Microsoft app tries to lure you from Android to a Windows phone

Apps on a Microsoft Lumia 950

It's true that Windows Phone (and now Windows 10 Mobile) doesn't have as many apps as Android or iOS. However, the perception of that app deficit may be just as problematic -- why would you switch to a Lumia 950 if you assumed that none of your favorite apps had Windows equivalents? Microsoft clearly isn't happy with this state of affairs, as it justreleased AppComparison for Android to help set the record straight. The app (a spiritual sequel to the old Switch to Windows Phone) tries to match the Android apps on your phone with their mobile Windows counterparts, either giving you an exact parallel or the next best thing.
Whether or not you agree with the findings is another matter. It's good at finding some third-party software (such as Dropbox and Spotify), but it's evident that the company is reaching when it comes to apps from Google, Windows' best-known holdout. It tends to suggest apps and services that either aren't really analogous (UC Browser may be fine, but it's not Chrome) or would require a ton of reinvestment. Are you really going to transfer years' worth of Google Drive files to OneDrive? There are also some conspicuous gaps -- AppComparison didn't find a Windows match for Sonos' controller app, even though Phonos has been around for years. The tool should still be useful, but you'll want to double-check its findings before kicking your Android phone to the curb.

This Promotion Shows How Microsoft Corporation Thinks About Mobile

Forget Windows Phone: Microsoft is using apps to win.

Windows Phone has been a failure.
Despite spending billions to acquire Nokia's handset business, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)hasn't been able to drive interest in its mobile operating system. Windows Phone's market share hovers in the low single-digits -- far behind Apple's iOS and Alphabet's(NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Android. Microsoft wrote off the bulk of its handset business in July. It will continue to make Windows Phones, but according toBloomberg, the company will produce far fewer models than it did in the past.
Yet Microsoft isn't giving up on mobile computing -- just the opposite. Although the company may not control the operating system, it's offering an increasing number of mobile services and apps. A recent innovative promotion serves to highlight Microsoft's new mobile strategy.
Get paid to download apps
Last month, Microsoft gave out $25 gift cards at its retail stores. The gift cards were free, but carried one catch: Those who wanted them had to allow an associate to install three of Microsoft's mobile apps on their smartphones. They didn't have to be Windows phones -- they could've been iPhones, or Android handsets from one of Alphabet's many hardware partners. Simply download some Microsoft apps and get paid.

Microsoft has a large and growing number of mobile apps. It's a top developer on both the iTunes app store and Google Play. Microsoft's mobile offerings include messaging stalwart Skype and its Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), but also OneDrive, Bing, and Cortana. In recent months, Microsoft has acquired popular productivity apps Wunderlist, Acompli (now known as Outlook), and Sunrise, and released experimental apps, including Tossup.
Microsoft brings its ecosystem to other platforms
Many of these apps have been widely praised: The Verge labeled Outlook the top email app for iPhone users. Despite its name, Outlook supports third-party email services, including Alphabet's Gmail -- but most of Microsoft's mobile apps serve as conduits to its online services, and even its Windows operating system.
Cortana, Microsoft's digital personal assistant, is available for Android in beta form and will make its debut on iPhone in the near future. It's powered by Microsoft's search engine, Bing, and it interfaces with Microsoft's other services, including Xbox Live. Like Siri and Google Now, Cortana is capable of setting reminders and relaying relevant information. It's also directly embedded into the Windows 10 task bar. By using the same Microsoft account, iPhone and Android handset owners can link their smartphones to their Windows PCs.
Microsoft's Office mobile apps are free to download, but work best when they're paired with an active subscription to its Office 365 service. Using the included 1 terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage, users can easily handle their Office files between their Windows PCs, smartphones, and tablets, and edit them on whichever device they choose.
Bing is profitable and Office 365 continues to grow
These initiatives are already benefiting Microsoft's bottom line. As of the end of September, 18.2 million consumers subscribed to Office 365, up from about 15 million in July. Last month, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the performance of its mobile apps during the company's earnings call, noting that "[Microsoft] surpassed 200 million downloads of Office Mobile, more than 1 billion to-do lists have been created so far in Wunderlist, and more than [500 million] people manage their documents and photos in OneDrive."
Bing could offer more upside if Microsoft can convince mobile users to download Cortana. Fueled by its Windows 10 integration, Microsoft's search engine achieved profitability last quarter for the first time in its history. Greater usage of Microsoft's mobile apps could propel Bing even further.
Microsoft may not own the platform, but through its apps, it's still finding a way to succeed in mobile.

