Mobile Gaming Spending Outpaces Handheld Consoles

With our phones these days being more than capable of playing games on them, we wouldn’t be surprised if more gamers started to turn to their phones instead of their handheld consoles for games. In fact according to a recent report by the IDC and App Annie (via Cult of Mac), it has been revealed that spending on mobile gaming has increased.

Not only has it increased but it seems that it is way more than what gamers have been spending on traditional handheld consoles. As you can see in the graph above, it shows that spending on mobile games has increased from the previous year for both iOS and Android. However when it comes to handheld games, the levels have remained almost the same.

In fact the graph shows that even back in 2014, mobile gaming outpaced that of handheld consoles and that in 2015, that gap just got wider. The report also found that spending on multiplayer gaming was higher than that of single player games. “Among the Top 50 mobile games, multiplayer games accounted for ~60% of consumer spending despite only contributing ~30% of downloads in 1Q15.”
Granted there are titles on handheld consoles that aren’t available for mobile, but that’s starting to change. Nintendo announced earlier this year that they will be partnering with Japanese company DeNA to start creating more mobile games.

App Indexing: Why It Matters For The Future Of Search

Following Google announcement, SEOs and webmasters focused on getting their websites “mobile friendly” by the April 21st deadline. Yet “more mobile-friendly websites in search results” was only half of Google’s announcement. The other half was this: “More relevant app content in search results.”

What exactly is app indexing? Why is it important? Should SEOs and marketers even care, especially if they don’t sell an Android app?

You’re about to find out. In today’s mobile search climate, app indexing signals a shift in the direction of search, and marketers need to pay attention.

What Is App Indexing?

According to Google, “App Indexing lets Google index apps just like websites. Deep links to your Android app appear in Google Search results, letting users get to your native mobile experience quickly, landing exactly on the right content within your app.”

What does this mean in practical terms?

If you perform a Google search on a mobile device, the search results will include not just web pages, but also relevant content that is within an app.

Let’s say you’re on a mobile device doing a Google search. The most relevant content for your movie query is located in the IMDb app. In addition to surfacing a link to the IMDb website, Google will show you an IMDb app result, like this:

Is Search App Indexing New?

Not really. Google introduced App Indexing back in October 2013. The idea was simple: By enabling deep linking within their apps, webmasters could allow Googlebot to index app content just like web page content. That way, Android users with your app installed would have the option to go directly to your app content from within Google search results (as shown above).

Though it isn’t new, there have been several major developments in app indexing capabilities since it was initially announced. For example, Google has expanded app indexing to include results from apps that are not installed on your phone (thereby assisting users with app discovery). And, just this week, the search giant announced that it would soon be bringing app indexing to iOS devices as well.

Bing Does It, Too

Google doesn’t have a leg up on the competition as far as this particular technology is concerned. Bing allows Windows phone users to access app content in search results, too.

What’s the biggest difference? Sheer numbers. Bing has a marginal share of global search, paralleled by a marginal share of the smartphone market.

Why Does This Even Matter?

So, let’s get down to the big question: Does this matter?

Yes. The fact of the matter is that mobile search now includes app results — and their inclusion in these search results only seems to be growing.

I think that this signals a more important trend in the evolution of mobile search. The indexing net is ever expanding. Could it be that, with the rise of wearable technology, Google can index even more information in algorithmic search results (e.g., location, health status, heart rate)? How will this information be available?

There are plenty of questions that surround the issue:

What else will be indexed in the future?

How will this affect the search results for businesses that do not have Android (and soon, iOS) apps?

Will creating an app enhance a business’s search presence?

How will this drive mobile usage upward? Obviously, Google doesn’t index the apps on my desktop.

If it’s doing it for mobile, how will this shift overall usage in favor of mobile devices?
A few things are certain.

This improves the search experience for mobile users. App indexing signals the a broadening of search potential. The more content that is indexed, the greater the user’s search experience and results.

Google drives higher engagement with apps. As Google’s indexing page explains, “App Indexing helps you drive usage of your app through Google. Deep links to your app appear in Google Search results on Android so users can get to your native mobile experience quickly and easily.”

Google remains in control. GigaOM explains that the expansion of in-app search will also help Google sell more ads and hold down the competition.

