How to hand off Mail, Messages and more from Apple Watch to Mac

Conducting an Apple Watch-to-Mac Handoff procedure is very similar in form and function to Apple's existing Continuity features, which themselves enable Handoff from Apple Watch to iPhone. In fact, the process requires both an iPhone and Mac to function, each properly configured and networked, with Watch essentially serving as a remote control.

First, Handoff needs to be activated on Apple Watch, as well as its paired iPhone and a target Mac. For Apple Watch, the option to toggle Handoff can be found in the Apple Watch iPhone app under My Watch > General > Handoff. For iPhone and Mac, the process is detailed in AppleInsider's step-by-step guide to enabling Handoff in iOS and OS X Yosemite.

Once Handoff is enabled and all devices are associated with the same iCloud account and connected to the same Wi-Fi network, it's simply a matter of opening a compatible Apple Watch app. Current first party titles include Calendar, Mail, Maps and Messages.

When a desired app is running on Apple Watch, its corresponding Handoff icon will appear to the left of the OS X Dock (or top, depending on Dock location), identical to iPhone and iPad Handoff procedures. For example, opening an email on Apple Watch will invoke a Maps icon with small Apple Watch glyph on Mac. Clicking the Mail Handoff icon on Mac will open a Mail window for that specific message, as seen below.

Users can also explore Maps queries in greater detail. Opening Maps on Watch and searching for "Apple HQ," for example, drops a pin on Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. With Maps still running on Watch, clicking on the Maps Handoff icon on Mac will bring up a Maps window mirroring the location displayed on Watch.

Watch Out Apple Inc.: Xiaomi Enters The Accessory Market In Europe And US

Xiaomi Corp. is often regarded as the premium smartphone manufacturer in China, operating on levels similar to what Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) does in America. In other words, its China’s local version of Apple. Having a reputation of being the third largest smartphone distributor to support it, it’s no surprise the company is starting to move inroads in foreign markets.

Having already penetrated into the Indian market, by providing more value for money smartphones than the existing competitors in the market such as Micromax, the next step for the Beijing-based company is to test the waters in the US, UK, France, and Germany, since it opened its online store Mi.com in these countries.

Although primarily famous as a company that produces smartphones, Xiaomi will be offering four products for what it calls its, “test beta sale”. Products that currently going up for sale include a $14.99 fitness tracker called the Mi Band, which is compatible with both Android and iOS running smartphones, and a pair of headphones which cost a handsome sum of $79.99.

Along with these are two variants of power banks; a 5000mAh model priced at $9.99, which is capable of charging an iPhone 5s twice over, and a more beefier 10,500mAh version, that is priced at $13.99. Along with the availability of these products, the company is asking users to create accounts, and has claimed that only a limited quantity of the products will be available.

Xiaomi has not revealed when its smartphones will grace these markets. However, one is quick to realize the potential legal and patent issues with industry rivals, that they can bring with themselves. Xiaomi is very much aware of the existing industry structure, and it believes the existing popularity of carrier deals in Europe and America has made it difficult for them to break into.

The decision to offer accessories at first is likely to work in favor of the Chinese company, since sales of these products will point out to whether they should take the next step towards expanding and distributing other products, most notably smartphones in these markets.

Xiaomi has been heavily criticized of copying Apple’s designs and this perception isn’t likely to change looking at comparisons of their various phones with the iPhone. However one thing this Chinese company does do is provide phones at almost half the price, when compared to major smartphone manufacturing companies like Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (NASDAQ:SSNLF). This is likely to attract an audience for its products, making the launch of Xiaomi smartphones almost inevitable.

The company is currently valued at $45 million, with projections indicating it is likely to ship 100 million smartphones this year.

Apple Inc. (AAPL), Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), Facebook Inc (FB) Among Top Technology Picks of Billionaire Michael Hintze

Sir Michael Hintze’s CQS Cayman LP has filed its 13F with SEC for the reporting period of March 31, with the fund having an equity portfolio valued at $2.13 billion as of the reporting date. Financial News recently awarded Hintze the title of Best Hedge Fund Manager in Fixed Income and Credit category, and his primary investments are in the health care, consumer discretionary, finance, and industrial sectors.

The top ten stock holdings of the British-Australian fund manager account for 51.46% of his portfolio’s value. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Adobe Systems Incorporate (NASDAQ:ADBE) are among its technology stock picks, which we will discuss in this article.

CQS Cayman is just one of more than 700 hedge funds that we have in our database, whose 13F filings we collate quarterly as part of our small-cap strategy. Even though most smaller investors believe that tracking 13F filings is a fruitless endeavor because they are filed with a delay of a maximum of 45 days after the end of a calendar quarter, the results of our research prove that is not the case.

To be on the safe side, we used a delay of 60 days in our backtests that involved the 13F filings of funds between 1999 and 2012 and we still managed to gain an annual alpha in the double digits. Moreover, since the official launch of our strategy in August 2012, our small-cap strategy has obtained returns of more than 139%, beating the S&P 500 Total Return Index by over 80 percentage points (see the details).

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the largest technology stock investment of CQS Cayman. It owns 194,951 shares of the iPhone-maker with a market value of $24.26 million. The investment manager added heavily to the position during the first quarter, purchasing 186,172 of those shares. According to a recent report from Good Technology, Apple Inc. was the global leader in enterprise device activations during the first quarter of 2015.

