Deutsche Bank Reiterates Buy Rating On Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Stock

According to a research note published on Wednesday, Deutsche Bank has reiterated a Buy rating on Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock with a price target of $55. The sell-side research firm hosted a lunch meeting on Tuesday with approximately 20 investors to exchange insights on Microsoft.

Deutsche Bank noted that the stock has been trending down modestly after hitting a peak of $49 in late April. The firm believes that the downward trend is due to unusual strong move in the stock, following the March quarter results as well as recent weak PC market news. The investors mostly focus on cloud transition, the state of the PC market, and how the stock would react if Microsoft was to acquire Salesforce.com, Inc. (NYSE:CRM).

The bull case focuses on the cloud transition story, with Office 365 and Azure now providing 7% of the revenue mix and growing more than 100%. The operating expense story and the stability of Microsoft’s Server product revenue were mentioned far less in the bull scenario. The bulls also argued that the pending Windows accounting change and associated GAAP earnings per share (EPS) cuts are in the stock already, as are weak PC market trends.

The bearish side of the investors focuses on near-term and secular PC growth concerns with consensus view mixed at best, without any Win 10 lift in the second-half of 2015. The bears also discuss skepticism about the cloud transition, mostly saying that is it a drag on margins or will it cannibalize on-premise workloads. The bears also question about Office 365 growth being offset by the decline in traditional license Office.

Deutsche Bank analyst, Karl Keirstead stated, “We conclude that the weak PC market is largely in the stock (the PC-centric Windows OEM business is now just 12% of MSFT’s rev mix), the cloud transition story is additive and will lift sentiment for some time.” He further added that Microsoft’s valuation multiple will appear more reasonable to the skeptics as EPS growth recovers in fiscal-year 2016 (FY16).

According to Bloomberg, 23 analysts rate Microsoft stock a Buy, 14 recommend it a Hold, and only seven tag a Sell. The consensus 12-month price target on the stock is $49.9 showing an upside potential of 9.6% on the current trading price.

The stock is currently trading down 0.87% at $45.43 as of 1:06 PM EDT. Since the start of the year, the stock experienced a decline of 3.42% with an average daily trading volume of 29.27 million shares.

Google Drops The Thumbtack Link Penalty Less Than A Week After It Was Issued

Google Capital backed Thumbtack's link penalty only lasted a week and now they are ranking just as well in Google. SEOs are calling this unfair.

Google’s manual action for Thumbtack’s unnatural links only lasted about a week and now they are back, ranking as well as ever.

Last week, Thumbtack’s co-founder confirmed with Search Engine Land they had a manual action issued by Google over unnatural links pointing to their site.

But less than a week later, the Google Capital funded company, has seen themselves back in Google’s good graces and ranking just as well prior to the penalty.

As we covered before, what seems to have led the company into a manual action was their outreach encouraging businesses owners to add rich anchor text links to their category pages, in exchange, Thumbtack would give them progress points towards completing their online profile.

After a couple days, Thumbtack emailed their businesses asking them to either remove the link or add a nofollow attribute to the link. Then a couple days after that, Google seems to have reversed the penalty.

We emailed the co-founder of Thumbtack for confirmation, but he has yet to reply to our emails. However, @kikolani did receive an email from the company saying all is back to normal and the penalty has been reversed. The email said they “resolved the issue related to Google traffic,” and said their “request volume is back” to normal, which means their traffic seems to be back to normal.

Razvan Gavrilas from cognitiveSEO shared tons of data showing how their traffic from Google is back to normal. All the analytics tools show the huge drop in rankings and then the massive rebound a week later.

Google obviously won’t comment on manual actions but clearly the email documented above acts as the confirmation and the traffic trends show the recover.

Was It Fair?
The SEO and webmaster community is asking, was it fair? Most manual actions takes months to recover and rebound from. But in this case, it took less than a week?

Plus did Thumbtack have to do as much as any other non Google Capital backed company to recover from a manual action?

It seems, although we don’t have proof, that all Thumbtack did was ask businesses nicely to remove or nofollow the links. They didn’t seem to disavow any links or take any additional measures to remove the bad links? If they did, you’d think all those old links wouldn’t count anymore and their rankings wouldn’t simply bounce back.

But in this case, their rankings bounced back, which may imply those links are still counting.

Do you think it is possible that since the company is financed by the Google Capital arm, they had been influenced to act faster internally in the Google manual action team? Or maybe it was just all the publicity around this penalty?

We know Google has penalized their own properties over the past years for much longer than just a week.

Many well known and respected SEOs are finding all of this “shocking” and unnatural itself.

Postscript: I just got off the phone with Marco Zappacosta, Co-founder & CEO of Thumbtack, who told me that the manual action was indeed revoked late last week.

