Nintendo: Sorry About the Amiibo Mess

Nintendo today apologized for the shortage of amiibo figurines, and promised to be more communicative with customers about when new ones are on their way.

Nintendo's amiibo arrived last year, but the company had trouble keeping up with demand. In February, it blamed a U.S. port strike, but some versions were in short supply due to retailer exclusivity.

"We understand how frustrating it can be at times if consumers are unable to find certain figures, and we apologize for that," Nintendo said in a Facebook post. "We're trying to meet the demands of our fans and consumers by increasing the amount of amiibo we manufacture and ship to retail. We may continue to see consumer demand outpace supply levels for certain characters at times, but we will do our best to prevent that from happening."

Amiibo is Nintendo's line of Skylanders and Disney Infinity-like miniature toys. Your amiibo stores game data, so when you touch your amiibo to a Wii U GamePad, character data is downloaded into the game you're playing, or you can send data to the figurine.

Character options include Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Fox, and Yoshi. Going forward, "some figures will be easier to find than others," Nintendo said today. "We are constantly looking for the opportunity to reissue amiibo and are already making plans to bring back some currently out-of-stock amiibo figures."
Also on tap is Animal Crossing amiibo cards, which will arrive by year's end.

How to watch every Marvel property in the perfect order

Infographic: We've laid out every Marvel movie and TV show -- and the absolute ideal order for watching them -- so you can go into the "Avengers" sequel super prepared.

You've probably seen most of Marvel's films, but what about the TV shows?

If you're like me, that is to say a continuity junkie, timelines are very important to you -- but timelines in the world of comics and movies  can be more than a little confusing. So to help you fill in the gaps before you see "Avengers: Age of Ultron ," watch all the shows for fun, or even just try to impress your friends, we've created a timeline of Marvel's Phase 1 and 2 properties in the perfect viewing order.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it's called, also sometimes includes connected properties such as comics or shorts. Here we've left out smaller properties and stuck to the big two: films on the left side, shows on the right.

Razer Blade (2015, QHD+) review:

Razer's Blade remains one of the thinnest, lightest gaming systems you can get. Clad in black aluminum like the 2014 version, the 14-inch notebook weighs just south of 4.5 pounds (2kg) and measures 0.7-inch thick (17.9mm).

Inside its 13.6-inch-wide-by-9.3-inch-deep frame (345mm by 235mm), you'll find a high-performance Intel mobile processor backed by 16GB of memory, Nvidia's GeForce GTX 970M with 3GB of its own memory and your choice of a 128GB, 256GB or 512GB solid-state drive (our review laptop had a 256GB LiteOn L9G series).

The processor and graphics are the updates here, and Razer doubled the RAM for the same $2,399 it charged for last year's model. In the UK, it sells for £2,162.49 and pricing in Australia is AU$3,700. Dropping to a 128GB SSD shaves $200 off that price (£1,998; AU$3,500), while jumping to a 512GB SSD brings your total up to $2,699.99 (£2,432; AU$3,900).

While those components alone might not seem worth the premium price, when you consider the whole package, the Blade is fairly priced. And that includes one of the nicest displays I've seen on a Windows 8.1 laptop.

Design and features

In a sea of silver aluminum laptops, the Blade's matte-black chassis emblazoned with the company's glowing green triple-snake logo definitely stands out. That boomslang green continues on the inside to the backlit keyboard and even to the tabs in its three USB 3.0 ports. It's just enough flash without crossing over into aggressive garishness.

The keyboard is easily one of the best you'll find on a system this thin: responsive with good travel and well placed keys. Even the font choice is pretty cool. After a little use, I had no problem finding keys without taking my eyes off the screen and I didn't experience any issues with multiple key combos.

Though you might not use it much for gaming, the Synaptics touchpad is excellent as well. You can fine-tune its performance to your liking, including turning the palm-check option all the way up, which prevented cursor jumpiness while typing. My only gripe is with the half-height mouse buttons Razer used, which my thumb had trouble finding.

Flanking the keyboard are some great-sounding stereo speakers that will play loudly without distortion. You'll probably want to wear headphones to block out the cooling fans when the system is really cranking, but otherwise they deliver full sound for movies, music and games.

