4 Tips to Improve Your Product Feed for Advertising

We are now in era in performance marketing where the quality of a marketer’s own data is a critical driver of advertising success. This is particularly evident in retail, where product listing ads (PLA) are often the largest share of the paid media budgets. Those ads are powered by the content that lives in the retailer’s product feed.

Due to the fact ad content is dependent on the product feed, the marketing department needs to take a more active role in the development and management of the feed content, much like it has done with SEO over the past few years. Here are some easy steps (often only one-time work!) to take without requiring significant coding expertise or investment in costly feed management and optimization tools:

Normalize product variants, especially product colors, as consumers who search for products online frequently use these.

Merchandisers have all kinds of interesting ways to describe the colors of their products to stand out from their competition.

Some of the more popular I’ve seen are "tangerine," "sea foam," and "azure." Sure, tangerine is a cool name for a color in the print catalog, but people aren’t often looking for a "tangerine" dress on Google. Here’s a quick update for better match rates:

Once you’ve translated your internal colors to primary colors, this should be a simple find-and-replace in your feed.

Remove extraneous information, especially from your product titles.

Online shoppers (outside of B2B procurement specialists) rarely look for retail products by their product ID, SKU#, ISBN code, etc.

If this kind of information is in your product titles, then you are hurting your keyword density and ultimately your relevance. You will pay higher CPCs for the same position and your ads won’t be as enticing to the end shopper. Better to scrub this stuff as there are typically columns in your feed for them specifically.

Always include the product category in your product titles.

People generally look for stuff online, not abstract concepts. While "Betsey Johnson Mermaid" sounds nice, it typically doesn’t connect to search behavior. At the very least let the shopping engines know that it is a cocktail dress.

Categorize your products deeply, especially your most popular ones.

Categorization is critical to the engine’s awareness of what types of queries your products are relevant for. Many merchandise categorization schemes do not align well with those of the engines. Clearly it is challenging to reclassify thousands of products to meet the needs of Google or other publishers, but doing this well for your best-sellers, at the least, will go along way to ensuring that your nest products show up when you need them to.

Summary

There are obviously much more sophisticated techniques to apply to feeds that would further improve the relationship between the product data and how consumers search. However, if you are light on tech resources, don’t feel like you are stuck with what you have.

Remember that these are your ads and they need to be treated with the same care and respect as your more "creative" ad units. Some of the quick techniques above can be the difference between success and failure in PLA and related channels.

Personal B2B PPC – 5 Things You Need to Ensure Success

Oh, how the buying process has changed with B2B. According to Sirius Decisions, more than 67 percent of the customer’s buying journey is now done digitally, and 57 percent of the actual purchase decision is complete before a customer even contacts a supplier.

And why is this? Because marketing is no longer about B2B, or even B2C. Marketing is now about being there when the buyer is searching – it’s about "B2Me."

B2B marketing has become more of a personal buying journey. Buyers are empowered – they do extensive research and use social channels to get reviews and support from peers. They are no longer waiting for a salesperson to call them. They take the first step in the buying cycle. And with longer sales cycles and competition, it’s important to use strategic inbound tactics such as paid search to lead your prospective clients to purchase from you.

Marketing in the B2B world isn’t easy. And with paid search, it can get even more complicated. Keywords can be very expensive and competition is very intense. However, there are things you can put in place that can help with your B2B paid search. Here are some key points to keep in mind to guide buyers through their purchase decision process.

1. Be the Buyer’s Caretaker

Taking care of your buyer means providing them relevant content that answers their questions. With paid search ads, it’s important to speak to their pain points. What keeps them up at night? What problems are they trying to solve? Use language in your ad copy that they understand and that is relevant to their industry.

Think of being the buyer’s concierge. You assist them, help them make decisions, and provide them with everything they need through their journey.

2. Use Offers That Lead to the Next Step

With B2B, it’s important to provide some type of offer that will speak to what the buyer is searching for. It’s all about providing the right information at the right time. Whether it’s downloading a white paper or reading a case study, ensure the offer will take the buyer to that next step in the nurture process.

3. Use Retargeting

Retargeting is a great way to reconnect with people that have been to your site, whether they have converted or not. With paid search retargeting, it’s an idea way to remarket to B2B customers with a special offer or promotion. It’s another way to create a "personalized" experience for the buyer.

