Microsoft Corporation, Intel Corporation See Great Market Potential For PC-on-a-Stick In India

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) see a bright spot in the Indian market with a new approach PC-on-a-stick, as many households in India even lack a regular personal computer (PC) and cannot afford it; a relatively cheap PC-on-a-stick could be the choice of many consumers.

The compute stick would turn any LCD or LED monitor into a full-fledged PC as well as a smart TV that can carry out the necessary functions. For this, all the monitor requires is a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port to turn the display device into a PC. When connected, it supports mouse and keyboard devices as well, even users can stream media content directly from the Internet onto their TV. Although the compute stick is a bit short on processing power at this stage in time, it is able to match performance of some tablet computers.

According to Microsoft India's director for Windows Business, Vineet Durani, a mere 10% households throughout the country have computer access which is a worry. "We can position this stick PC as a cheap alternative to PC. In those areas, chances are that people might not have PC but they certainly have a TV in their house," Mr. Durani said. Out of 11 million TVs shipped annually, nine million LEDs are equipped with an HDMI port.

Microsoft is already in talks with TV manufacturers in India and looking to make a deal to see TVs bundled with a stick computer. It is also encouraging distributors to offer this product among other traditional IT products such as mobile phones. It would certainly increase the number of households that would have computer access. Mr. Durani claimed: "TV manufacturers are eager to experiment with this product."

Intel's Compute Stick is also a product ready for launch in India. It is so small that it fits in the palm of one's hand. It features Microsoft Windows 8.1 (as it is pretty sure it won’t get the free Windows 10 upgrade), a quad-core processor, 2 GB memory, and a 32 GB storage capacity. Although it does not sound that great, the compute stick features the necessary connectivity like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB ports as well, thus creates an option for those without a PC to get work done.

Microsoft Now Allegedly Set To Release Surface Pro 4 in July: Is Apple Running Scared?

There have been so many back and forth rumors about when the Surface Pro 4 will be officially released that it’s hard to keep count. However, several sites are now claiming that it will be released in July, the same time Windows 10 will be released. Here is what Master Herald has to say.

“Now that May is almost over, it is unlikely that Microsoft would still pull off a surprise and launch the Surface Pro 4. It is thus very likely that Microsoft would be launching the latest iteration to its hybrid device in July, which happens to be the same month that the company will be launching its Window 10 desktop and mobile operating system.”

Vine Report insists that the Surface Pro 4 will have an Intel Core M Broadwell chip, ditching the original plan to ship it with the more powerful Intel Core i5 or even the Intel Core i7 processors. Several people on the internet have cast doubt about this rumor, which appears to be part of the internet echo chamber without any actual confirmation.

According to BGR, the Surface Pro 4 will get rid of the fan like the new MacBook, but they don’t think that automatically means it will pack a slower Intel Core M processor. They also believe that that the Surface Pro 4 is expected to feature a 12-inch display with 2160 x 1440 pixels of resolution, which is the same as the Surface Pro 3. However, other sources claim the Surface Pro 4 will have a 4K screen.

The Surface Pro’s main competitor with be the iPad Pro, which doesn’t have a specific release date. According to some sources, the iPad Pro will have a 13-inch screen and run a variant of Apple’s current OS X operating system. It will also have a pressure-sensitive stylus. MacRumors believes the device will be released in late 2015 and compared it to previous iPads.

“While rumors on the larger iPad are somewhat scarce, it’s believed the tablet will closely resemble the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3, offering a thin chassis and slim bezels.”

The article also notes that iPad Pro may measure 7mm and it could include several iPad Air 2 features like 2GB of RAM and Touch ID. Even though MacRumors is the best when it comes to rumor accuracy, they seem to be basing their assumptions on other reports as well.

The release of both Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 and Apple’s iPad Pro should really give the tablet industry a desperately needed kick. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 was a groundbreaking laptop/tablet hybrid and it has not only influenced Microsoft to expand on its flagship tablet, but other companies as well.

