Apple, Google encryption is a blow to public safety

The default policy for the firms' phones creates barriers for law enforcement.

A November 2015 report of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York City sets forth succinctly a huge public safety problem of which most Americans are unaware:
“Most people today live their lives on smartphones, and, in this regard at least, criminals are no different. While in the past criminals may have kept evidence of their crimes in file cabinets, closets and safes, today that evidence is more often found on smartphones. Photos and videos of child sexual assault, text messages between sex traffickers and their customers, even a video of a murder victim being shot to death — these are just a few of the pieces of evidence found on smartphones and used to prosecute people committing horrific crimes.
“Last fall a decision by a single company changed the way those of us in law enforcement work to keep the public safe and bring justice to victims and their families. In September 2014 Apple announced that its new operating system for smartphones and tablets would employ, by default, what is commonly referred to as “full-disk encryption,” making data on its devices completely inaccessible without a pass code. Shortly thereafter, Google announced that it would do the same.
“Apple’s and Google’s decisions to enable full-disk encryption by default on smartphones means that law enforcement officials can no longer access evidence of crimes stored on smartphones, even though the officials have a search warrant issued by a neutral judge.
“Apple and Google are not responsible for keeping the public safe. That is the job of law enforcement. But the consequences of these companies’ actions on public safety are severe.”
Smartphone encryption will hamper many criminal investigations. E-mails, text messages, voice messages, photos and other data — all of which could lead to the perpetrator of a crime or finding an abducted victim — will now be fully encrypted simply so Apple and Google can increase their profits by advertising enticing claims of privacy.
And this is not just about domestic criminal investigations. What happens when the U.S. military captures or kills the next global terrorist, locates his phone and acquires … nothing.
This is not an issue of government overreaching into the private lives of citizens, as some make it out to be. No smartphone or other device can be accessed by law enforcement without a search warrant issued upon probable cause assessed by a neutral magistrate.
This isn’t about privacy, and it shouldn’t be about profits. It’s about the safety of American citizens and others around the world.
Congress can stop this serious public safety risk tomorrow by its inherent powers under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. The time to act is now.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom are both members of the board of directors of the National District Attorneys Association.

Apple drops hint firm is developing a car

Apple's operations chief Jeff Williams has dropped the biggest hint yet that the firm is developing a car.

Speaking at the Code Conference, he was asked about industries Apple might pursue with its large cash hoard.

His answer: 'The car is the ultimate mobile device.'
Williams then quickly added: 'We're exploring a lot of different markets.'

He said that the deciding factor in choosing new businesses is not the opportunity for revenue growth, but 'which ones are ones we think we can make a huge amount of difference.'

The answer comes a few months after claims that Apple has several hundred employees working secretly toward an Apple-branded electric vehicle.

However, when pressed, Williams referred to the potential for Car Play, a service introduced by Apple last year to allow drivers to access Apple services like iTunes music, maps and Siri through a vehicle's dashboard information system.

Williams also revealed Apple will next month will take a step toward making the Apple Watch more independent of the iPhone.

He said Apple will offer a developer kit to allow non-Apple apps to run apps natively on the Watch and access the device's sensors.

Until now, third-party apps have run on the iPhone, not directly on the Watch.

Williams said there are more than 4,000 apps available for the Watch.

The kit will be unveiled at Apple's developer conference starting June 8.

Williams said the new Watch apps will appear in the fall.

However, he refused to be drawn on how many devices had been shipped.

'Demand divided by supply is greater than one. That's all I've got. It's a lot,' he told interviewer Walt Mossberg.

He also revealed that over the recent holiday quarter, Apple shipped 74 million iPhones - so many that, if stacked they would reach the International Space Station.

'They were built, produced and shipped in 90 days,' Williams said.

He also hit back at questions about labour conditions at factories in China, and revealed that following a spate of suicides at one Foxconn facility in 2010, he and CEO Tim Cook personally investigated the issue.

'We learned it had nothing to do with working conditions,' Williams said, echoing an observation Apple co-founder once made about the suicide rate at Foxconn.

'[The factory had a] lower suicide rate at their biggest cluster than any place in the US.

'By that standard, it's the happiest place on earth.'

Williams also revealed Apple will next month will take a step toward making the Apple Watch more independent of the iPhone. Photo / AP
The interview can amid claims Apple has several hundred employees developing its own electric car at a secret lab.

Apple-owned cars was spotted fitted with Street View-style cameras.

