What Google's New Quality Assessment Update Means For SEO

At the beginning of May 2015, thousands of webmasters noticed significant ranking volatility—some rising, some falling, and some just noticing their competitors juggled around in a new order. As you can imagine, this fueled rampant speculation as to whether this was part of some new Google GOOGL -0.64% update, if it was a temporary experiment, or if it was just some hiccup in the search engine’s typical data processing.

Immediately, search marketers turned to the possibility of a Google Panda refresh. Since the last major update from Google was the “Mobilegeddon” update at the end of April, it seemed unlikely that this was the result of some major algorithm update. Plus, since Panda hadn’t seen a refresh in some time, search marketers assumed that it was long overdue. Google, however, immediately dispelled the rumors by announcing that the temporary search volatility was not Panda-related.

It took some time before Google officially confirmed the source of the update, but it finally did. After a few weeks of being unofficially named the “Phantom Update,” thanks to its lack of official acknowledgement, Google recognized that yes, there had been some fundamental changes released to the core algorithm.

The New Quality Assessment

Panda and Penguin, the two most noteworthy updates in Google’s history, were intended to improve results for users with one function in mind: weeding out spam that annoyed and complicated users’ searches. This new unnamed update, which I’ll call the “Quality Update” (in line with other search marketers) takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on penalizing or eliminating spam, it only introduced a handful of new quality assessment indicators that help Google understand how “good” or how authoritative a site is. Essentially, there are new factors that Google uses to determine how worthy a site is to rank.

What New Factors Are in Effect?

Google is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to the specifics of its ranking algorithm—in fact, it’s even holding firm against pressure from multiple European government forces. It certainly isn’t going to explain the inner workings of its system just because you asked nicely. Most of the factors we knew before the update are only known to us because of skilled trial-and-error-style experiments done by dozens of search marketers over the course of months.

Now, we aren’t even sure whether Google has added new ranking factors. It might have only rebalanced the factors that were already there, making some factors more important and some less important, or making minor tweaks to the process the algorithm uses to calculate those factors.

Hyundai to Take Voice Search to the Open Road

Accessing Google Maps and navigating Google Now's voice search while driving just got a lot easier for Android users with 2015 Hyundai Sonatas.

Hyundai is offering a free software upgrade to owners of 2015 Hyundai Sonatas with navigation that will use Google Now geo-location-targeted voice search based on Google Maps users' past searches, calendar entries, and home and office locations to offer location suggestions. The upgrade will integrate Google voice search with the Sonata's touch screen navigation system. The new software will also integrate other Google Apps, such as Google Play, along with third party apps, like Skype, Spotify, and NPR.

While Google announced plans to work with several automakers to integrate Google apps into vehicles earlier this year, Hyundai is the first to integrate the technology into its cars. A spokesperson from Hyundai tells Search Engine Watch that the company chose to pilot this program with Google instead of a competing search engine or operating system because of Google's "speed and accuracy."

However, Hyundai has not shelved plans to work with Apple to offer app and search integration to iPhone users, the spokesperson tells Search Engine Watch, and will soon offer CarPlay, a similar product from Apple, in its vehicles. "Hyundai and Apple are committed to delivering drivers the best possible experience while using CarPlay in their vehicles. We are currently working together to complete CarPlay integration, and look forward to making it available in the Hyundai Sonata soon."

Android Auto is currently only available to Android users with the Lollipop 5.0 operating system and must be obtained through Hyundai dealers. However, this summer, Sonata owners can download the update through the Hyundai website to a USB drive.

"World White Web" Seeks to Diversify Google Image Search

Johanna Burai, a student at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm, Sweden, recently noticed some serious whitewashing in Google Image searches.

According to Burai, an image search for "Hand" turns up over 800 results, but all of the hands, she noticed, were white. When searches for other body parts turned up similar results, Burai founded "World White Web" a website featuring six non-white hands that she hopes will be shared enough on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter to solve the problem on a micro level and effect change in Google Images on a macro level.

"In my project, I've simply used the most common way of search optimization for a website," Burai says. "That means sharing the images and the message through social media to reach out to as many people as possible and also tell people to upload the images on their own sites and link back to my website. The more sites that upload the images and link back to my site, the higher my site with the hand images will climb on Google."

Burai is using similar tactics that recently got Google into some serious hot water when the search engine linked racial slurs to The White House on Google Maps search results. However, World White Web could be Google's chance to redeem itself for last week's slip up.

While Burai says she'll probably have to wait at least three weeks to see results, she hopes her experiment will change Google Images for the better.

"It’s very easy to reveal the norms of society through Google Image search results," Burai explains. "I want to see a more diverse representation of the human body on Google."

Can You Reavow Links You Have Previously Disavowed?