Razer switched to a 3,200x1,800-resolution touchscreen for the 2014 Blade, and that's what you get here, too. It's a bright, color-accurate display that's not only very nice to game on, but great for entertainment and video and photo work as well. The IPS panel gives you wide viewing angles without a significant drop-off in color or contrast, regardless of the angle you're viewing it from.

However, though the screen gets pretty bright, the glare from the glossy screen is tough to overcome. Working on this screen in a well-lit office or outdoors will have you fighting reflections. If don't see the value of having a glossy UHD+ touchscreen for your needs, Razer does offer an excellent alternative in the form of a full HD non-touch IPS display with a matte finish at a lower cost.

Rounding things out are 802.11ac wireless and Bluetooth 4.0, a full-size HDMI output with 7.1-channel audio support and a headphone/mic jack. There's also a 2-megapixel webcam with a dual-array mic to help suppress background noise. There's no Ethernet jack, though, so you might want to invest in an Ethernet-to-USB 3.0 dongle for one of its three ports.

Performance and battery life

Again, there are no configuration options beyond selecting storage capacity, and even that's limited to just three choices for its single SATA M.2 slot. The hardware here does deliver smooth gameplay -- even at full resolution -- but it's something you'll have to test on a game-by-game basis.

For example, Metro: Last Light, even though it's a couple years old, is still a challenge. With the resolution set to 3,200x1,800 pixels, quality set to high, texture filtering at AF 16X, Advanced PhysX and SSAA enabled, tesselation on high and motion blur on normal, the Blade hit just 14.3 frames per second. Dropping only the resolution setting down to 1080p, though, gets you a playable 34fps.

Origin PC Eon15-X (2015) review:

Gaming laptops have made great strides in the past year or two, delivering highly competitive performance and a wide range of configuration options. Mainstream models have slimmed down in size, using Nvidia's GeForce 860M graphics card to offer better-than-console experiences, as in the case of the HP Omen, while enthusiast laptops from Asus, Origin PC, Razer and others have used the higher-end GeForce 980M card to push games at 4K resolutions.

But gaming desktops have not been left out of the PC gaming renaissance. Nvidia's recent Titan X GPU and Intel's Haswell-E processors are desktop-only parts that push game performance to a level where it's challenging to even find a game that can give the highest-end gaming desktops a serious workout, as seen in our recent tests of two Titan-X desktops, the Maingear Shift and Origin PC Millennium.

But where you previously had to choose between laptop portability and desktop power, Origin PC is now offering a combination system that uses laptop parts, such as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M GPU, but paired with a desktop CPU, in this case a 4GHz Intel Core i7-4790K. This specific combination, which includes a 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, is currently $2,549 (that would be roughly £1,670 in the UK), although prices for build-to-order components can shift quickly, and many configuration options are available.

We've actually seen gaming laptops that have used desktop CPUs before, but traditionally those systems have needed chassis that are so big and bulky, they're completely impractical, and one might as well switch to a dedicated gaming desktop at that point.

What's different about the Eon15-X is that Origin PC is using a chassis that, while not exactly svelte, isn't much bulkier than the standard gaming laptops we're used to seeing. It's an off-the-shelf laptop body from a third-party original equipment manufacturer, so it's conceivable that you'll run into other boutique PC makers using the same basic body. The unique value a company such as Origin PC (founded by former Alienware guys) brings is in choosing the components and tuning them for maximum performance.

With Origin PC, what you're really paying a premium for is a high level of personalized service and support, including lifetime tech support, in the form of access to phone or email assistance, and free labor on future upgrades and repairs.

The performance boost in this system, versus a slightly less bulky gaming laptop that pairs mobile graphics with a mobile processor, is more pronounced in non-gaming tasks than in PC game frame-rates. The added expense and size won't make a huge difference for games, but, the application performance was good enough that it's worth considering the Eon-X line versus the slimmer Eon-S line, if you don't mind a slightly larger desktop footprint.