'Dozens of Apple employees, led by experienced managers from its iPhone unit, are researching automotive products at a confidential Silicon Valley location outside the company's Cupertino campus,' the FT claims it was told by sources close to Apple.

It says the Apple research lab was set up late last year - meaning any car could still be years away.

It is believed Apple designer Sir Jonathan Ive is overseeing the lab, and the Bentley owning designer is known to be a car enthusiast.

The FT says one of its sources initially believe the project was Apple's in-car entertainment system, known as CarPlay - but now believes it is something more.

'Three months ago I would have said it was CarPlay. Today I think it's a car.'

The Wall Street Journal says that hundreds of employees are working on the project, codenamed Titan.

It says CEO Tim Cook approved the project close to a year ago with product design Vice President Steve Zadesky leading the group.

His LinkedIn page reveals he was previously an engineer at Ford.

'I love helping to create new product spaces and delivering challenging new technologies,' his biography says.

'At Apple I have been lucky enough to help build and lead the teams for the first iPod, first iPhone, all subsequent iPhones and iPods as well as hundreds of Apple branded accessory products.'

Zadesky 'was given permission to create a 1,000-person team and poach employees from different parts of the company.'

'The project, code-named 'Titan,' has an initial design of a vehicle that resembles a minivan,' its sources claim.

Apple also recently hired former Mercedes-Benz R&D head Johann Jungwirth, who joined Apple as a Mac systems engineering leader last fall.

A source claiming to be an Apple employee has hinted that the giant is developing a vehicle as part of a project that 'will change the landscape and give Tesla a run for its money.'

The email from the unnamed employee was sent to Business Insider.

It described 'vehicle development' at the company but didn't reveal further information.

In particular, Apple may be working on an electric car to rival Tesla's range or a self-driving car that would ultimately also rival Google's autonomous project.

The cameras on the mysterious van could be used to scan the road and help engineers develop self-driving software, for example.

The firm is also trying to poach staff from Tesla.

Apple is trying very hard to hire engineers away from Tesla Motors, Elon Musk told Bloomberg.

The CEO claims that the Cupertino company is gunning hard for his employees, offering them as much as $250K signing bonuses and 60% salary increases.

'Apple tries very hard to recruit from Tesla,' he said.

'But so far they've actually recruited very few people.'

This may seem like a leap for Apple to take, but it isn't the first time such projects have been discussed by the Californian firm.

In an interview last year, Apple board member Mickey Drexler said that before his death in 2011 Steve Jobs had considered building a car.

He told Paul Goldberger: 'Steve Jobs was gonna design an iCar. I think cars have an extraordinary opportunity for cool design.'

Alternatively, the Apple employee's email could be referring to an advanced iPhone in-car control system that would rival Tesla's software.

The Dodge van with the equipment on the top was spotted by the blog Claycord in San Francisco.

The blog owners apparently asked the driver what he was doing, but he refused to give an answer.

But a video from last year shows a similar car, which later transpired to be an unmarked self-driving Dodge caravan.

According to 9to5mac, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) confirmed the vehicle was leased to Apple.

With 12 cameras on top of the car, some have said that is too many for it to be a mapping car like Google's Street View.

'Too many cameras,' said technology analyst Rob Enderle.

'It has cameras that are angled down at all four corners of the vehicle.'

This would further lend itself to the self-driving car theory.

'Unfortunately for that theory, only six companies have been issued the permits necessary to test such vehicles, and Apple isn't one of them,' said 9to5mac.

'This brings us back to a much more likely conclusion: Apple is preparing to take on Google's Street View with a similar offering in its own Maps software.'

They said it might feature as part of the iOS 9 upgrade due later this year, although it would likely begin only with select cities such as New York and San Francisco.

This would plug a noticeable hole in Apple Maps, which has been missing Street View-style images ever since Apple made it the default maps app for iPhones.

When contacted by MailOnline, Apple declined to comment on the car in question or what its purpose was

Apple Said To Be Bringing Transit Directions To iOS 9

Apple is said to be planning to bring built-in transit directions to its native Maps app in iOS 9. Transit directions were left out when Apple replaced Google Maps with its own offering as the default navigation app in iOS 6 back in 2012. The native transit directions offering is actually a feature that was held over from an intended release last year with iOS 8, according to 9to5Mac, which reported both that intended launch and this new iOS 9 inclusion.

Apple is said to have made a late-stage decision to take transit navigation out of iOS 8, according to the new report, and instead intends to launch it with this year’s update of its mobile OS. The directions would offer the ability to plan trips, getting estimated travel times for bus, train and subway transit methods. It would offer multiple trip options, as well as a special map view detailing local transit stops alongside its Standard, Hybrid and Satellite visualization options.