What Google's New Quality Assessment Update Means For SEO

At the beginning of May 2015, thousands of webmasters noticed significant ranking volatility—some rising, some falling, and some just noticing their competitors juggled around in a new order. As you can imagine, this fueled rampant speculation as to whether this was part of some new Google GOOGL -0.64% update, if it was a temporary experiment, or if it was just some hiccup in the search engine’s typical data processing.

Immediately, search marketers turned to the possibility of a Google Panda refresh. Since the last major update from Google was the “Mobilegeddon” update at the end of April, it seemed unlikely that this was the result of some major algorithm update. Plus, since Panda hadn’t seen a refresh in some time, search marketers assumed that it was long overdue. Google, however, immediately dispelled the rumors by announcing that the temporary search volatility was not Panda-related.

It took some time before Google officially confirmed the source of the update, but it finally did. After a few weeks of being unofficially named the “Phantom Update,” thanks to its lack of official acknowledgement, Google recognized that yes, there had been some fundamental changes released to the core algorithm.

The New Quality Assessment

Panda and Penguin, the two most noteworthy updates in Google’s history, were intended to improve results for users with one function in mind: weeding out spam that annoyed and complicated users’ searches. This new unnamed update, which I’ll call the “Quality Update” (in line with other search marketers) takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on penalizing or eliminating spam, it only introduced a handful of new quality assessment indicators that help Google understand how “good” or how authoritative a site is. Essentially, there are new factors that Google uses to determine how worthy a site is to rank.

What New Factors Are in Effect?

Google is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to the specifics of its ranking algorithm—in fact, it’s even holding firm against pressure from multiple European government forces. It certainly isn’t going to explain the inner workings of its system just because you asked nicely. Most of the factors we knew before the update are only known to us because of skilled trial-and-error-style experiments done by dozens of search marketers over the course of months.

Now, we aren’t even sure whether Google has added new ranking factors. It might have only rebalanced the factors that were already there, making some factors more important and some less important, or making minor tweaks to the process the algorithm uses to calculate those factors.

Hyundai to Take Voice Search to the Open Road

Accessing Google Maps and navigating Google Now's voice search while driving just got a lot easier for Android users with 2015 Hyundai Sonatas.

Hyundai is offering a free software upgrade to owners of 2015 Hyundai Sonatas with navigation that will use Google Now geo-location-targeted voice search based on Google Maps users' past searches, calendar entries, and home and office locations to offer location suggestions. The upgrade will integrate Google voice search with the Sonata's touch screen navigation system. The new software will also integrate other Google Apps, such as Google Play, along with third party apps, like Skype, Spotify, and NPR.

While Google announced plans to work with several automakers to integrate Google apps into vehicles earlier this year, Hyundai is the first to integrate the technology into its cars. A spokesperson from Hyundai tells Search Engine Watch that the company chose to pilot this program with Google instead of a competing search engine or operating system because of Google's "speed and accuracy."

However, Hyundai has not shelved plans to work with Apple to offer app and search integration to iPhone users, the spokesperson tells Search Engine Watch, and will soon offer CarPlay, a similar product from Apple, in its vehicles. "Hyundai and Apple are committed to delivering drivers the best possible experience while using CarPlay in their vehicles. We are currently working together to complete CarPlay integration, and look forward to making it available in the Hyundai Sonata soon."

Android Auto is currently only available to Android users with the Lollipop 5.0 operating system and must be obtained through Hyundai dealers. However, this summer, Sonata owners can download the update through the Hyundai website to a USB drive.

Can You Reavow Links You Have Previously Disavowed?

Google's disavow tool is a mysterious thing. If you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with how it is used. To disavow links, we create a text file that contains either the URLs of the links you want to disavow or the entire domain of each link, upload the file to Google's disavow tool and trust that next time Google visits this link, they will apply an invisible no-follow tag so the link is no longer used in calculations made by the Pengiun algorithm.

But what happens if you decide that you have made an error and want to make changes to your disavow file? Can you reavow a link? The answer is yes. In this article we will discuss how to reavow a link and why you may want to do so.

How to Reavow a Link

Reavowing a link is as simple as removing the link from your disavow file and then resubmitting the file. For example, let's say that my disavow file looked like this:

#Unnatural links that we want to disavow
domain:ultra-spammy-directory.com
domain:spammy-directory.com
domain:good-directory.com
domain:another-spammy-directory.com

Now, let's say that we are re-evaluating our disavow file and we realize that we have accidentally disavowed a good directory link that is probably a valid citation. To ask Google to reavow this link, we would create and submit a new file that looks like this:

#Unnatural links that we want to disavow
domain:ultra-spammy-directory.com
domain:spammy-directory.com
domain:another-spammy-directory.com

When Will the Link Be Reavowed? And Does It Really Count?