Google's disavow tool is a mysterious thing. If you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with how it is used. To disavow links, we create a text file that contains either the URLs of the links you want to disavow or the entire domain of each link, upload the file to Google's disavow tool and trust that next time Google visits this link, they will apply an invisible no-follow tag so the link is no longer used in calculations made by the Pengiun algorithm.

But what happens if you decide that you have made an error and want to make changes to your disavow file? Can you reavow a link? The answer is yes. In this article we will discuss how to reavow a link and why you may want to do so.

How to Reavow a Link

Reavowing a link is as simple as removing the link from your disavow file and then resubmitting the file. For example, let's say that my disavow file looked like this:

#Unnatural links that we want to disavow
domain:ultra-spammy-directory.com
domain:spammy-directory.com
domain:good-directory.com
domain:another-spammy-directory.com

Now, let's say that we are re-evaluating our disavow file and we realize that we have accidentally disavowed a good directory link that is probably a valid citation. To ask Google to reavow this link, we would create and submit a new file that looks like this:

#Unnatural links that we want to disavow
domain:ultra-spammy-directory.com
domain:spammy-directory.com
domain:another-spammy-directory.com

When Will the Link Be Reavowed? And Does It Really Count?

When Google first told us that we could reavow links, it was widely believed that the link would start to count again the next time that Google crawled the domain that you had removed from your disavow. However, Matt Cutts has stated that Google has built a lag into the reavow feature of the tool. In a video, Cutts explained that reavowing a link can "take a lot longer," though no one knows how long that is. Google wants to be really certain that spammers are not going to try to figure out which links are helping or hurting them by doing disavow and reavow experiments.

When you are disavowing links, you can know that a link in your disavow file is considered disavowed once you see that Google has cached the page where the link resides. But when it comes to reavowing, we have no way of knowing when Google is going to start counting that link again or whether it will be given the same weight.

Most people believe that when a link is removed from a disavow file that at some point, Google will eventually start to count the link again as a normal link. But Matt says that the link may not be given the same weight it once had. Again, this is likely a measure to stop people from gaming the system.

Cyrus Shepard's Experiment

Most people who discuss reavowing links will bring up an excellent and gutsy experiment performed by Cyrus Shepard, who disavowed every single link to his website. When he did so, nothing happened. Then, when Penguin hit, he suffered dramatic drops in rankings. He reavowed all of his links by removing his disavow file, and now, two years after starting his experiment, traffic has not recovered at all. I asked Cyrus recently whether he had seen any improvement yet, and he sent me this image showing that things were still quite abysmal:

However, Cyrus himself admits that there are possibly some problems with his experiment. His site was the victim of a pharma-hacking attack, and it's hard to say whether this played a part in his ranking troubles. As with any SEO test there are other variables in play. As such, we can't take Cyrus' experiment and make bold statements proclaiming that a disavowed link can never be reavowed. Still, this experiment is a good warning not to play around with the disavow tool extensively.

I have been thinking more about when Matt Cutts says that a reavowed link may not be given the same weight as it had previously. I am wondering if perhaps Google has an algorithm in play that says that they will not count reavowed links if it looks like someone is reavowing to try to massively manipulate Google. In other words, perhaps in Cyrus' case the algorithm can detect that something fishy is going on because he un-disavowed 35,000 links all at once.

Perhaps if he only removed a couple of links from his disavow file, Google would be more willing to count those links again. Who knows...perhaps Google says that the more links you reavow the longer it will take for them to count again. If this is true, perhaps one day Cyrus will see his links start to count again and traffic increase dramatically. But this is just a theory. The point is that you should not be reavowing links without putting great thought into the process. And better yet, you should try not to disavow links that you might eventually want to reavow.

Examples of Links You Might Want to Reavow

Have I scared you off of reavowing links? If your goal is to disavow like crazy to get out of a penalty and then reavow the majority of those links, then hopefully I have dissuaded you from doing this.

I have seen several situations where a link was disavowed by mistake. If you relied solely on an automated link auditing tool to make your disavow file, then there is a good possibility that you have disavowed some links that are not unnatural. An unnatural link is one that you, or an SEO company acting on your behalf, made in order to manipulate Google. I've seen automated tools recommend disavowing fantastic links from high authority sites. If you've done this, then removing those links from your disavow file is a good idea.

Another example of a mistake that I have seen is a site that disavows itself. Don't laugh; I've almost done it myself. Fortunately I caught my mistake during a final check before disavowing. Alan Bleiweiss asked a Google employee whether this could cause problems. Apparently Google can determine whether you've disavowed yourself and can ignore this disavow directive. Still, if I noticed this mistake in a disavow file this is a link I'd be removing from the file!

I've also seen links that were disavowed by a well meaning SEO who was doing a manual review and assumed incorrectly that the link was unnatural. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether a link is a good one or not. If you see some links in your disavow file that you really do feel are natural, then go ahead and remove them and hopefully Google will start to count them again. I have to give a word of caution here though: I have found that it is very hard to be objective when making reavow decisions. I have seen webmasters who have done what I call "panic reavowing" where they reavow a bunch of borderline links because they have not seen an increase in rankings. This is probably not a good idea.