The iPad maker had a 72% share in worldwide enterprise device activations in the quarter followed by Android devices with a 26% share. This could be the big enterprise leap Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was looking for and it might help the company compete with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) in the enterprise device market. The tech giant will release its HomeKit iOS 8 framework next month, which will allow users to control connected home accessories. Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn remains the largest Apple shareholder in our database.

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) is a new stock investment of the fund manager and consists of call options underlying 200,000 shares of the tech company, with the position having a market value of $16.39 million. Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) is a company active in the information technology (IT) security sector whose shares have increased by 9.8% year-to-date.

Some of the primary services of the company include firewall, intrusion prevention system, Anti-Bot, Application Control, and virtual private network services. As per the recent IDC Worldwide Security Appliance Tracker survey, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) was the market leader in combined Firewall and UTM appliance revenue during the financial year 2014. Generation Investment Management, Iridian Asset Management and Ken Griffin‘s Citadel Investment Group are among some of the leading investors of the security company.

What's Up With the 'Secret' Apple Watch Port?

The Apple Watch has a "hidden" charging port in one of its slots for connecting to a watch band, according to accessory maker Reserve Strap.
Blocked by a metal cover, the mystery port isn't listed in Apple's documentation for its new smartwatch, The Verge noted on Monday. Previously, the mystery door had been described as a "diagnostic port."

Now Reserve Strap claims to have cracked the secret, saying the metal cover hides a 6-pin port which can be used to charge the Apple Watch much faster than via the wireless, inductive charging the device is designed to do out of the box. The accessory maker has designed a watch strap packing a battery that it says will connect to the 6-pin port to charge the Apple Watch more quickly and efficiently than through inductive charging.

Reserve Strap recently said that its "discovery" of the secret port has caused it to scrap a wireless charging battery strap in favor of a "completely rethought design that takes advantage of the 6-pin port underneath the band slide of the Apple Watch."
"This port hadn't been deciphered by anyone until now but we've been able to make significant enough observations so far to warrant shifting our development focus to this new method. We're looking forward to sharing more design details and technical specification of this new Reserve Strap as soon as we can," the company added.

But will Apple allow just anybody to take advantage of a port it has walled off from prying eyes?

Getting the metal cover off the port is apparently difficult enough to have stymied the efforts of the teardown specialists at iFixit to do it without resorting to brute force.

"Apple could disable the port or cripple it for outside parties through a future Watch OS firmware update," The Verge opined. "Then, all possibilities for docks and accessories that plug into the port would immediately vanish. If Apple won't be using this port for its own accessories, it's doubtful the company will let anyone else cash in."

Reserve Strap said it will include a tool for opening the port with its battery strap for the Apple Watch. The company is also promising that its engineers are testing a charging solution for the 6-pin port which won't disrupt key functions of the smartwatch.
"By utilizing this port instead of wirelessly charging, we've been able to achieve a higher charge capacity and quicker, more efficient charging times while also improving durability and eliminating any interference with Apple Watch functionality including taptic feedback and heartrate sensors," Reserve Strap said.

The Reserve Strap battery band will be available in white, gray, or black this fall for both the 38mm and 42mm versions of the Apple Watch, the company said. Reserve Strap is taking pre-orders for its $249 battery strap now.

Apple boosts buybacks, earnings beat on strong iPhone sales

The firm also announced Monday that it would expand its capital return program to USD 200 billion from a previously announced USD 130 billion.

Apple reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat analysts' expectations. The company reported second-quarter earnings of USD 2.33 per share on revenue of USD 58 billion on Monday. Analysts expected tech giant Apple to report earnings of USD 2.16 a share and USD 56.08 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters. During the same period last year, Apple posted earnings of USD 1.66 per share on USD 45.6 billion in revenue.

'These are amazing numbers' The firm also announced Monday that it would expand its capital return program to USD 200 billion from a previously announced USD 130 billion. This estimated figure comes from Apple increasing its share repurchase authorization to USD 140 billion from the USD 90 billion announced last year, and boosting its dividend 11 percent to 52 cents per share. The planned program goes through March of 2017, Apple said.

CEO Tim Cook said on the firm's earnings call that the buyback reflects "our strong confidence in what lies ahead for Apple." The tech giant said its cash horde had risen to a record USD 193.5 billion—over USD 171 billion of which was located offshore. Last quarter the total cash figure came in at USD 178 billion, according to the company. Apple's stock rose more than 1 percent in after-hours trading immediately following the Monday announcements.

"How long do we ride this rally? As long as possible," said Ross Gerber, CEO of Gerber Kawasaki.

As for its devices, Apple said that it had sold 61.17 million iPhones, compared to a StreetAccount consensus estimate of 57.26 million. Apple CFO Luca Maestri said demand for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus "has remained incredibly strong." The company said it sold 12.62 million iPads, compared to expectations of 13.94 million.

Mac units came in at 4.6 million (compared to a 4.64 million estimate). Cook touted the year-over-year growth of its Mac products while much of the personal computer industry languishes. "We are thrilled by the continued strength of iPhone, Mac and the App Store, which drove our best March quarter results ever," Cook said in an earnings release.

Cook told CNBC that he is "very confident" that iPad sales "will come back" (although he declined to predict on the call when this would occur), and he also said he's happy with the Apple Watch performance so far. The CEO said on the call that the response to the new wearable device has been "overwhelmingly positive," and boasted of the more then 3,500 apps that are already available for the product.

He later added that demand is "hard to gauge," but it is outstripping supply for the product. The company anticipates selling the Apple Watch in additional countries by June, he said. Maestri said that margins on the wearable product will be lower than company average.