When Google first told us that we could reavow links, it was widely believed that the link would start to count again the next time that Google crawled the domain that you had removed from your disavow. However, Matt Cutts has stated that Google has built a lag into the reavow feature of the tool. In a video, Cutts explained that reavowing a link can "take a lot longer," though no one knows how long that is. Google wants to be really certain that spammers are not going to try to figure out which links are helping or hurting them by doing disavow and reavow experiments.

When you are disavowing links, you can know that a link in your disavow file is considered disavowed once you see that Google has cached the page where the link resides. But when it comes to reavowing, we have no way of knowing when Google is going to start counting that link again or whether it will be given the same weight.

Most people believe that when a link is removed from a disavow file that at some point, Google will eventually start to count the link again as a normal link. But Matt says that the link may not be given the same weight it once had. Again, this is likely a measure to stop people from gaming the system.

Cyrus Shepard's Experiment

Most people who discuss reavowing links will bring up an excellent and gutsy experiment performed by Cyrus Shepard, who disavowed every single link to his website. When he did so, nothing happened. Then, when Penguin hit, he suffered dramatic drops in rankings. He reavowed all of his links by removing his disavow file, and now, two years after starting his experiment, traffic has not recovered at all. I asked Cyrus recently whether he had seen any improvement yet, and he sent me this image showing that things were still quite abysmal:

However, Cyrus himself admits that there are possibly some problems with his experiment. His site was the victim of a pharma-hacking attack, and it's hard to say whether this played a part in his ranking troubles. As with any SEO test there are other variables in play. As such, we can't take Cyrus' experiment and make bold statements proclaiming that a disavowed link can never be reavowed. Still, this experiment is a good warning not to play around with the disavow tool extensively.

I have been thinking more about when Matt Cutts says that a reavowed link may not be given the same weight as it had previously. I am wondering if perhaps Google has an algorithm in play that says that they will not count reavowed links if it looks like someone is reavowing to try to massively manipulate Google. In other words, perhaps in Cyrus' case the algorithm can detect that something fishy is going on because he un-disavowed 35,000 links all at once.

Perhaps if he only removed a couple of links from his disavow file, Google would be more willing to count those links again. Who knows...perhaps Google says that the more links you reavow the longer it will take for them to count again. If this is true, perhaps one day Cyrus will see his links start to count again and traffic increase dramatically. But this is just a theory. The point is that you should not be reavowing links without putting great thought into the process. And better yet, you should try not to disavow links that you might eventually want to reavow.

Examples of Links You Might Want to Reavow

Have I scared you off of reavowing links? If your goal is to disavow like crazy to get out of a penalty and then reavow the majority of those links, then hopefully I have dissuaded you from doing this.

I have seen several situations where a link was disavowed by mistake. If you relied solely on an automated link auditing tool to make your disavow file, then there is a good possibility that you have disavowed some links that are not unnatural. An unnatural link is one that you, or an SEO company acting on your behalf, made in order to manipulate Google. I've seen automated tools recommend disavowing fantastic links from high authority sites. If you've done this, then removing those links from your disavow file is a good idea.

Another example of a mistake that I have seen is a site that disavows itself. Don't laugh; I've almost done it myself. Fortunately I caught my mistake during a final check before disavowing. Alan Bleiweiss asked a Google employee whether this could cause problems. Apparently Google can determine whether you've disavowed yourself and can ignore this disavow directive. Still, if I noticed this mistake in a disavow file this is a link I'd be removing from the file!

I've also seen links that were disavowed by a well meaning SEO who was doing a manual review and assumed incorrectly that the link was unnatural. Sometimes it's hard to tell whether a link is a good one or not. If you see some links in your disavow file that you really do feel are natural, then go ahead and remove them and hopefully Google will start to count them again. I have to give a word of caution here though: I have found that it is very hard to be objective when making reavow decisions. I have seen webmasters who have done what I call "panic reavowing" where they reavow a bunch of borderline links because they have not seen an increase in rankings. This is probably not a good idea.

Another common area where links often need to be reavowed is when it comes to valid directory links. When I first started removing penalties I was probably a little bit overzealous when it came to directory links. I think that some of those links that I disavowed are ones that I wouldn't disavow if I was doing the same audit today.

Keywords on Mobile: Not Comparable to Desktop

Last week Google confirmed that smartphone searches now exceed desktop searches in 10 countries. WOW. That was fast. Despite this fact, many brand marketers still haven't figured out what to do with mobile.

The direct conversations that brands have grown accustomed to via desktop just aren't there, so new solutions are being created. While that struggle continues, I find one of the best ways to overcome the mobile challenge is to understand consumer behavior on various devices. We all know that in order to be the best marketers, we have to do what is best for our customers - this includes delivering valuable experiences.

One way to understand consumers in search is to study how their behavior impacts keyword queries. Are they searching the same way across devices? I looked at the type of queries consumers were using in a previous article. It showed a lot of growth in question based queries on mobile and tablets, which suggests voice search has started to alter the way people search for information. This time, I took a look at the number of keywords that are in a search. The goal is to understand how they impact the results brands see for various metrics.

