Microsoft’s new photo app lets you edit your selfies like a professional

Microsoft has released a new photo app designed to feel better about your selfies. It’s a simple service, really: you snap or choose a photo from your iPhone’s camera roll and then process it right in the app.
Just like the editing features in Instagram, Microsoft Selfie (that’s the name of the app) is geared towards making sure that while you’re obsessed with that selfie picture, you’re going to look your absolute best in it. In fact, Microsoft has described the app as a “selfie and portrait enhancement application” where it’ll utilize an algorithm to make your photo appear like it was done by a professional.
Microsoft Selfie onboarding Microsoft Selfie onboarding
Although it’s called Microsoft Selfie, you can use either the front-facing or the rear camera to take photos, which means that you can utilize the app’s technology to make basically any photo you have that much better.
The app takes into account factors like your age, gender, skin tone, lighting, noise, and more before making simple changes to your photo. Users have 13 different filters they can choose from to do the post-processing work, but only one can be used at any given time. Although if you want to apply more filters, you could save the file, reopen it again in the app, and edit it using another filter. Once you’re done processing an image, the file is stored on your phone.
Microsoft Selfie onboarding Microsoft Selfie onboarding
Microsoft Selfie does not contain any connections to social networks like Instagram, Google Photos, Facebook, or Twitter, so if you’re looking to share a photo, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way.
On the surface, seeing Microsoft create a selfie “enhancement” app is just bizarre especially when it’s built for the iPhone and not for Windows Phone. Does the world really need another selfie app? However, it’s a good way to showcase the potential of the company’s machine learning, artificial intelligence, and image recognition technology, such as how it is using Project Oxford and its face APIs that debuted in April.
Another possible benefit of using this app is how it’ll could vastly improve the quality of photos taken with the front-facing camera. You probably notice that the pictures taken with the rear-facing lens are often better than the front. When you take selfies, there’s also a bunch of noise (it’s grainy), but now Microsoft’s technology can give you the same look and quality across both lenses on the device.
No word on if this will come to Android phones.

Microsoft Corporation Invites Users to Vote for Games

Users have 5 options, i.e. Chess, Bubble, Casino, Hearts, Word to choose from. The organization is also set to release a preview program for the users to experience the games

Microsoft Corporation is roping users in to vote for the next game in Windows 10, in order to receive feedback so it may improve game features in future. Voting is open until December 17, 2015. Users can vote by clicking here. Users have five options to choose from, i.e. Chess, Bubble, Casino, Hearts, and Word. Microsoft's Casual Games division is responsible to roll out the games for casual players.

For this purpose, the Windows maker has created a website where players can cast their vote, share views regarding upcoming features and current games, and read about the development of casual and existing games. Furthermore, they can join Microsoft Casual Games Inner Circle program and get early access of builds as well as behind-the-scene information. They can also choose the upcoming features for development, and work directly with the game development team.

The organization is also likely to release a preview program for the users to experience the game’s early version. In a blog post, it shared the excitement to collaborate with fans for product and development decisions. Microsoft has been developing casual games for over 25 years. It started this journey with Solitaire in Windows 3.0. The design director, Kevin Lambert and the lead producer, Derek Dutilly showed their enthusiasm for empowering the corporation's fans to make choice of upcoming casual games for next year.

Microsoft app tries to lure you from Android to a Windows phone

Apps on a Microsoft Lumia 950

It's true that Windows Phone (and now Windows 10 Mobile) doesn't have as many apps as Android or iOS. However, the perception of that app deficit may be just as problematic -- why would you switch to a Lumia 950 if you assumed that none of your favorite apps had Windows equivalents? Microsoft clearly isn't happy with this state of affairs, as it justreleased AppComparison for Android to help set the record straight. The app (a spiritual sequel to the old Switch to Windows Phone) tries to match the Android apps on your phone with their mobile Windows counterparts, either giving you an exact parallel or the next best thing.
Whether or not you agree with the findings is another matter. It's good at finding some third-party software (such as Dropbox and Spotify), but it's evident that the company is reaching when it comes to apps from Google, Windows' best-known holdout. It tends to suggest apps and services that either aren't really analogous (UC Browser may be fine, but it's not Chrome) or would require a ton of reinvestment. Are you really going to transfer years' worth of Google Drive files to OneDrive? There are also some conspicuous gaps -- AppComparison didn't find a Windows match for Sonos' controller app, even though Phonos has been around for years. The tool should still be useful, but you'll want to double-check its findings before kicking your Android phone to the curb.

