Microsoft Corporation Invites Users to Vote for Games

Users have 5 options, i.e. Chess, Bubble, Casino, Hearts, Word to choose from. The organization is also set to release a preview program for the users to experience the games

Microsoft Corporation is roping users in to vote for the next game in Windows 10, in order to receive feedback so it may improve game features in future. Voting is open until December 17, 2015. Users can vote by clicking here. Users have five options to choose from, i.e. Chess, Bubble, Casino, Hearts, and Word. Microsoft's Casual Games division is responsible to roll out the games for casual players.

For this purpose, the Windows maker has created a website where players can cast their vote, share views regarding upcoming features and current games, and read about the development of casual and existing games. Furthermore, they can join Microsoft Casual Games Inner Circle program and get early access of builds as well as behind-the-scene information. They can also choose the upcoming features for development, and work directly with the game development team.

The organization is also likely to release a preview program for the users to experience the game’s early version. In a blog post, it shared the excitement to collaborate with fans for product and development decisions. Microsoft has been developing casual games for over 25 years. It started this journey with Solitaire in Windows 3.0. The design director, Kevin Lambert and the lead producer, Derek Dutilly showed their enthusiasm for empowering the corporation's fans to make choice of upcoming casual games for next year.

Microsoft To Forcefully Upgrade Windows 7, 8.1 Users To Windows 10 Through Automatic Updates

Windows 7 and 8 users will be prompted to upgrade to Windows 10 for free very soon

Microsoft To Forcefully Upgrade Windows 7, 8.1 Users To Windows 10 Through Automatic Updates

Windows 10 currently runs on more than 110 million computer systems all over the globe.
Now Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) plans to further accelerate its strategy to get   Windows 10 on more and more devices by the turn of the year, focusing especially on older machines that run Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Microsoft has already offered a free upgrade to Windows 10, and this latest aggressive
strategy is a part of Microsoft’s plan to significantly increase the numbers.
Microsoft stated that from early next year, it planned to provide a ‘recommended update’, including an upgrade to Windows 10 in its Windows Update system. This means that on
systems with settings that allow automatic Windows Updates downloads,
Windows 10 will be automatically downloaded and updated. On other systems,
when a user turns on his computer, he will find an update to Windows 10 that needs approval.
Microsoft’s head of Windows and devices, Terry Myerson, said this update dialog will only be presented once to users, and Windows 10 will download and update the
Windows depending on the settings. He commented on pirated Windows copies and their attempts to upgrade to Windows 10 and said that if you tried to upgrade on a pirated
Windows, it says that the update is available only on genuine Windows.
He also acknowledges attempts to get around this setting, and he commended those
users who have purchased genuine licenses at the Windows Store for Windows 10.
Microsoft has stated that it aims to reach 1 billion systems that will run Windows 10 in the next couple of years, and this latest strategy will help it to reach this impressive milestone. Microsoft also aims to make the upgrade to Windows 10 easier for users who run Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, as users will appreciate efforts to simplify the process. As long as the update isn’t forced on the users with repeated dialogs, it will be appreciated.

Microsoft Corporation Adds “Office Online” Extension To Chrome, Announces Skype Updates

Microsoft has introduced a number of new features, including cross-app integration for Skype and a new Chrome extension for Office Online

Microsoft Corporation Adds “Office Online” Extension To Chrome, Announces Skype Updates