I pulled data across multiple clients and indexed the actual numbers to not provide specific metric ranges. This data can be pulled from a search terms report in Adwords - run this formula (=LEN(Q2)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(Q2," ",""))+1) - on the keyword column to get the number of words in a query.

I first wanted to understand click-through rates (CTR). How descriptive are consumers when they search and how often do they click the results? What I found was mobile CTR was highest for shorter keywords. Once the search term got beyond three words, the CTR was well below the index and only went down as the number of words in the query went up. Desktop had a fairly similar path, but the drop off was not nearly as significant, suggesting that longer queries, when you have a keyboard, lead to similarly valuable results.

Next, I wanted to check out how keywords converted. This showed a similar pattern that you might expect. When consumers included more keywords in their query the conversion rate went up. This suggests that as the specificity goes up, consumers have deeper intent to buy. The big variance in conversion rate was seen with mobile and single keyword searches. In this data set there are a fair amount of products that are pretty simple: if you want to buy shoes from Nike you can search for "shoes" and get to what you wanted on mobile. The goal is to keep things as simple as possible on mobile, more so than on desktop, where something a little more complex is easier to complete.

Finally, I took a look at cost per click (CPC) by keyword count. I think this one shows more about how advertisers optimize for keywords vs. the consumer perspective, but they obviously align. For example, mobile CPCs greatly increased as the keyword length went up, which aligns to the conversion rate data seen in the previous chart. The better the conversion rate, the higher the CPC bid can be set.

I find this type of data fascinating. Every so often you have to be able to take a step back and look around the landscape. Is what you were doing in the past still working? Have consumers shifted, given market or technology shifts, so that your plan at the beginning of the year did not account for now? Mobile is the biggest mover that we've seen in our industry in a long time, and the trend isn't slowing down. I encourage you to start thinking "mobile first", like many of your consumers already are.

Concatenate: The Ultimate Excel Function for Managing PPC Campaigns

There are lots of Excel functions out there that can make managing and reporting on PPC campaigns easier. My favorite is Concatenate. Simply mastering this function can make so many laborious tasks quicker, which ultimately means there is more time for the juicier optimization opportunities.

First quick tip: you don't need to write =CONCATENATE to string test sequences together. You can simply use an "&" to piece together your text.

Creating the Best-Structured Campaign and Ad Group Names

When running large accounts that have lots of campaigns and ad groups, you can easily get swamped with naming conventions. Having a clear naming convention across your account is paramount to running an account properly. It simply helps with reporting and optimizing, along with more detail in the anti-concatenate section.

In the example below we have specified country, gender, brand and product type in the ad group name. If we were looking at multiple countries, multiple brands and more than six product types, you can see how the volume of ad groups might soon snow ball.

Bulk Changing Ad Copy

Changing ad copy across an account can be a pretty huge job. We can use the table we used to help build our ad groups name to bulk create ad copy across an account. I have created three sets of ads for a summer sale.

We can use concatenate to pull in the brand and category (using the ad group naming table from point one). We can then pull the formulas down against all the ad groups and all-new ads will be created.

Use the =LEN function to count the characters in your ads so you can tweak any that go over character limit. You can then upload this table through AdWords editor.

Building URL Tags

I'm going to specifically look at UTM tags here. Google Analytics gives us some great attribution tools. AdWords and Bing traffic is auto tagged, so it's not such a big issue, but when looking at how search is tying into all other digital activity, it is important to ensure you have a clear naming convention. The use of concatenate and shared doc will help ensure all channels are following the right tag structure.

Anti-Concatenate

I have run through how using concatenate for constructing things is great, but it is also useful to know how to deconstruct them from a reporting point of view.
I have two main ways to do this:

Using the ‘Text to Columns' function in the data tab, choose ‘Delimited' then you can select a symbol to do this. This is where the | symbol in the ad group naming comes in handy, as it will split the columns up. This function is also really handy for splitting destination URLs up from query strings.

You can also use the Right and Left functions to pull info from a column. In the example below, the location of the campaigns is based on the 3 characters prefixed to the campaign name. Using the Left function allows you to pull this info into its own location column making it easy to report by territory.

Creating these columns allows us turn very granular ad group level data into something a lot more functional. We can quickly create amalgamated charts to help review overall performance for each segment.

Although it's a simple function, concatenate proves powerful for making account management more efficient. It can assist with so many aspects, from building and bulk changes to optimisation and reporting. Have another useful way to use concatenate? I would love to hear it in the comments!

The Rise of Content Performance: The Search and Social Link

While many marketers write about the rapid rise of content marketing and the importance of ‘xyz' ways to produce killer content, many fail to truly understand what content marketing really means ‘beyond the blog post', ‘beyond the view' and ‘beyond the like'.