While there are ways to get decent gaming performance in a smaller package, and ways to stack three Nvidia Titan-X cards together for a rig that laughs at 4K resolution, the desktop/laptop hybrid hardware in the Eon15-X strikes me as a combination that works surprisingly well.

Design and features

When PC makers such as Origin PC buy these third-party laptop bodies and then fill them with custom components, you're stuck dealing with a thick, heavy machine that doesn't feel as if it was designed from the ground up for gamers, at least not for those spending in excess of $2,000. To make it feel a little more custom, you get a handful of physical tweaks for character, such as a custom A-panel, which is the panel covering the back of the lid.

Previous Origin PC A-panels have been sculpted and angular, reminiscent of older Alienware laptops, but this one is subdued and nearly flat, although painted in a brilliant automotive red (other colors are available). Here, we don't get the backlit Origin PC logos on the back of the lid or on the touchpad that some other systems we've tested from that company have included, but when it comes to laptops that are already so large and bold-looking, less can be more when it comes to branding.

The key faces on the keyboard are widely spaced, as in a standard island-style keyboard, but the base of each key is wider and nearly touches its neighbor. The large keys are great for WASD gaming, and the backlighting control can set different zones with different colors under the keyboard, plus a separate zone for a light on the front lip.

The display is a vital component for any gaming laptop, and the 15.6-inch screen here has a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels. That's the longtime standard for multimedia and gaming PCs, but many laptops are pushing past that now, from Apple's Retina displays to the better-than-HD options available in gaming laptops from Lenovo, Razer and others. Bowing to that, Origin PC now offers a 4K 3,840x2,160 option for an extra $144. We haven't seen that version in person, but Origin PC notes that it has a glossy finish, as opposed to the matte finish on the 1080p display we tested.

Microsoft Corporation To Announce Limited Edition Halo 5 Xbox One

Fans of the Halo franchise might rejoice if they were planning to buy a new Xbox One console, while others might find that this is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to the next-gen console. Microsoft will be releasing its very own Halo-themed Xbox One console. Microsoft has had a number of themed consoles in the past, which have been limited editions and given fans of certain games something to cheer about. Microsoft did something similar with Sunset Overdrive, and now they are doing the same with Halo 5.

Josh Holmes, Studio Head for Halo 5 Guardians, was considerably pleased about the prospect. He all but confirmed the possibility of a Halo-themed Xbox One console, and had this to say on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR): "There is a limited edition console coming, yes. It hasn’t been revealed yet, but it’s pretty sweet."

“Halo 5: Guardians," is said to be released on October 27 and it would appear that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is aiming to cash in on the release. Late October gives Microsoft enough time to plan, design, and release the console. And if Microsoft can get the designs in on time, we can even expect to get the first glimpse of the new Halo Xbox One at the E3 Expo, which takes place from June 16 to June 18.

Microsoft has been preparing to cash in on the Halo franchise for quite a while now, announcing different “exclusive” items to tempt gamers and ardent fans of the show into making purchase.

The official blog has a $99.99 bundle, which includes Halo 5: Guardians, an “exclusive poster” (only for those who pre-order), and “new digital content to enhance Spartan combat and exclusive items wrapped in a uniquely designed steel book.” If you are willing to spend $249.99, you can get all of the above, plus a commemorative statue designed by 343 industries themselves.

So, do you plan on buying the Halo-themed Xbox One? Nothing shows your commitment like an entire powerful gaming console plus web browser plus all the things the Xbox One is, which is designed in the shape of one of the most popular games in the world right now. It certainly would be a limited edition and might be worth the cash. What we want to know is – are the aesthetics enough to convince you to splash some more cash to become one of the proud owners of the limited edition Xbox One? Let us know in the comments below.

Kabam restructures to focus only on the biggest mobile game hits

Kabam used to experiment a lot with all sorts of strategy games. But the mobile game company is announcing today that it will focus its 825 employees on a singular push to create games for the top-10 positions on the mobile app stores.

The signals a lot of internal change at San Francisco-based Kabam, including some unspecified layoffs in Kabam’s older businesses, as well as some expansion in other areas.