Microsoft Corporation Revamped Bing For iOS Outdoes Google

Microsoft’s Bing app for iOS promises a truly impressive user experience; Bidness Etc takes a look

Microsoft Corporation Revamped Bing For iOS Outdoes Google

Microsoft Corporation has rolled out its Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586 to its ring of insiders, and now appears to be moving toward Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. The company has unleashed a revamped version of its Bing search engine, that attempts to redefine the way one searches the internet using an iPhone. Bidness Etc take a look at the new Bing application that seems to focus on Application Discovery and Quick Interactions.
Almost everyone has recognized the need to streamline search engines on smartphones. Currently, they appear to be PC-based versions which have been made compatible for handsets. Only Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has introduced such changes to Bing that minimize user interaction while carrying out their searches.
Microsoft has introduced a search button within the application which serves as the focal point to perform any standard search. Much like other search engines, Bing also includes popular search topics like “restaurants near me.”
In the application’s main home screen, users are presented with quick tap buttons designed on their preferences. These include “Near Me,” which can show all the nearby available options one has to grab a bite or a cup of coffee.
The application also provides quick links which present users with current movies that are on show in local theaters, along with images and maps. More so, users will come across the latest breaking news when they scroll down within the application. This indicates how much effort Microsoft has put in to make Bing the go-to application for users searching for something.
Microsoft’s new Bing application is one that has a core based on deep-linking; it is capable of launching actual apps when one clicks on apps like YouTube or Twitter. It appears that Bing looks far more useful than Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) own search app, which is yet to understand the need to connect to native iOS applications.
The application also happens to work as a bar-code scanner; you one can point your device’s camera at a QR Code or barcode and Bing will do the rest. The application has some great features but will only succeed if people actually download a separate application to search for content over the internet.
Microsoft has also introduced some much needed improvements in its Bing application. We believe the application will fare even better when the tech giant unleashes Cortana for the iPhone. The company currently has Cortana under testing, but unfortunately Microsoft's conundrum in introducing similar applications is one we are likely to come across in the near future. Microsoft's GM of Search, Ryan Gavin, believes this will not be the case. He said, “The reality is that we don’t think about it that way. We really do think of Cortana as your digital personal assistant. Reaching into search, and reaching into Bing to provide great answers to questions, that’s a big part of her promise, but it’s certainly not her only promise.”
By far, the biggest evidence of Bing’s successful integration with iOS was apparent when it was able to assist Siri queries and even provided web results for the Spotlight feature. Gavin further added, “We continue to have a great partnership with Apple. This is really just a reflection of our work across search, across platforms."
Bing for iOS is currently available for free via Apple’s App Store. The company further revealed that Bing will be brought to Android in the near future.

This Promotion Shows How Microsoft Corporation Thinks About Mobile

Forget Windows Phone: Microsoft is using apps to win.

G
THE LUMIA 950 XL. IMAGE SOURCE: MICROSOFT
Windows Phone has been a failure.
Despite spending billions to acquire Nokia's handset business, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)hasn't been able to drive interest in its mobile operating system. Windows Phone's market share hovers in the low single-digits -- far behind Apple's iOS and Alphabet's(NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Android. Microsoft wrote off the bulk of its handset business in July. It will continue to make Windows Phones, but according toBloomberg, the company will produce far fewer models than it did in the past.
Yet Microsoft isn't giving up on mobile computing -- just the opposite. Although the company may not control the operating system, it's offering an increasing number of mobile services and apps. A recent innovative promotion serves to highlight Microsoft's new mobile strategy.
Get paid to download apps
Last month, Microsoft gave out $25 gift cards at its retail stores. The gift cards were free, but carried one catch: Those who wanted them had to allow an associate to install three of Microsoft's mobile apps on their smartphones. They didn't have to be Windows phones -- they could've been iPhones, or Android handsets from one of Alphabet's many hardware partners. Simply download some Microsoft apps and get paid.