According to data from the Content Marketing Institute, 86% of organizations use content marketing, but only 21% say they are successful at tracking the ROI of its content. Digital and content marketers are at a crossroads - in order to justify content budgets, they have to get better at measuring performance.

Content Marketing Objectives

At the heart of publishing content for performance lie objectives. Not one objective, but multiple objectives.

For example:

Your audience objective: If you don't know and understand your audience, then your content performance metrics will fall flat. It's vital to understand and optimize your content in a format that helps audiences read, understand, engage and take action. Content has to serve a purpose for them. This is where persona based targeting is essential.

Your personal objective: What do you want to get from the content? Is it personal promotion? Is it sharing a specific message? Or is it influencing a certain niche section/audience? Is your personal objective actually your business objective?

Your business objective: What value does this add to your business? Is it aligned with key performance indicators (KPIs)? Do you simply want traffic and shares, or is the aim to influence a brand or prospect and tie in with a wider sales, CS, or business plan?

Not everything you do around content can be numbers driven. However, everything you do around content, search and social should be built to measure or, at least, show how it attributes to content marketing success.

Search & Social - Silos and Vanity

Search, social and content marketing are interlinked, so it is important to measure different things as part of a bigger picture. In the past, marketers have tried to measure and amplify their success based on outdated metrics that didn't offer measurable impact to a business.

Measurable impact is derived from taking a holistic approach to how search, social and content strategies attribute to common business objectives such as sales, conversions or revenue.

The rise of vanity metrics often distracts content authors from the true meaning and value of publishing great content. This is subjective vanity versus objective performance. Page view and ‘like based' journalism is partly to blame for the rise in vanity and comfort based metrics, and this is the new content/social link bait in poor disguise.

If you want to drive content performance, then looking at rankings, page views, shares and likes alone are exceptionally weak metrics.

5 Simple Steps That Lead To Better Content Performance

Establish a shared goal. Rather than look at channel specific goals, set a clear, cross-channel goal (conversion, sale, brand lift) or a strategic objective (brand, recruitment, customer service).
Build and work as a ‘search, content and social super-group' (SCS) towards a common goal or objective. Set a mutually agreed strategy and document your plan.

Bake search and social strategies into to your content strategy. Identify audiences and platforms where your customers are most likely to take action from your content.
Execute, test and refine. Share content across social networks. Analyze SERP positions and test video, image and text variations. Share content around topics of interest. Search, social and content, as I mentioned before, can help inform and amplify each other's strategies. Continually evolve and adapt your group tactics.

Analyze, attribute and measure performance. Track and measure key metrics and KPIs that align with your goals and objectives. Place tracking codes on every piece of content available to help you understand how search, social and content channels interact and identify how, when and why they perform.

Ensure that your campaigns are synced with your CRM system so you can see the impact of your content strategy in relation to final business outcomes. Take the complex and try to make it simple - it's a lot harder than you think.

Hundreds of New Top-Level Domains Now Up for the Taking

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has expanded access to top-level domains, meaning domain extensions like .photography, .expert and .pizza are now available for the taking.

This creates an opportunity for brands who wish to create a more identifiable online presence, but have not yet been able to secure an ideal domain name.

The traditional .com domain space is super saturated, leaving little opportunity for new businesses to get the domain name of their choice without paying exorbitant fees.

According to Verisign, which manages .com websites, 115.6 million of the 288 million domains registered across the globe end in .com.

To get around the issue of over-saturation, many business have resorted to using extensions like .ly, .me, and .tv. Unbeknownst to many, those were actually established as country codes — representing Libya, Montenegro, and Tuvalu respectively.

In total, over 600 new top-level domains have been purchased, with about 350 of those available to register now. Roughly 5.6 million addresses featuring these new domain extensions are already live, with .xyz, .science and .club being the most popular so far.

The new domain extensions are said to be selling for around $40 a year on average, which works out to be more than double the price of a typical .com address. That is, if you can even find a suitable .com address. An asking price of $40 looks like a bargain compared to what some squatters are asking for hard-to-get .com domains.

Many are predicting this will put an end to limited availability of domain names, while ringing in the “Not Com” revolution. Although these domain names look unusual now it’s possible that, over time, we’ll start seeing them more frequently than .com extensions.

Which Copy is Best For Your Home Page?

To convert, a home page needs to give its audience information. The more information they accept, the more likely they are to consider signing up, subscribing, or downloading. But if it’s not engaging and perfectly targeted, they’ll give up and fail to read anything.

Is shorter copy better? Concise copy is a must, but that doesn’t mean it should be short. In fact, the opposite is often true.

Here’s the case for long copy on a home page, and how to figure out the length that works best for you.

Google Likes Long Copy

In 2012, the top ten Google page results for any keyword had over 2,000 words of content each. Algorithm tweaks since have only confirmed that in-depth content is ranked higher.