4. Long-Tail Keywords

Looking further down the funnel are the long-tail keywords that can be your opportunity for success. People using long-tail searches are more apt to be closer to buying. Focus on what happens at the bottom of the funnel, and ensure you have the right ad copy in place. Use your SQR reports to find additional keywords to add to your campaigns as well.

5. Know Who Your Buyers Are

Persona-based marketing provides insights on your target buyers. With more decision-makers in the buying process and buying becoming more self-directed, it’s important to know who your buyer is, and how to best connect with them.

But what’s a buyer persona? It’s a model of an atypical buyer and their buying behavior. This helps companies target their ideal buyer, and helps the sales team target the hotter prospects. Conducting in-depth buyer research, creating buyer personas, and understanding your buyer’s goals can be a time-intensive process. But gathering these insights on your customers can help you laser-focus your paid search marketing efforts to the right audience.

SEO Reports Putting The C-Suite To Sleep? Bring Out The Graphs

Columnist Purna Virji provides examples of visual aids which can help key stakeholders understand your SEO progress at a glance.

Let’s face it… long SEO reports can be tedious to read.

However, SEO reports are also vital components of what you do — so how can you help key stakeholders (like the C-suite) absorb salient information and better understand the value you bring without putting them to sleep at their desks?

The answer is simple. Compile your profit and loss (P&L) data into eye-catching graphs. As we all know, a picture paints a thousand words — and visual data in the form of succinct, attractive, and easy-to-digest graphs can answer the executives’ core questions on performance and trends with just a quick glance.

Want to create SEO reports your C-suite execs want to read? Here are some graphs that will brighten their day.

Quick Note: If you aren’t able to get revenue data from your clients, you can use conversions as an acceptable substitute in the graphs below.

The Weekly SEO Graph

Graphs are not only refreshingly easy to read and process, they are also refreshingly easy to create. So there’s no reason why you can’t be updating your executives with new graphs every week.

These will help the C-suite feel in the loop, give them the confidence you are adhering to plan, and can also help make your case if you’re in need of some additional resources for the month.

Creating graphs couldn’t be simpler, as you can use the data you already collect:

Take leads or conversions as well as revenue (if you have this) and plot them by week.
If you have goals or revenue targets, plot these alongside the former, so executives can see at a glance how you’re tracking week to week.

In addition, show your progress as well as your current performance by mapping it out on a rolling 90-day basis.

The best part? Once you have the graph set up, it only takes a minute or two each week to put together.

Kick It Up A Notch

You could further enhance this weekly report by adding in annotations to highlight all key developments and actions, to help answer the “why” behind the “what.”

This information-rich graph answers several questions that would otherwise take huge chunks of text to explain (and send your bosses into slumber). Here are some of questions an annotated graph can answer:

How’s our current performance?
How have our efforts progressed?
What has correlated with significant dips or increases in performance?
From an audience perspective, a graph like this only takes around 90 seconds to read (something the C-suite can easily slot into their day) but will leave viewers with an in-depth understanding of the situation. These graphs are also great for kicking off SEO team meetings to quickly get everyone on the same page.

The Monthly SEO Graphs

Monthly reports share a higher-level view of P&L progress with the executives, allowing them to assess your monthly performance and view your upcoming strategy.

There are a few different ways you can present monthly information in an eye-catching graph. This first bar chart shows revenue progress month by month in comparison to your goal.

Here’s how to create it:

Choose a time frame that best suits your needs. A six-month view is usually sufficient, but you may need to adjust depending on your client.
Plot the actual revenue-by-month data for these six months (including the latest month).
Plot the forecasted — or alternatively, trended — revenue data for the upcoming two months.
If you have monthly goals, plot these within the graph as well.

This graph is helpful because all key past performance data is right in here; the executives won’t have to search for and open up previous monthly reports to get a view on performance. Plus, with the addition of the forecast for the next 60 days, we can set expectations for performance to come.

Another easy-to-digest way to present monthly information is in the form of a line graph. The following example drills even deeper into your performance, plotting revenue performance against goals for the past month and also looking at projections for the coming month.

The graph shows month-end performance and revenue expectations by week for the upcoming month, while annotations outline what strategies will be deployed and when, as well as how this will impact revenue.