And it also portends an evolution in the mobile game market, which has been driven by “mobile-first” studios which were once independents. Now the growth could be captured by big game companies and the brand-oriented companies that are pouring resources in to the market, much like happened in consoles. Mobile games could grow to $30 billion this year and exceed the console business, according to market researcher Newzoo.

Kevin Chou, chief executive of Kabam, wrote a long blog post on the strategy shift today. He noted the company has had a history of restructuring to stay ahead of the market. It started on Facebook in 2009, but it shifted away from the social network after Facebook changed the rules on game makers. Kabam shifted to have more than half its revenues come from beyond Facebook by 2011.

It moved to mobile next and succeeded with Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North, and scored a big success with the branded mobile game The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth. Now the company has hired leaders from its console brethren, and it is organizing its studios to make “AAA mobile games,” or those that deliver high-end experiences and occupy the top 10 ranks.

As a result of its strategic maneuvering, Kabam is now one of the biggest mobile game companies with more than $400 million in annual revenues and enough financial firepower to shoot for the very top of the industry.

Kent Wakeford, chief operating officer of Kabam, said in an interview with GamesBeat that the market has moved in this direction. He said that market researcher App Annie notes that the top game in the app stores, Supercell’s Clash of Clans, is making $80 million a month, up 1750 percent from $4 million a month for the No. 1 game in 2012. By comparison, the No. 100 game in 2015 makes $1.2 million a month, up 295 percent from $311,000 a month for the No. 100 game in 2012.

That means that the industry is consolidating around the top games, Wakeford said. And that’s where Kabam has to go, he said.

Kabam has raised lot of money to accomplish its goals from investors that include Alibaba, Google, Intel, MGM, and Warner Bros.

Now the company aims to create $1 billion annual mobile game franchises.

“We are in a market where the largest game franchise in the world is no longer on console but rather on a mobile device,” Chou wrote. “And the market is still growing at a blistering pace, where the winners of tomorrow will be much bigger.”

Markets for the size of the mobile game market vary widely. Chou cited market researcher IDG, which generated $17.5 billion in revenues in 2014 and will hit $27 billion in the next five years.

Kabam is one of a handful of companies in the world in a position to capitalize on this global market opportunity,” Chou wrote.

I asked Wakeford if reorganization will mean layoffs. He noted there would be adjustments, but that the restructuring of the studios has been happening over a period of months. In any case, Kabam isn’t going to disclose much about layoffs in connection with this strategic shift, Wakeford said. But he did say that, after the changes, Kabam is 825 people now, and it has said it has been more than 850 in the past.

“This is a global refocusing of the company that began six months ago,” Wakeford said. “We are chasing after the big prize in the game industry.”

The result of the reorganization is that Kabam will focus more resources and talent on fewer games that it will launch on a global basis and manage as long-term franchises. Right now, about 60 percent of revenue comes from North America, and the rest from Europe. Chou said the company would now invest more heavily in Asia, where the company has a studio in Beijing.

“We are seeing another shift and it requires a pivot,” Wakeford said. “We will focus on AAA games. It’s an opportunity, as there’s a disproportionate market share for the No. 1 game.”

Chou noted that China is the world’s biggest games market with an installed base of 700 million mobile devices compared with North America’s 283 million devices.

“Already the same size as the U.S., China’s mobile gaming market grew at roughly 100 percent last year and continues on its searing pace with market saturation of mobile devices several years away,” Chou wrote. “Kabam is better poised to enter this lucrative market than any of our competitors due to our five years of successful operations in Beijing.”

He noted for the first time that Kabam has financial and strategic partnerships with three major Chinese companies. Alibaba was announced last year as it invested more than $120 million at a valuation in excess of $1 billion. The other two haven’t been disclosed, including one that participated in a secondary financing while the other came through its acquisition of TapZen in Los Angeles.

“Our restructuring beefs up our Studios leadership team, shores up the company’s Hollywood partnerships, readies distribution platforms in China, and trims areas of the business that are not core to developing AAA titles that match Kabam’s new Marvel Contest of Champions, Fast & Furious: Legacy and Spirit Lords in quality,” Chou wrote.