Besides transit, which is likely a welcome addition for many urban iOS device owners (especially now that the Apple Watch could potentially provide at-a-glance route checking) Apple is also said to be working on building out its indoor mapping capabilities. The ability to navigate major landmarks and buildings with granular indoor directions is a feature that Apple apparently wants to offer, though it like will come at a later date, rather than bundled with the iOS 9 update we’ll almost certainly see introduced at WWDC in June.

Apple has acquired HopStop and Embark, two companies that have built transit mapping and directions apps for iPhone in the past. Both those acquisitions came to light in 2013, but so far we’ve yet to see their impact in either public- or developer-facing features of iOS. Apple was also hiring transit-focused software engineers as recently as April, so while it’s certain the company wants to bring this to market, we’ll have to wait and see whether that happens in iOS 9, or whether it’s held off for another later release.

6 Reasons Apple Inc. Should Never Build A TV

Rumors that Apple would jump into the TV market have been swirling for almost a decade, but plans for an Apple TV set were nixed more than a year ago, according to a report this week. While that may sadden a few Apple fanfolks, it's a great call for Apple, which can now move on to other things like cars and search engines, to name a few. Here are five reasons Apple should drop any TV plans and slowly step away:

No Killer Feature

TV is a crowded space, with no one owning more than 22 percent of the market, so for Apple to break in, the company would’ve likely needed a killer feature or some unique way to differentiate itself from the Samsungs, LGs and Sonys of the world. Apple played around with a few unique technologies, including a FaceTime camera capable of detecting and turning to whomever is speaking in a room, but ultimately, the company decided that none of the features it tried out were compelling enough to justify an entrance into the competitive TV market, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Apple’s brand is pretty powerful, but that wouldn’t be enough to carry the company to success in the TV market. Without a killer feature, Apple would’ve been just another fish in the sea of TV makers.

It's Not About The TV, Anyway

To understand Apple and Silicon Valley, you have to understand their favorite and most overused quote, from pro-hockey great Wayne Gretzky: “Skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it has been.”

The TV set has traditionally been the center of home entertainment, but with the rise of smartphones, tablets and services like Netflix and Hulu Plus that can be watched on laptops, a TV set is no longer essential. Among millennials, for example, 60 percent already watch TV programming on their smartphones every month, according to comScore.

Apple wants to ride the wave of the next great consumer products, like wearables with the Apple Watch or perhaps virtual reality, not catch the tail end of television sales.

The Box Doesn't Matter, But The Service Inside Does

Apple is about to disrupt the TV universe with its own pay-TV service, which will probably be unveiled at WWDC next month. This service will do more to upend home entertainment than any dumb box could. Apple has been negotiating for rights with network TV providers for years, rights that will allow viewers to search for shows past and present; an attempt at reinventing pay-TV and add some real competition for Comcast, DirecTV, Verizon and others.

The TV itself is a commodity. The service inside won't be if Apple can get it right and get the most important content providers onboard.

Apple TV Is Key

Apple may have scrapped plans for a TV set, but the company has been selling Apple TV streaming devices since early 2007, before the iPhone even existed. Apple has sold millions of units of the little hockey puck-like device (they love that hockey saying, I’m telling you), which is used for accessing online content on the likes of Netflix, YouTube and HBO Now.

An over-the-top gizmo may not be as exciting as an Apple-branded TV set, but Apple is right in understanding that this is the future of TV. This is why Apple is expected to announce a new, redesigned and much improved Apple TV box next month at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference.

TV Replacement Cycles Are Long

Be honest: Your 7-year-old HD TV set works just fine, right? One of Apple’s biggest struggles currently is that it can’t get people to buy new iPads. Tablet replacement cycles are longer than smartphones’, and that’s why Apple is seeing its sales of iPads fall every quarter. TV-set sales would be even worse.

According to NPD DisplaySearch, the TV replacement cycle is approximately eight years. That's a waste of time for Apple, which sees its best product -- the iPhone -- get replaced by users every two years, give or take. Selling an Apple TV set would give the company a boost for maybe one or two years, but after that, sales would likely fall off as they have with the iPad.

Small Margins

Apple’s known for pulling tremendous margins out of every product it sells. Last quarter, the company posted tremendous gross profit margins of 39.5 percent, and the new Apple Watch is expected to follow suit.