Google’s famed algorithm is designed to offer the search results that users want. In its efforts to improve, priority has shifted from mere strings of keywords to actual human desires and needs. And humans need more information. Semantic relevance is the new king.

Plenty of sites have responded with content-heavy home pages, appealing to the audience and the Google algorithm alike. When the site Crazy Egg increased its home page copy by twenty times, their conversion rates jumped 30%. They were able to address audience concerns and establish their site as an authority through interesting and lengthy content, which won Google over.

Your Audience Likes Long Copy

A 2005 study swapped out the headlines of PowerPoint slides in a college course, offering short phrases to a control group, while giving “succinct sentence headlines” to others. Their thesis: that complete sentences would be more effective, sticking in students’ brains longer. At the end of the semester, they were proven correct. Students who had seen PowerPoints with complete sentences as headlines scored 10% higher on average than those who hadn’t.

A home page is like the headline of a website. You can’t be sure that a reader will do anything more than browse through the their landing page before clicking away. Because of this danger, keeping home page copy as short as possible seems like a natural decision.

But like PowerPoints, a home page needs to teach its reader something. Data proves that longer content drives backlinks. Just as longer headlines hook an audience better than short ones, longer home pages are often best.

In fact, in a report by John Doherty on the type of content that earns links, these two graphs illustrate the relation of long copy to linking root domains.

Here are the number of links visualized in the same order; showing the correlation between content and unique linking root domains.

Short Copy Still has a Place

That doesn’t mean you should entirely reject the option for shorter content. Less copy works well when audiences don’t need to be convinced to sign up. Take the Tinder or Groupon websites, for instance. In both cases, the product is free, and most people already know what it will accomplish for them.

Think about what you offer. Is it well-known or free? If so, short copy might be a quick, seamless way to present your home page offer. But many businesses are built to solve a specific, complex problem, and they hope to earn something for their efforts. Chances are strong that this approach won’t work for you.

Now that you know your perfect home page copy length, here are the five steps to create it.

Pick a Home Page Goal

To decide on the best home page copy length, you’ll first need to know your goal. Do you need email addresses? Paying subscribers? App downloads? eCommerce sales? Your home page should be focused on converting. Once you have your goal, it will inform the content and direction of the copy you’ll need in order to convert.

Find Out the Customers’ Motivation

Customer motivation informs home page copy’s persuasion. You need to be convincing enough to push a reader from interest to commitment. That all starts with the customer. You know your goal, and you need to know your customers’ goals as well.

While your goal should remain behind the scenes, customer motivation should be a visible guide for the copy on a home page. The readers don’t care about what you want, but they certainly care about what they want.

Address Problem Points

The potential customer for any product will have concerns, criticisms, and even fears about the inner workings of what they’re about to buy. You need to study these problem points, learn how to alleviate them, and deliver the answers in clean copy on your website.

You might not know it, but you see preempted problems all the time. Think of the last time you saw a comforting disclaimer like “your personal information will remain private” or an “emails are never used for advertising”. When you answer objections smoothly, readers won’t even realize why they feel at ease.

In order to address problem areas, your home page copy should run long, but always be to the point. Your readers want your product to help them. You just need to explain how it will.

Know Your Customer Awareness

To reach your goal, the home page has to be an authority on your product. But more importantly, it needs to be an authority on how much the reader already knows about the product. No one wants to read something they don’t understand, but they’ll also hate something they already know.

There are a series of established guidelines through which you can measure demographics’ awareness. As Copyblogger’s Brian Clarke summarizes it, the terms are: Completely Unaware, referring to those who don’t even know they have a problem; Problem-Aware, referring to those who have a problem, but don’t realize what the answer could be; Solution-Aware, referring to those who want a specific answer, but don’t know you have it; Product-Aware, referring to those who know what is being sold, but don’t know if they need it; Most Aware, referring to those who know what your product accomplishes and only need to hear the details of their commitment.

If you can narrow your prospective customer’s awareness to one of these, you’ll know the exact information necessary to take them from their current state to knowing they need to have your product.

Incorporate Customer Feedback

Startup consultant Sujan Patel increased his site conversions by over 30% after spending just two weeks as a customer support agent. He asked authentic questions regarding what they needed and disliked about the service, remained open to their honest criticism, and then targeted their problems with Facebook ads addressing each one. In other words, he let his customers write his copy.

When you listen to your users’ comments and criticism, you find out their motivations and awareness, and that’s crucial data. You should always work to improve your home page copy.

Properly built, a home page will boost brand awareness, customer acquisition, and overall growth of a website. Does yours?

Keeping each of the above components in mind will result in streamlined copy targeted at your readers’ needs and concerns. Write long, but stay interesting, actionable, and concise, and both your customers and Google’s algorithm will love you.

Google to Add ‘Buy’ Button to Search Results Within Next Few Weeks

Within the next few weeks Google will be rolling out a “buy” button that will allow people to purchase certain items directly from its search results pages.