What Should You Do?

There are two main takeaways. The first is tactical. The second is strategic.

Get your app indexed. If your business has an Android app, you need it to be indexed. There are plenty of ways to find out how to do this. The best source that I’ve found with step-by-step instructions is found in the Codelabs.

Note: App indexing technology isn’t widely available to iOS app developers yet, but Google has outlined some first steps you can take to prepare here.

Grow your mobile presence. On a strategic front, mobile should become the new obsession for marketers and technology workers, regardless of their specific function.

Conversion specialists should be tuned into the conversion optimization potential for mobile. SEOs must identify the areas where mobile results can be improved. CTOs must strategize new ways to gain traction among mobile users. Developers must identify touch points between mobile apps and sites.

At a minimum level, keep mobile front and center in your thinking. Mobile is the present and future of marketing.

Conclusion

Clearly, app indexing is s step forward in the dominance of mobile search and mobile usage.

SEOs, developers, webmasters, and marketers need to know this. More importantly, they need to understand that mobile search and marketing is not a static industry. It is in motion. We are moving towards a bigger mobile universe, an expansion of indexation potential, and a greater need to optimize mobile in every way possible.

Dropped iPhone 5 films its watery descent to the ocean floor

An iPhone 5 user from San Diego almost lost his Apple handset after accidentally dropping it into the sea.

“My brother tried throwing my phone to me,” Gregory Papadin told British newspaper The Mirror. “It ended up going straight under water and sank to bottom of the ocean floor.”

Papadin says the underwater pressure proved too much for him and his brother to swim down and retrieve the phone, but the captain of the ship he was renting was able to dive in and get it — to discover that the phone had not only managed to survive the episode, but actually film its own watery descent.

Check out the video below:

The iPhone 5 in question was protected by a LifeProof case, described by its manufacturers as being capable of surviving “anything you throw at [it].”
The company claims its waterproof cases will protect the iPhone down to depths of around 6.6 feet, but judging by this video it may have been selling itself a bit short.

EA’s Mobile-Gaming Chief Steps Down

The head of Electronic Arts EA -0.59%’ mobile-games division is leaving the company after a 20-year stint, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Frank Gibeau managed EA’s portfolio of mobile franchises, including “The Simpsons: Tapped Out,” “Plants vs. Zombies,” and “The Sims,” in addition to overseeing the development of new mobile intellectual property.  His last day was Monday.

Mobile gaming increasingly is a key part of EA’s strategy for continued growth. Earlier this month, EA said mobile revenue, which mainly comes from purchases made inside of apps, rose 22% to $150 million in its fiscal fourth quarter. Still, the company’s mobile games aren’t regularly among the top-grossing games in Apple Inc. and Google Inc.’s app stores.

“Mobile games continue to be a core focus for EA, and thanks to our incredibly talented mobile teams, our position has never been stronger,” EA Chief Executive Andrew Wilson said in a statement. He declined to provide insight into Gibeau’s next move or comment on a possible replacement. In the meantime, the company’s mobile division will report to Wilson.

Netflix To Roll Out A New, More Immersive Web Interface Starting In June

Netflix confirms today that it will roll out a new user interface on the web to all users worldwide beginning next month. A number of Netflix customers are already seeing the updated look-and-feel, however, according to various reports. The interface, which was previously demonstrated at CES and Mobile World Congress, brings the design of Netflix’s website more in line with what users today see on mobile phones, tablets, on gaming consoles and on other streaming media players, like Roku.

The most notable aspect to the new design is that it eliminates the slower, scrolling carousels for content discovery in favor of an updated look with larger thumbnails in each section which can be clicked on in order to expand a detail screen showing additional information about the title in question.

Here, you’re able to see a movie or episode’s title, description, running time and more, and can add the title to your watchlist. In the older web interface, you have to hover over a thumbnail of the show or film in order to see more information, but to see the same level of detail, you’d typically have to click a small “More Info” link to be taken to a new screen.

That process of moving between two screens slowed down users’ ability to find content they wanted to watch, as did the older navigation which required you to click on arrows to move through a carousel of titles whose thumbnails resembled movie posters.

The overall design is one that’s more immersive and presents more information to users, much like Netflix’s interface on televisions.