Last fall, Kabam said it was divesting its legacy web games. It also hired some new executives such as Nick Earl, a former Electronic Arts studio executive, and Aaron Loeb, another former Electronic Arts leader. Mike Verdu, head of the Los Angeles studio, came in via the acquisition of TapZen.

Chou said that the company has reduced its third-party publishing business and cancelled games in development that didn’t meet its new AAA quality goals. It also delayed the release of other games to make sure it has enough development time to make them shine. And it is reducing its investment in its older games, while maintaining them for the players who still enjoy them.

In 2015, Wakeford said that Kabam will publish just four games, compared to 12 last year. But he said revenues from the new games and existing games will boost revenue above 2014.

Earl, president of Kabam Studios, now leads a group with four divisions. Loeb, senior vice president, will lead the role-playing game studio in San Francisco and Vancouver. His studio is responsible for titles such as Marvel Contest of Champions and Fast & Furious: Legacy, original titles like Spirit Lords, and another major Hollywood franchise to be announced soon.

Kabam said its first installment in the Fast & Furious franchise was downloaded by customers more than 60 million times since it launched in 2013. The Marvel Contest of Champions game has been downloaded more than 31 million times.

Kabam also has a strategy game studio, headed by Verdu. Based in Los Angeles, this studio is responsible for This Means War! and another upcoming original strategy title.

The company will also expand in Asia, including the studio in Beijing headed by Kabam cofounder and senior vice president Mike Li. He has been running that studio since 2011, and now that studio will make games for both the Chinese and Western markets.

Lastly, Kabam will centralize its platform and operations group under senior vice president Paxton Cooper. That group will provide tech and business services for the other groups.

Chou said that Kabam will work more closely than ever with its Hollywood partners to bring entertainment properties to free-to-play gaming. Kabam is creating a second Marvel game, and last month it launched Fast & Furious: Legacy, a sequel to Fast & Furious 6: The Game. Kabam is introducing another Hollywood game sometime soon.

Chou acknowledged not everything is a success.

“It’s disappointing that some of our big bets from earlier years have proved unsustainable while others have come at an expense that we cannot recoup,” he said. “I especially dislike having to say goodbye to valued employees. No CEO wants to eliminate jobs. It’s the least desirable part of my job. In fact, I hate it.”

He added, “At the same time, I could not be more confident, and excited, about Kabam’s future direction. Every time Kabam adapts to market conditions, we emerge stronger and more competitive.”

Chou said that Kabam has been profitable since 2012 and it has more than $150 million in the bank.

I noted that Kabam will face tough competition from Supercell, King, and Machine Zone, which have been at the top of the charts for a long time.

“Once you are in the top five or top 10, you have a financial structural advantage that allows you to invest capital into areas that are higher than other companies could,” Wakeford said in response. But he noted that innovation will always lead to changes in the top ranks.

The top games are gathering more of the money.

10 Microsoft HoloLens games and apps we want to see

Ever since Microsoft announced its augmented reality headset, HoloLens, in January, the company has declared war on competitors pushing virtual reality as the future of gaming.

If Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus stress immersive gaming, HoloLens encourages mixing video gaming with real life. But unlike these headsets, HoloLens's abilities extend far beyond entertainment.

HoloLens can host games built for both Xbox One and Windows 10, and Microsoft recently revealed that all apps with Windows Universal code can appear on HoloLens as holograms. In fact, for any developer that wants to incorporate other HoloLens-specific features into their products, the company plans to release the device's API (or application program interface) to app makers soon.

While we can expect the availability of already-demoed games like Minecraft and obvious choices like Netflix and Skype, we can only guess what other apps will launch with the device.

Naturally, we did just that, looking at the most popular games and apps on the Windows Store. We asked ourselves, what would really showcase augmented reality's potential for innovative user experiences, and how?

How many of these ideas are feasible with HoloLens's underlying technology won't become clear until later. Until then, these are the apps and games we hope to see in Microsoft's vision for augmented reality.

Modern life is all about pretending you're good at multitasking. This popular app has over 2,400 free educational videos and would work perfectly as a holographic visual display instructing you on things like art history or economics while you fold laundry or do the dishes.