Microsoft to Clear the Windows Store Clutter

Ever go to the Windows Store looking for a particular app and find dozens of options, all of which pretty much do the exact same thing? It's a common problem for app stores, but Microsoft is now looking to remedy it for Windows users.

The tech giant on Wednesday announced a new effort aimed at eliminating app clutter and ensuring all apps are appropriately priced and clearly labeled — so you can find what you're looking for faster and easier. As part of the effort, Microsoft has introduced a stricter app certification policy for new and existing apps to help cut down on the bloat.

"These changes will help customers more rapidly find the apps they are specifically seeking," Microsoft's Bernardo Zamora wrote in a blog post. "We will identify apps that are not following the policies, informing developers of issues we locate, and removing apps that don't comply."

Zamora admitted that many apps in the Windows Store have similar icons and titles, which can be confusing to users. Other apps have icons and titles that don't even match their content. That's about to change.

Going forward, Microsoft plans to remove any apps that "can't be distinguished from other apps in the Store, have icons or titles that are too similar to other apps already in the Store, or don't properly represent the functionality of the app," Zamora wrote.

The company also plans to remove apps that are overpriced. Developers can still set their own prices, but Microsoft said that similar apps should be comparable in price.
"If an app is priced significantly higher than other apps in its category and it is determined that users might be confused and believe (incorrectly) that the higher price is warranted based on superior functionality or value, it may be removed from the Store," Zamora wrote.

Microsoft will also now require informational apps like guides, tutorials, instructional content, and reference materials to be labeled as such. This way, you won't accidentally purchase a game guide when you meant to buy the actual game.

Finally, Microsoft is also cracking down on apps that are not labeled correctly. The company said that developers sometimes use popular and irrelevant keywords to manipulate their app's placement in search results or overall ranking. From now on, apps with inaccurate titles, descriptions, and tags may get the heave-ho.

The changes come after Microsoft last year removed more than 1,500 apps from the Windows Store as part of an effort to crack down on shady, misleading apps.

Microsoft Has Hijacked Android In A Hostile Takeover

Microsoft has its own mobile operating system and devices. Thanks to a variety of legal and strategic moves, though, Microsoft also owns a sizeable chunk of its largest competitor. Microsoft already generates significant revenue from Android and it is poised to rake in the cash from Android users thanks to a newly announced partnership to pre-install Microsoft Office and Skype apps on a wide variety of Android tablets.

Microsoft revealed yesterday that it has entered a strategic agreement with 20 different Android OEMs—including Sony and LG—to install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype on their Android tablets. A new LG tablet and the Sony Xperia Z4 are slated to come with the Microsoft apps pre-installed in the next 90 days.

“Our strategic agreements with these partners demonstrate how Microsoft is leveraging the scale of the hardware ecosystem, and working with partners in new ways to deliver rich experiences to our customers,” said Microsoft’s Nick Parker in a blog post announcing the new relationships. “This is a cornerstone of our cross-platform services strategy, to bring an array of Microsoft services to every person on every device.”

It is part of Microsoft’s broader cross-platform strategy. Under Satya Nadella’s leadership Microsoft has taken a much more aggressive platform-agnostic stance rather than trying to force users to stay on Microsoft’s own operating systems and devices. Microsoft has made significant progress in providing access to its tools and services no matter what platform or device a customer chooses. More importantly, it has focused on ensuring a consistent and seamless experience which makes it more likely customers will choose to use those familiar Microsoft apps no matter what device they’re on.

Microsoft offers the same—or sometimes better—apps on iOS than it does on Android, or even on its own Windows Phone mobile devices sometimes. However, iOS is a closed ecosystem controlled by Apple. Apple owns the operating system. Apple manufactures the hardware. Apple controls access to the App Store. Microsoft is doing an excellent job of navigating iOS but there’s no mistaking that Microsoft is playing in Apple’s world.

Android is a different story. While Android was developed by and is closely tied to Google it is an open source operating system. Google doesn’t “own” it per se, and Google makes zero dollars of revenue from licensing the Android OS itself. Microsoft on the other hand generates about $2 billion a year in revenue from Android manufacturers in agreements over licensing Microsoft patents that are infringed by the Android OS.