You can easily put together a graph like this in five minutes using the data you already have. Here’s how:

Break the current month and the next month into weekly chunks.
Start by adding your actual revenue into the graph.
Then, if you have revenue goals, plot these, too (or else use some projection data).

Other Benefits

Using graphs in your SEO reports is win-win for every party. CEOs will discover that looking through SEO reports can be a pleasure, not a chore, saving their time and giving them the key information they need at a glance.

For SEOs, the graphs allow you to clearly demonstrate how your SEO work is directly helping the company to develop, aligning your goals with the top brass and earning you their trust and respect.

And that’s not all. Creating these P&L graphs and charts also you to better plan your monthly strategy by keeping revenue front-of-mind, so you can be more mindful in your strategy selection and prioritization process, ensuring you focus only on things that can have the biggest impact.

Last but not least, using visual aids significantly cuts down the amount of dry copy you need to write for reports. Making it not only quicker and easier for the execs, but also quicker and more enjoyable for you.

Mobilegeddon Checklist: How To Prepare For This Week’s Google Mobile Friendly Update

Are you ready for Mobilegeddon? Google is releasing the mobile friendly update on April 21st. Here is what you need to know.

The Google Mobile Friendly Update launches tomorrow, a day that many including ourselves here at Search Engine Land are calling “Mobilegeddon.” We first learned of Google’s plan to release a new algorithm designed to reward mobile-friendly web pages back in February. It’s unprecedented for Google to pre-announce a big algorithmic change like this, but Google did so in order to give publishers ample time to make their web sites mobile friendly.

The mobile friendly update will potentially give a ranking boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. Below you will find a list of common questions and concerns that have been answered over the past two-months around this algorithm.

Q: When is Google releasing the mobile-friendly algorithm?

A: The algorithm is launching tomorrow, April 21st. I checked in with Google this morning and they confirmed they are still on schedule with tomorrow.

Q: What is this algorithmic update, who will it impact?

A: This update will impact only mobile searchers and it will give a ranking boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results only.

Q: Will it impact desktop searchers? Will my desktop rankings drop?

A: No, it will only impact mobile searchers and will have no impact on your desktop rankings.

Q: Will it impact tablet searchers?

A: No, this only impacts searches done on mobile smartphone devices, not tablets.

Q: How do I know if my site is mobile friendly?

A: There are a few ways but the only way to know if your site is already indexed by Google as mobile friendly is to see if your site has the mobile friendly label in the mobile search results. Using the mobile friendly testing tool will show if you pass the test, but Google may still need some time to update their index to pick up on the fact that your web pages are mobile friendly. You can also the mobile usability reports within Google Webmaster Tools, but those can be fairly delayed.

Q: Didn’t Google release a mobile ranking algorithm in 2013?

A: Yes they did,, but that was specific around core issues accessing a mobile site, this is expanding on that around mobile usability issues.

Q: When did we first hear about these new mobile ranking changes?

A: In December 2014, Google told us they are experimenting with a new mobile friendly ranking algorithm.

Q: Is the mobile friendly algorithm site-wide or on a web page by web page basis?

A: The mobile friendly algorithm is on a page by page basis. So even if only some of your web pages are not mobile friendly, some come benefit from this algorithm.

Q: Is this a real-time or delayed algorithm?

A: Unlike Panda or Penguin, the mobile friendly algorithm is run in real time. Sometimes the mobile friendly label can be delayed in showing up in the search results, but Google will pick up on those changes in real time.

Q: If I make my site mobile friendly today, how long will it take Google to pick up on those changes?

A: As we said above, the algorithm is real time. We also explained above that Google has to crawl your web pages to determine if they are mobile friendly. Early tests show that it can take anywhere from a few hours to over 72-hours if you do everything right for Google to show your web pages as mobile friendly. I would not be surprised if large sites can take up to a month to be displayed as fully mobile friendly. So make sure your most important pages are indexed as mobile friendly sooner than later.

Q: Will Google News, Local Results, In The News, Videos, be impacted by this algorithm?

A: No, only the core web search results will be impacted, not the local pack, not Google News or other vertical searches, until those departments decide to make a change.

Q: Can you be partially mobile friendly according to Google?

