”

“Windows 10 should be a significant contributor to the PC market,” the firm writes, because it offers “an upgrade path from Windows 7 for commercial users and a range of features boosting convenience and integrating the user experience across platforms.”

Microsoft's free upgrade plans, however, mean PC sales won't rise on the back of the operating system's release. Consumers will take the free upgrade and instead “prioritize spending on phones, tablets, and wearable devices like the Apple Watch during the holiday season.”

Business, as ever, will wait and do some testing before deploying the new version of Windows.

That all adds up to another poor year for PC sales, and flat sales into the future. Here's the tale of the tape:

PC Shipments by Product Category and Region (Shipments in millions)

Product Category

Table Note:  Mature Markets include U.S., Western Europe, Japan, and Canada. Emerging Markets includes Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Middle East, and Africa (MEA).

The strengthening US dollar isn't helping matters either, the analyst firm says, because it decreases buying power in plenty of other nations.

There's a ray of sunshine coming in 2016, when IDC predicts PC sales will decline by just 0.2 per cent. There may even be a little growth after that, with 2019 sales tipped to represent be 0.4 per cent compound annual growth. Smartphones, by contrast, are tipped to enjoy a five-year compound annual growth rate of 8.5 per cent. Tablet sales, the firm said yesterday, are growing at about 2.1 per cent a year with cellular-equipped fondleslabs taking a few points off WiFi-only machines to emerge with 40 per cent of the market by 2019, up from today's 31 per cent.

Microsoft Has Hijacked Android In A Hostile Takeover

Microsoft has its own mobile operating system and devices. Thanks to a variety of legal and strategic moves, though, Microsoft also owns a sizeable chunk of its largest competitor. Microsoft already generates significant revenue from Android and it is poised to rake in the cash from Android users thanks to a newly announced partnership to pre-install Microsoft Office and Skype apps on a wide variety of Android tablets.

Microsoft revealed yesterday that it has entered a strategic agreement with 20 different Android OEMs—including Sony and LG—to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype on their Android tablets. A new LG tablet and the Sony Xperia Z4 are slated to come with the Microsoft apps pre-installed in the next 90 days.

“Our strategic agreements with these partners demonstrate how Microsoft is leveraging the scale of the hardware ecosystem, and working with partners in new ways to deliver rich experiences to our customers,” said Microsoft’s Nick Parker in a blog post announcing the new relationships. “This is a cornerstone of our cross-platform services strategy, to bring an array of Microsoft services to every person on every device.”

It is part of Microsoft’s broader cross-platform strategy. Under Satya Nadella’s leadership Microsoft has taken a much more aggressive platform-agnostic stance rather than trying to force users to stay on Microsoft’s own operating systems and devices. Microsoft has made significant progress in providing access to its tools and services no matter what platform or device a customer chooses. More importantly, it has focused on ensuring a consistent and seamless experience which makes it more likely customers will choose to use those familiar Microsoft apps no matter what device they’re on.

Microsoft offers the same—or sometimes better—apps on iOS than it does on Android, or even on its own Windows Phone mobile devices sometimes. However, iOS is a closed ecosystem controlled by Apple. Apple owns the operating system. Apple manufactures the hardware. Apple controls access to the App Store. Microsoft is doing an excellent job of navigating iOS but there’s no mistaking that Microsoft is playing in Apple’s world.

Android is a different story. While Android was developed by and is closely tied to Google it is an open source operating system. Google doesn’t “own” it per se, and Google makes zero dollars of revenue from licensing the Android OS itself. Microsoft on the other hand generates about $2 billion a year in revenue from Android manufacturers in agreements over licensing Microsoft patents that are infringed by the Android OS.

Because Google does not own the platform and has no direct control over the manufacturers who produce Android smartphones and tablets, Microsoft is free to negotiate arrangements like this one—strategic alliances that enable Microsoft to more or less hijack Android from the inside. Android users generally default to using Google productivity apps and services because they’re pre-installed on the Android devices and tied to the Google account the user logs into the mobile device with. It’s just easier to use the apps that are already there rather than seeking out and installing something else.

By making the Microsoft apps available by default on those same devices Microsoft is reducing the friction for users. With the Microsoft apps pre-installed they become the path of least resistance. They offer a consistent, familiar experience and integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Office applications on other devices. Storing files in OneDrive makes them instantly accessible using those same Office applications on other platforms and the user doesn’t need to re-learn anything or figure out how to convert files.

Microsoft: Edge Performs Better than Chrome and Firefox

This article outlines some of the performance optimizations done for the Chakra engine and the Octane and Jet Stream benchmark results for Edge, Chrome and Firefox.

As detailed in A Developer’s View on Microsoft Edge, the Redmond browser maker has changed their attitude towards web technologies, web standards and compliance with other browsers. Not only they discarded some old IE components and decided to implement HTML, JavaScript and CSS standards to the letter with the new rendering engine, but they started to address an issue that was long due: performance.

