How to create and restore an image backup in Windows 10

How do you recover from a dead internal hard drive or SSD? Or if Windows becomes so messed up it's useless or even unbootable?
You can always reinstall Windows from scratch. But after that you must reinstall all of your programs, and then reconfigure everything.
But if you have a relatively recent image backup handy, you can recover Windows, your programs, and your configurations with a few minutes’ work.

The difference between file and image backups

An image backup copies everything on your drive, including partitions and the boot sector. It’s the only way to back up your Windows installation properly, with all of your programs and settings. Don’t confuse this with a file backup, which only copies your data files (documents, photos, spreadsheets, and so on).
Of the two, the file backup is by far the most important. You can always reinstall Windows and your applications, but you can’t reinstall your business records or your family photos. You should back up data files daily. If you’re not regularly backing them up, see my 3 easy steps for getting this going.
By comparison, an image backup simply saves you the major hassle of reinstalling everything. You only really need to back it up two to four times a year.

Creating your image backup

Start by plugging in your external hard drive. Make sure Windows can access it.
For some strange reason, Microsoft created a perfectly good image backup tool, then hid it. Here’s how you get to the image backup program:
1.   Right-click the Start button and select Control Panel.
2.   When the Control Panel window is up, select the Search field in the upper-right corner and type file history.
3.   Click the title File History.
4.   Click System Image Backup in the lower-left corner.
Congratulations. You found the secret image backup tool.
Click Create a system image in the left panel. This brings up a wizard for setting up the backup. On the first page, tell the wizard you want the backup on your plugged-in external drive.
On the wizard’s second page, select the partitions you want in this image backup. Or don’t; the default will probably be right.
On the Wizard’s next and final page, check to make sure the settings are right, then click Start backup.

Microsoft Surface Phone - everything we THINK we know so far

2017 is set to be a big year for Microsoft, as the company prepares a number of updates around its Windows 10 software, as well as several new hardware releases - including the long-rumoured Surface Phone.
Reports of a Microsoft-built smartphone have been circulating for some time, leading to speculation that the device could be launching soon.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently raised hopes among Microsoft fans that the device may be in development when he hinted last month that a Surface Phone could be "the ultimate mobile device”.
But how much do we know about this possibly ground-breaking device?

Design and build

As it proved with the release of the Surface Pro hybrid and Surface Book laptop, Microsoft is not afraid to go their own way when it comes to designing a new product from scratch.
Therefore, it’s expected that the Surface Phone will be rather different to many other smartphones out today, and bear little resemblance to the company’s previous Windows Phone devices.
Among the rumours surrounding the Surface Phone’s design is that it could feature a similar build to the company's existing Surface Pro and Surface Book devices.
Photos leaked online earlier this month claiming to show off the Surface Phone for the first time, appeared to confirm this, suggesting that Microsoft wants all its hardware devices to blend together.
If Microsoft wants the Surface Phone to be a truly premium device, we're expecting an all-metal body, complete with curved glass display, much like the recent flagships from the likes of Samsung and HTC.
However, the device could also feature something truly eye-catching, as a patent filing granted to Microsoft this month revealed that the company is working on a device that would be able to fold upon itself.
From the standard tablet-shaped display, the device would feature a hinged design that would allow it to fold and create a screen the size of a smartphone.
That means that you could be watching a film on the main tablet screen, then quickly pause and fold the device into a phone to make a call or reply to a text message.
This would all be controlled using an updated version of Microsoft's Surface Pen stylus, giving you precise control with just a tap.

Hardware

If the Surface Phone is truly looking to be a fully-fledged work and leisure device, it will need some powerful hardware inside.
Among the other rumours concerning the device is that it will use Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, which was revealed back at CES 2017 earlier this month.
This would put the Surface Phone among the most powerful smartphones available on the market today.
In order to support this strong processor, the Surface Phone would require a sizeable battery, especially if Microsoft wants the device to be an all-day work machine.
The iPhone 7 Plus currently packs in a 2900mAh battery, with the Samsung Galaxy S7 also powered by an 3000mAh unit, so expect something along those lines.

Software

Microsoft is hard at work on a new version of Windows 10, with the free Creators Update download set to be released in April.
But a Surface Phone would require an entirely new software platform to run on, especially now that Microsoft appears to have shuttered plans for Windows 10 Mobile.
It's unlikely that Microsoft would opt for a version of Android or iOS to power its new device, as companies such as Nokia and BlackBerry have chosen to do, as it has previously shown a strong desire to build all its own components.
Alternatively, the new device could run a more powerful 64-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile, with Microsoft packing in a number of new improvements and features to make its mobile software easier to operate.
Continuum – Windows 10's ability to run a desktop PC-like environment on a large screen from a smartphone – could bring a new level of productivity for the phone.
Including the ability to connect Surface Phone to an external keyboard, mouse and display to run full desktop applications like Office 2016 or Adobe Photoshop would also be of interest to business customers.

Release date and price

So when might we see the Surface Phone?
Microsoft is rather busy at the moment preparing the release of Windows 10 Creators Update, with the new software upgrade set to arrive in April.
This means that the Surface Phone may not arrive until later in 2017.
Given the company's previous release cycles, it looks that an October 2017 launch could be the most likely.
As for price, given the launches of the previous Surface devices, Microsoft will be keen to promote its smartphone as a premium product.
This could well mean a premium price tag too - with current flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7 costing around £539 and £579 respectively, we’re expecting a price somewhere in this area.