Microsoft Windows 10 to come in Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise and Education editions

Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 10 in the next couple of months in around 190 countries in 111 languages, although no fixed date has been announced yet. There will be various editions of Windows 10 according to the use cases. The editions announced include Windows 10 Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise, Education. Let us take a look at each of these editions.

Windows 10 Home edition will be the consumer facing edition which will be seen on most desktop PCs, laptops and 2-in-1s. The Home edition will support voice-assistant Cortana, Windows Edge web browser as well as Windows Hello face recognition, iris scanner and fingerprint login for various Windows apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video.

For the business users, you have the Windows 10 Pro edition, which has all the features of the Home edition plus additional features such as device management, security features, cloud features ideal for smaller businesses. For medium and large size organisations there is Windows 10 Enterprise edition which builds up upon the Windows 10 Pro. Apart from providing security features, Windows 10 Enterprise also has a broad range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management.

On the mobile front, you get Windows 10 Mobile edition which is the new name for Windows Phone OS and the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise edition. As the name implies, Windows 10 Mobile is meant for use on mobile phones, tablets and other touch-centric devices. It will support Windows Universal apps which are there on Windows 10 Home edition along with a touch-optimised version of Office. Windows 10 Mobile will also offer Continuum for phone which will let users use multiple devices seamlessly. Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is the mobile arm of the Windows 10 Enterprise edition. Just like the desktop version, the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will also incorporate the latest security and innovation features on the mobile devices.

Windows 10 Education is a new edition which builds upon Windows 10 Enterprise and is designed for use in schools among staff, administrators, teachers and students. “This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing, and there will be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education,” mentions the Windows Blog.

“Because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses,” said Tony Prophet on the Windows Blog.

Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro will be available as a free upgrade, for the first year, for existing genuine users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. There are no pricing plans announced for use after one year.

Microsoft's Surface sales are on the upswing once again

After a very slow start, Microsoft's Surface finally seems to be hitting its stride. The company made $713 million from Surface sales last quarter, a 44 percent jump over last year, according to its latest earnings report. And yes, it's attributing much of that to the Surface Pro 3, which also saw strong sales during the previous quarter. While any bump is good, it's easy for Microsoft to report revenue growth when it's starting from a low point.

Apple sold around $9 billion worth of iPads during the last quarter, for comparison. It's also worth noting that the company's third quarter doesn't include sales of the new Surface 3, which doesn't ship until next month. It'll be interesting to see if that model ends up helping its Pro sibling come next quarter. Before the Surface Pro 3, Microsoft's Surface sales weren't exactly pretty -- at one point it had to write off nearly $900 million in unsold units.

During the company's earnings call today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that 64 percent of Surface Pro 3 users also use One Note. That's not surprising, since that device's stylus integrates directly into OneNote. Nadella pointed out that the Surface Pro 3's OneNote penetration is also nine times that of any other touch notebook.

Microsoft's Devices and Consumer group, which the Surface is a part of, saw an overall revenue bump of 8 percent compared to last year. It was also helped by strong Office 365 growth (up 35 percent, reaching 12.4 million subscriptions), Bing advertising gains (21 percent), and a 30 percent bump in Xbox Live usage. Oh yah, and it sold 8.6 million Lumia phones, down from 10.5 million from the holiday quarter. It was a different story for Xbox revenues, which fell 24 percent from last year, mostly due to price drops for the Xbox One.

Microsoft's Q3 results get a lift from Office 365 and Azure

Microsoft has reported better-than-expected financial results for the quarter just ended, helped by strong sales of cloud services like Office 365 and Azure.

Commercial cloud revenue more than doubled from a year earlier, the company announced Thursday, and online services like Bing and Xbox Live performed well.

The results were hurt by the weak PC market, however, with sales of Microsoft's Windows and Office software both declining. That meant that while sales were strong, profits declined from last year.

In a statement, CEO Satya Nadella talked of "incredible growth across our cloud services."

Revenue for the quarter, ended March 31, came in at $21.7 billion, up 6 percent from a year earlier, Microsoft said. That beat the analyst forecast of $21.1 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

Earnings were $0.61 per share, down 10 percent from a year earlier but far ahead of the $0.51 analysts had forecast. Microsoft said results would have been significantly better if not for the effects of a strong dollar, which has been affecting most U.S. companies.

Revenue from Microsoft's Device and Consumer segment, which includes Office 365 Consumer, Xbox, Surface and its Lumia phones, climbed 8 percent from the same quarter last year to $9.0 billion.

Commercial revenue, made up of software and services sold to businesses, was up 5 percent, helped by strong growth from Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM.

But sales to businesses of Microsoft's Office and Windows software -- two of its most profitable products -- both declined.

