According to a report on 9to5mac, Apple has bought augmented reality company Metaio. This seems to be related to Apple’s plans to work on augmented reality for their Maps. 9to5mac included what looks like an official document from the German government to confirm the sale.
With the augmented reality feature, users can point their phone’s camera towards a building and see relevant information about it pop up on their phone’s screen. In Metaio’s demo video below, they also show how augmented reality can be used to see what your home will look like with new furniture or virtually checking out product information:
