Receiving this rainbow emoji will crash your iPhone

Apple has another odd iOS bug to fix after someone found that iPhones running iOS 10 will crash upon receiving a text with just three characters, including waving white flag and rainbow emoji.

Unfortunately, there's nothing iPhone owners can do to prevent a contact sending the malicious text, which trips up the iPhone and causes a temporary crash or, in technical terms, a denial of service.

The YouTube channel EverythingApplePro demonstrates how to copy and send the message, which in some cases can cause the sender's device to crash also.

The bug was discovered by a computer science student with the Twitter handle @preston159, who explains the message will freeze an iPhone when that string of characters arrives via iMessage and is displayed as a banner notification.

While the recipient sees a flag emoji, a zero, and a rainbow emoji, the zero is actually a Unicode-based instruction for emoji and other characters -- called a variation selector -- which iOS 10 can't process. As noted by EverythingApplePro, the emoji string doesn't crash iOS 9, likely because it doesn't support emoji.

"What you see in the text is the waving white flag emoji, a zero, and the rainbow emoji. The rainbow flag emoji isn't an emoji in itself, it's made of three characters: waving white flag, a character called variation selector 16 (VS16 for short), and the rainbow," says Preston 159 in a writeup of the bug.

"What VS16 does in this case essentially is tells the device to combine the two surrounding characters into one emoji, yielding the rainbow flag (this is similar to how skin tone modifiers work, but not exactly the same). The text you're copying is actually waving white flag, VS16, zero, rainbow emoji.

"What I'm assuming is happening is that the phone tries to combine the waving white flag and the zero into an emoji, but this obviously can't be done. Usually the phone wouldn't try to do this, but it notices that the rainbow emoji is also there, and knows that it can combine the white flag and rainbow emoji, so it tries."

As noted by Preston159, there are multiple ways to trigger this bug in iOS, including by sending a contact file from from an Android device. The bug affects iOS 10 through to the latest iOS 10.2.

Apple had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.

Apple expected to release new iPhone, iPad next month

A growing number of iPhone 6 owners are complaining about random crashes with the newest generation of Apple phones.

Sources have told Buzzfeed News that Apple will debut a new iPhone and iPad on March 21, just one day before the tech company meets with the FBI about a motion that would require Apple to unlock a phone of one of the San Bernardino shooters.

This is almost one week after the first date expected for the announcement, which was March 15.

The announcement is expected to include a smaller iPhone, with a 4-inch screen and a faster chip. The iPad that is expected to be announced is a newer version of the iPad Pro, which debuted last year. 

There will also be new support for Apple Pay,  and new bands for the Apple Watch, according to Buzzfeed.

The announcement is expected to take place at Apple's Town hall in Cupertino, CA.

Market correction suggests Facebook may be the next Apple

Market downturns are always good to spot the next leaders. The market downturn of 2016 is no different. Now there are additional data points showing that FacebookFB, -1.59%  may be the next Apple AAPL, -2.26% No, Facebook will not start making phones. No, Facebook will not have a low P/E like Apple. I am talking about stock performance like Apple of yesteryear.

Five stages

According to ZYX Change Method, there are five stages of a long trade based on change. The annotated diagram shows that Facebook is early in stage three. This is where roughly Apple was in 2011. Subsequent to 2011, Apple stock showed large gains. The same expectation is now for Facebook. The diagram also shows Apple is now in the fifth stage.

Relative strength in 2016

Facebook has shown relative strength in the year 2016. As the annotated chart shows, Facebook has outperformed S&P 500 Index as represented by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust SPY, -1.26%  by 6.47% at the time of this writing.

In contrast, Apple has underperformed the same index by 2.45% at the time of this writing.

Relative strength since the market top

As the annotated chart shows, Facebook has outperformed the S&P 500 by 15.51% since the market top. In contrast, Apple has underperformed the S&P 500 by 17.26%. In other words, Facebook has outperformed Apple by 32.76%.

High-beta expensive stocks

Facebook is a high-beta expensive stock in terms of trailing P/E. High beta means the stock typically moves more than the market.

In this market downturn, high-beta expensive stocks have been especially hard hit. The fact that Facebook has outperformed the market in such an environment is remarkable and bodes well for the things to come. Just take a look at two other social media stocks, LinkedIn LNKD, -0.38%  and Twitter TWTR, +0.00% ; both of these stocks have been cut in about half.

Fundamentals

With a trailing P/E of 80.87, Facebook is a very expensive stock. Compare this with a trailing P/E of 10.22 for Apple. However, the picture changes dramatically when one looks forward. The five-year expected PEG ratio for Facebook is only 1.03. In contrast, PEG Ratio for Apple is 0.89.