Because Google does not own the platform and has no direct control over the manufacturers who produce Android smartphones and tablets, Microsoft is free to negotiate arrangements like this one—strategic alliances that enable Microsoft to more or less hijack Android from the inside. Android users generally default to using Google productivity apps and services because they’re pre-installed on the Android devices and tied to the Google account the user logs into the mobile device with. It’s just easier to use the apps that are already there rather than seeking out and installing something else.

By making the Microsoft apps available by default on those same devices Microsoft is reducing the friction for users. With the Microsoft apps pre-installed they become the path of least resistance. They offer a consistent, familiar experience and integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Office applications on other devices. Storing files in OneDrive makes them instantly accessible using those same Office applications on other platforms and the user doesn’t need to re-learn anything or figure out how to convert files.

Microsoft: Edge Performs Better than Chrome and Firefox

This article outlines some of the performance optimizations done for the Chakra engine and the Octane and Jet Stream benchmark results for Edge, Chrome and Firefox.

As detailed in A Developer’s View on Microsoft Edge, the Redmond browser maker has changed their attitude towards web technologies, web standards and compliance with other browsers. Not only they discarded some old IE components and decided to implement HTML, JavaScript and CSS standards to the letter with the new rendering engine, but they started to address an issue that was long due: performance.

The main performance bottlenecks in IE were related to processing JavaScript, Microsoft fixing some of these in the new version of Chakra available with Edge. We are briefly presenting some of these enhancements (more details here and here):

Chakra has a new Simple JIT compiler which performs fewer optimizations, and as a result can execute the code sooner. Profiling continues, and the engine switches to full-JIT code when this is available. Simple JIT also runs on a background thread.

Depending on the underlying hardware, Chakra can start multiple JIT threads, resulting in faster compilation. Because of that, TypeScript is now up to 30% faster.

The final GC mark pass can now be done both on the main thread and the GC thread, reducing the interruption of the main thread for the final mark pass by up to 48%.
Code inlining overhead has been reduced by using static data.
Chakra now allows cross-file script inlining.

The upcoming const in ES6 saves compilers from performing checks and see if a variable has changed. For web apps that do not use const, Chakra can identify global variables that never change in order to treat them as const, saving lookup time costs.

The JIT compiler is now better optimized for running minified code generated with UglifyJS which is used by the vast majority of top 10K websites.
JIT now optimizes the code inside a try-catch block.
Considering all these improvements and optimizations, we wonder how fast Edge is. According to Microsoft, Edge is now faster than Chrome and Firefox, as depicted in the following graphics:

Why Microsoft Corporation DirectX 12 Might Even The Console War Against Sony Corp (ADR)

Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) might have admitted defeat on the smartphone front, with the company recently announcing plans to wind down operations in order to focus on their other portfolios, which experience a greater return on investment. Sony is the undisputed king when it comes to gaming consoles, with its main competitors being Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox and PC.

Microsoft's aim to overtake Sony’s leading gaming console, the PlayStation 4, might well be on the cards following their unveiling of the DirectX 12, the new graphics stack which enhances performance on existing hardware, together with being compatible on all Microsoft platforms.

The Xbox One has received widespread criticism when tested in comparison with the Sony Playstation 4, the main cause of concern being its lack of game performance. However, this criticism has turned on its head after the announcement of DirectX 12, since this will see games for the PC, Xbox One, and even Windows Phone double in graphics performance.

DirectX 12 will unleash the true power of the Xbox One, having previously been held back by its age old API’s understanding in how to use multiple cores and threads simultaneously. DirectX 12 is all set to redefine gaming, which indicates good news for PC and Xbox One gamers.

Microsoft is expected to release DirectX 12 along with the much awaited arrival of Windows 10. This technological advancement is bound to attract gaming developers and might just result in them losing preference for Sony’s top of the line gaming console. Microsoft will now be able to concentrate games on their native console and PCs, rather than just catering to the PlayStation 4.