Another common area where links often need to be reavowed is when it comes to valid directory links. When I first started removing penalties I was probably a little bit overzealous when it came to directory links. I think that some of those links that I disavowed are ones that I wouldn't disavow if I was doing the same audit today.

Should You Customize Your SEO Strategy for Specific Niches?

Don’t let anyone fool you. SEO is not rocket science. There is a general formula with four major components to SEO that all SEOs follow if they want to be successful with their campaign: content, links, on-page optimization, and social media.

The big component that the success of your campaign hinges on is depth.

The appropriate depth of your efforts depends on the niche and by what your competition is doing. Developing an appropriate strategy requires thinking, analysis, and time.

As if that is not enough, you need to consider the different goals of SEO. Rand Fishkin on Moz covers these in much depth here: The 6 Goals of SEO – Choosing the Right Ones for Your Business, so I will only provide a tiny synopsis of the different goals: SEO for raw traffic, SEO for E-Commerce Sales, SEO for Mindshare and Branding, SEO for lead acquisition and direct marketing, SEO for reputation management, and SEO for ideological influence.

You must choose your tactics for SEO based on the goals you have set for your business, as well as the different depth in strategy required by your niche.

In order to beat your niche’s competition, you must first execute proper research for your niche, beginning with the general components of SEO: Market research, competitor research, keyword research, content, links, on-page optimization, and social media.

Market Research & Competitor Research
Who is your competition? How deep is the industry you are targeting?

You should never start an SEO campaign blind. But, you shouldn’t copy your competition exactly, either. Performing market research into your competitors will help reveal exactly how much of their content is gaining traction and social shares, how much of their strategy is being devoted to link acquisition, how much they are focusing on content, what keyword phrases they are targeting, and many tactics that will help aid you in dethroning the number one spot.

I must stress: avoid copying your competition’s strategy exactly. Unless you are a super advanced SEO, you don’t know how Google is going to react to a specific link or piece of content. The problem with copying a competitor’s strategy compounds itself in the form of SEO penalties.

By using the various SEO factors as indicators, rather than your overall exact strategy, you can still beat your competition by using white hat techniques that conform to Google’s guidelines. This will help you go after your niche effectively, and beat your competition. This can all be done without the worry of eventually falling under a Panda or Penguin penalty.

By the way, I know algorithmic changes make what some thought were good SEO strategies seem worthless. The thing is, what some people feel are good SEO strategies may actually fall into the area of gray hat or borderline black hat SEO.

Such myths have been perpetuated throughout the industry for so long that some believe they are solid strategies, when in fact, doing research into Google’s quality guidelines reveals they were never a solid white hat strategies. One example is that of link wheels, which falls directly under Google’s “link scheme” violation. When done too aggressively, you can be hit by Penguin. A usual good rule of thumb – if you doubt any particular link adds value and it’s only being done for SEO, don’t acquire it.

Keyword Research
What keywords is my competition using to drive traffic?

Finding the right keywords is the most important step of your SEO campaign. Keywords are the backbone of SEO and will drive your strategy – you should be researching your competition and how they are using keyword phrases. Not only should you be researching their on-page optimization and how they use these keywords, you should also be researching keyword phrases for search volume and how much traffic they will potentially drive to your site. Once you have built up the list of keywords, you can then begin setting up your editorial calendar and coming up with topics for your website.

Content Research
How much content are my competitors writing?

It’s not about creating content with the most amount of words, or content with the most amount of great ideas. It’s about creating interesting content that people care about, that they will want to share with their friends, and their friends will want to share with their friends.

People will NOT share boring content. This is called social amplification, and can greatly enhance the traction of any piece of content you write. (I will discuss the social component of content later in this article.) But, the fact remains, you should examine, as a general indicator, how much content your competition is creating, along with the kind of content they are creating that is successful.

How many words are they writing per article?

What is the general word count of the top competitors in that niche?

How many articles are they posting per week?

How many articles are they posting per month?

How are they using keywords in that content?

By analyzing your top 5-10 competitors and creating a spreadsheet with this information, you are now armed with appropriate information to take on the competition in that industry.

Link Research

Which competitors are under a penalty? Do they have bad link profiles?

Links are no longer the be-all, end-all SEO success metric they used to be, but they remain an important part of an SEO campaign. Which is why it is important to deduce the link profile of your competitors. Using tools like Cemper’s Link Detox, Google Webmaster Tools, AHREFs, and Majestic SEO, you can examine the strength of your competitor’s link profile. By doing this for the top 10 websites on Google, you can get a good idea of what links are driving value to these top 10 sites that Google is rewarding.