Microsoft has announced on its Office blogs that, among other new features,
the company will finally be launching a Chrome browser extension for Office Online.
The company is committed to improving the experience provided to its customers on
Mac, Office Online, Windows,Android and iOS. Users can get get the Office Online Chrome extension to freely open Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Sway, OneNote and
OneDrive documents from the Chrome browser.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has also promised to regularly incorporate customer feedback in its updates for MS Office. In the Office blog post, authored by
Office Corporate VP Kirk Koenigsbauer, Microsoft announced the introduction of an improved Navigation pane which will facilitate scrolling through extensive documents
on the online version of Word. Excel Online now sports better formatting options, while PowerPoint Online now performs better.
Office’s Android apps feature considerable improvements, with the Office apps’
“footprint” reduced by as much as 40%. Microsoft has promised to introduce more reductions in the footprint, while the process of signing onto the Microsoft service has
been streamlined as well. The Office apps are also compatible with Android for Work
and Android M now. Office 365 subscribers can take advantage of PowerPoint’s
Presenter View on the platform, allowing users to see speaker notes on a presentation
on an Android device.
Office’s Mac updates see improved Visual Basic Editor features based on customer feedback. From Project Viewer, users can Add Modules; A Dialog can be used to add Library References , while debugging can be carried out using shortcut keys.
Visual basic carries two new commands in the form of AppleScriptTask and GrantAccessToMultipleFiles, and also has “a new conditional,
MAC_OFFICE_VERSION.”
Microsoft has also provided better integration for Skype using Office Online,
which will be available globally to customers with a Microsoft account in November.
Skype provides video and audio integration on the online versions of Excel, PowerPoint, Word and OneNote. Outlook.com also gets the upgrade which allows users to chat up Skype contacts directly from the apps. Skype hopes to provide better integration and collaboration by allowing users to co-author documents. The IM history is linked to the relevant document, which is a helpful feature. Microsoft plans to bring Skype’s in-app integration features on the desktop version of Office 2016 as well.
Microsoft will roll out the features over the coming months and encourages feedback withOffice UserVoice. Office.com/2016 contains all the information about the new
Microsoft productivity suite. The latest additions are interesting, but are not necessarily things that were needed as such. Given the speed of computers these days, switching from one app to another is not as difficult or time-consuming as it used to be, and some users (like myself) would prefer to use distinctly separate applications for distinctly separate functions. The ability to place a call from Word is nice, but one can just as
easily open up the Skype application on the side and continue the conversation while working on a Word document in another window.
That said, there could be some potential time-saving uses for the in-app integrations. Microsoft’s Office Online offering has certainly been given a boost with the latest
features, while the introduction of an extension for Chrome is particularly interesting. It goes show how Microsoft is acknowledging Chrome’s popularity and how the company
is willing to restrict Office Online’s presence to just its Edge browser and the
now-defunct Internet Explorer browser.
For Microsoft, it represents another improvement for Skype this month after the
company earlier launched an upgraded Skype for Windowswith a built-in translator, released an iOS version of Skype for Business and more recently introduced video messages with filters for its Skype apps. With Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)
beefing up its Google Docs offering, Microsoft needed something stronger to
fight back and it appears that Office Online has enough to keep customers hooked
on to the iOS, while the Chrome extension allows Microsoft to add more customers
to its Office Online offering.

Microsoft Officially Unveils Its Arrow Launcher For Android

There are a number of ways to customize an Android smartphone, but one of the more unexpected tools to emerge earlier this year was Arrow, an Android launcher application designed by Microsoft. This summer, an unfinished version of the launcher was discovered by way of a Google+ group for beta testers. But, today, the app has gone live on the Google Play store for all to try.
While it may seem surprising to see Microsoft building a tool that lets you customize the way you use your Android smartphone, it’s reflective of the company’s new strategy to embrace cross-platform development instead of trying to lock everyone into Microsoft’s own software and services. You can see this with the release of its flagship Office application for competing platforms like iOS and Android, for example, as well as with its virtual assistant app Cortana.
With Arrow, however, the idea is to offer a different interface for Android that makes it easier and quicker to access your most frequently used apps, as well as message friends, take notes, or access your favorite apps and settings.
The launcher has a bit of an iOS 9 feel, at times, though without being a direct clone of the iOS interface.
It somewhat mimics Apple’s recent Spotlight search update which now offers suggested apps and contacts when you swipe right on the iOS homescreen. While Apple’s “Siri Suggestions” are based on more than recency – iOS also considers how you use your phone or what apps you launch at different times of day  – Arrow’s “Recent” screen offers a similar ability to access apps, files, photos, or contacts you need quickly. That is, things you want to get to having to swipe through screens or dig around in apps.
In addition, Arrow organizes your applications based on your usage, which means that those you launch the most will appear at the top of the list.

You can also customize a dock that you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access – yes, a lot like iOS’s Control Center, right down to the semi-transparent interface. Here, you can access favorite apps or commonly-used settings, like airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a flashlight and more – Settings you would find in Control Center, too.
Another feature lets you quickly find people, then message, email, or call them with a swipe, while another lets you create notes and reminders.
Similar to some other Android launchers, you can use Arrow to re-arrange pages, set pages as your homescreen, organize and use widgets, theme your icons, and more. The only notable Microsoft integration (for now, at least) is the addition of wallpapers from Bing.
While some of Arrow’s interface is reminiscent of iOS, the larger strategy here could be more similar to Yahoo’s Aviate – an Android launcher Yahoo bought to get it a position in the mobile ecosystem where it doesn’t have its own platform, only software applications. Microsoft is in a similar boat. Though it does have Windows Phone, that OS and related devices only represents a tiny percentage of the overall smartphone market. That’s why Microsoft has embraced cross-platform development, and why it’s experimenting with customizations like this with Arrow.
If Arrow established traction, Microsoft could take advantage of the app to push or recommend its own apps and services like Office, OneDrive, Outlook, Bing and more to end users.
To be clear, Arrow is a Microsoft Garage project for the time being. That’s the internal R&D group that rolls out experiments to see which may have staying power or be worthy of further development. It’s not even the first Android app to emerge from this idea tank – previous Garage efforts have included an Android lock screen called Next and an Android Wear search assistant Torque, for example.
Arrow, in fact, was built by the same team behind Next and is now available in English and Chinese. The app is a free download from Google Play.

Microsoft pledges to clean up its Windows app store

The Windows Store has been slammed for its array of cluttered, confusing and garbage apps. Now, Microsoft wants to clean up its act.