Many people still believe DirectX 12 will still not result in the Xbox One being placed on par with the PS4, since they claim Sony’s hardware is still better off than its competitors’.

Windows 10 to come in Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise, Education editions

Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 10 in the next couple of months in around 190 countries in 111 languages, although no fixed date has been announced yet. There will be various editions of Windows 10 according to the use cases. The editions announced include Windows 10 Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise, Education. Let us take a look at each of these editions.

Windows 10 Home edition will be the consumer facing edition which will be seen on most desktop PCs, laptops and 2-in-1s. The Home edition will support voice-assistant Cortana, Windows Edge web browser as well as Windows Hello face recognition, iris scanner and fingerprint login for various Windows apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video.

For the business users, you have the Windows 10 Pro edition, which has all the features of the Home edition plus additional features such as device management, security features, cloud features ideal for smaller businesses. For medium and large size organisations there is Windows 10 Enterprise edition which builds up upon the Windows 10 Pro. Apart from providing security features, Windows 10 Enterprise also has a broad range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management.

On the mobile front, you get Windows 10 Mobile edition which is the new name for Windows Phone OS and the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise edition. As the name implies, Windows 10 Mobile is meant for use on mobile phones, tablets and other touch-centric devices. It will support Windows Universal apps which are there on Windows 10 Home edition along with a touch-optimised version of Office. Windows 10 Mobile will also offer Continuum for phone which will let users use multiple devices seamlessly. Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is the mobile arm of the Windows 10 Enterprise edition. Just like the desktop version, the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will also incorporate the latest security and innovation features on the mobile devices.

Windows 10 Education is a new edition which builds upon Windows 10 Enterprise and is designed for use in schools among staff, administrators, teachers and students. “This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing, and there will be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education,” mentions the Windows Blog.

“Because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses,” said Tony Prophet on the Windows Blog.

Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro will be available as a free upgrade, for the first year, for existing genuine users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. There are no pricing plans announced for use after one year.

Microsoft: Cortana will appear just in 'select markets' at Windows 10 launch

Microsoft may have formally announced the various versions of Windows 10, tailored for consumers, business and mobile. But buried in the fine print is an important detail: One of the key features, Cortana, won’t be immediately available everywhere Windows 10 is sold.

Microsoft outlined the six major versions of Windows 10 in a blog post on Tuesday. They'll include Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 Mobile, plus the enterprise versions: Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise and Windows 10 Education.

Under Windows 10 Home, the very first “new innovation” that Microsoft corporate vice president Tony Prophet listed was the Cortana digital assistant, along with the Edge browser and universal apps. Windows 10 Pro will also incorporate Cortana, as will Windows 10 Mobile, where the digital assistant first launched as a feature of Windows Phone.

But buried at the bottom of the blog post is a major caveat: “Cortana will be available on Windows 10 at launch in select markets.”

What this means: Windows 10 will launch in 190 countries and 111 languages, but it's one thing to translate dialog boxes and another thing to understand spoken language on the fly, as Cortana must. When the Windows Phone 8.1 Update launched last year, Cortana worked in Australia, Canada (English), France, Germany, India (English), Italy, and Spain, as well as the United States. Microsoft said that it was bringing the technology to China and the U.K. as well. But that list still excludes a number of major markets—Brazil, Russia, and Japan, to name just a few. Curtains be apparently gone to need some time to catch up.

Many questions for overseas users

Microsoft’s Cortana rollout within the United States began with Windows Phone, then moved to Windows 10 phones and PCs. Over time, those platforms have begun to talk to one another. It’s not clear whether those emerging regions will endure the same staggered rollout, or receive a holistic experience tying together Windows 10 Home, Business, and Mobile from day one. The odds seem to lean toward a staggered rollout, though.

Furthermore, while Cortana works well on Windows Phone, it’s still not the quick, efficient digital assistant I expect in the desktop version of Windows 10.

To be fair, Microsoft isn't alone in delaying spoken language support for specific regions. Wes Miller, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, noted that Apple's Siri supported English in iOS 5.0, in 2011, while support for Brazil, Russia, and Sweden, among others arrived just this year in iOS 8.3.

