Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina joins Republican presidential fray

Fiorina proclaims on her "Carly for President" website that her time at Hewlett-Packard will prepare her well for the White House.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina is running for president, and judging by her own website and her brief history in politics, her time at the computer maker will play a major role in that bid.

Fiorina announced the news on her Twitter account and on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday. In a video posted to her Twitter account, she said that she's seeking the Republican nomination for president because she believes the US "is at a pivotal point."

She is notable in part for being the first (and perhaps only) former technology executive to enter the 2016 race for the White House. She joins a growing number of Republican candidates, including Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio, all vying first for the party's nomination and eventually to compete against the Democratic nominee, widely expected at this early date to be former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

On her "Carly for President" website, Fiorina takes a dig at Clinton, saying "Our founders never intended us to have a professional political class. ... We know that the only way to reimagine our government is to reimagine who is leading it."

In 2010, Fiorina, who has never held elective office, ran for a US Senate seat in California against incumbent Barbara Boxer. After a bitter fight that saw Fiorina's tenure at HP heavily criticized by Boxer, the former CEO won just 42 percent of the vote.

Indeed, HP could loom large for Fiorina during this campaign. During her tenure as chief executive between 1999 and 2005, she made the controversial decision in 2001 to merge with PC maker Compaq to create the world's largest PC manufacturer. Not long after the deal was announced, Walter Hewlett, the son of co-founder William Hewlett, launched a proxy fight to unseat Fiorina. He said that the Compaq merger was a poor attempt at making a strategic decision and would ultimately hurt the company. Though his proxy fight failed and Fiorina stayed in her role, Hewlett's attempts to remove her created a rift between her and the board that culminated in a messy ouster in 2005.

In her 2006 book "Tough Choices," Fiorina argued that HP's board was dysfunctional.

During her campaign against Boxer, the skeletons resurfaced as the California senator took Fiorina to task, claiming she failed to properly lead the company. Boxer also pointed to claims that Fiorina was difficult to work with and that HP shares were up following her dismissal, indicating that her work left much to be desired.

On her website, the 60-year-old Fiorina has an entire section dedicated to her HP tenure, and says that under her leadership, "great things happened at HP." She lists several accomplishments, including doubling the company's revenues, quadrupling its cash flow, and growing it from the 28th largest company in the US to the 11th.

"Carly didn't always make the most popular decisions at HP -- but, time and time again, they would prove to be the right ones," her site reads. "But even though her record as CEO speaks for itself, Carly faced headwinds from people who did not want to see HP change. They wanted to double-down on a flawed agenda that simply wasn't sustainable against the new challenges of the 21st century.

"Our nation faces this very same problem today -- where career politicians protect the current system that personally benefits them, but no longer works for the American people," the site continues.

Meanwhile, a site Fiorina's team apparently neglected to scoop up, CarlyFiorina.org, is being used to highlight the number of layoffs at HP during her tenure.

Even before her announcement Monday, Fiorina had already started to boost her presence in New Hampshire and Iowa, states that are early factors in the runup to the nomination. It's unknown how much funding Fiorina has raised so far in a contest that could require spending hundreds of millions of dollars. It's unknown what sort of support she'll find among potential Silicon Valley donors.

Fiorina plans to hold a live stream to answer questions from the public on Twitter at 1 p.m. PT on Monday.

Epson PowerLite Pro Cinema LS10000 review:

The epson LS10000 is a technological tour de force that, on paper, can make other projectors seem like shark bait. Its crowning feature is a laser light engine that lets it start up faster than other projectors in its class, never needs to be replaced, and can deliver a picture that rivals the best projectors we've tested.

All that technology comes at a steep price, however, and at the end of the day, the $8,000 LS10000, falls a bit short of other high-end projectors we've tested recently. The less-expensive JVC DLA-X700R beats it in black levels and overall contrast -- the most important aspect of picture quality -- while the more-expensive Sony VPL-VW350ES offers true 4K resolution that can actually be worthwhile on a huge screen.