A: No, a web page is only mobile friendly or not mobile friendly, you cannot be more or less mobile friendly than another web page. It is a yes or no on being mobile friendly or not.

Q: Will my non mobile friendly web site drop in the rankings tomorrow, April 21st?

A: Not necessarily. Google said it can take a few weeks for the algorithm to roll out. So you might not notice the change for a few days to a few weeks.

Q: After it does roll out, how badly will my non mobile site be impacted?

A: Truth is, it is unknown right now. We were told it will be more significant than both the Panda and Penguin algorithms, which may mean that more than 11% of the search results will change from this.

Q: What about site speed? If my mobile site is slow but my desktop site is fast, will I be negatively impacted?

A: Currently no, you won’t. Several desktop signals still actually power mobile ranking. So slow mobile sites with fast desktop counterparts are one of those examples.

Q: Will large brand or navigational related mobile queries be impacted?

A: Not really. If a large brand has not gone mobile friendly and a searcher is looking for them in Google’s mobile results, Google will still likely rank that brand in the first position even if the page is not mobile friendly. Ultimately, relevancy is more important and it outweighs this mobile algorithm. So if Home Depot was not mobile friendly and you searched for [home depot] on your iPhone tomorrow, it would still rank number one.

Q: What if I’m the right answer but not a big site nor mobile-friendly?

A: The mobile friendly “signal” is, in the end, only one of many different signals that Google uses to rank pages. It may be that if you have the right page for a search, then you’ll still show regardless if you’re not mobile friendly. In fact, Google even gave Re/code a reassuring statement to this effect — that high-quality content could rank well, even if it’s not mobile friendly. Or course, it also could not rank well.

Q: Didn’t Android Apps already go live with this mobile friendly algorithm?

A: Yes, in February when Google announced the mobile friendly upgrade, Android apps installed on devices would benefit if the Android searcher is signed in. This past week, even non installed apps also began benefiting from this mobile friendly algorithm?

Q: What are the most common mobile SEO mistakes?

A: Google published a document with the top seven mistakes webmasters make when going mobile friendly.

Q: Will Google delist my site from search if I do not go mobile friendly?
A: Absolutely not. Although there are shady SEOs saying so.

Q: Do you need a special mobile sitemap file?
A: No, in fact, most mobile sites do not need a separate mobile sitemap at all.

Q: Will this impact AdWords ads?
A: No, this is only for organic listings, AdWords may have their own mobile factors but this is unrelated.

We’ll have more news about Mobilegeddon as it begins to rollout, so check back with us here at Search Engine Land. All our coverage on the topic can be found on our special Mobilegeddon / Mobile Friendly Update Page. By the way, at Search Engine Land’s upcoming SMX Advanced search conference, we’ll also be having a special session about the topic: Mobilegeddon! Surviving Google’s Mobile Friendly Update.

Bing Places Adds Several Agency-Friendly Local Business Listing Tools

Agency dashboard offers local listing management, sharing with clients, features for chain businesses and more.

Local SEO consultants and agencies that manage business listings for clients have a number of new, agency-friendly tools at their disposal in Bing Places for Business.

According to Bing’s announcement, the first step is for consultants to register as an agency at BingPlaces.com.

Once registered, agencies will have access to a new dashboard with a summary of all current listings and links to add new client locations — up to 10,000 businesses at once. The dashboard shows both the total number of business listings submitted, how many have been published and how many are in review or were suspended.

Agencies will be able to share access to individual listings with clients.

Another new option is the ability to register chain business locations. Bing says these don’t have to be verified individually, but consultants will need to provide a signed authorization from their client (the chain business).

In fact, Bing is trying to build in a level of security throughout the agency tools:

After you submit your clients’ business listing to Bing Places, your client must verify the listing, which helps us ensure that you are authorized to manage their information. During client verification, a verification PIN is sent by postcard to each of your clients. Either you or your client then must enter that PIN on Bing Places to complete verification.
We’ve reached out to Bing’s communications teams to find out if this is available only in the U.S., or also for Bing Places users in Canada and the U.K.

Postscript: Bing has confirmed that these new tools/features are available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, India, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Austria and Mexico.