The main performance bottlenecks in IE were related to processing JavaScript, Microsoft fixing some of these in the new version of Chakra available with Edge. We are briefly presenting some of these enhancements (more details here and here):

Chakra has a new Simple JIT compiler which performs fewer optimizations, and as a result can execute the code sooner. Profiling continues, and the engine switches to full-JIT code when this is available. Simple JIT also runs on a background thread.

Depending on the underlying hardware, Chakra can start multiple JIT threads, resulting in faster compilation. Because of that, TypeScript is now up to 30% faster.

The final GC mark pass can now be done both on the main thread and the GC thread, reducing the interruption of the main thread for the final mark pass by up to 48%.
Code inlining overhead has been reduced by using static data.
Chakra now allows cross-file script inlining.

The upcoming const in ES6 saves compilers from performing checks and see if a variable has changed. For web apps that do not use const, Chakra can identify global variables that never change in order to treat them as const, saving lookup time costs.

The JIT compiler is now better optimized for running minified code generated with UglifyJS which is used by the vast majority of top 10K websites.
JIT now optimizes the code inside a try-catch block.
Considering all these improvements and optimizations, we wonder how fast Edge is. According to Microsoft, Edge is now faster than Chrome and Firefox, as depicted in the following graphics:

Microsoft Squeezes Office Onto Android Phones

Already available on Android tablets, Microsoft's Office mobile apps finally arrive on Android smartphones.

Microsoft is finally closing a major gap in its Office mobile app portfolio.
Jared Spataro, general manager of Microsoft Office 365 marketing, announced on May 19 that the company has released preview versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Android smartphones such as Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S6. Microsoft released a limited preview of Office for Android tablets last November, before opening up the early-access program to all comers just after the new year.
"The Office for Android phone apps are modern, optimized for touch and designed for work on the go," said Spataro in a statement. First, Microsoft is requiring prospective beta testers to register with the Office for Android community on Google+. Once registered, users can click on the respective Word, Excel and PowerPoint links.
Then, they wait. "Wait for ~4 hours as Google play takes time to replicate permissions, then click above mentioned links and follow the download links to install apps using Google play store," instructs the Microsoft Office for Android Google Plus page.

"Bringing these apps to Preview first provides you with an early look at the apps, while enabling us to gather critical user feedback helping us shape and improve the app experience on a wide range of Android phones across the world," Spataro said. "The feedback we received from the Office for Android tablet Preview in January was critical to ensuring a high quality and consistent Office experience across Android tablet devices."

Microsoft Office for Android phones is separate from the Office Mobile app released in 2013. Hinting that the latter's days may be numbered, "Office Mobile app for Android phone will still be available in the app store during Preview," he said. "We will disclose more about our plans for this app later in the year when we announce general availability of the new Office for Android phone app."

As in the iOS versions of the apps, a consistent user experience that transcends device type and operating system is key to Microsoft's vision of mobile-enabled productivity.

"The Office apps combine the familiar look, feel and quality of Office with a touch-friendly experience designed for Android phones," Spataro stated. "Documents open and render beautifully, with all formatting and content in the right place." Many of Office's navigational elements and options were placed within easy reach of a user's thumb, near the bottom of the screen, he added.

Embracing Google's Android ecosystem fits with Microsoft's mobile-first product strategy.
Despite a surge in the iPhone's popularity—due in no small part to the record-breaking debut of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus—Android still dominates the smartphone scene. In February, International Data Corp. (IDC), an IT analyst group, announced that the mobile operating system had nabbed 81.5 percent of the smartphone OS market in 2014, on shipments of over 1 billion units. Apple iOS took the No. 2 spot with nearly 15 percent of the market and shipments of 192.7 million iPhones.

Microsoft Corporation Encourages Users To Follow The Rules Or Face The Consequences Like Gears of War Leakers

Microsoft encourages users to follow its code of conduct associated with their Xbox Live accounts, otherwise they will have to face the consequences

Recently a remaster of Gears of War was aired to users, well, the people who reported about this fake version of the game, and also created a video of it have been caught, and have had their accounts on Xbox “permanently disabled,” not only that but “all of their Xbox One privileges” have been blocked by Microsoft. Reports state, the users who were involved in the release of this fake action game trailer will not be able to go online with their accounts any more.

Microsoft reported to have said: "To be clear, if a console is suspended from Xbox Live for a violation of the Terms of Use, it can still be used offline. Microsoft enforcement action does not result in a console becoming unusable.”

Microsoft encourages users to follow its code of conduct associated with their Xbox Live accounts otherwise they will have to face the consequences. The leakers of the fake version of Gears of War will be able to use their consoles; but with limited functionality of using it online. This digital gift seems to be a clear message from Microsoft for those who are trying to fake things here. The users who performed this illegal act are still lucky as their accounts are just temporarily locked, though it is still surprising that Microsoft still has control on a consumer’s console, even after he has purchased the console.