Microsoft has a large and growing number of mobile apps. It's a top developer on both the iTunes app store and Google Play. Microsoft's mobile offerings include messaging stalwart Skype and its Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), but also OneDrive, Bing, and Cortana. In recent months, Microsoft has acquired popular productivity apps Wunderlist, Acompli (now known as Outlook), and Sunrise, and released experimental apps, including Tossup.
Microsoft brings its ecosystem to other platforms
Many of these apps have been widely praised: The Verge labeled Outlook the top email app for iPhone users. Despite its name, Outlook supports third-party email services, including Alphabet's Gmail -- but most of Microsoft's mobile apps serve as conduits to its online services, and even its Windows operating system.
Cortana, Microsoft's digital personal assistant, is available for Android in beta form and will make its debut on iPhone in the near future. It's powered by Microsoft's search engine, Bing, and it interfaces with Microsoft's other services, including Xbox Live. Like Siri and Google Now, Cortana is capable of setting reminders and relaying relevant information. It's also directly embedded into the Windows 10 task bar. By using the same Microsoft account, iPhone and Android handset owners can link their smartphones to their Windows PCs.
Microsoft's Office mobile apps are free to download, but work best when they're paired with an active subscription to its Office 365 service. Using the included 1 terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage, users can easily handle their Office files between their Windows PCs, smartphones, and tablets, and edit them on whichever device they choose.
Bing is profitable and Office 365 continues to grow
These initiatives are already benefiting Microsoft's bottom line. As of the end of September, 18.2 million consumers subscribed to Office 365, up from about 15 million in July. Last month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the performance of its mobile apps during the company's earnings call, noting that "[Microsoft] surpassed 200 million downloads of Office Mobile, more than 1 billion to-do lists have been created so far in Wunderlist, and more than [500 million] people manage their documents and photos in OneDrive."
Bing could offer more upside if Microsoft can convince mobile users to download Cortana. Fueled by its Windows 10 integration, Microsoft's search engine achieved profitability last quarter for the first time in its history. Greater usage of Microsoft's mobile apps could propel Bing even further.
Microsoft may not own the platform, but through its apps, it's still finding a way to succeed in mobile.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Moves Towards One Skype App Across All Platforms

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) previously revealed plans to simplify Skype into a single application. True to its word, the company confirmed on Thursday it will remove the touch-friendly Skype variant in favor of the traditional desktop app, migrating users of the Windows 8 specific version to the existing Windows desktop version. Skype users attempting to use the touch-optimized version of the app will be asked to download the native version effective July 7.

"With the upcoming release of Windows 10 for PCs, it makes sense to use the Skype application optimized for mouse and keyboards use, capable of doing touch as well rather than two separate applications performing the same function," Microsoft officials said in a statement on Thursday.

With the impending arrival of Windows 10 Microsoft is looking to utilize Skype as messaging service in the mold of Apple’s iMessage. However, Skype integration for the final version of Windows won’t be released to coincide with its July 29 release date. Instead, the company will make the videoconferencing application widely available later in the year, in light of the numerous updates planned for the fresh OS.

The latest news will surely disappoint those looking to deploy Skype from their smartphones, PCs, and tablets on Windows 10.

Earlier this week, Microsoft said it was planning to construct Skype Translator, a live translation tool, and integrating it into an updated version of Skype on Windows from July onward. The company is yet to comment on future plans for Skype after disclosing the latest consolidation news.

Microsoft beefs up Xbox ahead of major E3 event

Microsoft unveiled an Xbox One console with double the memory space that will hit the market as the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) video game extravaganza gets under way next week. The new Xbox One model boasts a terabyte of space that will likely appeal to players who are increasingly installing games as digital downloads instead of opting for disks.