Beyond a standard hologram, the app could employ OnSite (the tech Microsoft used to show the surface of Mars on HoloLens) to improve the educational experience. Imagine if the app projected paintings from the Museum of Modern Art onto your wall or let you conduct chemical experiments and dissections with a virtual lab station.

Emphasizing HoloLens's educational benefits and its ability to take us on pseudo-field trips could make it a popular buy for kids, or hell, even their parents.

Similar apps: How Stuff Works, Encyclopedia Britannica

Allrecipes

If HoloLens can guide us through fixing our plumbing, why can't it help us overcome our terrible cooking skills?

Allrecipes' hugely popular cooking apps Dinner Spinner and Video Cookbook feature how-to videos with synced cooking instructions, menu planners and shopping lists, perfect for augmenting your kitchen while cooking. The hands-free app could, for example, superimpose cooking instructions and an ingredient checklist above the stove, with a 3D image of what your dinner should look like at step six versus the pale imitation sitting on your countertop.

A holo-video could detail next steps, autoplaying without having to put your greasy mitts on any smartphone, tablet or laptop. HoloLens has shown how it can be helpful in special circumstances, like repairs, but it needs apps like this that make day-to-day tasks that much easier - and enjoyable.

Similar apps: Cocktail Flow

Flipboard

Remember Tom Cruise using the augmented-reality computer from Minority Report?

A Flipboard app designed for HoloLens that shares similarities to fictional 2054 technology could only boost excitement for Microsoft's new device. With this beloved Windows app, your personalized magazines and newspapers, tailored to your interests and reading habits, would sit on your coffee table or desk.

Opening one would spread out your tailored content and news across the table surface or in the air in front of you, with thumbnails of upcoming and related stories sitting on the margins waiting for you to swipe them into full view. This app could exhibit Kinect 2.0's ability to comprehend complicated gestures and allow users to select one small window of content out of dozens.

Similar apps: News Republic, Paper, Zinio

Autodesk SketchBook

At the Windows 10 event in Redmond earlier this year, Microsoft emphasized the possibilities of engineering impressive designs for 3D printing through holograms. But not everyone has the skills or patience for that. Instead, HoloLens could target a more casual crowd by letting users paint fun virtual designs on their bedroom walls or trace the Mona Lisa in their living room.

The app's animation features could also allow for dynamic movement with the designs. If XKCD's sloppiest stick-figures shine above your best efforts, you could even download or purchase other artists' amazing designs to cover your house's interior instead - a modern upgrade of desktop backgrounds.

Similar apps: Fresh Paint

Kindle

Reading books in AR could incorporate enhancements in e-book technology while preserving your focus on the actual book. Without the limiting screen dimensions of an e-reader or tablet, publishers could surround the holographic text space with windows of useful information.

For example, as you read Game of Thrones, you can locate the narrator's location on the book's map sidebar, or pull up Daenerys's family tree alongside the text without losing your view of the page.

Kindle could provide universal widgets as well, such as a glossary or dictionary, a bookshelf of recommended follow-up reads, or an MP3 player for turning on the audiobook in-app, all present without having to navigate away from the text.

'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' trailer leaks early

Though the hotly anticipated trailer was slated for release on Monday, a leaked version finds its way online.

While director Zack Snyder tweeted a teaser version of the film's full trailer and promised a Monday release in special iMax screenings earlier this week, a camcorder rip of the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" trailer has leaked online early.

Driven by voice-overs from Holly Hunter, Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons' Alfred Pennyworth, Superman is far from the favourite son of the city of Metropolis.

The film's previously teased-at inspirations from Frank Miller's politically charged "The Dark Knight Returns" are in full-force here, right down to an armored Batman set to go toe-to-toe with Superman in the rain.

Ben Affleck's Batman finally makes his on-screen debut and asks a burning question that, for my money, will follow in the footsteps of Heath Ledger's "Why so serious?" in his iconic turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight".

Fans can still make a reservation to attend one of the viewing events on the big screen, but Snyder warned that space was limited. If you can't wait that long, make sure to get the leak while it's hot.