To be successful, investors must look forward. Making decisions mostly looking through the rear-view mirror typically does not pay off. From the numbers in the above paragraph, it is obvious that although Facebook is extremely expensive compared to Apple looking in the rear-view mirror, looking forward five years, Facebook starts falling more in line with Apple.

The future of Apple

Apple is still worth holding because there is a lot of potential options coming out of its future products and services. It may be that Apple Pay becomes very successful. It may be that Apple car takes off. While waiting, Apple has become a good value stock with a rock solid balance sheet and a good dividend.

Apple Readying 4in "iPhone 5se" For April Launch

Apple's 4in iPhone 6c will arrive in September 2016 ahead of the iPhone 7 launch, sources claim

Anyone who's shown even a passing interest in pre-launch rumours of a forthcoming phone will know that there does tend to be a fair bit of back-and-forth, see-sawing, if you will, over specific details about Apple’s plans for an iPhone 5c refresh. 

To date there have been a plethora of articles about the return of a 4in iPhone, starting with talk of the iPhone 7c, which then turned into the iPhone 6c. Nowadays, however, it is being referred to as the iPhone 5se — i.e. an evolution of the iPhone 5s, meaning TouchID and a new CPU. 

Regardless of the name, there are two alleged launch dates for the iPhone 5se (or is it the iPhone 6c!?): April 2016, so, just around the corner, or September, which is a bit further away and also Apple’s usual date for launching new iPhones. However, it is looking more and more likely that Apple will announce the iPhone 5se at its apparent March event, alongside the Apple Watch 2 and iPad Air 3. Multiple sources now claim THIS event is the one we’ll see the return of the 4in iPhone at — and that makes sense too. Apple wouldn’t want the iPhone 5se spoiling its iPhone 7 reveal.

And 4in iPhones are still VERY popular, too. 

19% of all iPhone owners are still holding on to their beloved iPhone 5s, says a new report from Mixpanel, while the iPhone 5 accounts for 8% and the iPhone 5c and iPhone 4s are 5.4% and 4.2%, respectively, of all active iPhones currently in use.

From now on, for the sake of brevity, we will be referring to the smaller, 4in iPhone as the iPhone 5se, as this is likely what it will be called when it eventually launches. 

“The new device is internally codenamed ‘N69,’” reports 9to5Mac, “but the launch name will likely be the “iPhone 5se.” The “se” suffix has been described in two ways by Apple employees: as a “special edition” variation of the vintage 4-inch iPhone screen size and as an “enhanced” version of the iPhone 5s. Indeed, the upcoming “5se” features a design similar to 2013’s flagship but upgraded internals, software, and hardware features that blend the old design with modern technologies from the past two iPhone upgrades.”

The iPhone 5se will look like a cross between an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 6, according to reports, and it’ll be available in the same colour scheme as the current iPhone 6s: Rose Gold, Space Gray and silver. The iPhone 5se will also feature a bunch of the iPhone 6/iPhone 6s’ components, as well as a more rounded design which makes it sound a lot closer to the iPhone 6 than the iPhone 5s. 

“The company is also expected to release new Apple Watch accessories, including new straps, and updates to the operating system at the event,” reports The Independent. “But it won’t see a full redesign of the Watch itself, which is thought to be coming in September — probably at the same time as the iPhone 7 is released.”

Sources have provided the following list of “iPhone 5se” upgrades over the 5s:

• The chamfered, shiny edges have been replaced with curved glass like on the iPhone 6 and 6s lines
• The same 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.2 megapixel front camera systems from the iPhone 6
• Support for larger panoramas and autofocus for video recording
• Barometer for tracking elevation in the Health app
• An NFC chip for Apple Pay
• The A8 and M8 chips from the iPhone 6
• Bluetooth 4.2, VoLTE, and 802.11ac WiFi chips from the iPhone 6s
• Live Photos from the iPhone 6s
• Same Silver, Space Gray, Gold, & Rose Gold color options as the 6s line.

Word of Apple’s BIG Q1 reveal first surfaced last month and since then things have developed pretty quickly with talk of a new Apple Watch, a new iPad Air and a reboot of the iPhone 5c, apparently called the iPhone 5se, appearing at the event. 

