Windows Phone sales have almost ground to a halt

Android and iOS now own 98 percent of the smartphone market.

Gartner has released its smartphone stats for Q4 2015 and the news is especially bad for Microsoft. In Q4 2014, the software giant owned 2.8 percent of the smartphone market -- not great, but still good enough for around 10 million units sold. In the same quarter of 2015, however,Windows Phone sales fell to 4.4 million, giving the OS a mere 1.1 percent of the total market. That means that it's basically in a death spiral, as consumers and app developers alike lose interest. Microsoft's rumoredSurface Phone now looks like its last hope to rescue the division.
The rest of the smartphone news ain't great either, as the overall market grew just 9.7 percent, the least since 2008. Apple, for one, saw a big dip in its market share from 20.4 percent to 17.7 percent year-over-year, which jibes with reports that iPhone sales have dropped after booming earlier in the year. The good news for Apple is that it boosted its share a touch in 2015, and that it's reportedly introducing a lower-cost iPhone to compete in the mid-range market.
Meanwhile, Huawei keeps booming. The company saw a big boost in its worldwide market share from 5.7 percent in Q4 2014 to 8 percent in the same quarter of 2015. That came mostly at the expense of Lenovo, which dropped from a 6.6 percent to a 5.0 percent share. Samsung also gained a bit in the quarter, though it fell considerably in 2015 to a 22.5 percent market share from 24.7 percent last year.
Since most of the growth in smartphone sales is coming from emerging markets, companies like Huawei are taking advantage with affordable handsets. That puts Apple in a bind, growth-wise, as it either has to deliver a more affordable phone or try to steal high-end sales away from Samsung, Sony and other Android device makers. Given this snapshot of the current market, it will be interesting to see what kind of new devices emerge next week at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Here’s our look at the top smartphones of the year: Apple iPhone 6s Plus was the clear winner in our list.

As 2015 comes to an end, we look at the top smartphones that made an impact this year. From top-end devices that cost more than Rs 40,000 to the entry-level phones that start at Rs 5000 and more, we’ve got the entire list covered. We also look at new smartphones brands, devices that stood out during the course of the year.
Top-end
Apple iPhone 6s Plus: This is the most dependable smartphone you can buy. Of course, there is a premium to be paid, but that also gives you access to the best App store, a great battery and a spectacular camera with image stabilisation. And, yes, the 3D touch is just an added feature.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5: The Note continues to be the most productive of all Android smartphones thanks to its amazing stylus. In its latest avatar, the phone is slimmer and has a smaller battery, but that should not affect you. Performance is second to none, and the camera can be stunning when it needs to.

Mid-range
Nexus 5X: Undoubtedly, the new LG Google Nexus 5X is a pure Android beast with an equally disappointing launch price. So, to recreate the original Nexus 5 magic, LG simply lowered the price to under Rs 25,000. Thus, making it one of the best possible deals.

OnePlus X: The OnePlus X comes across as a good mid-range phone with a design and build quality rarely seen in this price point. The phone does not really offer anything unprecedented, but ticks all the boxes and thus makes it to this list.

Entry
Redmi 2 Prime: Xiaomi’s first made in India smartphone has enough prowess to rule the low-cost smartphone market and it surely does. The Redmi 2 Prime is exactly same when compared to the Redmi 2, except that it comes with twice the RAM and storage space. It definitely has to be among the top contenders in the entry level.

Coolpad Dazen 1: Another Chinese smartphone brand with “Make in India” ambitions, this smartphone surprised us with its performance. The Coolpad Dazen 1 is a complete package of greatness for the price.
Honourable Mentions
YU phones: Micromax’s Rahul Sharma launched a new brand last year called YU Televentures and it has managed to carve out a niche for itself. Budget phones like Yuphoria, Yunique impressed users and YU became the highest online-selling brand for 2015, beating even Xiaomi. Yu recently stepped into the flagship category with its Yutopia smartphone, and also launched a slew of services called Around YU for its phones. There’s no doubt that in 2016, we’ll be hearing a lot more from YU.

Vivo: In 2015, Vivo has been about smartphones with great build quality and excellent camera, but the devices have been priced extremely high. Now that Vivo has its own manufacturing plant in Greater Noida, it could bring the cost down and offer even more to users. Vivo also plans to bring some Indian content to its Android UI, which could be a great value addition for many users. With a strong foothold in South India already, 2016 could be the year when more Indians choose Vivo as their primary smartphone.
Honor 4X: Huawei’s most popular handset in India, the Honor 4X packed a great camera. Overall, it easily stood apart from its competitors with its design, performance, battery life and of course, camera.