5 Tips to Leverage Yahoo Gemini for Mobile PPC

The story for Yahoo continues. What chapter of this book we’re on, I don’t know - I’ve lost track. When Yahoo and Microsoft inked the Search Alliance deal, Yahoo’s position as innovator in the world of PPC all but evaporated. Sure, Yahoo still had its premium display, but that was it.

Fast-forward to the present. Search Alliance is still intact. In fact, Yahoo found a way to contribute more to that partnership through its deal to become the default search engine within Mozilla Firefox. Through all of this, Yahoo has somewhat quietly been rolling out the Gemini platform. We’re more than 1.5 years into the Gemini experiment, and it has emerged as an intriguing channel that is a hybrid of mobile search PPC and native advertising.

You may be asking, "But John, Yahoo is locked into the Search Alliance! It can’t do its own PPC platform." Yes, yes it can. Yahoo has new Web property in the form of smartphone and tablet apps that came about after the Search Alliance. This is where the mobile PPC portion of Gemini lives. Now there is a real third option for mobile PPC outside of AdWords and Bing Ads.

Without further ado, here are five tips for getting the most out of Yahoo Gemini for mobile search PPC:

1. Choose Keywords, Not Audiences.

Because Gemini is a hybrid of mobile search and native advertising, there are multiple targeting features as your disposal. You are set to target both search and native by default, so you have to take an extra step to isolate mobile search ONLY.

Link Risk Management: Are You Using This Critical SEO Tactic?

Columnist Stephan Spencer warns that if you don't regularly monitor your backlinks and proactively get rid of spammy ones, you could be risking it all.

Over the past five years, Penguin is arguably the Google algorithm update that’s had the greatest impact on webmasters. Since Google launched the first Penguin update in April 2012, hundreds of thousands of sites around the world have been penalized and have virtually vanished from the Internet (or at least their traffic has).

Webmasters the world over scrambled to clean up dubious links pointing to their sites. Even after going through this stressful, time consuming, and oftentimes frustrating experience, webmasters continue to search for more efficient and effective ways to keep their websites from getting caught in Penguin’s crosshairs as Google continually re-defines what constitutes a “good” link.

One vital concept in keeping your sites or your clients’ sites safe from the dreaded Penguin is that of managing the levels of risk within your backlink “portfolio.”

Introducing Link Risk Management

Link risk management is a natural outgrowth of the changes that have affected SEO in the last few years.

SEO is not just an investment in better visibility and higher rankings. SEO is the primary way to protect your Internet “assets.” Unfortunately, just like in most other spheres of life, people tend to wait for something bad to happen before they do something to protect themselves.

Do you really want to go through all the stress, time, and cost of recovering your site from a Google penalty? My advice would be, “better safe than sorry.”

You can insure your home or your car against damage, but how do you protect your organic web traffic? Link risk management is one of the ways you can insure your organic traffic — and the income that results from it — against Penguin-related damage.

Link risk management includes:

1.Recovering your site from a Google penalty (if necessary)

2.Protecting it from bad backlinks and “negative SEO”

3.Building safe backlinks

4.Making steps 2 and 3 a continuous process

Recovery

Only webmasters who were hit by a Google penalty know the stress and desperation one experiences before seeing a penalized website return in the search results. Many sites that depended primarily on organic traffic for revenue lost everything they had overnight, and their companies have vanished from the Internet.

Is it possible to recover from a Google Penalty?

Yes; whether you were hit by a Google manual or algorithmic penalty, it is possible to recover.

Google gives you an “appeal” with their Disavow Tool.  In theory, the procedure is actually pretty simple. Find all of your existing spammy or poor quality backlinks, put them in a disavow file, and upload it to Google Webmaster Tools.  After some time, your site should recover, and you will get some of your visibility and visitors back.

As I said, in theory, recovering from a Google penalty is pretty simple; in practice, it takes a lot of time and effort on your part. You could be looking at countless hours of work and frustration, which could extend to months of tireless effort, particularly if your first disavow attempt is rejected.

Following is the procedure for recovering from a Google penalty:

Step 1: Collecting Your Backlinks

This is not always easy because even Google provides only a portion of all your backlinks. The Google Webmaster Tools backlinks information is never comprehensive — so, if all you do is analyze just those links, you will never get out of the penalty box.