And this is pretty significant. Apple doesn’t usually do stuff like this, like, ever. 9to5Mac got the initial scoop way back when and had this to say earlier this week: 

“Apple is currently aiming to unveil the new 4-inch the iPhone 5se, the iPad Air 3, and new Apple Watch band options at an event on Tuesday, March 15th, according to sources. We previously reported that Apple was on track to launch the new products during the week of March 14th. As the scheduled event is still a month-and-a-half away, the date could conceivably still shift or turn into an online announcement. The media event would be Apple’s first since September, and much like the fall event, is planned to touch on three major product categories for the company.”

We saw some concept renders and rumours a while back suggesting the iPhone 6c/5se would come in a few colour variations, including blue and pink. Well now, as of February 8, new reports claim that there will be precisely three colour variants - silver, space grey, and pink. Allegedly this won't be your shy retiring soft pink, or rose gold, either, nope, this is full on PINK. This is all according to exhibitors speaking to Japanese Apple blog Macotakara at the Tokyo International Gift Show.

Wondering what a new iPhone 6c/7c will look like? As is often the case ahead of Apple device launches, someone with 3D modelling abilities has taken it upon themselves to put together the various rumours and leaks into a visual imagining of the forthcoming smartphone design. We've seen repeated rumours that the next C category iPhone will feature a metal build rather than the old plastic, but the jury's out on whether it'll carry on the bright colouration. 

Ferry Passchier decided to run with the colourful look in his renders of the 4in, iPod-like iPhone 6c. He depicts the new phone as having a very similar design to the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6, but naturaly smaller, and in a selection of dark pink and dark blue for the metal bodywork, on top of the existing iPhone colours - space grey, rose gold, silver, and gold.

First iPhone 6c/iPhone 5se Photos Surface - Confirms TouchID Home Key

The first live photos of the iPhone 6c or iPhone 5se have emerged online, and brace yourself because you might be taken aback by how underwhelming it is! You see, the photo shows the new model side-by-side with an iPhone 5 and the differences are subtle enough that you've gotta be paying attention to spot them - otherwise it basically just looks like a pair of iPhone 5 phones.

The photo, which comes via Dutch Apple site onemorething.nl, shows an iPhone 5 on the left, and the new 4in model on the right. At first glance it does just look like the same phone, but we can just about discern is slightly smaller, and a bit wider - it's hard to be sure from this angle but it may be a bit thinner too. You can also see the controls are in a different location, with the right-hand model exhibiting the recent iPhone 6 series control layout, and the same goes for the front-facing camera position. If you look at the power key you'll also see a design that appears to be the TouchID Home key with an integrated fingerprint scanner, while the iPhone 5 has the old Home key with a square motif.

iPhone 5se Renders Emerge

There have also been a bunch of colourful mock-ups published online by China Mobile that aim to show how the iPhone 5se will fit in with Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus lineup. Once again, colour and price will be the driving factor behind iPhone 5se adoption — and no, we do not believe it will be called the iPhone 7c. This is a reboot to 2013’s iPhone 5c, so the 5se makes perfect sense. Even more so when you consider the handset is based on the iPhone 6’s design just with iPhone 5s specs and hardware inside it.

Here’s what The Mail Online had to say about the iPhone 5se: “Apple is reportedly planning a March event for the Apple Watch 2, and it is believed the new handset will be unveiled at the same time. The firm will then save the launch of its rumoured iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus until its traditional September event. Given the fact that the iPhone 7c could be released before the official iPhone 7, it is more likely the phone will be called iPhone 6c.”

Apple reportedly sold in excess of 20 million iPhone 5c units which is a HUGE amount of sales for a handset that many labelled a failure. HTC, Sony, LG and Samsung would all love sales that large for their respective, non-flagship handsets and for this reason we do have to take the iPhone Xc series seriously.

Consumers loved the iPhone 5c, you see the handsets everywhere — just look around you next time you’re out. The idea of Apple releasing three handsets in 2016 might sound odd to many, but the reality is much simpler: Apple is a business and it will do all it can to dominate the mobile space. 

The reintroduction of a more affordable iPhone, but, importantly, one that costs more than this year’s models next year, alongside two new handsets would generate a lot of additional revenue for the company — particularly if the iPhone 7c is based on the iPhone 5s, as sources suggest.

Why? Simple: Apple can sell old technology at modern prices and that, dear readers, is excellent business if you can get away with it!

Apple, Google encryption is a blow to public safety

The default policy for the firms' phones creates barriers for law enforcement. 

A November 2015 report of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York City sets forth succinctly a huge public safety problem of which most Americans are unaware:

“Most people today live their lives on smartphones, and, in this regard at least, criminals are no different. While in the past criminals may have kept evidence of their crimes in file cabinets, closets and safes, today that evidence is more often found on smartphones. Photos and videos of child sexual assault, text messages between sex traffickers and their customers, even a video of a murder victim being shot to death — these are just a few of the pieces of evidence found on smartphones and used to prosecute people committing horrific crimes.