It is important to consider the penalty end of things: Do NOT use your competition’s link profile as an actual strategy. You can, however, use their link profile and go after sites that are of high value and high quality, and that conform to Google’s quality guidelines. By focusing on the quality sites in that niche, you can dethrone the higher ranking competitors by building your linking strategy around those sites Google considers valuable.

Remember, even link acquisition strategies will vary between niches. A niche with an expansive market in industrious cities like Los Angeles will require a much larger marketing budget in order to see effective ROI from these link acquisition efforts. A niche with a smaller market in Garden Grove, California and surrounding cities, with a lower competition level among keyword phrases, will require less link building in order to be successful.

This is why researching different niches and varying your SEO strategy between said niches is so important. Not only does this impact your link acquisition, it also impacts your keyword research! Every niche has its own jargon, and this impacts how people search tremendously. By performing your due diligence on this research, you can build an effective SEO campaign that delivers on the all-important return on investment that your client is expecting.

On-Page SEO
How is my competition using keywords on-site?

This is another biggie that can vary between niches, and can vary between keyword phrases widely based on how people are searching. One niche can require the use of highly technical keyword phrases in its copy, along with the use of synonyms and antonyms. Another niche can use extremely simple language that lends itself to the bare minimum of on-page optimization.

The important lesson in this part of your research is to learn the following on the top 10 sites on Google:

What is your competition doing with those keyword phrases on-page?

How are they being used in the title tag?

How are they being used in the Meta description?

How are they being used in the Meta keywords (no, Google does not use meta keywords for ranking, but they DO use meta keywords in the pre-indexation caching part of the ranking process)?

How are those keywords being used in the content?

What frequency of keyword phrases is being used? (Note: I am talking about frequency of keyword phrases for relevance, NOT keyword density. An important caveat here is if you follow your competition’s strategy for keyword phrases you also run the risk of a Panda penalty if their keyword use looks spammy.

Are their keywords being used on-page in a spammy way? Then create higher quality content that utilizes that similar keyword strategy.)
Even keyword strategy and on-page use can vary in frequency and scope depending on your niche, so it is important to spend time researching how your competition is using their keyword phrases on-site.

Social Media Research

How can I amplify the social reach of my content?

Social Media ResearchMuch misinformation and speculation has been perpetuated in recent years about social media, and its impact on rankings. So much so, that Matt Cutts finally – a year ago – had to put the kibosh on this with his video where he stated that there are no signals like that in Google’s search ranking algorithm:

Matt Cutts: Facebook, Twitter Social Signals Not Part of Google Search Ranking Algorithms

So where is the value of social? The value of social is through establishing trust and authority with Google by getting your content out to actual readers, which in turn impacts their knowledge graph in relation to your website and other content.

By using research as a thin indicator of what the competition is doing with social media, you can examine what is being successful in your industry:

Who re-shares content the most? This indicator can be used to establish who your new niche’s most influential people are on the network, and from there, you can gain insight into their followers and get them to share your content.

What kind of content is being shared the most?

What kind of content has the most actionable impact in general (likes, shares) across the big 4 social

networks: Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and LinkedIn?

When is content being shared/liked the most?

Why is specific content being liked and shared the most?

You can use tools like BuzzSumo to gain a full understanding of recent, shareable content across keyword phrases in your new niche, and Twellow to ascertain who the best influencers are. Then, examine how your competition’s content is performing across these social networks using the cues and indications mentioned above.

Without Customization of Your SEO Strategy, You Are Toast

Any Google search result can be as different as the keyword phrase itself, from singular to plural to its synonyms and antonyms. By performing your due diligence and researching your target niche, you can customize your SEO strategy. The customization of your strategy is an essential step, because boilerplate SEO no longer works. Search has gotten so complex in the last 5 years with multiple layers to Google’s algorithm, that it is no longer as simple as choosing a keyword phrase, optimizing your copy, submitting your site to a few directories, and moving on.

Search is now a major source of sales for many companies. It is only through due diligence, research, and customization of your SEO strategy that you will be successful. Not identifying your target audience and the intricacies of your niche early on can be costly for you – and your client.

Bing Will Roll Out Their Mobile Friendly Ranking Algorithm In The Upcoming Months

Bing Will Roll Out Their Mobile Friendly Ranking Algorithm In The Upcoming Months

Following Google's lead, Bing announces they will launch a mobile friendly algorithm, but this one won't be any Mobilegeddon.

Bing has announced they will be introducing their own version of mobile friendly ranking signals in the upcoming months. With that, Bing explained how they determine if a web page is mobile friendly, when they will add the mobile friendly label to your site and what tools they have to help webmasters ensure their sites are mobile friendly.

Unlike Google, Bing has not specified a date for when the mobile friendly algorithm will launch. Instead, Bing is taking a slower approach to it, in order to make sure to get webmaster feedback along the way. Bing team told me that they are doing this in order to better communicate the changes, over time, before it happens, to reduce potential anxiety with this change.

Bing has seen a shift in the mobile space in the past year and has focused their efforts over that time in building out mobile friendly factors for Bing mobile search.