"Teaching a digital system a new language is incredibly complicated," Miller said. For overseas users where Cortana isn't supported, Microsoft will simply sell Windows 10 on its other features, such as the Edge browser, he said.

For now, Microsoft’s left customers with a number of questions. A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment further, noting that Microsoft would soon provide more details around Cortana and the features of each version of Windows 10.

Microsoft muscle against Apple agility in the battle of the tablets

The tablet market is getting pretty crowded but Microsoft feels it has something different to offer with the Surface 3, a new tablet that it claims has struck the perfect balance between performance and value.

In its sights is the iPad Air 2, Apple’s thin and light tablet that the tech firm also pitches as capable of handling almost anything.
Price-wise, they come in neck and neck, at €609 for the 64GB version of both tablets, before you start getting into extras such as smart covers and pens.
Both tablets offer a mobile-enabled version, though Apple has a built-in Sim that you can use to sign up for a limited number of mobile data tariffs. Apple also brings increased security with its fingerprint reader.
So how does the Surface 3 stack up against the competition? We pitched them head to head to find out.
Looks
One of the main selling points of the iPad Air 2 is its sleek frame. It’s thin, at 6.1mm, and weighs in at 437g. The Surface 3, while not weighty by any stretch of the imagination, is bigger and heavier, weighing 622g. That’s partly due to the larger screen: it is 10.8 inches, compared with the iPad Air’s 9.7in display .
It is still the thinnest and lightest Surface Microsoft has made to date, which goes in its favour. It also has a kickstand built into the device, which is handy for when you are using it with the keyboard cover or just want to prop it up to watch a movie.
There’s also a choice of colours with the iPad – silver, gold and space grey – which you don’t get with the Surface 3. It’s grey or nothing there, we’re afraid.
There’s also more of a bezel on the Surface, although the iPad isn’t the smallest on that front either. But overall the Air looks slick.
Winner
The Surface 3 has some great features, but when it comes to looks and portability, the iPad Air 2 edges it in our opinion.
Display
There’s a lot said about the Retina display on the iPad Air 2, and it’s deserved praise. The 9.7in display is pin sharp, at 264 pixels per inch. Colours are vibrant and text is crisp, even when you zoom in close. You get some glare off the screen when you go to extreme viewing angles, but not so much as to render it unusable – plus you probably won’t be trying to view the screen at those angles too often anyway.
The Surface 3 comes with a 10.8in display, and that extra room can be felt when you’re watching videos or typing a document. Its resolution clocks in at 1920 x 1080, compared with the iPad’s 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. Overall, it looks good, and like the Air 2, it has great viewing angles.
Winner
We liked the extra space the Surface gave us, but numbers aside, it’s hard to beat the iPad’s display.
Capacity
When it comes to capacity, it’s not just about the figures. The iPad Air comes in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB, whereas the Surface 3 is only available in 64GB and 128GB versions.
However, the operating system will take up a bit of space, which is worth factoring into your decision. Out of a 128GB iPad Air 2, we found there was a little over 113GB of free space available to us. The 128GB Surface, meanwhile, shows 110GB of free space, which means the iPad Air gives a little more to users.
However, there are two things you should take into account. First, the Surface 3 includes a full-size USB port. That means you can expand the storage cheaply and easily with either a USB key or an external hard drive.
Second, it also allows you to add a micro SD card to expand storage. The slot is hidden away under the kickstand.
Those are two points in its favour. The only option for expanding your storage space with the iPad is to take up cloud services, which aren’t an option if you move out of internet range.
Winner
The Surface 3 offers more options for less ; a micro SD card is far cheaper than choosing the higher capacity iPad to start with.
Camera
The camera on a tablet isn’t as big a consideration for most people as it would be on a smartphone – unless you’re that person holding their iPad up at a gig. But you still want something half decent, whether it’s for the odd snap here and there or for video-conferencing.
The Surface comes with an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera. That covers things off nicely, and it matches what the iPad offers and then some.
The iPad Air’s front-facing camera clocks in at 1.2 megapixels, although Apple has designated it as an iSight camera.
Although Microsoft’s tablet took clearer shots in our tests – the iPad was a little soft even in good lighting conditions – Apple’s tablet offered more options, such as time lapse and slow motion, than the Surface. Neither tablet has a flash built in, so low light shots are hit and miss.
Winner
The iPad just wins out here.
Software
The iPad Air, like all the others before it, runs iOS. That’s Apple’s mobile software, if you weren’t aware, so anything extra you want to install on it has to come from the App Store. That means it’s all vetted by Apple, which lessens the likelihood of malicious software slipping through, but it also limits you to what Apple says is acceptable to install on your machine. Despite a few hiccups, iOS 8 has its fans because it is relatively easy to get started with.
Previous Surface tablets were divided into the Pro version, which ran full Windows, and those that ran RT, Microsoft’s version of Windows 8 for mobile devices with ARM processors. That distinction has now gone, and the Surface 3 runs Windows 8.1, the full desktop software that you get with your laptop.
You can install regular software on the tablet or go to the Windows Store for apps. Obviously you aren’t going to be installing heavy duty software, but it will run most productivity software, including Microsoft Office, without suffering from slowdowns. You can also download a few apps for Twitter, Facebook and photo editing. The best thing about it is that the tablet will be compatible with Windows 10 when the new operating system is released later this year, so you can upgrade for free.
Winner
While Windows 8.1 hasn’t exactly inspired people, the Surface 3 still wins this round for its flexibility.
Power
Both devices claim to have the same battery life at 10 hours apiece. Obviously, what you do with it will affect how much of that 10 hours you get, but on the whole, both batteries performed well.
However, when it comes to charging, the Surface 3 has the edge. That’s mainly because you can charge it off a micro USB, so there are no proprietary cables to worry about. Chances are if you forget your cable, you’ll be able to find one around the office. The iPad Air 2 has Apple’s lightning connection, so if you are an iPhone 5 or later user, you’re sorted. But the micro USB cable might be a little easier to lay your hands on in a rush – and cheaper to replace if something happens to it.
Winner
The Surface 3 is a little more convenient than the iPad Air 2, mainly down to the ease at which you could lay your hands on a cable in an emergency.
So there you have it. Ultimately though, it will come down to personal preference, and what you want to use the tablet for: work, play or a healthy mix of both.