That’s not the case in the TV market. Televisions use expensive technology yet every year, manufacturers lower prices in an effort to spur sales. It’s a race to the bottom that cuts margins, and it’s not the type of race Apple likes running.

iPad Pro rumor roundup: Everything we know about the release date, price and specs of Apple's possible big-screen iPad

With sales of the iPad declining for five straight quarters, Apple will be looking to make a statement with the next generation of its flagship tablet. Though the iPad remains the standard-bearer for the category, a gaggle of rivals -- from Samsung to a collection of mostly lower-end competitors -- have continued to cut into Apple's market share since the iPad Air 2 and Mini 3 debuted in October 2014.

That noted, Apple has introduced an array of interesting new features and products over the past few months including Force Touch, which brought pressure-sensitivity to the new MacBook trackpads; the Apple Watch; and its Apple Pay service, which continues to gain traction and add retail partners. There is speculation that elements of these technologies could find their way into the next iPad.

Apple could also inject new life -- and further profitability -- into the iPad line by creating a new high-end model with a larger screen.

Of course, Apple remains characteristically tight-lipped about all of this. Into this vacuum of fact-based evidence, the Internet is awash in rumor, theory, and hearsay about speeds, feeds, designs and features. Even the product name is a subject of conjecture, with "iPad Pro" and "iPad Plus" emerging as the most credible contenders.

With the important caveat that this is merely a rumored product -- and one which may never even see the light of day -- we present the top predictions that have bubbled to the surface.

Announcement and release dates

There's a long shot that the company could introduce the iPad Pro at its World Wide Developers Conference, scheduled to run from June 8 to 12 in San Francisco. (CNET will have live coverage of the June 8 keynote.) But given that Apple has debuted new iPads, large and small, in October or November since 2012 (about a month after the iPhone is generally unveiled), that timeframe is much more likely. An autumn release -- alongside, we assume, an iPad Air 3 and Mini 4 -- would also dovetail with the presumed availability of an updated iOS 9 mobile operating system, which Apple will almost certainly preview at its June WWDC event.Mobile app development

Design

Apple Insider theorizes that the new iPad Pro will feature a 12.9-inch touchscreen, which would give it a significantly larger profile than both the 7.9-inch Mini 3 and 9.7-inch Air 2. (Other reports peg the screen size at 12.2 inches.) It's difficult to imagine an iPad that's much thinner than the Air 2 (which measures 6.1 millimeters, just slightly thicker than the thinnest tablet on the market, the Dell Venue 8 7000).

New colors are always an option, however, and Apple could change things up by moving beyond the current generation's choices of gold, silver, and space gray.

Touch

It's quite conceivable that Apple will incorporate Force Touch into the next iPad, adding a dimension of pressure sensitivity to the device's interactive capacity.

There are also murmurs about the possibility of an Bluetooth iPen stylus that incorporates pressure sensitivity. Though there is something distinctly un-Apple about this -- Steve Jobs famously disparaged the accessory -- stylus-equipped tablets like the Surface Pro 3 and phablets like the Galaxy Note 4 have been enthusiastically received by many consumer and professional users.

NFC

Though the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 include support for online Apple Pay, they do so without near field communication capabilities (NFC), which enable tap-to-pay functionality. Apple included support for NFC in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, however, and more recently in the Apple Watch. The popularity of the iPad doubling as an electronic cash register in retail locations, and the increasing penetration of Apple Pay, which leverages the technology, makes NFC a possible feature for the next iPad.

Connections

Given that the USB-C port was included on the new MacBooks introduced in April 2015, it's entirely possible that Apple would use the same connection on the next iPad. Whether or not that would be in addition to or in place of the standard Apple Lightning port is anyone's guess, but the inclusion of USB-C could enable the larger iPad to be move flexible with accessories -- including keyboard docks and external monitors -- than the current models.

Less likely is support for inductive charging -- a feature found on the Apple Watch and an increasing number of non-Apple smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Acquires Coherent Navigation to Bolster its Location Technology

In order to better serve customers, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) used to make valuable contributions to its products. Recently, it has taken another step to enhance its mapping capabilities by purchasing Coherent Navigation, a Bay Area GPS-related firm originated in 2008 by engineers from Cornell and Stanford. The puchase is anticipated to further improve the company’s location services and technology; however, it has not disclosed the deal details including financial terms.