To collect and summarize all of your links, I recommend using multiple tools, because each tool covers different (though sometimes overlapping) parts of the link graph. I would include link data from LinkResearchTools (in particular, the Quick Backlinks Tool), Majestic, Ahrefs, Moz’s Open Site Explorer, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Google Webmaster Tools.

Download links from all of these sources and then remove the duplicates before analyzing each link.

Step 2: Analyzing Your Backlinks

Before you even start analyzing your backlinks, you should learn which links violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines on linking. After that, you can start with your personal analysis.

This is not a huge job if you have just a few hundred backlinks. You can check each one manually, taking note of which ones come from spammy or irrelevant sites.

The problem gets serious when you have thousands — or even millions — of backlinks. There are tools available to help automate this process. My preferred solution is running the Link Detox tool from LinkResearchTools, then confirming its determination by hand-checking a random sample within each of the risk levels. I manually analyze a larger and larger sample size of links as the rating gets less “risky.” In other words, I look more closely at links rated “moderate” risk than those rated “deadly” risk.

Step 3: Get Rid Of Low-Quality Links, Disavow The Rest

Once you’ve put together a list of “risky” backlinks, you should make every effort possible to get those links removed from their respective websites. This could mean manually removing links over which you have control, or reaching out to webmasters to remove links over which you do not have control.

After you’ve done all you can to clean up your spammy backlinks, you can put the remaining ones into a file and “disavow” them using the Disavow Tool in Google Webmaster Tools. This will signal to Google that you do not wish for these links to be taken into consideration when assessing your site.

Step 4: Waiting For Google’s Response

If you’ve receive a manual penalty from Google (i.e. a “manual action”), you will have to file a reconsideration request and wait for them to review it. This can take anywhere from several days to several months.

If you were hit by a Google algorithmic penalty, you will have to wait for the next Google algorithm update — which can take even longer than a reconsideration request response. As you may recall, we all waited for more than a year for the last Google Penguin update. Fortunately, it appears that Google now updates their algorithm continuously, or at least more frequently.

Recovery is possible, but it will cost you money, time, and stress. And even if you achieve a recovery, don’t bank on returning to pre-penalty traffic levels right away. Thus, your company may continue suffering significant financial losses. You may even face bankruptcy if your business only has an online presence and it depends primarily on Google organic traffic for its customers.

Protection

Just like with any kind of insurance, you hope that you never need it, but it’s better to be prepared than not. For webmasters, the “insurance policy” is to protect your site from the possibility of Google penalties — versus trying to recover from one after you’ve been hit.

The only way to keep your website safe and Penguin-proof is by proactively engaging in proper link risk management. This means keeping track of your backlink profile, regularly checking it for new links and removing or disavowing the spammy ones.

There are many reasons why you should constantly monitor the risk level of your backlink profile:

Even if you have successfully recovered from a Google penalty, your site is not immune to new Google penalties.

Your site gets new backlinks every day, and many of them come from bad neighborhoods.
Despite some controversy, negative SEO is real and is happening all the time. Someone determined enough to hurt you can destroy your reputation with Google — and thus, your organic traffic.
Building New Links
Monitoring your backlink profile and disavowing or removing poor backlinks is not enough. In addition to those bad links you remove or disavow, you must always be building or attracting new links.

By and large, we are responsible for most of the risky links in our own backlink profiles. The kind of link building Google has always wished us to engage in has always been difficult and time-consuming, and many webmasters didn’t have the time or patience to build high-quality links.

For years, SEOs built links that, while they may have increased rankings in the short term, were never intended by Google to benefit rankings. Many sites are now paying the price for that kind of shortsighted link building.

Basic safe link building techniques are:

Create and promote: great content; revolutionary business models; stellar products, prices, or services; interesting news stories, etc.
Find your competitors’ strong and healthy links. Analyze locations, connections and techniques they used. Replicate their experience and build safe links.
Analyze potential backlinks and great places from which to get a link using professional tools.
Review Your Work
Link monitoring doesn’t have to always lead just to disavowing poor quality links. A good SEO will know when to disavow or undisavow a backlink. For any given subdomain, you can have only one disavow file in Google’s Disavow tool, but you can change it whenever you want. You can add new links or remove old ones that maybe were bad a year ago but now they are actually good (though this is fairly rare).