Microsoft Corporation’s Upcoming Halo 5: Guardians Raises Expectations

Microsoft Corporation’s Upcoming Halo 5: Guardians Raises Expectations
Microsoft expects the upcoming Halo 5: Guardians to have a much better and bug-free launch unlike the previous Halo: The Master Chief Collection on the Xbox One

Halo: The Master Chief Collection was the franchise’s first entry on Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One. While it was great to play through the franchise's previous titles, Halo: MCC did not have such a smooth launch. Gamers were left disappointed with bugs especially related to the online multiplayer game.

According to Cinema Blend, Microsoft's upcoming Halo 5: Guardians is expected to have a much better and bug-free launch. While speaking to Xbox Achievements, Halo’s Franchise Development Director, Frank O’Connor stated, “Halo: The Master Chief Collection is definitely a black eye for us. We’re not going to rest on our laurels or hide from the mistakes we made.

However, I will say that the nature of The Master Chief Collection - you’ve got five different game engines, you’ve got five different studios working on it, you’ve got 343 working on putting it all together - the footprint and complexity was outrageous.”

How will Halo 5: Guardians be different from The Master Chief Collection? O’Connor adds, “Halo 5 is being made by a completely different team. It’s a singular product. It was built from the ground up for this new technology, rather than being sort of dragged, kicking and screaming from 2001 and forced and shoehorned into a 2014 console. So the problem spaces are still very challenging but they’re radically different. I think the beta is already a decent first step, in a retail environment, showing that we don’t have the same problems.”