Both do it with old-fashioned lamps that burn out every 3,000 hours or so, and over the lifespan of the projectors those $300-$500 lamps can add up. But not enough to make a difference to the audience these projectors are aimed at. The LS10000's main draws are superb, balanced picture quality, industry-leading startup time, and high-tech chops. If that's enough for you, it makes perfect sense.

Design

Lasers might obviate the bulb, but the LS10000's body is plenty bulbous anyway. The massive, rounded unit measures 22 inches square and weighs 40 pounds. Its shape puts me in mind of a sci-fi vision: the head of a streamlined combat robot, with a single eye in the center that can retreat behind its motorized cover when powered down.

Matching rounded vents (railgun ports?) appear to either side, and a detachable cover (armor plating?) can conceal the connections around back. Manual overrides are available via a flip-out panel on the side (if you can make it past the exterior defenses).

Epson's remote is decidedly less futuristic but presents a formidable face of its own. A big backlit button exists for direct access to seemingly every function. The menu system is nothing fancy either, filled with esoteric adjustments and nested options that are, unfortunately, par for the projector course. I challenge anyone to find Game mode on the first try.

Epson touts the quiet operation of the laser system, and indeed, during operation the LS10000 was basically silent on my ceiling mount in all settings. Fan noise is not an issue with this projector. Then again, the JVC and Sony were also exceedingly quiet in their home-theater settings, so I don't consider this a significant advantage for the Epson.

Startup time was another story. The LS10000 leapt to life, not quite as quickly as a regular TV, but faster than any lamp-based projector I can remember. It took 26 seconds from pressing the power button to projecting a fully bright, watchable image. The Sony took about that long for any image to appear at all, while the JVC took 45 seconds. In both cases, the picture started out dim and discolored and took around 1:20 to achieve full brightness and color. The Epson also restarted (from on to off to on again) in about 20 seconds, while the others had to go through cool-down periods as long as a minute and a half before being ready to turn on again.

Features

The three main projector types are DLP, LCD, and LCoS, but this Epson is none of the above. Its chips are composed of Liquid Crystal on Quartz, which Epson calls 3LCD Reflective. Of the three ,it comes closest to LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon), and according to Epson offers improved pixel density and improved aperture performance compared to LCD.

Also: frickin' lasers. Most projectors use replaceable bulbs, er, "lamps," that last around 3,000 hours before needing to be replaced. The LS10000 uses two blue lasers that last between 17,000 (in Power Consumption: High mode) and 30,000 hours (in ECO mode) and cannot be replaced. One blue laser creates the blue light, while the other blue laser hits a yellow phosphor, which is then split to create red and green. Hence RGB, the foundation of all color in video.

In addition to improved lifespan, lasers allow the LS10000 to start up and achieve full brightness faster than lamp-based projectors, stay quieter, and respond faster to changes in brightness than a typical iris. The LS10000 isn't as bright as some lamp-based units but still plenty bright for darkened home theaters.

Epson says the combination of 3LCD Reflective and lasers delivers "unprecedented black levels, displaying zero lumens during full-black scenes." Check out the Picture Quality section for what we say. Ditto for Epson's "4K Enhancement," which shifts each pixel diagonally, and adds various levels of edge enhancement, detail enhancement, interpolation and marketing magic to approximate 4K.

For more in-depth info on all the LS10000's newfangled technology, check out Geoff Morrison's report from its introduction at CEDIA 2014.

Mobile gaming will be a $45B market by 2018, leaving console gaming way behind

As the smartphone continues to take over the world, mobile gaming will outpace the rest of the industry.

Spending on gaming software across all platforms will reach $88 billion this year, according to research from intelligence firm Digi-Capital. The company also forecasts that number will grow 8 percent annually and will surpass $110 billion by 2018. And mobile will drive that growth more than any other sector as spending on smartphones and tablets will already generate more revenue than console games this year — although that doesn’t include sales from hardware like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems. And it also doesn’t include PC games on Steam or free-to-play megahits like League of Legends.