The updated look should please most web users because of the speed increases when it comes to browsing, though some are complaining that the changes mean you’ll now see fewer titles on a single screen thanks to the elimination of the vertical thumbnails which took up less space. This desire to see more content on one screen is something that has sparked a lot interest in recent days – there was even a popular Netflix hack called “God Mode” released earlier this year which lets you see all the movies and TV shows at once with no need to click around on the interface.

That someone had gone to the trouble to “fix” the Netflix interface by way of a browser bookmarklet indicated that the online experience left a lot to be desired for many users.

Netflix didn’t say how many customers would see the updated interface before the global launch in June, but it’s clear from reports that the rollout is already underway.

The move is a significant one for the company as it represents the first user interface update for PC users since 2011, Netflix notes.

It’s also part of Netflix’s larger plan to streamline its interface for customers in a multi-screen world – the company had said earlier this year that customers expect the same experience on TVs, phones and tablets, and it even introduced a “Recommended TV” program offering guidelines to TV manufacturers.

For reference, here’s the old PC interface for comparison purposes:

Google and Skrillex Want You to Buy This Android Phone Case

Google is creating a series of limited-edition cases for Android phones, and its first collaboration is with producer and DJ Skrillex.

Skrillex created three intergalactic-themed cases for his collection, which are on sale now in the Google store for $40, and will be available until the end of June or until supplies last.

Slap one on your Nexus 5, Nexus 6 $590.00 at Amazon, Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung Galaxy S6, or Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and the cases will deliver a space-themed wallpaper pulled from satellites that Google and Skrillex launched into the stratosphere. Yep.

"During the day, the live wallpaper displays images of earth and, at night, it shows constellations visible from your location," Google said in a blog post.

A video clip (below) shows Skrillex launching that satellite (named after his dog Nanou) in the desert. (According to Wired, 13 tiny satellites were launched in total.) When Google is finished with Nanou, "a lucky fan will win the autographed satellite in an upcoming giveaway," the company said.

In addition to space themes, the cases also feature a button on the back that can be customized to go directly to the phone feature of your choice: camera, home screen, or even the Skrillex website, if you're so inclined. You'll also get VIP access to Skrillex content.

How consumers behave on ecommerce apps

Here’s some advice on how best to take advantage of the latest consumer data around app usage.

Ecommerce apps sometimes get a rough press, but it’s more to do with the retailers that provide an app instead of offering a decent mobile optimised web experience.

It’s annoying when you want to visit a retailer on your mobile and you’re either redirected immediately to an app download, or are provided a non-mobile optimised experience.

It’s inconvenient, wastes the consumer’s time and will only encourage them to take their business elsewhere.

However if you can provide a perfectly optimised mobile experience alongside a brilliant functional app, then you’ll have all bases covered. Some consumers prefer apps, some people prefer the mobile web. It’s all down to context, behaviour and location.

The value of having an app

Mobile apps achieve many positive things for retailers. It is often the regular users of apps who are a retailer’s most loyal brand advocates. They encourage repeat visits and purchases while driving customer loyalty. Users can use an app to save favourite items and payment details, adding to the convenience.

Just having the retailer icon there on a mobile is a good way to remain at the forefront of a consumer’s mind and is also easy to access at any time. Push notifications can be sent every so often to highlight special offers or new products that are relevant to the user’s interests.

Apps are also an effective way to operate a loyalty card or scheme. However loyalty schemes aren’t the only way apps can be used to tie-up the instore experience.

Beacons in high street branches can send notifications to the user when they approach or enter the store. Unique, personalised special offers or discounts can be delivered via the app, instore maps or inventories can be accessed, shopping lists or wish lists can be integrated. All this data can also be used by the retailer to properly measure attribution and further improve the customer experience.

Consumer behaviour

Now we get into the nitty-gritty. A new study by Poq Studio App, Commerce Report Q1 2015 (registration required), has revealed some interesting findings regarding customer behaviour on apps.

It was found that only 19% of the UK’s top 50 retailers offer a shopping app, but those that do report an increasing proportion of online revenue, with some retailers suggesting their apps generate over 10% of their online revenue.