Halo: MCC’s multiplayer bugs were attempted to be fixed by various patches but they have not been completely eliminated. Microsoft may have run out of bug spray for Halo:MCC, but fortunately it has enough to spray on Halo 5: Guardians before it releases on October 27, 2015.

Thankfully, a multiplayer beta for Halo 5: Guardians between December and January by 343 Industries has given them enough information, since a second beta is not on the agenda yet. Halo is Microsoft’s biggest cash cow and it has perhaps kept the Xbox brand alive, since the first Xbox released over a decade ago.

It is understandable that to take two generations worth of games and adapt it to the latest console may not be an easy task. However, there should still not be any excuse for mistakes on Halo: MCC. At least, Microsoft has admitted that it was a ‘black eye’ for them and they expect Halo 5: Guardians to do a lot better.

According to a report by Gamespot, Microsoft plans to kick off the first proper new Halo title on the Xbox One, by releasing a limited edition, Halo 5-themed console. 343 Industries Studio Head, Josh Holmes, revealed on popular social media platform Twitter, that a Halo 5 edition of the Xbox One is in the process.

Microsoft introduces Azure DNS in public preview, expanding its cloud capabilities

The big keynote at Microsoft’s enterprise-oriented Ignite conference in Chicago this week happened yesterday, but that isn’t stopping Microsoft from making announcements outside the keynote. Today, Microsoft unveiled new cloud-networking capabilities, including a new service for domain hosting called Azure DNS.

“Azure DNS is a new service to host DNS domains and provides name resolution using Microsoft’s global infrastructure,” Yousef Khalidi, an engineer working on networking for Microsoft’s Azure public cloud, wrote in a blog post today.

“By hosting your domains in Azure, you can manage your DNS records using the same credentials, APIs, tools and billing as your other Azure services. Azure DNS uses anycast networking, so that each DNS query is answered by the closest available DNS server. Azure DNS is also backed by a global footprint of DNS origin servers, providing you robust performance and fast query times.”

The feature is available today in public preview, with a 50 percent discount, Khalidi wrote. The first 25 hosted DNS zones cost 25 cents per zone per month, and the first billion DNS queries cost 20 cents per million.

The rollout comes almost five years after market-leading public cloud Amazon Web Services announced Route 53, its domain name system (DNS) service. Google announced its DNS service, Cloud DNS, in March 2014. Google and Amazon’s services use anycast networking, just like the new Azure service.

The announcement went largely unnoticed today after being announced in a talk, but it did elicit some positive response on Twitter:

Windows 10 release will be staggered, Microsoft reveals

The release schedule for Microsoft’s next flagship operating system was characterized as a wave that starts in the summer and proceeds from there.

SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft is building Windows 10 with the aim that the software will work well on devices ranging from smartphones to industrial equipment to desktop personal computers.

The operating system won’t make its way to all of them at once when it is released later this year, however.

Joe Belfiore, a vice president with Microsoft’s operating systems group, on Wednesday added a bit of detail to the company’s timeline for the upcoming version of its flagship product.

He didn’t specify a release date — Microsoft officials have only said Windows 10 is due this summer — but did clarify that the software is likely headed for its first release with a consumer-focused PC version. Some business-focused features, as well as versions for smartphones, Xboxes and other devices, may come at a later date.

“It’s a launch wave that starts in the summer with the PC and fills out over time as more devices come online,” Belfiore told reporters at an event on the sidelines of Microsoft’s Build developer conference here. “There are some features that we’ve talked about that won’t be there on launch date.”

There are a few reasons for the staggered model, Belfiore said.

Development for PCs got a head start. The desktop version of Microsoft’s most recent major Windows update, Windows 8.1, was released nine months before its smartphone-tailored cousin. Mobile operating systems also have to go through certification with wireless carriers.

Belfiore also said some features of Windows 10, including some tools for developers and information-technology managers at businesses, would come after the first release.

“Enterprises want that,” said Rob Sanfilippo, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland firm that advises businesses on use of Microsoft products.

“More baking time” in the hands of consumer users means less chance early bugs make it into versions they buy for employees, he said.