“Where mobile games will take $3 of every $10 spent by gamers on software in 2015, that figure will go up to $4 out of every $10 by 2018,” Digi-Capital founder and managing director Tim Merel wrote in the report. “Mobile games revenue will grow from $29 billion in 2015 to $45 billion by 2018 at 15 percent annual growth. Asia has dominated mobile games revenue since 2013, compared to both North America and Europe, and Digi-Capital forecasts Asia to take over 50 percent of all mobile games revenue in 2018.”

Merel says that “stable, top-grossing mobile games” will continue to make the most money, so expect Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga, and Game of War to keep their spots at the top of the charts. Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga have cemented their place atop the grossing list on both iOS and Android since 2012, and Digi-Capital doesn’t see that changing.

Mobile Game Developer?

Learn how to drastically increase your mobile revenue.

“This is great for games leaders and their shareholders,” wrote Merel. “But it puts the big squeeze on midtier players and makes breaking through more challenging for indies.”

And as these mobile leaders continue to eat up players and spend on television marketing — like during the Super Bowl — it’s only going to make it harder for smaller developers. Player acquisition costs are already at around $3 per download, which is prohibitively expensive for many studios. It also reduces profit margins for those companies that do manage to break through.

“Despite the squeeze on smaller developers, we’re seeing a big drop in the price of mobile marketing automation technologies,” Stewart Rogers, an analyst at VB Insight, said. “The very solutions that the likes of Plants vs. Zombies, Rivals at War, and Subway Surfers use to stay ahead of the pack are becoming available to all, and that will continue as the market grows.”

With billions at stake and billions more pouring into the industry every year, the difficulties of the market probably won’t turn many people off from trying. Especially with emerging markets like China, India, and others adopting smartphones at a rapid rate.

Two By Two review – plodding Euro animation

Two evolutionary outcasts, a Nestrian and a Grymp, are forced to fend for themselves – and each other – when Noah’s ark departs without them. Teaming up with what appears to be a giant slug (looking like an escapee from some misbegotten Manga), the pair must make their hazardous way to higher ground, encountering various slippy/slidey adventures en route, all the while escaping the attentions of a pair of ravenous griffins.

Co-produced by Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and Ireland, this bland animated Euro-pudding has little to offend and even less to excite as it follows its formulaic journey toward a communal group-hug. There are a couple of giggles along the way, but nothing you haven’t seen or heard before in the wholly superior Madagascar and Ice Age series. Local hero Chris Evans provides the voice of sticky parasite StayPut, a role that requires him to shout “woo-hoo” once too often.

Google Play Gets “May The Fourth Be With You” Home Page Link On Star Wars Day

Google Play is well positioned for a very happy Star Wars Day.

While Bartolomeo Cristofori, inventor of the piano, holds court on the Google.com homepage this May 4, the search engine’s homepage is also paying homage to Star Wars Day — with a plug for Google Play.

The official slogan for the unofficial Star Wars Day, “May the Fourth be with you”, appears in a link below the search box. The link leads to the selection of Star Wars movie offerings available on Google Play.

This isn’t the first time Google has used the home page to promote its products. The company featured links to Android phone products, including the Nexus One.

When the Nexus One promotion went live, way back in 2010, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster calculated the value of that placement on Google’s homepage was worth between $4 and $5 million — based on a $15 or $20 CPM — if it had had to be bought.

Top 10 Insights On Local Search & Marketing From The Experts At LSA 15

1. Mobile Location Data Drives More Than Location Targeted Marketing

There was no single theme throughout the conference stronger than the takeover of mobile devices for local search and marketing — and the inevitable shift that the industry and local businesses must make to adapt.

A game changer in targeted marketing is the accurate, real-time location provided by mobile devices. This location information provides much richer and deeper insight about a consumer that can be profiled for tastes, preferences, or desires. It can also be used to predict future behavior or purchases.

For example, a traditional singular location data point might target everyone at an airport, whereas matching that with a recently tracked location on a runway would help narrow that pool to arriving passengers since departing passengers must turn off their cell signal prior to leaving the gate and arriving passengers often turn theirs on as soon as they land. Likewise, frequent airport visitors on weekdays would help profile business travelers as opposed to weekend visitors that likely represent vacation travelers.