When originated, the Bay Area global positioning company was a small firm that concentrated on generating commercial navigation services based on joint ventures with companies like Iridium, satellite network operator and Boeing, according to The New York Times report. The firm’s one area of focus was High Integrity GPS (“iGPS”), a system that joins signals from the low-earth satellites of voice with those from the traditional mid-earth orbit GPS satellites and data supplier Iridium to provide greater precision and accuracy, higher signal integrity and greater jam resistance. Iridium introduces iGPS as having the prospective to offer location information exact to within centimeters.

Recently, a number of Coherent’s vital employees have started working for Apple, including co-founders Brett Ledvina and William Bencze as of last month and CEO and tech veteran Paul Lego in January. The firm’s website is also held offline; however, the name servers for the domain were updated on April 30 to identify Apple’s servers.

In a long series of mapping-related purchases that Apple has made over the years, Coherent Navigation is the latest, containing the developers behind Pin Drop, Broadmap, Locationary, Hopstop, WifiSLAM and Embark. Apple is constantly bolstering its mapping services with working to add features like possibly Street View-like imagery and transit information to its services, since a transition away from Google Maps with the launch of iOS 6 in 2012.

The New York Times was provided the standard confirmation statement by the company suggesting that it acquires smaller technology companies and generally do not reveals its plans or purpose.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s stock on 15 May traded at beginning with a price of $129.13 and when day-trade ended the stock finally moved down -0.14% to end at $128.77. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s showed weekly performance of 0.90%.

New 'iPhone 6s' details leak

A new colour, better camera and more processing power are among the features Apple fans can expect in the next batch of iPhones, according to the first substantial leak of information ahead of the phones' reveal.

The devices that will likely launch in September as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus – the improvements appear too slight to corroborate the rumour of a full-fledged iPhone 7 – also take some inspiration from Apple's first wearable device, the Apple Watch.

KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo – who has a history of accurately reporting Apple device specifications before they're officially revealed – detailed the changes in a note seen by enthusiast news site Apple Insider.

The new iPhones will come in "rose gold", like the Apple Watch, according to Kuo. It's unclear whether this will replace the existing gold colour and whether it will be actual gold ($24,000 phone to go with your watch, madam?) or merely a tint.

The leak also indicates some slight performance boosts and hardware upgrades for the new handsets, including a 12 megapixel primary camera (up from 8 megapixels), 2 gigabytes of RAM (up from the 1 gigabyte used since the iPhone 5), an additional microphone (presumably for noise cancellation) and an upgrade to a vague new processor Apple will probably call the A9.

There will also be modest improvements to the Touch ID sensor, Kuo said.

Most significantly, the "Force Touch" technology seen on the Apple Watch and new Macbook – which gives surfaces the ability to detect how hard you're pressing on a screen – will apparently be used to allow a greater range of touch inputs on the new phones.

"Force Touch can enrich user experience due to more input methods and support of handwritten signatures, which is beneficial for expanding the commercial market," Kuo said, according to Apple Insider.

The design of the devices may be in for some tweaking as well, with Kuo claiming the larger phone in particular will be built with a new design and materials, specifically to avoid accidental damage like that seen in the "bendgate" social phenomenon.

The larger phone is also apparently being considered for a scratch-resistant sapphire glass cover, but only if certain difficulties in the manufacturing and design can be overcome.

In what may be a concern to some, there was no mention from Kuo of any improvements to the iPhones' maligned battery life.

Apple Loop: iPhone Demolishes Galaxy S6, Apple Watch Exposed, iPad Dominates Tablet Market

Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop looks at the industrial design strength of the iPhone, Apple’s Q2 earnings call, the iPad numbers in the tablet market, new hires from BBC Radio 1, tearing down the Apple Watch, eclipsing Android Wear, echoes of Roger Moore, and secrets of the Voice Memo icon.

Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read our weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).

Industrial Design Is The Winning Move

The discussions of iPhone vs Android (and specifically the Samsung Galaxy S6) continue to power many debates in the smartphone world, and the current range of handsets are close enough in capability and specifications to keep those conversations going.

It’s only when you switch to the industrial design aspect that there is clear air between Apple and the competition, as Rene Ritchie discusses on iMore - does it matter that ports, doors, ejection pins, and speaker grilles are not perfectly lined up?

To align everything along the edge of a device takes designing and mounting the boards in a certain way, and the ports and speakers, and the buttons and jacks, and the grills and every other detail so they all line up at exactly the right place at the end. Painstaking is likely an understatement…

I had the chance to spend several evenings with the Galaxies S6 recently and while Samsung ditched a ton of differentiation to offer a more iPhone-like product. Android stalwarts will bemoan the lack of removable battery, the lack of SD card support, and the lack of waterproofing. My reaction was to bemoan the lack of deep, detail oriented design culture and pride in craft.