Microsoft fails Windows Phone fans again by delaying Windows 10 Mobile

windows_10_mobile_phones

Windows Phone fans and fanboys have a tough job. They have to stand by an operating system with a new name every few years, significantly fewer apps than the competition, and a distant third place spot in the market. The latest news out of Microsoft isn’t making their lives any easier.
This week, Microsoft failed to deliver on its promise of rolling out Windows 10 Mobile devices to existing Windows Phone devices in December. The new target? 2016.
“The Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will begin rolling out early next year to select existing Windows 8 and 8.1 phones,” a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat. That means not a single Windows phone will be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile in 2015.
microsoft_lumia_windows_10_mobile
n October, the promise was different. “Broad availability of Windows 10 on other devices, including mobile phones, will begin rolling out in December.”
Delay after delay.
Of course, releasing software before it’s ready is never a good idea. But that’s not the issue: It was Microsoft that said Windows 10 Mobile would be ready by December.
To be fair, Microsoft did manage to release the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, the first Windows 10 Mobile devices, this November. But the phones didn’t generate much excitement. Furthermore, the company limited carrier availability, almost as if it didn’t want the new phones to reach maximum sales potential.
If you’re a Windows Phone fan looking to get the latest and greatest from Microsoft, your best bet is to become a Windows Insider and help the company test new builds (the latest cumulative update came out on December 17). Looking to buy a new device? Your only choices are the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL (if you can find them). Looking to get Windows 10 Mobile on your existing device and take advantage of the free upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1? You’ll have to keep waiting.

Many of course expected to be waiting a while before they could get Windows 10 Mobile on their phone. After all, not all Windows Phone devices will be supported on day one (Microsoft still hasn’t released a list), and certainly not all at once. Carriers will, of course, slow down the upgrade process. Furthermore, Microsoft explained that Windows 10 was coming to PCs before phones, and the release gap made a lot of sense.
Windows naturally has a much bigger user base on the PC than on the phone, so Microsoft focused on getting users to upgrade there first, especially given its goal of hitting 1 billion devices running Windows 10 “in two to three years.” Test builds of Windows 10 Mobile were always behind their PC counterparts in terms of features and stability, largely because Windows 8 was released before Windows Phone 8, so the latter simply got a late start. On top of all this, add that Windows 10 Mobile has to go through carrier testing, something Microsoft naturally has little control over in various parts of the world.
But the part that Microsoft did have control over, it failed to get out the door. Had the company released Windows 10 Mobile upgrades for a handful of existing Windows Phone devices, it could claim there was no delay. Just a rolling release. Hell, even upgrades for two phones would have been a start.
Remember, Windows 10 for PCs was released in July. December already meant a five-month gap.
The worst part is that Microsoft is no longer committing to a month. “Early next year” roughly translates to Q1 2016, which could be January, February, or March. So anywhere from six to eight months after Windows 10 for PCs rolled out. And again, that will just be a handful of devices. Let me put this another way: Many Windows Phone owners will be waiting for Windows 10 Mobile through the most of 2016.
And the next two months won’t be easy for Windows Phone 8, ahem Windows 10 Mobile, fans. They will have to ignore all the new hardware coming out of CES and Mobile World Congress. Assuming they aren’t buying a Lumia 950 or Lumia 950 XL, which received lukewarm reviews at best, they will have to tell themselves it’s not worth looking at what other platforms are showing off, because their Windows 10 Mobile update is coming.

Want To Test Microsoft's Continuum? This May Be The Windows Phone You Need

A new, high-end Windows Phone was spotted on the GFXBench benchmarks database on Friday. This could wind up being Microsoft’s next flagship Lumia—and the first one to offer its exciting new Windows 10 feature, Continuum, which lets you turn your phone into a desktop PC.

Neowin noted that NokiaPowerUser was the first to spot the listing, which calls the phone a “Nokia RM-1106,” and says it runs the Windows Phone operating system.

Nokia’s mobile division is now a subsidiary of Microsoft proper, so its designation as a Nokia device is likely a holdover. What’s important are the specifications listed on the benchmarks entry, and what they might mean for Windows Phone users waiting for Microsoft to flip the switch on for Windows 10, the first truly unified desktop/tablet/phone operating system from Microsoft.

Inspecting The Specs

The entry seems to reveal some high-end specs that suggest it could be the handset codenamed “Talkman” that we’d heard about in early May, which Neowin and NokiaPowerUser theorize could be a Lumia 930 follow-up. It’ll sport 32 GB of onboard storage, 3 GB of RAM, a six-core CPU, a 20-megapixel rear camera, and a 5.2-inch HD display.

The actual figures in the entry differ a bit from the ones listed above, but that’s only because the benchmarks record the space available at the time of the test itself; 27 gigabytes of storage is what’s left over after accounting for the space taken up by the OS itself, while the 1.5 GB of RAM shows what’s not being used.

What’s most significant, however, is that these specs seem to confirm that Microsoft has big plans for its mobile devices. Windows 10 Mobile—which will replace the “Windows Phone” name of its mobile OS—will offer users the Continuum feature, which changes the user interface based on its context.

For instance, if I’m using my Surface Pro 3 with a keyboard, I’ll have a traditional desktop-like Windows interface. But if I take the keyboard off, Continuum will know this, and ask if I want to switch to tablet mode. That mode sports a touch-optimized interface, one more conducive to using a stylus or my finger to interact with Windows.

The same powers will come to Microsoft’s mobile offerings. When you plug a Windows 10 Mobile phone into a larger display along with a keyboard and mouse, for instance, Continuum will know what’s happening and change its UI to reflect its new setting.

Suddenly mobile phones will be able to become real, full-fledged PCs—and the specs revealed in this benchmark entry show that Microsoft won’t skimp on the power when it comes to showing off what Continuum can do.

In the meantime, developers experimenting with Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview via the Windows Insider program ought to think about all that can be done on a device with those specifications.

While Microsoft has said that the mobile version of its new operating system will likely come out a little while after the desktop version, it’s never too soon to start thinking about new and interesting ways that Continuum will change the way we work with Windows.
