Rumor: Apple has an updated 4-inch iPhone due early next year

It could combine the power (and metal) of new iPhones with the smaller size of older ones.

Want a handset with Apple's fancy new A9 processor, a colorful metal case and a slightly smaller display? GHI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo says you're going to get one. According to the analyst's latest research, Apple is on track to launch a 4-inch Apple 5 successor in early 2016 -- painting the picture of a device with the same A9 processor as the iPhone 6s, NFC support for Apple Pay, a metal case with multiple color options and a $400-500 off-contract price tag aimed at the budget market.

If real, the device could be a welcome followup to Apple's "unapologetically plastic" 5c smartphone -- retaining the smaller footprint of the iPhone 5/6 and still integrating some of the best tweaks introduced with the 6s. Still, take the rumor with a grain of salt: Ming-Chi Kuo has a decent track record when it comes to Apple predictions, but he isn't always right.

Apple boosts buybacks, earnings beat on strong iPhone sales

The firm also announced Monday that it would expand its capital return program to USD 200 billion from a previously announced USD 130 billion.

Apple reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations. The company reported second-quarter earnings of USD 2.33 per share on revenue of USD 58 billion on Monday. Analysts expected tech giant Apple to report earnings of USD 2.16 a share and USD 56.08 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters. During the same period last year, Apple posted earnings of USD 1.66 per share on USD 45.6 billion in revenue.

'These are amazing numbers' The firm also announced Monday that it would expand its capital return program to USD 200 billion from a previously announced USD 130 billion. This estimated figure comes from Apple increasing its share repurchase authorization to USD 140 billion from the USD 90 billion announced last year, and boosting its dividend 11 percent to 52 cents per share. The planned program goes through March of 2017, Apple said.

CEO Tim Cook said on the firm's earnings call that the buyback reflects "our strong confidence in what lies ahead for Apple." The tech giant said its cash horde had risen to a record USD 193.5 billion—over USD 171 billion of which was located offshore. Last quarter the total cash figure came in at USD 178 billion, according to the company. Apple's stock rose more than 1 percent in after-hours trading immediately following the Monday announcements.

"How long do we ride this rally? As long as possible," said Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki.

As for its devices, Apple said that it had sold 61.17 million iPhones, compared to a StreetAccount consensus estimate of 57.26 million. Apple CFO Luca Maestri said demand for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus "has remained incredibly strong." The company said it sold 12.62 million iPads, compared to expectations of 13.94 million.

Mac units came in at 4.6 million (compared to a 4.64 million estimate). Cook touted the year-over-year growth of its Mac products while much of the personal computer industry languishes. "We are thrilled by the continued strength of iPhone, Mac and the App Store, which drove our best March quarter results ever," Cook said in an earnings release.

Cook told CNBC that he is "very confident" that iPad sales "will come back" (although he declined to predict on the call when this would occur), and he also said he's happy with the Apple Watch performance so far. The CEO said on the call that the response to the new wearable device has been "overwhelmingly positive," and boasted of the more then 3,500 apps that are already available for the product.

He later added that demand is "hard to gauge," but it is outstripping supply for the product. The company anticipates selling the Apple Watch in additional countries by June, he said. Maestri said that margins on the wearable product will be lower than company average.

You can now control PowerPoint for iPhone with your Apple Watch

Microsoft today updated its PowerPoint for iOS app with a rather bizarre update: remote Apple Watch support. You can download the new version now directly from Apple’s App Store.

We say this addition is “bizarre” because, well, why would anyone want to control PowerPoint on their iPhone from their Apple Watch? This PowerPoint app also works on the iPad, and we would argue it makes more sense to control a presentation on your tablet from your wrist than a presentation on your smartphone.

Here is the changelog so you can try to make sense of it yourself:

PowerPoint Remote for Apple Watch: control your slide show on iPhone with a beautifully simple app.

Start your slide show and easily navigate to the next and previous slides.
At a glance, see the elapsed time, the current slide number and total number of slides.
To be fair, Apple Watch apps are really just extensions of iPhone apps — it’s likely much harder for Microsoft to bring the functionality to the iPad. Also, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have much larger screens than their predecessors; maybe some will find it useful to practice PowerPoint presenting.

If and when Apple allows Microsoft to develop full-blown apps for the Apple Watch, it would be much more useful to see Office Remote christen the wearable. Back in November 2013, Microsoft released Office Remote for Windows Phone, a significantly more useful tool.

In short, Office Remote lets you control Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents on your PC. Earlier this month, Microsoft released the same app on Android.

Today’s PowerPoint for iPhone update is interesting, but we suspect Apple users would appreciate a full-blown Office Remote for iOS app much more, and not just because it would support Word and Excel as well. Controlling PowerPoint presentations on your PC (or Mac!) from your Apple Watch, iPhone, or iPad just makes a lot more sense.