A report in the Wall Street Journal indicates that Google’s buy button will initially be available only in mobile search, and will appear alongside paid search ads — not organic search listings.

WSJ’s anonymous sources have explained how the buy button will work. When you click on the buy button you’ll be directed to a special Google page to fill out the usual purchase. Then you submit your payment information directly to Google, where the order will be passed on to the retailer to be fulfilled.

This marks yet another example of Google aiming to be your one-stop solution from everything to finding web pages, to purchasing products, to ordering takeout. Just last week Google introduced a way for US customers to make delivery orders from local restaurants.

As Google expands into the online retail space it’s sure to pose a threat to current industry leaders like Amazon and eBay. Even smaller retailers aren’t thrilled with this move. Some are privately expressing concern that they will lose their brand identity as more customers place orders on a Google page rather than the retailer’s website.

Through this program, retailers will still have the opportunity to invite customers to opt-in to their marketing campaigns, as well as collect customer information. Google will save all customer payment information before passing the sale on to the retailer.

Instead of taking a portion of the retailer’s sales price, like Amazon and eBay, Google will continue to be paid by retailers through its existing advertising model.

Google has not officially commented on its buy button, so an official launch date has yet to be confirmed.

Should You Customize Your SEO Strategy for Specific Niches?

Don’t let anyone fool you. SEO is not rocket science. There is a general formula with four major components to SEO that all SEOs follow if they want to be successful with their campaign: content, links, on-page optimization, and social media.

The big component that the success of your campaign hinges on is depth.

The appropriate depth of your efforts depends on the niche and by what your competition is doing. Developing an appropriate strategy requires thinking, analysis, and time.

As if that is not enough, you need to consider the different goals of SEO. Rand Fishkin on Moz covers these in much depth here: The 6 Goals of SEO – Choosing the Right Ones for Your Business, so I will only provide a tiny synopsis of the different goals: SEO for raw traffic, SEO for E-Commerce Sales, SEO for Mindshare and Branding, SEO for lead acquisition and direct marketing, SEO for reputation management, and SEO for ideological influence.

You must choose your tactics for SEO based on the goals you have set for your business, as well as the different depth in strategy required by your niche.

In order to beat your niche’s competition, you must first execute proper research for your niche, beginning with the general components of SEO: Market research, competitor research, keyword research, content, links, on-page optimization, and social media.

Market Research & Competitor Research
Who is your competition? How deep is the industry you are targeting?

You should never start an SEO campaign blind. But, you shouldn’t copy your competition exactly, either. Performing market research into your competitors will help reveal exactly how much of their content is gaining traction and social shares, how much of their strategy is being devoted to link acquisition, how much they are focusing on content, what keyword phrases they are targeting, and many tactics that will help aid you in dethroning the number one spot.

I must stress: avoid copying your competition’s strategy exactly. Unless you are a super advanced SEO, you don’t know how Google is going to react to a specific link or piece of content. The problem with copying a competitor’s strategy compounds itself in the form of SEO penalties.

By using the various SEO factors as indicators, rather than your overall exact strategy, you can still beat your competition by using white hat techniques that conform to Google’s guidelines. This will help you go after your niche effectively, and beat your competition. This can all be done without the worry of eventually falling under a Panda or Penguin penalty.

By the way, I know algorithmic changes make what some thought were good SEO strategies seem worthless. The thing is, what some people feel are good SEO strategies may actually fall into the area of gray hat or borderline black hat SEO.

Such myths have been perpetuated throughout the industry for so long that some believe they are solid strategies, when in fact, doing research into Google’s quality guidelines reveals they were never a solid white hat strategies. One example is that of link wheels, which falls directly under Google’s “link scheme” violation. When done too aggressively, you can be hit by Penguin. A usual good rule of thumb – if you doubt any particular link adds value and it’s only being done for SEO, don’t acquire it.

Keyword Research
What keywords is my competition using to drive traffic?

Finding the right keywords is the most important step of your SEO campaign. Keywords are the backbone of SEO and will drive your strategy – you should be researching your competition and how they are using keyword phrases. Not only should you be researching their on-page optimization and how they use these keywords, you should also be researching keyword phrases for search volume and how much traffic they will potentially drive to your site. Once you have built up the list of keywords, you can then begin setting up your editorial calendar and coming up with topics for your website.

Content Research
How much content are my competitors writing?

It’s not about creating content with the most amount of words, or content with the most amount of great ideas. It’s about creating interesting content that people care about, that they will want to share with their friends, and their friends will want to share with their friends.

People will NOT share boring content. This is called social amplification, and can greatly enhance the traction of any piece of content you write. (I will discuss the social component of content later in this article.) But, the fact remains, you should examine, as a general indicator, how much content your competition is creating, along with the kind of content they are creating that is successful.

How many words are they writing per article?