Bing Mobile Friendly Tag
Last month, we discovered Bing testing the display of the Bing mobile friendly label in the Bing mobile search results. Bing said they have seen “great feedback” after testing this new label and based on this, they will be rolling out the label more broadly to mobile searchers.

Here is a picture of how it appears in the mobile results:

You can assume that if your site shows the mobile friendly label in the Bing results, that Bing recognizes your site as being mobile friendly and you would benefit when Bing pushes out this new algorithmic update.

Bing’s Mobile Friendly Algorithm
The new algorithm seems to work a lot like the Google Mobile Friendly update, which launched on April 21, 2015. But unlike Google, Bing won’t yet give a date for when their algorithm will go live. They want to give webmasters time to consume this news, as well as the Bing mobile friendly label and their previous advice around mobile friendly ranking techniques from last year.

Bing said, relevancy will always trump mobile friendly. So even sites that are not mobile friendly but are more relevant to the query can and will most likely still rank very well and better than non-mobile friendly web sites. This is because they are looking to strike the right “balance” between relevancy and user friendly search results.

Bing again has not provided a date for the launch, they also are downplaying the impact this will have on the mobile results. They obviously do not want this to turn into a Mobilegeddon media frenzy. Bing has not shared how many pages in their index are currently mobile friendly, or the potential impact this may have. But they did tell me they will share the date this will go live prior to rolling out the new algorithm.

Bing’s mobile friendly algorithm will be real time, so when you go mobile friendly, as soon as Bing crawls the new mobile friendly version of your page – you will benefit from the ranking algorithm.

Bing Webmaster Tools Mobile Friendly Tool
Bing is also launching a new tool later this summer for webmasters to test their sites. The tool will help “Webmasters to analyze webpages using our mobile friendliness classifier and help them understand the results.” The tool will likely work a lot like Google’s mobile friendly testing tool by providing a yes or no answer to if your site is mobile friendly and then suggestions on how to make your site mobile friendly if the answer is no.

The results of the tool should match what you see in the Bing mobile results with the mobile friendly label. With Bing, you are either mobile friendly or you are not, just like Google, there are currently no levels of degrees of mobile friendless.

The tool should launch sometime later this summer.

How Does Bing Determine If Your Page Is Mobile Friendly?
(A) Clickability of the navigation and buttons on your web site is one aspect. Are the buttons easy to press with a finger? Are they spaced out enough? Will users click on the wrong link by accident because the site isn’t designed for mobile users in mind?

(B) Can you easily read the content on the web page without having to zoom in or scroll the page left and right? The pinch and zoom desktop sites on mobile devices are not mobile friendly. You can define the font size and view settings in your HTML with viewport settings and so forth.

(C) Scrolling up and down is expected on mobile devices but scrolling left to right is not. You don’t want to have a side that you need to scroll left to view more of the content. It is not what users expect on mobile devices and is not user friendly.

(D) Does the content load on mobile devices? Flash is an example of content that is not mobile compliant. Flash does not render on mobile devices like iOS or Android. If your site cannot render on mobile devices, it is very likely that Bing will not show it to mobile users.

(E) Don’t block your CSS, JavaScript and other external resources from Bingbot or Bingbot mobile. The bots need to crawl these resources and files to render your full page in order to determine if it is mobile friendly. Blocking these files will prevent Bing from understanding your layout and prevent them from labeling your web pages as being mobile friendly.

Bing wants to hear your feedback, so go to Bing Listens to give them your two-cents.

Survey: Consumers Prefer Mobile Browser To Apps For Local Information

Data reflect competitive disadvantage for SMBs who don't optimize for mobile.

In the larger context of Google and now Bing’s Mobile Friendly algorithm updates comes a new consumer survey from SEO firm BrightLocal. The data show overall that consumer expectations of mobile sites, even for local business owners, have grown significantly since 2013.

While local businesses have alternative ways to be found in local search apps and vertical or specialized directory apps, the survey data here argue that consumers want to access local business websites on mobile.

While all survey data should be taken as merely directional information the following findings from BrightLocal are pretty clear: local businesses with mobile-optimized sites (that include the right information) will have a significant advantage over those that are not optimized.

Perhaps the most interesting finding in the survey of 900 US consumers is the idea that more people are using a mobile browser than apps or maps to find local business information. Accordingly these respondents expressed a greater inclination to contact local businesses with optimized sites — as one might expect.

The list of most important or desired local business information mirrors findings from earlier surveys by Google and others. Consumers want phone numbers, physical address and hours information to contact or visit these storefronts and locations.

By the same token, bad local site experiences or missing local business information will turn users away, according to these data.

Multiple surveys reflect a kind of consensus about the contact and other business information (NAP + hours) consumers are seeking via mobile search. I’m less persuaded by the idea that consumers always want a local business website when they search. Indeed much of the data they’re seeking is available in structured results at the top of Google.

