Financial News recently awarded Hintze the title of Best Hedge Fund Manager in Fixed Income and Credit category, and his primary investments are in the health care, consumer discretionary, finance, and industrial sectors.

CQS Cayman is just one of more than 700 hedge funds that we have in our database, whose 13F filings we collate quarterly as part of our small-cap strategy. Even though most smaller investors believe that tracking 13F filings is a fruitless endeavor because they are filed with a delay of a maximum of 45 days after the end of a calendar quarter, the results of our research prove that is not the case.

To be on the safe side, we used a delay of 60 days in our backtests that involved the 13F filings of funds between 1999 and 2012 and we still managed to gain an annual alpha in the double digits. Moreover, since the official launch of our strategy in August 2012, our small-cap strategy has obtained returns of more than 139%, beating the S&P 500 Total Return Index by over 80 percentage points (see the details).

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is the largest technology stock investment of CQS Cayman. It owns 194,951 shares of the iPhone-maker with a market value of $24.26 million. The investment manager added heavily to the position during the first quarter, purchasing 186,172 of those shares. According to a recent report from Good Technology, Apple Inc. was the global leader in enterprise device activations during the first quarter of 2015.

The iPad maker had a 72% share in worldwide enterprise device activations in the quarter followed by Android devices with a 26% share. This could be the big enterprise leap Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was looking for and it might help the company compete with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) in the enterprise device market. The tech giant will release its HomeKit iOS 8 framework next month, which will allow users to control connected home accessories. Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn remains the largest Apple shareholder in our database.

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) is a new stock investment of the fund manager and consists of call options underlying 200,000 shares of the tech company, with the position having a market value of $16.39 million. Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) is a company active in the information technology (IT) security sector whose shares have increased by 9.8% year-to-date.

Some of the primary services of the company include firewall, intrusion prevention system, Anti-Bot, Application Control, and virtual private network services. As per the recent IDC Worldwide Security Appliance Tracker survey, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHKP) was the market leader in combined Firewall and UTM appliance revenue during the financial year 2014. Generation Investment Management, Iridian Asset Management and Ken Griffin‘s Citadel Investment Group are among some of the leading investors of the security company.

Apple Watch goes on sale worldwide amid supply shortage

(Reuters) - The Apple Watch goes on sale around the world on Friday, the final stage of a protracted launch of Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook's first new product, capping months of publicity and a frenetic two weeks of pre-orders.

Buyers can take the smart watch home from a handful of upscale boutiques and department stores, such as The Corner in Berlin, Maxfield in Los Angeles and Dover Street Market in Tokyo and London, which Apple courted to help position the watch as a fashion item.

But the watch will not be sold at Apple stores on Friday. The company is directing people to order online, which should prevent the lines around stores that generally greet new iPhone and iPad launches.

The lack of queues at Apple stores will make it hard to judge popular demand for the Apple Watch, which comes in 38 variations with prices ranging from $349 for the Sport version to $10,000 and more for the gold Edition.

Apple has not released any numbers since it opened for pre-orders on April 10, but many buyers were told their watches would not arrive for a month or more as supply appeared to dry up.

Wall Street estimates of Apple Watch sales vary widely. FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives raised his sales estimate this week to 20 million watches from 17 million, based in part on online order backlogs.

"There was a question over whether the trajectory and demand for wearables in the Apple ecosystem was there and real," said Ives. "But it's a resounding yes."

Apple itself said on Wednesday that some customers will get watches faster than promised.

"Our team is working to fill orders as quickly as possible based on the available supply and the order in which they were received," Apple said in a statement.

The Cupertino, California company previously predicted that demand would exceed supply at product launch.

Here's what you can do on the Apple Watch without your iPhone

Apple Watch all alone: what can it do? Not a lot -- it's mainly an iPhone accessory -- but there are some key things that it can handle on its own.

The Apple Watch is, first and foremost, an iPhone accessory. It might be even more than that eventually, a truly independent gadget, but a vast majority of its current core functions -- making calls, sending messages, getting information, even playing any third-party games -- require your iPhone to be on, have Internet service, and be paired with the Watch via Bluetooth or a shared Wi-Fi network. If you're thinking about getting one, make sure you know that. It requires an iPhone 5 or later, and it can't even be set up without one.

Still, the Apple Watch can do a few things without your iPhone around -- more than I even realized. I left my iPhone behind and went for a stroll with just the Apple Watch to try it out.
Here's everything the Apple Watch can do when away from your iPhone:

Music

The Apple Watch has 6.2 GB of available storage, of which 2GB can be used to store music. You sync music with Apple Watch via your iPhone and the Apple Watch app, no Mac or iTunes required (but, the music must be on your phone in the Music app, or in iTunes in the Cloud). Once your music is synced, you're free to listen as long you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones. I paired a few sets easily via the Apple Watch's Bluetooth settings. In the Apple Watch Music app, you need to Force Press and select "Source" as Apple Watch. Once that awkward step is done, music plays just like on an iPod.