“Last fall a decision by a single company changed the way those of us in law enforcement work to keep the public safe and bring justice to victims and their families. In September 2014 Apple announced that its new operating system for smartphones and tablets would employ, by default, what is commonly referred to as “full-disk encryption,” making data on its devices completely inaccessible without a pass code. Shortly thereafter, Google announced that it would do the same.

“Apple’s and Google’s decisions to enable full-disk encryption by default on smartphones means that law enforcement officials can no longer access evidence of crimes stored on smartphones, even though the officials have a search warrant issued by a neutral judge.

“Apple and Google are not responsible for keeping the public safe. That is the job of law enforcement. But the consequences of these companies’ actions on public safety are severe.”

Smartphone encryption will hamper many criminal investigations. E-mails, text messages, voice messages, photos and other data — all of which could lead to the perpetrator of a crime or finding an abducted victim — will now be fully encrypted simply so Apple and Google can increase their profits by advertising enticing claims of privacy.

And this is not just about domestic criminal investigations. What happens when the U.S. military captures or kills the next global terrorist, locates his phone and acquires … nothing.

This is not an issue of government overreaching into the private lives of citizens, as some make it out to be. No smartphone or other device can be accessed by law enforcement without a search warrant issued upon probable cause assessed by a neutral magistrate.

This isn’t about privacy, and it shouldn’t be about profits. It’s about the safety of American citizens and others around the world.

Congress can stop this serious public safety risk tomorrow by its inherent powers under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. The time to act is now.

Rumor: Apple has an updated 4-inch iPhone due early next year

It could combine the power (and metal) of new iPhones with the smaller size of older ones.

Want a handset with Apple's fancy new A9 processor, a colorful metal case and a slightly smaller display? GHI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo says you're going to get one. According to the analyst's latest research, Apple is on track to launch a 4-inch Apple 5 successor in early 2016 -- painting the picture of a device with the same A9 processor as the iPhone 6s, NFC support for Apple Pay, a metal case with multiple color options and a $400-500 off-contract price tag aimed at the budget market.

If real, the device could be a welcome followup to Apple's "unapologetically plastic" 5c smartphone -- retaining the smaller footprint of the iPhone 5/6 and still integrating some of the best tweaks introduced with the 6s. Still, take the rumor with a grain of salt: Ming-Chi Kuo has a decent track record when it comes to Apple predictions, but he isn't always right.

iPad Pro screen freeze bug reported; Apple Inc responded with a quick fix

While we all thought that Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) guarantees faultless gadgets, there is new news around the corner which clearly disproves this idea. The newly released iPad Pro is already experiencing a whole lot of problems and one of them is the Screen Freeze issue.

A whole host of electronic gadgets faces these issues, and now even Apple too cannot be entirely exempted from the list. These problems are now tainted the brand value of Apple, and customers are now turning disappointed. The technicians at Apple have agreed that this problem exists on most of the Apple iPad Pro device models and has to be critically considered to be resolved.

Update: Apple Inc has responded to the issue and released a note which gives iPad Pro users a temporary solution:

“Learn what to do if your iPad Pro doesn’t respond when you press buttons or tap on the screen, and the screen is black. To get back to using your iPad Pro, force restart it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.”

The customers of iPad Pro faced issues recently in relation to the screen. They have observed that whenever the Apple iPad Pro was plugged in, the phone immediately started to get unresponsive. The screen was said to have turned black by multiple taps on the screen or button pressing. It further couldn’t be operated or used, and the problem was recently discussed about on Apple Support Communities. People do come up with assumptions of it being a mere charge related issue, and occurs only when the device is plugged in.

But, Apple didn’t leave its customers alone to deal with the problem, but instead has posted DIY instruction on its site to solve the issue. What Apple has instructed on its support community is about how one can resolve this issue by merely pressing and hold down of Sleep and Home button. This has turned to be a menace to most of the Apple users, as the solution provided doesn’t really go into the root of the problem, but superficially tries to resolve.

“At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was ‘dead.’ I couldn’t wake it up,” wrote one user, identified only as Darkfire.Shadows, on Apple’s community support website. “I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead.”

It has also been reported that it’s not just one model of iPad Pro that has been affected, but both, 32 and 128 GB. This is a clear indication that none of the models of iPad Pro are faultless, and every one of these comes with a hardware/software problem. This iPad Pro was supposed to be standing as a rival to all desktop computers due to its suitability on professional grounds. It was targeted towards the business and professional class, in order to make easier, productive work without the need of a desktop computer.