Microsoft's move came amid rumors that rival Sony plans to show off a new one-terabyte PlayStation 4 at a media event slated to take place yesterday before the E3 show floor opens the following morning. "Since Xbox One launched, one of the most frequent requests from fans is to add more storage to their consoles," said Microsoft's Larry Hryb, who blogs for the Xbox team using the gamer name "Major Nelson.

" He announced that Xbox One 1TB will be priced at 9 when it begins shipping on June 16 to retailers in the United States and select markets. Current model Xbox One consoles with 500 gigabytes of storage will remain USD 349, which was a USD 50 price cut that had been billed as temporary. The new Xbox One will come with an improved controller, according to Hryb. Microsoft also said that later this year it will begin selling a USD 25 adapter that will allow controllers to be used for Xbox-style play on personal computers powered by the coming Windows 10 operating system. Hryb promised that Microsoft would show off a stellar line-up of Xbox games at E3 next week.

“Microsoft Corporation Should Be More Like Apple Inc :” Barron’s Asia

Previously, Bidness Etc questioned whether CEO Satya Nadella could help Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) recover from years of lost market share. One could say the company is currently on the tip of an iceberg and tilting to either side will bring a different result for the company. Though Mr. Nadella is leading the company in the right direction, there are still certain aspects to the company’s vision and strategy that might not let it grow in the coming years.

Barron’s Asia's Tiernan Ray sets up a case for why the once-ever-popular tech company should be more like Apple, Android. According to him, although Mr. Nadella's entry has taken the company stock to levels of up to $48.30, the company’s hardcore focus on its Windows operating system has kept it back from exploring other areas it could have a strong foothold in. Mr, Ray has previously stated that Microsoft should move away from the Windows OS and become a developer’s platform to explore computing in web and mobile.

In September this year, Microsoft plans to launch Windows 10, and it is predicted that the new OS is going to be a major hit among users and developers alike. The company boasts that the new operating system will have advancements never before seen in Windows and could very well be on par with Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) Max OS X. However, investors who have been with Microsoft for a really long time see this as just normal news.

According to Barron’s, Microsoft analyst Rick Sherlund at Nomura Securities believes the new OS could likely contribute about 17% of Microsoft's annual revenue of $93.5 billion for the fiscal year ending in June, with around 30% of profit. Mr. Sherlund feels that this time around the new OS will not cause as much of a ripple in the industry compared to the past, when a new Windows OS release was excitedly welcomed by the industry.

While speaking to Barron’s, Mr. Sherlund stated: “It used to be they would ship a new version, and the market took it as an inducement to buy new PCs. But the PC market is just too mature at this point for consumers to have a lot of interest in a new operating system.”

Microsoft's more constant and stable revenues are received via sales from third-party PC manufacturers who license Windows for their machines aka original equipment manufacturers (OEM) like Dell and ASUS. Microsoft’s business with OEMs has helped it rake in around $11.1 billion this year, but that figure is facing declines too. Mr. Sherlund estimates that this stream will fall 21% this quarter.

Barron’s believes that Microsoft should change the way it’s running and inform software developers that they need to move their developed programs from Google Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android as well as Apple's iOS, and spend some time on Windows. The company has even unveiled a kit, which developers can use to easily move their programs from the dominant operating systems and bring them over to Windows. Developers on the other hand have no interest in working on a dying breed. Windows phones' market share stands at a mere 3% while Android and iOS dominate the field with a collective 95% market share.

Microsoft says it's taking over updates for Windows 10 Mobile devices

When Microsoft introduced Windows Phone, nearly five years ago, the company promised that it would control the update process, bypassing the carriers if necessary.

The reality of the update process, through major updates to Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, hasn't held up to that ideal, especially with U.S. carriers involved.

