Rumor: Apple has an updated 4-inch iPhone due early next year

It could combine the power (and metal) of new iPhones with the smaller size of older ones.

Want a handset with Apple's fancy new A9 processor, a colorful metal case and a slightly smaller display? GHI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo says you're going to get one. According to the analyst's latest research, Apple is on track to launch a 4-inch Apple 5 successor in early 2016 -- painting the picture of a device with the same A9 processor as the iPhone 6s, NFC support for Apple Pay, a metal case with multiple color options and a $400-500 off-contract price tag aimed at the budget market.

If real, the device could be a welcome followup to Apple's "unapologetically plastic" 5c smartphone -- retaining the smaller footprint of the iPhone 5/6 and still integrating some of the best tweaks introduced with the 6s. Still, take the rumor with a grain of salt: Ming-Chi Kuo has a decent track record when it comes to Apple predictions, but he isn't always right.

T-Mobile Taking Preorders for Upcoming LG G4 Smartphone

Customers making preorders will get see their phones ship before they go on sale in T-Mobile stores on June 3 and will get a free 128GB memory card for their phone.

T-Mobile is now accepting preorders for the upcoming LG G4 flagship smartphone and is telling preorder customers that the company will ship their new handsets before they go on sale on June 3 in T-Mobile stores.

G4 buyers are also being offered a free 128GB memory card from LG and T-Mobile for their new phones if they buy their phones before June 21, while supplies last, according to the companies.
The phones can be preordered at T-Mobile.com for $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $24.99 (total $599.76). T-Mobile is offering the LG G4 with a brown leather rear cover.
The LG G4 launched in Korea on April 29 in a move to take on the Apple iPhone 6, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and others.

The G4 includes a 5.5-inch quad HD In-Plane Switching (IPS) Quantum display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 16MP rear camera, an 8MP front camera and a 3,000mAh removable battery. The smartphone runs on Android 5.1. The G4 is the first to use LG Display's new 5.5-inch IPS Quantum display, which offers 20 percent greater color reproduction, 25 percent improvement in brightness and 50 percent greater contrast than previous displays, according to LG. It includes Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology, which combines the LCD and touch sensor into a single layer to provide better color reproduction and touch sensitivity, and it is calibrated for DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) standards for improved color reproduction.

The G4's new 16MP camera promises to capture great images, even under low-light conditions, using an F1.8 aperture lens that allows 80 percent more light to reach the camera's sensor, LG said. Also included is improved OIS 2.0 image stabilization for blur-free images.

The high-resolution 8MP front-facing camera aims to give users sharper, more detailed portraits and group shots than they can take with cameras on other phones, which typically have much lower resolution. Users can trigger the shutter by opening and closing a hand twice in front of the camera.
The G4 smartphone also gets new styling cues compared with the previous G3 phone, including new covering materials, such as handcrafted full-grain leather in six colors. The phones can also be purchased with ceramic rear covers instead of leather.

The design of the curved G4 builds on what LG calls its Slim Arc, which runs along its entire body, highlighted by a display with a subtle curvature, according to LG. The slight curvature offers 20 percent better durability than a flat smartphone in face-down drops and gives the smartphone a more comfortable and secure feel in the hand.

The G4 measures 5.86 inches long by 2.99 inches wide, and is 0.24 to 0.38 inches thick, depending on its materials. The new devices also include LG's latest human-centric UX 4.0 user interface, which eliminates unnecessary steps while providing more configuration options for advanced users, such as a Quick Shot feature that allows users to take a picture without opening the camera app by double-tapping the phone's Rear Key while the display is off.

Sprint also recently began accepting preorders for the G4, according to a recent eWEEK report.
Sprint is offering the G4 in Metallic Gray or black leather through the company's Website, via telephone and in Sprint stores. The LG4 will be available to Sprint customers on June 5.

LG G4 is out: Snapdragon 808 SoC, Quad HD display and all the key features

While Samsung boasts about metal and glass in its flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, LG has opted for handcrafted leather and human-centric features in its G4. LG today unveiled its flagship G4 smartphone at launch events in New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Istanbul and Seoul.