Within this proportion it was found that:

The Sunday contradiction

Retail apps receive the highest average traffic per day on Sundays, but also show the lowest conversion rates. Sundays were also found to be the days of the week where the ‘add to wishlist’ function was used the most. It seems like Sundays are perfect for window shopping.

This also highlights the need for retailers to have a wishlist function in their apps.

iOS users convert the most on Fridays, Android users on Saturdays

For iOS apps the highest conversion rates are on Fridays, followed by Tuesdays, and Mondays. Android apps, on the other hand, show the highest conversion rates on Saturdays,

Fridays, and Mondays. iOS app conversion rates are generally 1.2 times higher on Fridays, and Android app conversion rates are generally 1.2 times higher on Saturdays, than they are on the average day.

Therefore if you’re going to run any kind of promotion, especially if it’s for less-popular items, these are the best days for this. Perhaps consider app-exclusive promotions or opportunities for cross or upselling.

Most app transactions are made after 7pm

Even though UK consumers provide the most traffic during their lunch hours, spiking at noon and dropping off at 1pm, more conversions occur between 8pm and 10pm.

So lunchtimes are best for new content and evenings are best for sending push notifications.

Nintendo World Championships Return After 25 Years

In 1990 Nintendo had its first and only World Championships, but the battle for Mario-related glory returns this June.

Yes, the Nintendo World Championships are coming back after 25 years and the qualifying rounds will be held at Best Buy locations around the U.S. on May 30. Regional winners will move on to the championship, which will be held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on June 14.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed which games will be included in the tournament, but the original contest included portions of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. So chances are there will be some updates to that line up.

The first championship was inspired in part by The Wizard, a 1989 film starring Fred Savage, Christian Slater and Jenny Lewis.

Check out the promotional video below showing Nintendo America COO Reggie Fils-Aime announcing his idea to bring back the games and compete in them himself. He changes his mind of course, but not after some serious gamer preparation.

Uber bids for Nokia's mapping service: NYT

Ride-hailing service Uber has submitted a bid for Nokia Oyj's (NOK1V.HE) map business, HERE, for as much as $3 billion, the New York Times reported, citing people with knowledge of the offer.

Finland's Nokia said last month it had started a strategic review for HERE, a competitor to Google Maps, after announcing a takeover of network equipment rival Alcatel-Lucent (ALUA.PA).

Uber is competing against a consortium of automakers, including BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the newspaper said, citing people with knowledge of the offer.

The German automakers are teaming up with the Chinese search engine Baidu on the offer, the report said. (nyti.ms/1QrdZYU)

Uber declined to comment on the matter.

The newspaper said a private equity firm has also bid and that Nokia is expected to announce the sale of HERE by the end of May.

The Top 7 New Features in Windows 10 for Phones

If you've been paying attention to the tech news, you've heard about the great new features Windows 10 brings to desktop PCs: The Start Menu's return, virtual desktops, Cortana, holograms, Continuum, the Action Center, the New Photo app. But Windows 10 brings some pretty sweet new capabilities to smartphones, too.

The new phone capabilities in Windows 10 may not be making tons headlines, but users of the critically acclaimed yet under-adopted phone OS are getting some pretty darn important and useful new capabilities with Windows 10. Sure, they're not as sexy or radical as those listed above, but if you've ever wanted to enter text with your voice or see more quick actions from the pulldown at the top of the screen, they may be even more important for your everyday life than those headline-grabbing capabilities.

Perhaps the most significant thing that Windows 10 will bring to phone users isn't exactly a feature, but rather the combination of the phone and desktop operating systems into one. Sort of. Of course, the phone version will always need different interface input methods than the desktop version, and things like notifications and the Action Center, while they'll exist in both form factors, will differ. But the combination is real. Especially welcome will be the phone's ability to run Universal apps designed for both desktop and phone. Fluid transitions between desktop and phone for Office productivity apps and Skype communications will also be benefits.

Windows 10 Technical Preview has up to this point been available for a very small subset of Windows Phone models, but Microsoft's Operating Systems Group General Manager Gabe Aul noted in a Windows Blog post that the number of phones models you can install the preview on will grow to over 30 in the next code update. They're all Lumia phones, though: Sorry HTC M8 Windows Phone Free at Amazon users.