Microsoft's Denim update, for example, was announced last September but still isn't available on AT&T's Lumia 830, T-Mobile's Lumia 635, and a handful of other phones. Verizon was the first to release Denim as an over-the-air update, but only after it had continuously rejected the previous (Cyan) update, leaving owners of their flagship Windows Phone device running a badly outdated version.

It's not exactly Android-level fragmentation, but it's a problem.

That's all going to change with Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft says. And this time they swear they mean business.

The original news was buried in a post from the Microsoft Ignite blog, introducing Windows Update for Business :

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to me that that statement applies to all Windows 10 Mobile devices, personal and business, and that the new mobile update process will be consistent with the update process for Windows 10 on PCs. Updates will contain security and reliability fixes as well as new features.

If your phone is running Windows 10 Mobile, Microsoft says, it will get all updates, with Microsoft making the final call on when to push the update button.

That doesn't mean the carriers are completely out of the loop. The Windows Insider program will continue after the launch of Windows 10 Mobile, which means anyone who registers with the Insider program can get early access to updates with new features. The carriers will be part of that testing program, I'm told, probably getting access to builds at the same time as Microsoft's Elite Dogfood group, and their input will help Microsoft decide when an update is ready to go out to all devices.

But those updates will be delivered simultaneously, to all devices on all carriers, meaning much less opportunity for fragmentation.

This new approach sounds very much like what Apple does with iOS on iPhones and iPads, with new versions going out through Software Update independently of carriers.

The story is a little less rosy for anyone with an existing Windows Phone 8.1 device. In theory, all of those devices will be eligible for free upgrades to Windows 10 Mobile at launch. But for that upgrade, the carriers will still be pushing out the updates. That means it's possible some Windows Phone 8.1 owners will still be awaiting their upgrade in mid-2016.

Given recent history, Windows Phone customers have every right to be skeptical.

And of course Microsoft still has to ship Windows 10 Mobile, a milestone that they don't expect to hit until this fall.

Microsoft may not replace Windows 10; could be the last version of the OS

News has it that there won’t be a Windows 11. Yes, Windows 10 is the last traditional release from the company, and Microsoft will improve it by adding enhancements and updates in the future.

TheVerge quotes Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon, a developer evangelist speaking at the company’s Ignite conference saying, “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.”

He reportedly went on to explain how Microsoft has been working on the base of Windows 10 all through last year even when it launched Windows 8.1. The company will continue to further push updates to this latest OS, but will avoid releasing a complete new version.

The reason for this change is Microsoft reportedly plans to launch Windows as a service. However, doesn’t really explain how it plans to do so. “Microsoft has altered the way it engineers and delivers Windows, and the initial result is Windows 10. Instead of big releases, there will be regular improvements and updates. Part of this is achieved by splitting up operating system components like the Start Menu and built-in apps to be separate parts that can be updated independently to the entire Windows core operating system,” points out TheVerge report.

“Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers,” a Microsoft spokesperson later told the news site.

The company recently announced the latest build for Windows 10. Read on to find out what’s new.

Modern Graham Quarterly Valuation Of Microsoft Corporation

MSFT is suitable for both the Defensive Investor and the Enterprising Investor following the ModernGraham approach.

According to the ModernGraham valuation model, the company is overvalued at the present time.
The market is implying a 5.57% earnings growth over the next 7-10 years, but in recent years, the company's earnings growth has not been that strong.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) may attract some potential investors, as the company is so well known for its products. Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing, taught that the most important aspect to consider is whether a company is trading at a discount relative to its intrinsic value. It is through a thorough fundamental analysis that the investor is able to make a determination about a potential investment's merits. Here is a look at how the company fares in the ModernGraham valuation model.

The model is inspired by the teachings of Benjamin Graham, and considers numerous metrics intended to help the investor reduce risk levels. The first part of the analysis is to determine whether the company is suitable for the very conservative Defensive Investor or the less conservative Enterprising Investor, who is willing to spend a greater amount of time conducting further research.

In addition, Graham strongly suggested that investors avoid speculation, in order to remove the subjective elements of emotion. This is best achieved by utilizing a systematic approach to analysis that will provide investors with a sense of how a specific company compares to another. By using the ModernGraham method, one can review a company's historical accomplishments and determine an intrinsic value that can be compared across industries.