The results are a mixed bag for Nadella, showing that his efforts to grow Microsoft's cloud business are paying off but that Microsoft's fortunes remain heavily tied to the health of the PC market.

Nadella has been reshaping Microsoft since he took over from Steve Ballmer a little more than a year ago. One of his biggest moves was making key Office apps like Word and Excel available for free on Android devices.

He's also said that its upcoming Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for many PC users. That should help ensure a big installed base for the new OS, but it's also left investors wondering what the impact will be on Microsoft's earnings.

Executives may address that question in a conference call planned for Thursday afternoon.

Investors were encouraged by the earnings news, pushing Microsoft's stock up 3 percent in trading after hours, to $44.80.

Among other results from last quarter, Surface revenue of $713 million was up 44 percent from last year, Xbox Live usage grew more than 30 percent, and search ad revenue climbed 21 percent, Microsoft said.

But Windows sales were down across the board, as the refresh cycle from XP drew to a close and customers waited for Windows 10 later this year.

Revenue from Windows Pro licenses sold through PC makers fell 19 percent, while non-Pro revenue fell even more sharply, Microsoft said.

AMD: Windows 10 will launch in late July

CHIPMAKER AMD has, we assume accidentally, revealed that Windows 10 will be released at the end of July.

As noted by Tweaktown, AMD president and CEO Lisa Su revealed the launch timing for Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system during the company's second-quarter earnings call.
Answering a question on inventory plans, Su said: "With the Windows 10 launch at the end of July, we are watching sort of the impact of that on the back-to-school season, and expect that it might have a bit of a delay to the normal back-to-school season inventory build-up."

Of course, Su's remarks might not be accurate, and Microsoft has yet to comment either way on the slip up. In fact, Microsoft has yet to confirm a release date, beyond revealing that it will be available this summer.

Windows chief Terry Myerson said last month: "We continue to make great development progress and shared today that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and 111 languages."

However, while many have cast doubt over talk of a July release date owing to the number of bugs and unpolished features still found in Windows 10, it's likely that AMD would have a pretty good idea as to when the operating system will make it to market.

Such a release date also ties in nicely with Microsoft's vague 'summer' release schedule, and would give Microsoft the opportunity to show off the latest Windows 10 devices at this year's Computex in June.

Microsoft's Build event is due to take place later this month, during which we are likely to hear final Windows 10 release date details.
This slip up comes days after Microsoft pulled the Windows 10 Technical Preview for low-end Lumia handsets, after some users complained that attempting to revert back to Windows Phone 8.1 rendered their device useless.

Microsoft Corporation CEO Satya Nadella Is Top-Paid CEO In The U.S.

For 2014, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, topped the list of the top 100 U.S. CEOs based on their salaries; Warren Buffett came in last

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella has been declared the highest paid chief executive in the U.S., as per a new list of the top 100 CEOs based on their salaries. Of Indian-origin, Nadella replaced Oracle’s Larry Ellison, who acquired the top position last year.

Warren Buffett at 100th spot

The study conducted by Equilar took into account the CEOs’ pay of the top 100 public sector companies based on revenue in the U.S. According to the study, Nadella, with a salary of $84.3 million per annum, tops the list for this year followed by Oracle’s Larry Ellison ($67.3 million for a year). Qualcomm, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM)’s Steven Mollenkopf, with an annual salary of $60.7 million, managed to take third place in the list.

Other CEOs who made it into the top ten this year are Robert Iger of Walt The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), Larry Merlo of CVS Health, K Rupert Murdoch of Twenty-First Century Fox, W. James McNerney Jr. of The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), James Gorman of Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), David Cote of Honeywell International and Kenneth Chenault of American Express Company (NYSE:AXP).

Indira Nooyi, CEO of Pepsi and also of Indian-origin, has been placed at the 19th position with a pay package of $60.7 million per annum. Well-known Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B), with compensation of $464,011 million, has been given the last spot. Further, the median wage of 100 CEOs was found to be $14.3 million, which suggests an increase of 5% for last year compared to 2013.

Actual salary of Microsoft CEOs

However, Microsoft claims that Nadella’s salary for 2014 amounts to just $22.75 million, considering the annual value of special and one-time equity awards, according to the Business Standard. To break it down, Nadella obtained an annual executive compensation worth $11.6 million and a CEO transition award, given only once, of $2.7 million. Also the CEO got a Long-Term Performance-Based Stock Award (LTPSA) that amounts to $8.45 million. When all the above three are added, it results in a total of $22.75 million, according to Microsoft.

Nadella joined Microsoft in 1992 after working for a while at Sun Microsystems, which is now part of Oracle. After having worked for 23 years in the company in various positions, Nadella was appointed as CEO of Microsoft.