Generally speaking mobile apps provide a much better experience and environment for local-business information than a browser (e.g., travel or restaurant lookups). I suspect, had the survey questions been more specific and investigated particular use cases, this would have come out. Nonetheless the browser preference is a striking finding and worth investigating with other surveys to see if it holds up.

Finally, it almost goes without saying that “browser” in this context is a stand-in for “Google.”

Google Steps on Map Maker Edits After Android Urination Incident

In case you missed it, a cyber graffiti artist recently daubed an image of an urinating Android on Google Maps. If you did miss it, you missed your chance, as Google is making sure that no one takes such a shot again and is prohibiting the editing of Maps.

This is why we can't have nice things. Google is really quite upset about the incident, and said that the company took action as soon as the image was brought to its attention.

Google then considered what further action to take and has now taken that action. In short, you are likely to see another Android going to the toilet on an Apple logo.

"As some of you know already, we have been experiencing escalated attacks to spam Google Maps over the past few months," said a post on the Map Maker product forum.

"The most recent incident was particularly troubling and unfortunate. A strong user in our community chose to go and create a large scale prank on the Map.

"As a consequence, we suspended auto-approval and user moderation across the globe till we figured out ways to add more intelligent mechanisms to prevent such incidents. All of our edits are currently going through a manual review process."

Belgium celebrates a similar image, in the form of the Manneken Pis, but Google definitely does not, and it is making sure that it will never be exposed, or see its users exposed, to such vulgar characterisation.

Manually checking edits for images of pissing robots takes time, and Google does not have the time to do it.

To be fair to everyone, because not everyone will be doodling toilet-wall like imagery onto Maps, Google is just going to stop anyone making an edit.

This will save time hunting for drawn dinkles and save proper users from wasting their time making edits that Google might not get around to seeing for a long time anyway.

It's a temporary thing that Google has put in place until it works out how to handle the digital tackle issue.

"Given the current state of the system, we have come to the conclusion that it is not fair to any of our users to let them continue to spend time editing," the firm added.

"Every edit you make is essentially going to a backlog that is growing very fast. We believe that it is more fair to only say that if we do not have the capacity to review edits at roughly the rate they come in, we have to take a pause.

"We have hence decided to temporarily disable editing across all countries starting Tuesday May 12 2015, till we have our moderation system back in action. This will be a temporary situation and one that we hope to come out of as soon as possible."

Technical SEO – It’s All About the Crawl

For about as long as I’ve been in SEO (12+ years), I’ve witnessed many, many people laying claim to “doing SEO”. From designers, to content marketers, to PPC folks, to PR folks, to social media folks. Everyone wants to be in the game.

That’s all well and good…these folks do have their place.

But, with SEO, it all begins with “the crawl”.

If search engines cannot crawl your website or index your pages, all of the content in the world isn’t going to move the needle much. You can even generate huge numbers of great backlinks, and you’re still going to be stuck in the mud.

Some websites are easy enough to get crawled. I mean, if your website is generally “static”, and built in a simple manner (WordPress with a few plugins?), you’re unlikely to experience any issues. However, there are still many instances where websites have a challenge in getting optimal indexation.

Case Study

Recently, my company brought on a new client who – by all appearances, and our initial analysis – was impacted by Google Panda WAY BACK in February, 2011/. The evidence seemed pretty clear:

For years, my client determined to move forward with “business as usual”, not giving SEO much thought or consideration. They were still making money through marketing themselves via PPC, email and other more traditional means.

Then they determined that it was about time to try to catch up with everyone else and devote some time, money and, yes, patience to the process of recovering their organic search presence.

This particular website is e-commerce and happens to be like many others who re-sell products; all of their product descriptions are shared amongst many others who also re-sell these identical products. “Easy enough”, we thought… we’ll rewrite a bunch of product descriptions, and then get on with the work of optimizing the results.

Not so fast.

As I’m sure many of you do, we kicked off the initiative with an “audit”. We wanted to take a holistic view of everything, in order to ensure a strategic approach to the effort. That was until we started to uncover a seemingly endless list of technical hiccups, missteps and redirections (literally) that led us to forgo the “typical process” and get much deeper into crawlability/indexability.

“Put first things first”, as they say.

Using the Wayback Machine, we were able to look back at the website, from December 2010 to February 2011 (analytics profile had been lost from this time period; developers who had worked on the website back then were no longer available for reference). This is what started our process of learning just what we had gotten ourselves into. Some “genius” decided that they should rewrite all of their URLs (insert a folder, for no apparent reason), stop using search engine friendly URL structure (ie: companyname.com/category/product/product-name) and then 302 redirect everything to these new URLs. That alone was/is bad. Then came a series of knee-jerk reaction to the losses that led to the implementation of just about every bad practice known to SEO.

We quickly re-wrote the copy that was promised, and threw away the “game plan”, to get down and dirty on some technical SEO.

