The LG Lancet will hit stores beginning on May 21 and will retail at a cheap price of $120. Verizon Edge customers can have the device for $5 per month on a 24-month subscription.

Windows 10 Editions Announced; Windows Phone to Become Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft ahead of the scheduled summer release of the Windows 10 (for PCs), has revealed the various editions of the new OS. The company on Wednesday via its official blog announced the editions: Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise.

Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft, recently confirmed that Microsoft was "on track" for a summer release of Windows 10 for PCs, followed by versions for mobiles and tablets. Unfortunately, the company is yet to reveal an exact time frame for the Windows 10 release. The Redmond giant as of now has revealed that its new OS will be available in summer in 190 countries and 111 languages.

Microsoft says that the different Windows editions are tailored for various device families and uses. Windows 10 Home will be the consumer-focused desktop edition and will be available for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1 devices.

It will feature Microsoft's personal digital assistant, Cortana alongside the Microsoft Edge browser; Continuum tablet mode (for touch-capable devices); Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint login, and will come preloaded with a range of universal Windows apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video.

For complementing Windows 10 Home, Microsoft has the Windows 10 Pro edition, which is a desktop edition for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1 devices. It will come with same features as Windows 10 Home; though it will include additional features for the needs of small businesses. The company touts that Windows 10 Pro will be ideal for organisations supporting Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) programs.

Windows 10 Mobile, the new official name of the Windows Phone platform, has been designed to cater touch-based devices like smartphones and small tablets. Similar to Windows 10 Home, it will feature various universal Windows apps as well as touch-optimised version of Office.

Microsoft, as promised earlier, has announced that the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro will be available as a free upgrade to qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It's worth noting that the free upgrade is only available in the first year after launch.

Windows 10 Enterprise in addition to Windows 10 Pro offerings adds advanced features targeting medium and large sized organisations.

"Windows 10 Enterprise also supports the broadest range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management. It will be available to our Volume Licensing customers, so they can take advantage of the latest innovation and security updates on an ongoing basis. With Windows 10, Enterprise customers will also have access to the Long Term Servicing Branch as a deployment option for their mission critical devices and environments," notes Microsoft's Tony Prophet, Corporate Vice President, Windows and Search Marketing.

Other Windows 10 versions include Windows 10 Education targeted to schools (including staff, administrators, teachers and students) and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise, which will be a complete solution from Microsoft for business customers. There will be a Windows 10 IoT Core edition as well.

"There will also be versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industry devices like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals and industrial robotics and Windows 10 IoT Core for small footprint, low cost devices like gateways... We are making strong progress with Windows 10, and we are on track to make it available this summer. And because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses," Prophet added.

The Top 7 New Features in Windows 10 for Phones

If you've been paying attention to the tech news, you've heard about the great new features Windows 10 brings to desktop PCs: The Start Menu's return, virtual desktops, Cortana, holograms, Continuum, the Action Center, the New Photo app. But Windows 10 brings some pretty sweet new capabilities to smartphones, too.

The new phone capabilities in Windows 10 may not be making tons headlines, but users of the critically acclaimed yet under-adopted phone OS are getting some pretty darn important and useful new capabilities with Windows 10. Sure, they're not as sexy or radical as those listed above, but if you've ever wanted to enter text with your voice or see more quick actions from the pulldown at the top of the screen, they may be even more important for your everyday life than those headline-grabbing capabilities.

Perhaps the most significant thing that Windows 10 will bring to phone users isn't exactly a feature, but rather the combination of the phone and desktop operating systems into one. Sort of. Of course, the phone version will always need different interface input methods than the desktop version, and things like notifications and the Action Center, while they'll exist in both form factors, will differ. But the combination is real. Especially welcome will be the phone's ability to run Universal apps designed for both desktop and phone. Fluid transitions between desktop and phone for Office productivity apps and Skype communications will also be benefits.

Windows 10 Technical Preview has up to this point been available for a very small subset of Windows Phone models, but Microsoft's Operating Systems Group General Manager Gabe Aul noted in a Windows Blog post that the number of phones models you can install the preview on will grow to over 30 in the next code update. They're all Lumia phones, though: Sorry HTC M8 Windows Phone Free at Amazon users.

Windows 10 Powered Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Tipped To Arrive in October 2015

Even though the Surface Pro 3 continues to sell well in the premium tablet market, it's performance may leave a lot to be desired. A rumored Surface Pro 4 may join the recently unveiled Surface 3 sometime in October 2015. To ensure that the next-generation Surface tablet is desirable for a longer period of time, Microsoft is apparently preparing to launch the Surface Pro 4 full of the latest tech, if the alleged rumors are to be believed.

According to the latest report from Inquisitor, the upcoming Surface Pro 4 won't reach the retail market until October, when Windows 10 is released. The top-notch hybrid computer device is supposed to pack some serious specifications, according to Venture Capital Post. The Surface Pro 4 will reportedly sport a 4K screen, Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processor options, 16GB of RAM and a working stylus. However, these specifications are yet to be verified.

Earlier reports that surfaced in the beginning of this year said that the new Surface Pro 3 would be launched in the month of June or maximum by July. Just a few days ago, Microsoft introduced the Surface 3 in the U.S., a 10.1-inch tablet that costs $499 (approximately Rs. 31,437). Like the Surface Pro 3, the newly launched tablet will be upgradable to the Windows 10 OS. We're sure to hear more about the Surface Pro 4 in the coming months. Apparently, Apple is also expected to announce its much talked about iPad Pro in the second half of 2015. Both devices are said to target the enterprise market.

WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature Coming to Windows Phone Soon

The WhatsApp voice calling feature has been confirmed to be in development for the Windows Phone platform.WhatsApp support team in an emailed reply to a Windows Phone user revealed the news and said, "WhatsApp Calling for your platform [Windows Phone] is still in the works."

Unfortunately, the team didn't specify any exact time-frame for the release of WhatsApp voice calling for Windows Phone users. The WhatsApp Support team further added, "We cannot comment on any future release timelines but we appreciate your interest in WhatsApp Calling." The emailed response from WhatsApp was first reported by WM Poweruser.

While WhatsApp voice calling feature is now available to all Android users; the feature is yet to reach iOS users. WhatsApp Co-Founder, Brian Acton, at a recent eventconfirmed that the voice calling feature will be rolled out to iOS users in a "couple weeks".

Acton while speaking at Facebook's F8 developers' conference revealed that WhatsApp team "refined and iterated voice calling" last year before launching it on Android. Unfortunately, Acton did not reveal an exact time-frame for the release of the voice calling feature on iOS.

It will be interesting to see whether the Windows Phone users will get the voice-calling feature ahead of iOS users. To recall, WhatsApp for Android users started receiving the voice calling featurewithout any activation or invites late in March. To get the feature on their Android smartphones, users had to download the latest version of WhatsApp from its website. The feature appeared on WhatsApp version 2.12.5 in some smartphones, but most people needed the latest 2.12.19 version to get WhatsApp calling. When the feature was activated on an Android smartphone, users noticed a new three-tab layout featuring Calls, Chats and Contacts. One could head to the Calls tab, tap the phone icon, and pick a contact to make a WhatsApp call.