Your backlink profile is like a living organism. A bad backlink from yesterday could be a good backlink today.  For example, if you disavowed backlinks from de-indexed, infected, abandoned, or spammy sites, the link may no longer be considered spammy. De-indexed sites could now be indexed again. Infected sites may have recovered from malware. Abandoned and spammy sites could become clean and safe again.

It may be you have disavowed backlinks from link networks or from fresh sites. The the web changes constantly and it may be that from the day you disavowed a fresh link on a brand new site until now, many of these links could have become valuable (or at least not risky/spammy looking). Sites from link networks could change ownership and host location and no longer be part of the “network.”

It’s difficult enough to obtain new links. If you engage in effective link monitoring and you notice that a backlink is safe again, just undisavow it (remove it from your disavow file).

Conclusion

It’s no longer optional to monitor the risk of your backlink profile continually. Yes, it can be extremely difficult and time consuming (especially if you do it manually), but I assure you that dealing with the fallout of a manual or algorithmic penalty is a lot more difficult and time-consuming.

The web is ever evolving. Google regularly changes the rules of the game. You can choose to adapt, or you can stand by and watch your organic traffic disappear. You can’t afford to be blind to the risks. Insure your organic traffic by instituting link risk management.

Google Shares AdWords “Store Visits” Metric Conversion Lift Data

US retailers saw, on average, 10 times more conversions from mobile search ads when accounting for store visits estimated conversions.

In December, Google launched the “store visits” metric as part of Estimated Total Conversions to help multi-location businesses tie the influence of  their AdWords ads to in-store visits. Wednesday, the company released data on what businesses are seeing from this new metric.

In a blog post, Surojit Chatterjee, Google’s Director of Product Management for Mobile Search Ads, says that US retailers measured 4 times more conversions overall and 10 times more conversions on mobile, on average, when including store visits data. Advertisers in the US travel and auto verticals saw 2 times higher conversions when including the store visits data — driving consumers to a dealer lot or hotel.

Businesses are then using the data to inform their mobile bidding strategies. Cosmetics retailer Sephora found that mobile Adwords clicks drive an 18 percent higher store visit rate than desktop clicks. The company says it improved return on ad spend by 25 percent after optimizing mobile bids accounting for the store visits lift from those ads. Similarly, restaurant chain Buffalo Wild Wings saw an 84 percent lift in conversion after optimizing bids incorporating store visits data.

Google is not alone in offering solutions to tie the connection between mobile advertising and in-store activity — quantifying what we intuitively know is happening. But, the search giant has a lot riding on being able to make the case that mobile search ads are worth investing in as more networks and apps compete for advertisers’ share of wallet on mobile.
Store visits is an estimated metric based on sampled and anonymized data from smartphone users that have Location History enabled on their devices. As with all of the measurements under the Estimated Total Conversions umbrella, Google says the estimate thresholds are held to a “strict, highly conservative confidence level”.
Google is also testing a “store transactions” metric to report on actual sales derived from clicks on Adwords mobile ads, but has yet to release any updates on its release.

Google Says The Penguin & Panda Algorithms Still Require Manual Data Pushes

It has been over 4 months since a Google Penguin or Panda update and Google's John Mueller tells us the data updates are currently done manually.

For those of you wondering what is going on with Google’s popular Panda update and Penguin update, you are not alone. In short, it has been quiet and there have been no confirmed updates or data refreshes for either algorithms since 2014.

Yesterday, in a Google hangout, Google told us that the algorithms aren’t updating regularly, that someone at Google kind of has to push them out manually.

Google’s John Mueller said:

I think both of those algorithms [Panda and Penguin] currently are not updating the data regularly. So that is something for both of them, where we kind of have to push the updates as well.
According to my records, the Panda 4.1 was the last Panda update and it was tweaked and rolled out over several weeks with the last one being around October 24, 2014 – or over 5 months ago. With Penguin, we tracked several updates through December 6, 2014 and there have been none since – which brings us to over 4 months for a Penguin refresh.

Of course, those sites impacted negatively by either algorithm wants a refresh to see if they have recovered. Without a data refresh, their sites cannot recover from the algorithm. Of course they may see small increases or fluctuations in their rankings due to other Google algorithms but they won’t see a full recovery until the algorithm is refreshed.

When will that happen? Your guess is as good as mine but I suspect Google is working on it.