First things first, we needed to see if bots could adequately crawl the website.

Google Webmaster Tools: While Google Webmaster Tools was in place, the Sitemaps were outdated. Rather than simply re-submit Sitemaps, we generated new Sitemaps, categorized by section of the website that we wanted to analyze (Main, Blog, XYZ Products, ABC Products, etc.). This is perhaps the best thing that we did. It helped us to isolate the areas of the website that was not getting indexed, fully.

Log File Analysis: We had suspicions that scrapers were actively targeting our client’s website. A log-file analysis confirmed this. We were able to isolate some IPs and block them from crawling the website. We also wanted to look for any tell-tale signs that bots were having difficulty crawling the website.

Content Analysis: Because we still believed that Panda could be in play, and we were able to identify many other websites with duplicate (stolen) content, we still needed to look for any instances where we may have created duplication within our own website. While not readily visible in many tools/crawls, by viewing cached versions of pages which we had determined were problematic, we were able to see that our client had “pop up” content indexed.

This pop-up content was important to the user (would they know if a product was out-of-stock, etc.) but this content also existed on every product page, whether or not the product was out-of-stock, or not. It was in Google’s cache. As a percentage, this “junk” content represented a large number. Perhaps half of their text content on their pages was related to a content being out-of-stock, or otherwise “not available”. You think the search engines like to read that? You think they’ll want to index those pages? Our thoughts? “Probably not”.

DNS Issues: As we dug deep into possible technical issues, we wanted to understand if there were any DNS issues for the domain. We wanted to ensure that there were no issues with the way the domain was set up as well as any roadblocks that may be present when the site is “called up” and the server must begin communication. We did find a slight issue at the DNSSEC level where delegation was lacking communication could not be validated. This was corrected.

Security of the Website/Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)/: Conducting some site queries in the search engines, we stumbled into an instance where we clicked through to the client’s website and received a message that the website “cannot be trusted”. We decided that we needed to check the website for any malware. For this, we used Zed Attack Proxy. As it turned out, the client’s website was – in fact – returning a “positive” (which really means “negative”) result to our test. And, as it turns out, it wasn’t really XSS but rather a “false/positive” result due to the way that their software performed various tasks in the backend. Still, though…if a tool is showing issues, why wouldn’t a search engine think that there are issues?

Mobile: There wasn’t a quick fix here, as the client is utilizing a mobile application and not (yet) running a responsive website. This is coming soon, but we are working with their mobile application to at least get some one-to-one mapping for all pages (currently, all pages in mobile will direct you to the home page, as they have a “wizard” application to push you through the sales process).

JavaScript / CSS: The client was blocking JS and CSS from the bots. As Google announced last year, this is not a good thing.

URL Structures: This client had been using a somewhat common method for URL generation, and one which has historically worked, just fine (arguably). That is, place all product pages directly off of the root of the domain (companyname.com/product-name). I’ve always held the belief that this does, in fact work but it shouldn’t. Search engines should be smarter than this. With recent changes in the mobile algorithm, I am now a strong supporter of URL structures which follow the structure of the website (and breadcrumbs which accompany this). We have now rewritten all URLs to a proper format, and added Category pages where there had been none, previously.

We have made so many changes (and things are still not where they ultimately need to be) that we can now take a step back and begin to consider the more Strategic approach that had been planned for, long ago. We can now consider things like content-gap analysis, Information Architecture enhancements, a redesign of the website, social media strategy, PR and usability/conversion rate optimization. All of those things are certainly important, but it all begins with the crawl.

Google Grants 40 Percent of Right to Be Forgotten Requests

Search and web company Google has revealed that it has received almost one million URL takedown requests and complied about 40 percent of the time in the year since it has been applying the European right to be forgotten.

The controversial right to be forgotten ruling has been accepted reluctantly by Google, and the firm has spent much of the past year questioning its obligations under the ruling.

A Google transparency announcement published on the anniversary of the European Court of Justice ruling revealed that the firm has complied with 253,617 requests concerning 920,258 URLs.

Google breaks down the numbers further, showing that the company received 'removal evaluations' for some 126,000 URLs in the UK adding up to around 32,000 requests. The requests were complied with approximately 30 percent of the time.

The firm revealed some details that shed light on individual requests. "A media professional requested that we remove four links to articles reporting on embarrassing content he posted to the internet. We did not remove the pages from search results," Google said.

An example when Google did comply concerned a quashed conviction. "An individual who was convicted of a serious crime in the last five years, but whose conviction was quashed on appeal, asked us to remove an article about the incident. We removed the page from search results for the individual's name," the firm said.

The transparency report includes a top 10 list of target sites, and Facebook came first with 6,772 links removed. Other sites in the top 10, which accounts for eight percent of all requests, include Google+, Google Groups, YouTube and Twitter.