Fitness

Apple has two built-in fitness apps called Activity and Workout, and both work away from the iPhone. You can measure heart rate, too. Activity tracks steps, time spent standing, and active exercise. Workout allows timed exercise sessions that measure pace, distance, heart rate, and calorie burn estimates for various activities. The only thing you can't do away from your iPhone is track your walk or run with GPS: that requires your iPhone. Third-party fitness apps can't be used away from your iPhone, either. In fact, all third-party apps -- those not created by Apple -- need an iPhone connection to work

Apple Pay

Once you set up a credit card for Apple Pay to work on Apple Watch, it keeps working even when your iPhone is not attached. Double-click the flat side button, and you can tap to pay at any Apple Pay-ready store. It's easy to use and addictive. If the watch is taken off your wrist, you'll need to enter a passcode to use it again. Because Apple Pay doesn't use your actual credit card number, you can cancel it from your iPhone and deactivate your Apple Watch's Apple Pay function, even if the watch isn't online at all.

Passbook

You can store, boarding passes, tickets and gift cards in Passbook in the form of QR codes, and it's a great alternative to Apple Pay for a lot of stores and services. It's easy to open your cards and tickets, and QR codes even get brighter when you display them, for easy scanning.

Photos

There's a small photo album app on the Apple Watch that stores up to 500 photos from your phone library or iCloud. It's hard to see pics on the small screen, but it's a cute replacement for the itty-bitty wallet photo.

Alarms, timers, world clock, stopwatch...and watch faces

Apple has several timer and clock apps apart from the stylized watch faces, which also work when your iPhone is disconnected and offline. You can use Apple Watch like a full-featured chronograph and watch, or as an alarm clock. And of course, you can use Apple's own beautiful watch faces, too, which will still tell time.

Reading messages, recent calls and even offline voice mails

You can't make phone calls away from your phone, but you can see who's called recently, and read already-sent texts. Shockingly, you can even listen to voice mails! The Apple Watch syncs visual voice mail, and most of them will play back on my watch even with Airplane mode turned on. You won't be able to receive new messages without connecting your phone again, but at least you can browse missed connections.

That's it for now

Hopefully, someday, the Apple Watch will use its Wi-Fi antenna to get data on its own, or to pair with other devices like the Apple TV and Macs (it already has an Apple TV remote mode, but it's somewhat simple in its range of function).

First Apple Watch health IT apps bring important messages to the wrist

Many of the first Apple Watch health IT apps will give doctors faster access to critical information and ease communication between health care providers, while other apps will attempt to get patients more engaged with their health.

Don’t expect doctors to glance at their wrists to view X-rays or a patient’s chart, though. Given the Apple Watch’s screen size, functions that involve text messages work best on the device.

“Doctors get that the watch is a tool to help them deal with information overload,” said Michael Nusimow, CEO of drchrono, which makes EHR (electronic health record) software.

Like many other companies in the health space, drchrono announced its app this week at a large health IT conference put on by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, a nonprofit that looks to use IT to improve medical care. About a dozen companies in the health care industry announced their Apple Watch apps this week.

EHRs can overwhelm a physician with troves of data on a patient, Nusimow said.

With drchrono’s Apple Watch app, doctors can receive relevant and important information, such as when a patient arrives at the office. The app can also provide them with the patient’s vital statistics and pictures.

The watch is better suited for tasks like getting text notifications, while the iPad and iPhone, which drchrono also has apps for, can handle functions that require bigger screens, like reviewing charts, Nusimow said.

Watches are more socially acceptable than smartphones, making them ideal to handle messages and notifications, said Vik Kheterpal, principal at CareEvolution, which develops the technology behind health information exchanges.

CareEvolution worked with health insurance provider Anthem to develop its Apple Watch app, which was announced this week. The app, called cFHR, is designed to provide Anthem customers with timely health information. The app, for example, will remind patients to check their blood pressure or alert them about possible medication interactions.

While the iPhone can complete the same tasks as the Apple Watch, there’s a nuanced difference between the devices, Kheterpal said.

People depend on smartphones to instantly convey information. But as the devices have become larger, people may find them a bit cumbersome to constantly remove from their bag or pocket. Plus, some aspects of smartphones, like the devices inopportunely ringing, are social taboos, he said.

The Apple Watch, by comparison, is an extension of the phone, always on a person’s wrist and reliably delivers notifications, Kheterpal said.

The Apple Watch won’t replace the iPhone, said Nate Gross, co-founder of Doximity, a startup that operates a social network for U.S. physicians.

With its app, Doximity was looking to offload some functions to the watch, but save a majority of the tasks for the iPhone.

“We focused on messaging because in the clinical setting, there are a number of times when you just don’t want to take out your phone to start texting,” said Gross.

In some situations, doctors may find that speaking is a better option that typing, he said. For instance, they may prefer to dictate patient notes instead of type them into an iPhone.

While an iPhone app can receive messages, doctors may not hear the phone or feel it vibrate if they place the device in their pocket or lab coat, said Gross.

Doximity’s app, which was announced last week, allows physicians to view messages sent to them from other doctors who use the company’s social network and also to receive alerts when a fax arrives.

In health care, “time is tissue” and delivering alerts to a person’s wrist may help a doctor view an urgent message more quickly, he said.

Some physicians who work long hours may need to extend the Apple Watch’s 18-hour battery life to the get the most from their health IT apps, Gross added. Emergency room doctors and medical residents can work 24-hour shifts.

Some may purchase third-party watch bands equipped with batteries while others will charge the device during their shifts, he said.

“We will see friction occur on battery life for very specific doctors rather than doctors as a whole,” said Gross. Physicians aren’t accustomed to owning watches that require nightly charging, he added.