Page through our slideshow, linked from the main image above and below, to see what's in store for Windows 10 phone users, and read our Hands On With Windows 10 for Phones for even more background. And don’t forget to check out our Windows 10 hub page.

FADE AND COLOR TOOLS COME TO INSTAGRAM’S ANDROID APP

The competition may have grown fiercer since Facebook acquired Instagram in 2013, but no other photo-sharing service comes close to its pervasiveness. Instagram has 300 million installs and 75 million daily users. Perhaps Instagram’s complacency is the reason it has been slow to add new features, or maybe the reason is more philosophical. Whatever the cause, we seem to be witnessing a reversal. Instagram today announced two new additions to its suite of editing tools — “Fade” and “Color.”

Related: Instagram users, multi-page “carousel ads” coming your way

Fade, as you might guess, mutes colors and softens lines. The look is distinctly old-school darkroom, and is adjusted with Instagram’s familiar slider mechanism. Color presents a range of hues with which to tint images, but lacks the aforementioned fine-tuning tool  — if you were hoping for nuance, you’ll be disappointed.

Color and Fade will make their way to Android devices first, as the Instagram version 6.19.0 will roll out through the Google Play Store today. Meanwhile, iOS users will receive an equivalent update “in a few days.”

The new effects follow a December refresh which added five new filters — Slumber, Crema, Ludwig, Aden, and Perpetua — and a filter management tool. The earlier summer update introduced tools to change filter intensity and fine-tune lighting levels with brightness, contrast, highlight, and shadows.

The changes come at a time when Facebook is attempting to boost Instagram’s profitability. The social network initially worked gradually towards recouping its $1 billion investment by slowly incorporating ads into users’ feeds, but has recently become more assertive. The year 2013 saw the integration of video ads, and last month, Facebook announced “carousel ads” for Instagram, tappable interactive ads that link to outside apps and websites.

The degree to which Facebook values Instragram’s ad units is no more evident than in the case of the “Uploader for Instagram” app shutdown earlier this week. The app, which allowed Mac users to upload photos directly to Instagram, was pulled by its 17-year-old developer after he received a letter from the company demanding its removal from the Mac App Store. While the app allegedly violated Instagram’s Terms of Service, its potentially graver crime was skirting the ads which populate the mobile clients.

Instagram’s popularity is unlikely to diminish anytime soon, and the updates are very much welcome, but Facebook will someday have to reconcile the Instagram community’s culture — pure, unblemished showcasing of creativity — with its shareholder imperative for profit.

Facebook brings mobile Messenger app to desktops

Facebook released a new version of its Messenger communication service, but it wasn't an update for the company's smartphone or tablet app. Instead, Facebook launched Messenger.com, a website making the service available for desktop and laptop computers.

The social network has been expanding its Messenger platform steadily over the past year, creating a communication service out of what began as a way to chat with friends on Facebook's website. Facebook said more than 600 million people use the app each month.

Last month, Facebook added the ability for other users to send items like music, photos and videos to each other through Messenger by integrating apps like ESPN and the Weather Channel. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's co-founder and CEO, said at the time that Facebook has shifted its business to focus on mobile apps, and to build the services behind them.

This latest move could help elevate Messenger into a social network of its own, instead of being merely a way to send missives to friends and family. It also offers similar capabilities to WhatsApp, a chat service Facebook bought last year for $19 billion. A version of WhatsApp for desktop computers came out in January.

Here's Everything We Know About Microsoft Corporation's Rumored Mobile Payments Platform

Well, it looks as if Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) might soon to be added to the growing list of companies that are establishing their own mobile payments platform. Ars Technica reported this week that Microsoft has filed for licenses to transmit money in all 50 states and the U.S. territories.

This come on the heels of Apple's own mobile payment platform launch just a few months ago, as well as recent announcements of payment systems from Samsung and Android. But while those systems have either launched, or soon will, Microsoft's system is still just a rumor.

Here's everything we know about it so far:

1. Microsoft's mobile payment platform might be called "Microsoft Payments."

Banking consultant Faisal Khan recently tracked down some information on Microsoft's possible system and found the official money transfer license filing for "Microsoft Payments," I've included my own screenshot below from the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System & Registry, also known as the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System. (Yes, the NMLS literally has two names. It should really do something about that.)