The right to be forgotten had an immediate impact on Google and, while the firm has asked for assistance and guidance on how best to manage the obligation, it did not take long for the requests to start coming in.

Google revealed that tens of thousands of demands came its way within the first few weeks.

Much of the talk in Europe since that time has been about extending the remit of the right to be forgotten to .com domains, as the European Union wants the ruling to apply worldwide rather than just in Europe.

4 Tactics for Outstanding E-commerce SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) has become ever more complicated. And the complexity is much greater for e-commerce sites, with their multitudes of automatically generated pages, loads of images and intense competition for clicks.

Modern SEO requires at least 16 different tactics, according to specialists from SEO PowerSuite; we'll list them at the end of this article. For now, let's focus on four that are among the most beneficial and often overlooked by retailers of all sizes, with examples of sites that excel:

1. Mobile friendly

In April, Google began dinging websites if they were not mobile-friendly. That means less mobile traffic to e-commerce sites; and, with mobile traffic continuing to climb, no serious retailer can afford to provide a bad mobile experience. There are three strategies for delivery to mobile devices: responsive design, which is Google's preferred method; dynamic serving of pages; and dedicated mobile URLs.

Many e-commerce platforms offer responsive-design templates, and the Ultimate Mobile-Friendly Checklist provides a list of common mistakes. Then, use Google's free Mobile-Friendly Testing Tool to check each page and get a list of things to fix.

2. Canonical URLs

Especially on large e-commerce sites, there may be multiple ways someone could get to a particular product page, for example, via a holiday promotion or spotlight, onsite search for a brand or product name, or from one or more product categories. Each of these paths automatically generates a unique URL, and each URL will compete with the others, thereby lowering search rank for each of them.

Instead, specify a canonical URL, that is, tell search engines which is your preferred URL. The URL structure is

<link rel="canonical" href="http://domain.com/canonical.html">

Let's use a recent Macy's Mother's Day promotion for a coffee maker as an example. Here's the URL for the product page itself:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cuisinart-dgb-1-grind-brew-coffee-maker?ID=1741454&CategoryID=24732

It was also promoted in a Mother's Day sale:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cuisinart-dgb-1-grind-brew-coffee-maker?ID=1741454&CategoryID=7560#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D159%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D1

Meanwhile, shoppers could follow breadcrumbs: Home essentials – kitchen – coffee, tea and espresso, resulting in this URL:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cuisinart-dgb-1-grind-brew-coffee-maker?ID=1741454&CategoryID=24732#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D151%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D2

Or, they could use Macy's site search and arrive via this URL:

http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cuisinart-dgb-1-grind-brew-coffee-maker?ID=1741454&CategoryID=24732#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D1%26slotId%3D1%26kws%3Dcuisinart%20dgb-1%20grind%20&%20brew%20coffee%20maker

Of course, Macy's knows its stuff, so its programmers specified a canonical URL using the rel=canonical tag for each of these URLs:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/cuisinart-dgb-1-grind-brew-coffee-maker?ID=1741454&CategoryID=24732">

As a result, all SEO value is funneled to this single, canonical URL. Macy's gets extra value from this because the canonical URL contains both keywords and the product ID.

3. Enticing meta descriptions

It's surprising how many retailers don't pay attention to their meta-descriptions, instead allowing them to be auto-generated by the search engine. Once a company has gotten onto the first page of SERPs, the meta-description is often the first step in conversion, selling the searcher on one result.

With its completely automated page generation, Amazon delivers a clearly machine-made result. The online giant, of course, has such a strong brand that it doesn't need to woo shoppers. Almost everyone else does.

4. Fresh, robust content

Keyword-rich content – and a lot of it – has always been good for SEO. Thanks to Google's Hummingbird Update, that content also needs to be original and useful. A solid content strategy must go beyond blogs and reviews to include video, photos and social media.

With a network of retail stores and huge e-commerce presence, REI doesn't sell gear, it sells the outdoor lifestyle. In addition to the expected product reviews, its blog covers topics like getting a reluctant friend to go camping and ideas for dates in nature. And, while the top of the homepage features gear, it provides links to a wealth of other content, including expert advice, how-to videos, infographics and photo spreads.

All this content helps REI.com rank for long-tail searches while improving its overall ranking thanks to the quality of its content.

And 12 more

Here are the other 12 techniques that every retailer should use to achieve outstanding SEO for e-commerce:

*Optimized for local (even for big guys)

*Proper site structure

*Applying structured data

*Ensuring fast loading times

*Incorporating user-generated content to maintain freshness

*Applying detailed, keyword-rich product descriptions

*Using alt text for images

*Providing social sharing tools on product pages

*Applying HTTPs security protocol

*Error-free pages

*Diverse anchors

*Robust backlinks

Yes, this is a long list. Start with making sure your e-commerce site is mobile-friendly, for an immediate SEO boost, and then work your way down until you've achieved stellar search engine optimization. It's worth it.