Preview versions of still-in-development Windows 10 have been available for download since October, with the company periodically releasing new builds with added features.

Executives have said Windows 10, delivered as it will be via a Web download rather than the boxed CD case of old, will allow for regular updates and improvements.

Microsoft has said it will offer free upgrades to the vast majority of individual Windows for the first year after the software’s release, and will keep those users current with the latest version of the software for the lifetime of the device.

How Microsoft is courting developers to grow its cloud

Microsoft is hoping to add more customers to its Azure cloud by appealing to coders who want flexibility.

Forget about the old Microsoft. We’re in the new Microsoft-era.

At least, that was the theme at the tech giant’s annual Build conference for developers on Wednesday. Whereas it once locked up its prized products—like the Windows operating system and the framework used by outside developers to build their own software—Microsoft is now bragging about how many of its products can now be used on other companies’ platforms.

Are you a business whose developers are making applications for Apple’s iOS and Android? Now you can easily tweak them for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 10 operating system.

Do you want to tap into Microsoft’s new data-crunching services but want to keep some of that information in your own data centers? Well, Microsoft’s new Azure SQL Data Warehouse—which is essentially a giant virtual dumping ground for data from which companies can then analyze—might be what you’re looking for.

Microsoft  MSFT -0.19%  is promising technology and tools that are free from vendor lock-in—the dreaded term that strikes fear in the heart of executives who worry that they won’t be able to use alternative products. In doing so, Microsoft is trying to stand out from cloud computing rivals like Amazon Web Services.

During the company’s keynote presentation, Scott Guthrie, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, showed a slide to the crowd that compared the differences between Microsoft’s new data warehouse and Amazon’s, which it introduced over two years ago. Guthrie enthused about Microsoft’s version and its ability to work on both its cloud and a company’s own data centers, a slap at Amazon’s competing service that only works on Amazon’s cloud.

This sales pitch about technology that doesn’t have to run directly on Microsoft-controlled data centers is something the company has been preaching for the past year under CEO Satya Nadella. It’s no surprise that Microsoft continued to talk it up at a conference for developers.

These days, developers prefer to build software —like what’s used by ride-sharing startup Uber— in various programming languages, tools, and infrastructure. That software can live on a company’s own data centers or the data centers of a cloud service provider.

Microsoft has realized that to attract more business to its cloud, it needs to court coders who are typically the ones in a company trying out the latest new software and database technology. These developers hate the idea of being forced to use only one tool.

By appealing to coders who want flexibility, Microsoft is hoping to gain influence within companies that they can then convince to use its cloud—which Microsoft is betting will offset the shrinking revenue of Windows, its once reliable desktop software cash cow of that is now in decline.

If you needed more proof, note that Microsoft trotted out Ben Golub, the CEO of the buzzy enterprise startup Docker, on stage during the keynote. The point: To talk about how much Microsoft and Docker have been working together over the past months to make sure Docker’s container technology—which allows for faster software development and more efficient management—can run on Microsoft’s cloud as well as Windows.

Docker’s container technology has been a hit with developers, and by appearing cozy with a developer darling like Docker, Microsoft seems to be hoping it can co-opt some of the startup’s massive user base and perhaps win over more customers.

And speaking of Microsoft’s cloud, news leaked out Wednesday during the company’s developer conference that Salesforce has hired an investment bank to handle an acquisition offer from an unidentified company. Microsoft is an obvious possibility. Although Salesforce doesn’t sell the same type of networking, storage and computing capabilities as Amazon and Microsoft, it does sell a lot of software used by sales teams via its own cloud data centers.

If the speculation is correct, Microsoft could adopt Salesforce’s family of cloud software and use it to significantly beef up its cloud business as it battles with Amazon  AMZN 0.01%  and Google  GOOG -0.83%  for supremacy as the leader in cloud computing.

With the possible acquisition of Salesforce  CRM 12.41% , it does indeed feel like the days of Microsoft being resisting change may be over. We’ll just have to wait and see if the company is changing too fast for its own good.