Because once you know the back of the fence wasn’t painted, not only can you never un-know it, you can never stop wondering what else wasn’t given that same care and consideration.

Is the workmanship of the iPhone the winning move from Apple?

Another Monster Quarter From Apple

Apple’s quarterly earnings report was released on Monday, and while they might not match the record-breaking Q4 2014 numbers, Q1 2015 was another strong period for Cupertino. Headline numbers include sales of over 60 million iPhones (a forty percent increase year on year), 4.56 million Macs (up ten percent year on year), and $13.5 billion in profit (reports Apple Insider and others).

Almost every number is impressive, but looking at the revenue numbers there’s a great note from GeekWire -  if you add the quarterly revenue of Microsoft… and Google… and Yahoo… and Facebook…. you’d still be $14 billion short of Apple’s $58.1 billion revenue.

iPad Still Rules The Smaller Tablet Kingdom

As for the iPad, the raw numbers from Apple are dropping, with a twenty-three percent drop in units sold compared to last year. That said, those 12.6 million units still captured twenty-seven percent of the tablet market, and continued Apple’s reign as the number on tablet manufacturer. Samsung reached second place with 19 percent, and every other manufacturer was under five percent.

Those numbers are from IDC, who also noted that tablet sales as a whole have continued to fall, with an overall six percent drop year-on-year. It also noted that cellular-enabled tablets are becoming more popular in the mix of equipment.

Apple Reaches Into BBC Radio 1

Apart from some changes in on the retail side of things, many Apple watchers are still wondering what big move Tim Cook and his team will make with the Beats acquisition. While there is no definitive answer just yet, there is a lot of speculation around some of the recent hires that Apple has made in the UK.

Following on from Apple’s hiring of the former  BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, a number of BBC back room staffers have also been hired (reports Music Business World):

One of this foursome is believed to be Lowe’s old producer at Radio 1, James Bursey. Bursey is understood to have left the Beeb on Friday and is now headed to Los Angeles to team up with Lowe.

Three more BBC producers are set to join him at Apple – but working from the company’s London office. They will enter Apple’s doors after the completion of Radio 1’s One Big Weekend event, which takes place on May 23-24. Names rumoured to be on Apple’s shopping list include Natasha Lynch and Kieran Yeates – both considered star producers at Radio 1.

Curiouser and curiouser…

Apple Adds Yet Another Title: Largest Dividend Payer in S&P 500

Apple Adds Yet Another Title: Largest Dividend Payer in S&P 500

The world’s biggest company just became the biggest source of dividends in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Apple Inc. raised its dividend by 10.6 percent to $2.08, putting it on the hook for about $12.1 billion in annual payments, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and S&P. That eclipses the $11.6 billion sent out in dividends each year by Exxon Mobil Corp., the previous title holder.

Three years after restoring its dividend, Apple has become a company known on Wall Street as much for bequeathing cash to investors as it is for its iconic devices. The dividend boost was announced as part of an expansion in its capital return program to $200 billion, including $140 billion in buybacks.
“It speaks to the success of the brand and their product that they’re generating so much cash,” Peter Jankovskis, who helps oversee $1.9 billion as co-chief investment officer of Lisle, Illinois-based OakBrook Investments LLC, said by phone. “They still have ample cash to continue growing the company and researching and releasing new products.”

On an annual basis, Apple’s dividend went up by $1.16 billion, good for the 20th largest increase in the history of the S&P 500, according to data compiled by Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices. Viewed as a $9.9 billion boost in its payout, Apple’s restoration of its dividend in March 2012 was the biggest increase on record.

Buyback Data

Apple’s $50 billion increase in its buyback authorization boosted the total repurchases announced by American companies to a record $133.6 billion in April, data compiled by Birinyi Associates Inc. show. So far this year, buybacks have amounted to almost $400 billion, with February, March and April accounting for three out of the four busiest months ever.

While Apple has been praised by activist shareholder Carl Icahn for returning cash, he’s been pushing for more. Icahn has argued that Apple is undervalued and should be trading at $203 a share, which would give the company a market capitalization of more than $1 trillion.

Apple jumped 1.8 percent to $132.65 during regular trading. After the company released results after the market close, the shares climbed 1.3 percent.
“At this point, it makes sense for them to be in the mode of listening to their shareholders and returning capital to them,” Jankovskis said. “It’s a positive development for shareholders and it reflects the maturation of the company.”