Bernardo Zamora, director of Microsoft's Windows Apps and Store, announced in a blog post Wednesday a set of new policy guidelines for Windows app developers, all designed to rid the store of inappropriate, aka garbage, apps.

Introduced in 2012 with the debut of Windows 8, the Windows Store offers touch-screen apps designed to run on PCs and tablets. But in its race to fill the store with a host of apps, Microsoft has allowed too many similar and junky ones to fill its virtual shelves. The problem here is that the company's app policies have been lenient, leading to too many apps that leave consumers with a bad taste while shopping for software. Due out this summer, Windows 10 is Microsoft's shot to redeem itself following the poor reception to Windows 8. And one part of that redemption will be an attempt to overhaul the Windows Store.

Windows 10 is also Microsoft's effort to offer a more unified experience across all devices -- PCs, laptops, tablets and phones. Toward that end, the company is combining its Windows Store and Windows Phone store into one single shopping center. Therefore, cleaning out the dreck will be even more vital as all Windows 10 owners look to it as a one-stop shop.

In his blog post, Zamora outlined four ways in which Microsoft will attempt to improve its app store via tighter developer guidelines.

One way is to get rid of app clutter. Too many apps with similar titles and icons can confuse customers, according to Zamora, especially when those tiles and icons don't properly represent the app itself. As such, apps that seem too similar to other apps, have similar titles and icons, or use icons and titles that don't match the app content could be kicked out of the store.

Microsoft may also jettison apps that don't offer unique content or value. As one example cited by Zamora, the company may get rid of some "flashlight" apps if it finds too many with a similar functionality.

Another goal is to make sure each app is priced right. Though developers set the price for their apps, Microsoft wants to ensure that customers pay a fair amount. If Microsoft finds an app priced significantly higher than similar ones in the same category, that app may be given the heave-ho.

Microsoft also wants developers to distinguish informational apps, such as guides and tutorials, from functional apps, such as games and productivity software. The aim here is to ensure that customers aren't fooled into buying an informational app when they actually want a productivity app.

"In order to make it clear to users what they are buying, informational apps that are not easily identifiable as reference apps, must distinguish themselves by prominently displaying a text or banner labeling it as such," Zamora said. "If an informational app violates this policy, it may be removed from the Store."

One final goal is to ensure that an app's title and keywords are relevant to its content. The title and description cannot say that the app is similar to or better than other apps unless they're comparable. Further, developers can't use irrelevant keywords to try to bump up an app's rank in the search results and must restrict themselves to no more than eight keywords. Again, if developers violate this policy, their app could be booted from the store.

Microsoft offers a webpage with advice on how to describe your app and another page outlining its its Windows Store policies.

With the impending release of Windows 10, the policy changes are a step forward. But the store suffers from other problems. Certain apps have been faulted for infringing on copyright. For example, you can find games labeled Super Mario, a popular Nintendo series. But some of those games are made by third-party developers and not by Nintendo. Other apps rip off the names and content from such programs as Netflix and Facebook Messenger.

Such apps not only confuse consumers but dissuade developers from designing apps for Windows. And Microsoft needs good developers to create quality apps if it expects consumers to gravitate to the store.

Microsoft may also need to take a lesson from Apple, which follows a strict set of guidelines before it will certify an app for its App Store. Maybe it's time for Microsoft to just say no to certain apps before consumers ever see them.

Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrades to suppress PC sales

Windows 10 won't give PC sales a fillip, because punters don't think an upgrade is enough reason to buy a new computer.

So says abacus-wielding firm IDC, whose new Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker emerged today and predicted “ PC shipments are expected to fall by -6.2% in 2015.”

“Windows 10 should be a significant contributor to the PC market,” the firm writes, because it offers “an upgrade path from Windows 7 for commercial users and a range of features boosting convenience and integrating the user experience across platforms.”

Microsoft's free upgrade plans, however, mean PC sales won't rise on the back of the operating system's release. Consumers will take the free upgrade and instead “prioritize spending on phones, tablets, and wearable devices like the Apple Watch during the holiday season.”

Business, as ever, will wait and do some testing before deploying the new version of Windows.

That all adds up to another poor year for PC sales, and flat sales into the future. Here's the tale of the tape:

PC Shipments by Product Category and Region (Shipments in millions)

Product Category

Table Note:  Mature Markets include U.S., Western Europe, Japan, and Canada. Emerging Markets includes Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Middle East, and Africa (MEA).

The strengthening US dollar isn't helping matters either, the analyst firm says, because it decreases buying power in plenty of other nations.

There's a ray of sunshine coming in 2016, when IDC predicts PC sales will decline by just 0.2 per cent. There may even be a little growth after that, with 2019 sales tipped to represent be 0.4 per cent compound annual growth. Smartphones, by contrast, are tipped to enjoy a five-year compound annual growth rate of 8.5 per cent. Tablet sales, the firm said yesterday, are growing at about 2.1 per cent a year with cellular-equipped fondleslabs taking a few points off WiFi-only machines to emerge with 40 per cent of the market by 2019, up from today's 31 per cent.