Source: NMLS.

2. Microsoft already has cleared some official hurdles.

The company has already filed the official paperwork to be a money transmitter in the U.S. and some of its territories. Microsoft has also submitted a form to be a money services business. This sounds pretty official, right?

3. One state has already given Microsoft the go-ahead.

Idaho was the first state to grant Microsoft permission to act as a money transmitter. Idaho, you're so tech savvy!

4. Windows 10 for mobile will be capable of handling payments.

Microsoft's newest OS for its phones will include host card emulators, or HCEs, which are used in tandem with near-field communication, or NFC, to make mobile payments. The HCEs are the secure element of the credit card transaction. As Windows Central pointed out, Windows 10 for mobile won't require any secure SIMs from carriers, which means users can be on any network and employ the rumored payments systems.

5. Windows 10 "tap to pair" could be used for payments.

At the company's WinHEC 2015 conference last month, Microsoft said Windows 10 for mobile will have a "tap to pair" feature allowing a smartphone to easily pair with things like a large display monitor, via NFC. This same tech could easily be used for a tap-to-pay feature in mobile devices.

Why Microsoft needs this

Apple's new in-store mobile payment system has already been released to the public and works on the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and Apple Watch. Meanwhile, Samsung Pay will debut later this summer. The two companies are trying to lock customers into their opposing ecosystems. As I pointed out in an earlier article, each payment system has its benefits.

If that weren't enough, a group of retailers have created its own mobile payments platform, called CurrentC, to take on Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. The technology was created by the Merchant Customer Exchange, and its members include Rite Aid, CVS, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and others. You might remember that Rite Aid and CVS stopped allowing Apple Pay payments just a week after its launch, hinting that retailers were eager to take their own mobile payment route. CurrentC will officially launch later this year, likely around the same time as Samsung Pay.

At this point, Microsoft needs to launch its own payments platform, if only because everyone else is doing it (peer pressure can be a good thing). Microsoft has already falls far short of Samsung's and Apple's smartphone prowess, and the company can't give potential smartphone customers any more reasons not to choose a Windows mobile device. With Apple and Samsung already well on their way in the mobile payments space, Microsoft needs to jump on this opportunity now before it falls even further behind.

Samsung launches new 'enterprise friendly' smartphones

Samsung's new Galaxy smartphones are more enterprise-friendly, with heightened security measures for business users, the manufacturer said on Monday.

At the official Australian launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, Prasad Gokhale, VP of IT and Mobile at Samsung Electronics Australia, promised the new smartphones would provide better features for Samsung’s enterprise users.

Gokhale claimed an issue with previous models was they neglected to address the needs of enterprise consumers. The smartphones also provide access to Samsung's KNOX Workspace software, which offers multi-layered protection, with two-factor biometric authentication for authorised device access.

“We have worked tirelessly with our partners like Microsoft, and MDM suppliers like AirWatch and MobileIron, Blackberry and Oracle, and many more to make sure that our devices are powered by KNOX to provide… a great enterprise-grade security solution,” said Gokhale.

“The GS6 and GS6 edge smartphones represent a pivotal step for the Galaxy range in evolving the category as a whole, marking a clear shift in how we deliver exceptional smartphones for Australians."

Steven Sherry, VP of enterprise and small medium business for Samsung Australia said the inclusion of KNOX Workplace provides an option for users who want one phone for personal and business use.

“Once upon a time, people would use one phone for work and one phone for personal use, and that’s just not the case anymore,” he said. “This level of security allows users to store any sensitive work data or enterprise-specific apps inside the KNOX workspace, with password protection, providing users with a secure channel for corporate resources.”

Other benefits to enterprise users include the new lighter and stronger design, wireless charging and faster charging capabilities, with new adapters providing at least four hours of battery life from just 10 minutes of charging.

There is also now a built-in smart manager platform that tracks battery life, data usage and malware status. Featured apps, or 'Galaxy Gifts' include Uber, Microsoft OneDrive, Evernote, Kindle, The Australian newspaper, QuickFlix, and Samsung’s new music streaming service, Milk.