What is the general word count of the top competitors in that niche?

How many articles are they posting per week?

How many articles are they posting per month?

How are they using keywords in that content?

By analyzing your top 5-10 competitors and creating a spreadsheet with this information, you are now armed with appropriate information to take on the competition in that industry.

Link Research

Which competitors are under a penalty? Do they have bad link profiles?

Links are no longer the be-all, end-all SEO success metric they used to be, but they remain an important part of an SEO campaign. Which is why it is important to deduce the link profile of your competitors. Using tools like Cemper’s Link Detox, Google Webmaster Tools, AHREFs, and Majestic SEO, you can examine the strength of your competitor’s link profile. By doing this for the top 10 websites on Google, you can get a good idea of what links are driving value to these top 10 sites that Google is rewarding.

It is important to consider the penalty end of things: Do NOT use your competition’s link profile as an actual strategy. You can, however, use their link profile and go after sites that are of high value and high quality, and that conform to Google’s quality guidelines. By focusing on the quality sites in that niche, you can dethrone the higher ranking competitors by building your linking strategy around those sites Google considers valuable.

Remember, even link acquisition strategies will vary between niches. A niche with an expansive market in industrious cities like Los Angeles will require a much larger marketing budget in order to see effective ROI from these link acquisition efforts. A niche with a smaller market in Garden Grove, California and surrounding cities, with a lower competition level among keyword phrases, will require less link building in order to be successful.

This is why researching different niches and varying your SEO strategy between said niches is so important. Not only does this impact your link acquisition, it also impacts your keyword research! Every niche has its own jargon, and this impacts how people search tremendously. By performing your due diligence on this research, you can build an effective SEO campaign that delivers on the all-important return on investment that your client is expecting.

On-Page SEO
How is my competition using keywords on-site?

This is another biggie that can vary between niches, and can vary between keyword phrases widely based on how people are searching. One niche can require the use of highly technical keyword phrases in its copy, along with the use of synonyms and antonyms. Another niche can use extremely simple language that lends itself to the bare minimum of on-page optimization.

The important lesson in this part of your research is to learn the following on the top 10 sites on Google:

What is your competition doing with those keyword phrases on-page?

How are they being used in the title tag?

How are they being used in the Meta description?

How are they being used in the Meta keywords (no, Google does not use meta keywords for ranking, but they DO use meta keywords in the pre-indexation caching part of the ranking process)?

How are those keywords being used in the content?

What frequency of keyword phrases is being used? (Note: I am talking about frequency of keyword phrases for relevance, NOT keyword density. An important caveat here is if you follow your competition’s strategy for keyword phrases you also run the risk of a Panda penalty if their keyword use looks spammy.

Are their keywords being used on-page in a spammy way? Then create higher quality content that utilizes that similar keyword strategy.)
Even keyword strategy and on-page use can vary in frequency and scope depending on your niche, so it is important to spend time researching how your competition is using their keyword phrases on-site.

Social Media Research

How can I amplify the social reach of my content?

Social Media ResearchMuch misinformation and speculation has been perpetuated in recent years about social media, and its impact on rankings. So much so, that Matt Cutts finally – a year ago – had to put the kibosh on this with his video where he stated that there are no signals like that in Google’s search ranking algorithm:

Matt Cutts: Facebook, Twitter Social Signals Not Part of Google Search Ranking Algorithms

So where is the value of social? The value of social is through establishing trust and authority with Google by getting your content out to actual readers, which in turn impacts their knowledge graph in relation to your website and other content.

By using research as a thin indicator of what the competition is doing with social media, you can examine what is being successful in your industry:

Who re-shares content the most? This indicator can be used to establish who your new niche’s most influential people are on the network, and from there, you can gain insight into their followers and get them to share your content.

What kind of content is being shared the most?

What kind of content has the most actionable impact in general (likes, shares) across the big 4 social

networks: Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and LinkedIn?

When is content being shared/liked the most?

Why is specific content being liked and shared the most?

You can use tools like BuzzSumo to gain a full understanding of recent, shareable content across keyword phrases in your new niche, and Twellow to ascertain who the best influencers are. Then, examine how your competition’s content is performing across these social networks using the cues and indications mentioned above.

Without Customization of Your SEO Strategy, You Are Toast

Any Google search result can be as different as the keyword phrase itself, from singular to plural to its synonyms and antonyms. By performing your due diligence and researching your target niche, you can customize your SEO strategy. The customization of your strategy is an essential step, because boilerplate SEO no longer works. Search has gotten so complex in the last 5 years with multiple layers to Google’s algorithm, that it is no longer as simple as choosing a keyword phrase, optimizing your copy, submitting your site to a few directories, and moving on.

Search is now a major source of sales for many companies. It is only through due diligence, research, and customization of your SEO strategy that you will be successful. Not identifying your target audience and the intricacies of your niche early on can be costly for you – and your client.