Defensive Investor - Must pass at least 6 of the following 7 tests: Score = 6/7

1.Adequate Size of Enterprise - Market capitalization of at least $2 billion - PASS

2.Sufficiently Strong Financial Condition - Current ratio greater than 2 - PASS

3.Earnings Stability - Positive earnings per share for at least 10 straight years - PASS

4.Dividend Record - Has paid a dividend for at least 10 straight years - PASS

5.Earnings Growth - Earnings per share has increased by at least 1/3rd over the last 10 years, using 3-year averages at the beginning and end of the period - PASS

6.Moderate PEmg (price over normalized earnings) Ratio - PEmg is less than 20 - PASS

7.Moderate Price-to-Assets - PB ratio is less than 2.5 or PB x PEmg is less than 50 - FAIL

Enterprising Investor - Must pass at least 4 of the following 5 tests or be suitable for a Defensive Investor: Score = 5/5

1.Sufficiently Strong Financial Condition, Part 1 - Current ratio greater than 1.5 - PASS

2.Sufficiently Strong Financial Condition, Part 2 - Debt-to-Net Current Assets ratio less than 1.1 - PASS

3.Earnings Stability - Positive earnings per share for at least 5 years - PASS

4.Dividend Record - Currently pays a dividend - PASS

5.Earnings Growth - EPSmg greater than that 5 years ago - PASS

Conclusion

Microsoft Corporation passes the initial requirements of both the Defensive Investor and the Enterprising Investor. The Defensive Investor's only initial concern is the high PB ratio, and the Enterprising Investor has no initial concerns. As a result, all value investors should feel very comfortable proceeding to the next part of the analysis, which is a determination of the company's intrinsic value.

When it comes to that valuation, it is critical to consider the company's earnings history. In this case, Microsoft has seen its EPSmg (normalized earnings) rise from $2.12 in 2011 to only an estimated $2.46 for 2015. This is not a very high level of earnings growth, and does not support the market's implied estimate for 5.57% annual growth over the next 7-10 years. The ModernGraham valuation model returns an estimate of intrinsic value falling below the current price, indicating that Microsoft is overvalued at the present time.

Windows Media Center will not be updated for Windows 10, says Microsoft

Microsoft Windows Media Center was first introduced in 2001 as a separate Windows XP version, but the software giant stopped updating it in 2009. The company is now reportedly planning to kill off the Media Center in Windows 10, which means that PCs which are upgraded from previous Windows version will not have this feature, and there will be no way to get it back.

In conversation with ZDNet at the Build developers’ conference in San Francisco, a Microsoft executive confirmed that there will be no update to the company’s Media Center software for Windows 10. If a user tries to install the most recent build of Windows 10 on a PC running Media Center, they will get a message which states, “Uninstall this app now because it isn’t compatible with Windows 10.”

Windows Media Center’s basic functionality included ‘file media player, broadcast TV recording and playback, DVD playback control, CD playback, photo display, media sharing and controlling the channels for TV watching through an attached TV tuner card’, elaborated Venture Beat. It came pre-installed in Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions, and all Windows 7 editions. Later, it was also available on Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8.1 Pro.

Users who do not upgrade their PCs to Windows 10 will still be able to run it on their Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Pro. The company says these users will get support through 2020 and 2023 respectively.

This Microsoft website will detect people's age in photos

If you ever wondered if you look your age in photos, or how old that one aunt in your family really is, there’s now a website for that, thanks to none other thanMicrosoft?

It’s true. The technology company  MSFT -0.86% recently released a tool for facial recognition, and one of its internal teams decided to have fun by using it to build a website that predicts people’s age in photos. It’s aptly named “how-old.net.”

Sure, it’s fun to guess the ages of your friends and family, but we at Fortune wondered—could Microsoft’s technology detect the ages of the industry titans we feature on the cover of our magazine? Could the tool accurately determine the age of Disney CEO Bob Iger? Pope Francis? Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes?