Both smartphones will go on sale in Australia on Friday April 10, ranging from $999 for the S6 and $1149 for the S6 Edge. The smartphones will be available on plans with major mobile phone carriers, with 32GB to 128GB of storage, depending on price.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge launch in Australia

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones are now available for pre-order in Australia and are set to ship to consumers on April 10, with all three major mobile carriers announcing major revisions to their plan structures ahead of the launch.

Both smartphones were unveiled at the Mobile World Congress earlier this month, and feature an iPhone-like metal and glass design and wireless charging. However, both phones exclude several key features from their predecessor, including wireless charging and removable batteries.

Purchased outright, the Galaxy S6 will cost $999 for the 32 gigabyte version, $1149 for the 64 gigabyte version or $1299 for 128 gigabytes. The Galaxy S6 Edge, which features a screen that curves over the sides of the device, costs $1149 for 32 gigabytes or $1299 for 64 gigabytes.

After Optus announced earlier this month it is bundling a six-month Netflix subscription with various broadband and mobile packages, Telstra has revealed it will bundle a six-month Presto subscription on some of its mobile plans from April 9. Vodafone, meanwhile, bundles a Spotify subscription on its plans.

Telstra has also overhauled its residential and business plans ahead of the launch, including boosting the amount of included data on its Easy Share Business plans to between 1.5 gigabytes at $65 per month, through to 10 gigabytes at $135 per month.

Telstra takes on rivals by tackling bill shock, data usage

Telstra has cut the cost to millions of mobile phone customers who exceed their monthly download allowances, offering cheaper blocks of extra data to prevent bill shock and stop rivals Singtel-Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia from having an advantage.

Telstra users previously paid either $15 for a 1GB data pack or 3¢ per megabyte ($30 a gigabyte) when they exceeded their monthly allowances. But the telco giant has followed its Singtel-Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia in charging mobile customers $10 per extra gigabyte when they go over their limit.

It will be optionally available to 6.5 million Telstra customers who have mobile handset plans on contracts with the telco.

The move to launch the "extra data" system from May 12 came days after Telstra moved to more than double the download allowances on some mobile plans in an effort to fight off rising competition from Optus and Vodafone Australia.

Telstra retail group executive Gordon Ballantyne said his version of the service was better because it would apply to all contracted mobile customers and not just users who were new or recontracting.

'PEACE OF MIND'

"Typically, 10 percent of our base at some point in time will overrun their allowance," he said. "We want to give peace of mind to customers who use data... So I actually think this stimulates the market."

Optus has publicly said about 32 per cent of customers on plans that can get extra data for $10 per gigabyte, typically do so each month.

The service could hurt the telco's revenue because there will be fewer customers paying excess data charges. Analysts have warned Telstra's launch of new mobile initiatives could hurt profits as it fights to maintain its market dominance against resurgent competitors.

But Mr Ballantyne said he expected Telstra's increase to be smaller thanks to its recent push to boost data allowances.

"I don't see this materially impacting revenue because I think it'll encourage customers and we'll see an expansion in the market of those revenue pools," he said. "If we act on what [customers] want, then revenue will follow.

"We just see exponential demand for video and those other services."

VITAL REVENUE SOURCE

Telstra's mobile division is a vital source of cash for the company. In the six months ending December 31, 2014, it generated $5.3 billion in revenue. It has been a strong source of customer growth at a time when users are switching away from lucrative fixed-line phone services.

Telstra also remains the dominant mobile player with 16.4 million subscribers on its network compared with the 9.39 million at Optus and 5.3 million at Vodafone Hutchison Australia.

But it is coming under increasing threat from rivals who have improved their networks and services to steal customers. Vodafone Australia told Fairfax Media it was aiming to get the least number of complaints per customer lodged with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman by the end of 2015 in what would be a major turnaround for the company.

Optus and Vodafone Australia have ramped up network investments and offered much larger download allowances in an effort to attract customers ahead of the highly anticipated launch of Samsung's Galaxy S6 device from April 10.

Mr Ballantyne said Telstra was "paying attention" to its competitors and was responding accordingly.

"Given we've grown our share consistently over the last five years I think we'll continue to pay attention to the competition and grow share," he said.
