What Google's New Quality Assessment Update Means For SEO

At the beginning of May 2015, thousands of webmasters noticed significant ranking volatility—some rising, some falling, and some just noticing their competitors juggled around in a new order. As you can imagine, this fueled rampant speculation as to whether this was part of some new Google GOOGL -0.64% update, if it was a temporary experiment, or if it was just some hiccup in the search engine’s typical data processing.

Immediately, search marketers turned to the possibility of a Google Panda refresh. Since the last major update from Google was the “Mobilegeddon” update at the end of April, it seemed unlikely that this was the result of some major algorithm update. Plus, since Panda hadn’t seen a refresh in some time, search marketers assumed that it was long overdue. Google, however, immediately dispelled the rumors by announcing that the temporary search volatility was not Panda-related.

It took some time before Google officially confirmed the source of the update, but it finally did. After a few weeks of being unofficially named the “Phantom Update,” thanks to its lack of official acknowledgement, Google recognized that yes, there had been some fundamental changes released to the core algorithm.

The New Quality Assessment

Panda and Penguin, the two most noteworthy updates in Google’s history, were intended to improve results for users with one function in mind: weeding out spam that annoyed and complicated users’ searches. This new unnamed update, which I’ll call the “Quality Update” (in line with other search marketers) takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on penalizing or eliminating spam, it only introduced a handful of new quality assessment indicators that help Google understand how “good” or how authoritative a site is. Essentially, there are new factors that Google uses to determine how worthy a site is to rank.

What New Factors Are in Effect?

Google is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to the specifics of its ranking algorithm—in fact, it’s even holding firm against pressure from multiple European government forces. It certainly isn’t going to explain the inner workings of its system just because you asked nicely. Most of the factors we knew before the update are only known to us because of skilled trial-and-error-style experiments done by dozens of search marketers over the course of months.

Now, we aren’t even sure whether Google has added new ranking factors. It might have only rebalanced the factors that were already there, making some factors more important and some less important, or making minor tweaks to the process the algorithm uses to calculate those factors.

Google I/O 2015: Maps to bring offline search and navigation; Google Now gets smarter

Google I/O 2015 developer conference had some major announcements on the Google Maps app. Just like it has done with YouTube, you will soon be able to take the Maps’ search and turn-by-turn navigation feature offline. Google hasn’t given an exact date as to when this feature will begin working on Maps.

According to Google, even for Maps that you have taken offline, you will get the turn by turn voice navigation feature. This is particularly relevant in markets such as India where cellular connectivity may not always be speedy at all times while driving.

Offline maps navigation will certainly help out a lot of people on saving up on data charges when they are out and about. However, one also needs to keep in mind that taking a map along with all the navigational information offline will certainly take up significant space on your storage.

While Now is a smart personal assistant, Google has improved upon it as well. A feature called ‘Now on Tap’ will basically let Google Now be activated from any screen or app in a contextual manner. “With “Now on tap,” you can simply tap and hold the home button for assistance without having to leave what you’re doing—whether you’re in an app or on a website,” says the Google blog post.

For instance, if you are mailing a friend about movie listings, tap on the movie name and hold on to the home button. Google Now will just pull up the relevant Now cards to give you more information. This basically lets you do simple tasks without leaving your current app.

Similarly, if you are chatting with a friend about going out to eat at a restaurant, Now on Tap will bring up restaurant details and you can also take actions such as make a call to reserve a table or read reviews on supported apps or lookup the location on a map and so on.

“Google can show you apps from your phone that may help with what you’re doing based on your context—IMDb for movie reviews, OpenTable for reservations, and many more. This is another way developers can get their apps in front of their users at the right moment, when an app is relevant to the task at hand,” says the Google Inside search blog.

To make this possible Google is implementing a deeper level of machine learning which Google senior vice president Sundar Pichai stressed on during the Google I/O keynote.

This will also be a good answer to Cortana’s foray into the Android and iOS ecosystems as well as Apple’s upcoming smart assistant called Proactive on iOS 9. We will come to know how effective Now on Tap is once it launches in the market in the coming months.

Nintendo is bringing its its classic gaming competition back from the dead

Nintendo is trying to drum up hype before next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the world's biggest showcase for all the big consumer games coming out in the next year.

So, in the lead-up to that event, the Japanese gaming company is bringing back the "Nintendo World Championships," which hasn't been a thing in 25 years.