“We wanted to give consumers a truly human-centric device that combined the analog sensibilities with technologies that delivered real world performance. From the design to the camera to the display to the UX, this is the most ambitious phone we’ve ever created,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

The LG G4 sports a Slim Arc design. “Slim Arc offers 20 percent better durability than a flat smartphone in face-down drops and gives the smartphone a more comfortable and secure feel in the hand,” explained LG in a release.

The LG G4 is available in handcrafted, genuine full grain leather in six colors. “The vegetable tanning process employed is an age old tradition that requires skilled craftsmen to produce and dye the leather. The colors of the leather on the G4 are rich with warm tones that look authentic and change over time,” according to a statement. Other material options for the G4 rear cover include pure Ceramic White with 3D patterns, artisan-forged Metallic Gray and Shiny Gold.

The G4 sports a 5.5-inch IPS Quantum Display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels at 538 PPI and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Running on a 1.8 GHz hexa-core Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 CPU with Adreno 418 GPU, 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage that can expanded up to 128GB, the G4 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system. The device is powered by a 3,000mAh removable battery.

On the camera front, the device offers a 16MP rear camera with dual-LED (dual tone) flash and an 8MP front camera. “The camera module features a wide F1.8 aperture lens that allows 80 percent more light to reach the sensor. LG improved low-light performance even further with OIS 2.0, which doubles the performance of the improved OIS+ by expanding the range of image stabilization from one degree to two degrees on the X- and Y-axis and adding a third axis for the first time,” according to a statement.

LG G4 is the first phone to use the new human-centric UX 4.0. Here are a few highlights:
■ Quick Shot allows customers to take pictures without opening the camera app by double tapping the phone’s Rear Key while the display is off.

■ The new Gallery makes it extremely fast to scroll through thousands of pictures and view them on a timeline. The Memories feature automatically organizes photos and videos into event albums based on the time and place they were taken, without having to upload to the cloud.

■ Event Pocket allows users to create one, unified calendar by dragging and dropping appointments and activities from multiple calendars and social media sites.

■ The improved Smart Notice provides more personalized notifications for weather, travel and more by analyzing habits, such as how a user commutes to work. This allows Smart Notice to issue personalized messages such as, “Make sure to take an umbrella on your way to the subway.”

■ Quick Help allows users to search for instant answers to any questions about operating the LG G4, right in the Smart Notice widget. Quick Help can guide users through the LG G4’s settings and even schedule a call with customer service.

Good old Nokia plans a comeback to mobile market in 2016: report

Nokia, the company that once dominated the Indian phone market, had succumbed to the fierce competition from Samsung and Apple. While we thought the company has already turned to ashes, a new report now claims that Nokia is far from dead and planning to make a comeback in 2016.

Citing two sources related to the matter, Re/Code reveals that the company will join the mobile market as early as next year. It isn’t just mobile market, but Nokia reportedly also plans to foray into ‘ambitious technology product space’ including virtual reality.

Now, if you are wondering how is it possible since Nokia sealed the deal with Microsoft and sold its devices and services to the software giant. The report says that this move is driven by Nokia Technologies, which is the smallest of the three businesses that remain after the Microsoft deal. Nokia Technologies is known for licensing the company’s portfolio of over 10,000 patents.

“Unlike other patent houses that do little more than license intellectual property, Nokia Technologies has designed new products and licensed them to other companies. So far, these ambitions have been small in scale,” adds the report.

This division launched two products namely, Zlauncher program and the N1 Android tablet design that is being sold in China by another manufacturer using the Nokia brand name. It is believed that this tactic will be used by Nokia to bring other devices in the market too.

Richard Kerris, a former Nokia executive has told the news site that ‘Nokia is a company that is not going away’ and ‘people will be blown away if some of the stuff he saw comes to market’.

However, all this won’t come until late 2016, owing to some negotiations between Nokia and Microsoft. The Finnish company can sell smartphones under the Nokia brand only after December 2015.

“The company can’t license its brand for any smartphones until after Q3 2016. The N1 appears to take advantage of a loophole that allows for the Nokia brand on tablets,” points out ReadWrite.

Recently, Nokia was also rumoured to have agreed to acquire Alcatel-Lucent in a bid to take on Ericsson. The company is also considering to sell off Here Maps.