You can see the results in the image above. (The tool stumbled on Apple CEO Tim Cook and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty.)

All fun aside, the website is actually a great example of how powerful so-called machine learning technology can be. The tool is really a collection of advanced algorithms paired with application program interfaces, or APIs, which allow those smarts to be used in different ways and applications, such as the website in question. As more data are fed into computer-generated models, they “learn” and become more accurate.

Microsoft’s tool is not novel, of course—Facebook  FB -3.06%  used a similar approach to recognize and tag people in photos, and Google  GOOG -2.14%  does the same in its Image Search, among other places. But the API aspect makes those capabilities accessible to third-party software developers who in turn unleash them on a world of possible new applications, from criminal investigations to family history. 4 new things we learned about Windows 10 from Microsoft Build 2015

Joe Belfiore, Microsoft's corporate VP of the operating systems group, took to the Build 2015 stage to go over new Windows 10 features.

As expected, Windows 10  got some face time at Microsoft's Build 2015 event in San Francisco, and Joe Belfiore took the stage to go over several of its newest features.

Belfiore brought attention early to how Windows 10 is bringing back the Aero Glass theme from Windows 7, showing that good ideas from the past have not been forgotten.

But what received a greater crowd reaction was the updated Windows 10 version of the Start menu. Removed in Windows 8, the new OS will bring back the Start Menu in the lower left corner, but will also show live tiles to the right of the regular functions as a way to keep both interfaces intact.

A new function dubbed Windows Spotlight gives your lock screen a dynamic, regularly updated background with personalized information and fancy wallpaper images. You can interact with elements in the background and it works as a reminder for Windows services you may not have tried. For example, Spotlight will identify apps and features you haven't used yet, such as the Surface stylus, and offer up a lock screen advertisement of sorts for an app such as Fresh Paint in an effort to get you to try it.

Next, Belfiore used Cortana to launch the third-party communication app Viber. But Cortana can execute in-app commands as well, Belfiore says. "Tell Terry Myerson I'm running really late using Viber." On stage, the Cortana command worked without a hiccup, but he did need to repeat his confirmation a few times before it worked.

Project Spartan gets a new name

Microsoft has been talking about its Internet Explorer replacement for months, but current builds of Project Spartan  on Windows 10 have been in a bit of a rough state, with much of its promised functionality missing. The same is true for builds on Windows phones.

The new browser is now officially dubbed Microsoft Edge . Edge is built as a universal Windows app, meaning it can work across devices. It also has Cortana built-in, which opens up the possibility of Cortana on iOS or Android if an Edge app becomes available on those platforms.

Belfiore also briefly showed off Continuum, a feature that will help apps identify which type of device you're using and then modify the universal Windows app appropriately. He didn't have hardware to show how it would look on a phone, but did show an on-screen simulation of how it works.

Microsoft Corporation Offers Patent Fee Cut if OEMs Pre-Install Its Apps

Microsoft Corporation offers patent fee cut if official equipment manufacturers or OEMs pre-install its apps like Office, Skype, OneDrive and OneNote to their Android mobile units. Digitimes Research reports that Microsoft is enticing more OEMs by offering discounts on licensing costs.

For instance, when an Android OEM pays $3 per device for patent license, Microsoft can lessen the fee to $1.5 if the device has few Microsoft apps pre-installed on it. The $1.5 saving per device is big time, especially when the device manufacturer ships 40 million devices annually. That is a huge $60 million savings.

The software titan’s revenue from patent licensing is in a substantial growth as Android devices are increasing in shipments. Microsoft Corporation offers patent fee cut if OEMs pre-install its apps, as a way to expand the usage of its applications in smartphones and tablets by giving back a part of its income to hardware makers.