Nintendo announced the news in a goofy video, where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime plays a bunch of old Nintendo games to train for the two-week-long gaming tournament starting in late May.

If you have no idea what the Nintendo World Championships are, don't worry. I had never heard of them until watching Nintendo's video.

Each Nintendo GameCube weighs five pounds, five ounces. Step it up, Reggie!

Only Nintendo diehards remember the 1990 Nintendo World Championships, the first and only time Nintendo held a cross-country competition to find the best Nintendo gamers in the US.

(Ignore the fact it's called "World" Championships, not "US" Championships.)

Nintendo toured various US cities and had local players test their skills by playing certain portions of major Nintendo games like "Super Mario Bros." and "Tetris," which were all crammed into a specially-made gaming cartridge for these events. The winners of the local contests were flown out to Hollywood to compete against players their own age to win incredible prizes, including a 40-inch TV and a Geo Metro convertible! Wowza!

Let's hope Nintendo brings back the Geo Metro convertible as a possible prize in the 2015 World Championships.

Nintendo is pretty mum on details for this year's World Championship - all we know is that qualifying rounds will begin May 30 at Best Buys in major US cities, and the winners from those events, as well as a few invited competitors (probably the winners from the 1990 World Championship, and maybe some surprise guests), will compete at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on June 14 to be crowned "Nintendo World Champion."
That final championship event will be live streamed online.

Nintendo says it will offer more details about the Nintendo World Championships in the coming weeks, including which games will be played and the possible prizes.

The short-term goal of the event is to build hype for E3, which begins two days after the Nintendo World Championships end. On June 16, Nintendo will hold its "digital event," which will presumably include a ton of announcements about the Wii U and 3DS handheld. Nintendo did something a bit similar last year: It held a "Super Smash Bros." invitational tournament before E3 began, and decided to forgo a formal press event in favor of one of these "digital events."

Still, if popular, Nintendo might consider making its World Championships an annual event. Competitive gaming, also known as eSports, is becoming incredibly popular in the US, and this would be a great way for Nintendo to celebrate this particular demographic while showcasing some of its classic games. Personally, I can't wait to learn more about this tournament, and watch the June 14 tournament.

California bill aims to protect ride-sharing passengers' privacy

Legislation pending in California would protect the privacy of ride-sharing passengers, a concern that arose last year after an Uber executive revealed an internal tool used to track passenger journeys in real time.

Assembly Bill 886 aims to safeguard passengers' privacy by prohibiting ride-sharing companies from requesting or requiring that passengers provide personal information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, location and trip data, and credit card information. The bill would also require ride-sharing companies to destroy any personally identifiable information associated with accounts that are canceled.

Services such as Uber and Lyft, which pair passengers with drivers via a smartphone app, have grown rapidly in the past five years, stretching to cities around the world. Uber is currently in more than 260 cities in 54 countries, while rival Lyft operates in more than US 60 cities.

Growing with the services is the opportunity to gather a significant amount of personal information and data on each user. Data such as when and where passengers travel could provide new opportunities for passenger surveillance and unwanted marketing pitches, worries Assembly Member Ed Chau, the bill's sponsor.

"Limiting the data collected by ridesharing mobile applications does not reduce the functionality and availability to consumers that use and love them," Chau, a Democrat representing the Southern California city of Monterey Park, said in a statement. "On the contrary, this legislation is not about limiting the consumer, it is about giving the consumer ownership of their privacy, which can be the subject of abuse under certain circumstances."

Representatives for Uber and Lyft did not respond to request for comment.

The issue caught the attention of privacy advocates in November when a BuzzFeed reporter learned that an Uber executive had tracked her journey on the service without her knowledge. Josh Mohrer, Uber's New York general manager, was accused of tracking reporter Johana Bhuiyan by using a feature known as "God View" that is available to Uber employees and allows them to see logs of Uber customer activity.

Uber later said it had disciplined Mohrer, but not before the episode raised the attention of Sen. Al Franken, chair of the Subcommittee On Privacy, Technology, and the Law, who asked Uber CEO Travis Kalanick to address allegations he said "suggest a troubling disregard for customers' privacy." Uber responded by updating its data privacy policy, prohibiting "all employees at every level from accessing a rider or driver's data." The only exception described is for "a limited set of legitimate business purposes" such as monitoring accounts for fraudulent activity addressing issues raised by the Uber community.