Apple updates GarageBand and Logic Pro X with iCloud File Sharing and Touch Bar support

Apple has made its music editing software more robust.
On Wednesday, Apple updated GarageBand for iOS and Pro Logic X for macOS, giving users the ability to share projects between the two music editing apps via iCloud File Sharing. This means that users can record music and share the recordings over the cloud to be edited in either app. Previously, you could import GarageBand recordings into Logic Pro X, but not vice versa. GarageBand has been designed to be more consumer-friendly, whereas Logic Pro X caters to the pro level.
In addition, GarageBand 2.2 for iOS got a redesigned sound browser, multi-take recording, and advanced studio effects like distortion and pitch correction. GarageBand now also has the Alchemy software synthesizer that was previously available on Logic Pro X.
As for Logic Pro X, the 10.3 update gives new MacBook Pro owners the ability to use the Touch Bar. Launching Logic Pro X will activate the Touch Bar, so that you’re able to view projects in a timeline, as well as tinker with a music track by changing the volume, adjusting the controls, and selecting different software instruments.
These new software updates are free for existing users. Logic Pro X for Mac costs $200 and GarageBand is $5, although it comes pre-installed on the latest iOS devices.
Why this matters: GarageBand on iOS and Logic Pro X for macOS started out by catering to different types of users—consumer versus pro. But with this new update that enables iCloud File Sharing between the two, Apple is hoping that GarageBand could give Logic Pro X users a mobile-friendly way for on-the-go editing.

Receiving this rainbow emoji will crash your iPhone

Apple has another odd iOS bug to fix after someone found that iPhones running iOS 10 will crash upon receiving a text with just three characters, including waving white flag and rainbow emoji.
Unfortunately, there's nothing iPhone owners can do to prevent a contact sending the malicious text, which trips up the iPhone and causes a temporary crash or, in technical terms, a denial of service.
The YouTube channel EverythingApplePro demonstrates how to copy and send the message, which in some cases can cause the sender's device to crash also.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/G0iPhSuiMpk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The bug was discovered by a computer science student with the Twitter handle @preston159, who explains the message will freeze an iPhone when that string of characters arrives via iMessage and is displayed as a banner notification.
While the recipient sees a flag emoji, a zero, and a rainbow emoji, the zero is actually a Unicode-based instruction for emoji and other characters -- called a variation selector -- which iOS 10 can't process. As noted by EverythingApplePro, the emoji string doesn't crash iOS 9, likely because it doesn't support emoji.
"What you see in the text is the waving white flag emoji, a zero, and the rainbow emoji. The rainbow flag emoji isn't an emoji in itself, it's made of three characters: waving white flag, a character called variation selector 16 (VS16 for short), and the rainbow," says Preston 159 in a writeup of the bug.
"What VS16 does in this case essentially is tells the device to combine the two surrounding characters into one emoji, yielding the rainbow flag (this is similar to how skin tone modifiers work, but not exactly the same). The text you're copying is actually waving white flag, VS16, zero, rainbow emoji.
"What I'm assuming is happening is that the phone tries to combine the waving white flag and the zero into an emoji, but this obviously can't be done. Usually the phone wouldn't try to do this, but it notices that the rainbow emoji is also there, and knows that it can combine the white flag and rainbow emoji, so it tries."
As noted by Preston159, there are multiple ways to trigger this bug in iOS, including by sending a contact file from from an Android device. The bug affects iOS 10 through to the latest iOS 10.2.
Apple had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Apple is already winning the wireless headphones market with AirPods

Despite delays, Apple’s AirPods had a great holiday season according to a new report on wireless headphone online spending over the past several weeks.
The report from Slice Intelligence–which collects its data from hundreds of millions of anonymized e-receipts–found that the $159 AirPods have accounted for more than a quarter of all online wireless headphones revenue since pre-orders for the product launched on December 13.
The report also finds that the AirPods pre-order launch was the biggest day for online headphone sales of the year, outpacing sales on Cyber Monday and Black Friday. A major part of this is no doubt related to the fact that the headphones had a pretty limited launch in retail stores due to low supply caused by manufacturing delays.
Apple already had a major presence in the wireless headphone market previous to the AirPods launch thanks to various wireless models of the company’s Beats headphones. The Slice data shows that in 2015 and 2016, around 24 percent of wireless headphones sold online were Beats-branded.
Headphones are by and large continuing to gain bluetooth connectivity, Slice claims that nearly 75% of headphones purchases bought online this holiday season were of the wireless variety.
Of the many takeaways emerging from CES this year on the consumer hardware front, one of the clearest was that wireless earbuds are in a clear period of growth moving into next year. As more phone manufacturers plot ditching the headphone jack, it seems to be an inevitable direction for the industry to head. The AirPods are some of the most polished wireless earbud solution currently available and are actually a bit cheaper than most options, though they’re still quite expensive.
There really haven’t been any product entrants in the wireless earbud space from legacy audio companies to date, so whether this market position will sustain itself for Apple depends on them innovating the product category itself as they seek to reinvent what all a headphone can really do.

FreeCell New

Free Cell New Solitaire is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The goal of the game is to build each suit from Ace to King and move it to the Foundation piles on the right side. You win the game by moving all cards to the four foundation piles. In Free Cell, king is the highest card, and Ace is the lowest card. Each of the four foundation pile ( on the right side of the screen) must begin with an ace and end with a king.

Move cards in columns by creating lines of cards in descending order and must alternate between red and black. In the upper-left corner are four free cells, where you can store any single card during the play. For example you can place a red 5 on top of a black 6.

Placing the cards into the four open free cell (on the left side of the screen) will give you access to move the other cards in the column. You can use these four open free cell spots as placeholders as you try to move the cards.Once you move a card to the foundation, you can't take it back, undo may help you but will reduce your points, so be sure you won't need that card before moving it to the foundation pile.Moving a sequential stack of cards is the same as moving the cards individually to free spaces and then back to the column. You can only move a sequential stack of cards if you have enough free spaces on the Free Cell area.

You win the game when you have 4 foundation with cards in ascending order from Ace to King in each suit.