This concept of iPad Pro being the newest version of an iPad needed more publicity than other Apple devices in order to build its credibility for new product niches. With the nasty display issues taking a front seat, it has now been quite a challenging task for Apple to sustain the brand value it’s acquired over the years. Although, this is not the first time that Apple faced an issue like this, sales of the device would probably be affected if the problem continues.

iPhone 7 Release Date in September 2016 – Thinnest iPhone Ever With 3GB RAM

The upcoming iPhone 7 will come with a big upgrade in the memory department. However, you will most likely have to get the iPhone 7 Plus version, as the “normal” version will most likely have less RAM memory.

We all know that Apple released its iPhone 6S and iPhone 6Plus this September, but the internet is already full of rumors regarding the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, which are expected to be released sometime in September 2016 and which will come with a completely overhauled design.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a well known analyst and tipsters, the iPhone 7 will probably be the thinnest iPhone that Apple has ever made. The device will most likely measure 6mm in thickness, which is around the same size as the current iPod Touch model.

However, that’s not all, as according to rumors, Apple will also bring more RAM memory to the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus. If rumors prove to be right, this device will feature 3GB of RAM, which will make the device to run at a very high performance when coupled with the Apple’s next-generation A10 chipset.

For the past two generation of iPhones, the difference between the normal iPhone and the Plus one was the display size. It seems that Apple will do the same with the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. With other words, the Plus version of iPhone 7 will feature a bigger display than the “normal” version.

There are rumors which say that iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will also feature wireless charging and they will be waterproof. This Could Be Google’s Next Move to Fight Apple

Google reportedly wants to design its own chips, which could give Android more ammunition to compete with the iPhone

There are many differences between Android and Apple’s iOS, but among the biggest is that each Android phone is slightly different than the next. While every generation of iPhone runs the same type of software and features similar hardware specifications, most Android phones come with different processors and software that’s been slightly tweaked or modified by the phone’s manufacturer, like Samsung or HTC.
Google, however, wants to create more consistency within the Android universe, according to a new report from The Information’s Amir Efrati. The company is said to be in talks with microchip companies about developing chips based on Google’s own preferred designs, the report says.
This likely won’t impact whether Android phone makers decide to modify software on Android phones. Three Exciting iPhone Leaks

Ming-Chi Kuo, the KGI Securities analyst who correctly predicted the 12-inch MacBook, the dual-sized screen approach of the iPhone 6 family and the full features list of the iPhone 6S, has turned his attention to the iPhone 7. Forbes’ Gordon Kelly looks at his predictions for next year’s flagship smartphone from Apple:

How he breaks this down is the introduction of an entry level 4-inch iPhone 7 with metal chassis which sees it break away from the plastic ‘C series’. iOS 9.1 Breaks TouchID

Apple continues to roll out updates to iOS 9 promising new features and improvements, but the speedy rate of updates appears to be introducing more flaws into the platform. The latest issue uncovered this week is around Touch ID, iOS 9.1 has reduced the accuracy of the security and authentication system.

Despite launching with a changelog that admitted 11 of its 13 features were bug fixes, iOS 9.1 is raising ire across Apple’s official Support Communities forum for breaking Touch ID across iPhones and iPads – both old and new (sources 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 – and many, many more).

The complaints are similar: users running iOS 9.1 find Touch ID either refuses to recognise a user’s fingerprint, has become highly unreliable or doesn’t even register a fingerprint pressed against it. Users have tried hard resets (holding in the power and home button for 10 seconds) and complete factory resets without any success.

Normally as a user you would be looking to roll back to a previous version of the OS while the bugs are worked out, but as is typical with Apple and iOS 9, the previous version (9.0.2) will no longer install because Apple has revoked its certification.

Alarms Are Problematic As Well

Touch ID is not the only issue in iOS 9.1 with numerous reports coming in that alarms are not ringing after the update is installed. It is not a universal problem, but it seems to be more prevalent if you use the ‘install the OS update overnight’ option:

Perhaps as equally frustrating as this alarm bug is the sense of deja vu. Isolated reports of failing alarms were reported with iOS 9 and supposedly fixed in iOS 9.0.1, while a famous glitch with the iPhone 4 back in 2010 saw millions of alarms go off an hour late when calendars failed to adjust for Daylight savings time.

While those affected wait for another iOS update our recommendation would be to install another alarm app, such as Sleep Cycle.