Digitimes lately found Microsoft’s offer from the upstream supply chain of smartphones and tablets in China and Taiwan. It is its understanding that Microsoft Corporation has already signed an agreement with more than 10 of its patent licensees including the big names of Samsung Electronics, Pegatron Technology, as well as regional OEMs like TrekStor (Germany), DEXP (Russia), QMobile (Pakistan), Casper (Turkey), JP Sa Couto (Portugal), Hipstreet (Canada), Tecno (Africa) and Datamatic (Italy). These manufacturers may already have agreed to pre-install Excel, Word, OneDrive, OneNote and Skype on their Android devices which will be released to the market this year.

The Redmond, Washington-based tech firm may lure more of its patent licensees to avail of the discount offering, and have its apps pre-installed on the new Android devices. Its list has lots of companies, with Original Device Manufacturers, like HTC Corporation, Hon Hai, Compal Electronics, ZTE Corporation, Quanta Computer Inc. and LG Electronics.

It may be difficult for Android OS maker, Google, to stop its partners from accepting Microsoft Corporation’s attractive offer with the current tough competition among Android devices, which finds other vendors already in losses. A cost cut in licensing fees is an appealing bargain for companies who are looking to cut costs while boosting gross margins. It is anticipated that many Android hardware vendors will accept the deal.

Speaking of patents, Microsoft Corporation this week has lost the first round in its patent battle as allegedly using the technology of patent licensor InterDigital in its smartphones without permission. U.S. International Trade Commission Judge Theodore Essex on Monday said, the Windows software maker infringed two patents of InterDigital’s wireless cellular.

Judge Essex said it will not harm the public if Microsoft Corporation’s devices will be banned import into the U.S. The decision however, is still to be reviewed before implementation.

It was year 2007 when InterDigital, which is based in Wilmington, Delaware, accused Nokia for violating its patents. Its patent is about moderating the power of a mobile device to lessen signal interference. ITC did not find any violation, but in 2012, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, overturned its decision for ITC to check again.

The Redmond firm acquired the handset division of Nokia in 2014. While Microsoft Corporation is currently offering patent fee cut if OEMs pre-install its apps, it calls Monday’s court decision of its ITC case number 337-613, one step in the process.

Microsoft opens door to Android, Apple phone apps

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) is making it easier for apps written for rival Google Inc's (GOOGL.O) Android and Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iOS systems to work on Windows phones, in a bid to attract users to its unpopular mobile devices, the company's operating systems chief said on Wednesday.

The move marks a radical shift in strategy for the world's biggest software company, which still dominates the personal computer market but has failed to get any real traction on tablets and phones, partly because of a lack of apps.

Microsoft has found itself in a circular trap, as many developers will not build apps for Windows phones which have few users, and few people want the phones which have fewer apps than Android or Apple phones.

Getting apps built for Android and iOS onto its phones and tablets could be a shortcut to breaking out of that trap.

"Microsoft is making a major play to win back developers," said Forrester analyst Michael Facemire. "They’ve opened up the once-impenetrable castle walls."

Speaking at Microsoft's developer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Executive Vice President Terry Myerson said developers will be able to use the vast majority of their Android code to turn their apps into Windows-compatible versions, which will work on Windows phones running a special subsystem.

The apps will technically be Windows apps and available only through Microsoft's online app store. The apps would automatically use Microsoft's services such as Bing maps, rather than Google's services, as an app would on an Android phone. That is a crucial distinction because Google gets revenue from ads on services rather than from the Android system itself.

Myerson also announced a surprise move to make it easier for iOS developers to make Windows apps, saying that Microsoft's developer software will be compatible with Objective C, the main programming language used by Apple.

Google declined to comment. Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Microsoft, which bought Nokia's handset business last year, has only 3 percent of the global smartphone market. By contrast, Android phones, led by Samsung (005930.KS), control 81 percent of the market and Apple 15 percent, according to Strategy Analytics.

Microsoft is scheduled to release its new Windows 10 operating system this summer, which for the first time will run across PCs, tablets and phones. It said on Wednesday it is aiming for one billion devices running Windows 10 in two to three years time.

Its new browser will arrive as Microsoft Edge, replacing the waning Internet Explorer, when Windows 10 is released, the company said.