2. Richer Data From Multiple Sources Will Be Combined to Give A Fuller Consumer Profile

Cross-device use can be tracked across anything connected to the internet (including TVs and set-top boxes), opening the door for small businesses to take advantage of media channels previously only available to larger companies. For example, instead of serving TV ads to a huge mass market, ads can be served to specifically targeted viewers or alternatively served to those viewers’ mobile devices.

The power of building a fuller consumer profile grows exponentially when you layer in other devices (such as beacons and PCs) and other information (such as search history, purchase history, dwell time, frequency or repeat visits, date/time, likes, site visits and many other forms of captured information). The future consumer profile will likely be specific and robust although privacy legislation may temper the effectiveness or limit the use of such information.

3. Adoption Of Mobile Commerce Remains An Uphill Battle For Now

Uber is the darling of mobile commerce, causing many to proclaim it is the model of the future. Its ability to leverage quick conversions and task completions have set the standard for user experience.

Yet, some argue Uber is one of a kind, pointing out the difference between hiring a driver and other services, like a hairdresser. Drivers are a much more “fungible” service, whereas most consumers are very picky about their hairdresser.

There also remain significant barriers to adoption from both the merchant side and consumer side, as evidenced by an estimated 5% of restaurants that have adopted automated tools such as online reservations or ordering. Transitioning SMB processes online often requires significant time or resource investment, and existing customer habits are hard or even risky to try and break.

Sharon Rowlands of ReachLocal also expressed concern that while on-demand services are good for the consumer at first blush, often the economics do not work for merchants, and ultimately that is bad for the consumer.  It’s expected that the model will continue to evolve.

4. The Benefits Of Mobile Commerce Will Win Out, Ultimately

The ability to capture high conversion leads 24/7 without manning the phone or interrupting other operations is worth the time to learn new systems and integrate old ones with modern technology. And the promise of increased ROI and integration of back-end merchant systems to increase efficiency will likely prevail.

From a consumer standpoint, convenience and efficiency will also prove valuable. Automated reminders for appointments, more targeted search results like real time inventory or availability, and current hours or wait times will drive use of and demand for mobile commerce.

Yelp Now is an example of a new automation service that supports businesses using both the front end information from consumers and back-end information from SMBs. Search results can be limited by reservation availability for restaurants that have a table at 7:00 PM on Thursday or be limited to restaurants that deliver to a specific area or address based on information obtained from the business.

5. The Difference Between What SMBs Want And What SMBs Get Leads To High Churn

LSA hosted an SMB digital boot camp for over 100 L.A. area local businesses. Based off of dialogue with and questions asked by SMBs, it is apparent that small businesses want low-cost, DIY solutions. This is reinforced by the fact that 86% of those surveyed at the event utilized social media for marketing.

Yet most in the industry — including agencies, publishers, and even those that offer self-serve products such as Google — agree that, given the complexity of the space, working with a partner is recommended. This dichotomy between what SMBs want and what advice SMBs get may explain the high churn rate of small business advertisers who leave ad agencies.

A preview of a study soon to be jointly released by Vendasta and LSA revealed a direct relationship between cost and churn rate, whether that cost be direct pricing, related to the service model (DIY vs. DIWM/DIFM), or low lead value and ROI.

6. What SMBs Want Is Starting To Change The Industry Business Model

A number of companies are creating or changing business models around the demand for low-cost or proven value services. For example, ReachLocal is changing its compensation system to incentivize sales reps to value good-fit clients and high retention rates. Closely’s Perch platform focuses on being a resource that provides free information with strong content marketing in order to help customers identify where or why they need help.

Education is the primary funnel for new clients — even education on DIY tools as many SMBs will realize they still need a partner to do the job right. DIWM (Do it with me) solutions will offer a nice compromise for small businesses and iterative or modular services will be more attractive to those with small budgets.

7. Programmatic Advertising Will Change The Industry As Much As Digital Changed Traditional Advertising

Programmatic advertising offers such great efficiencies, broad yet targeted reach, and customized control of cost and audience, that some experts predict that those who do not embrace the technology will soon be out of business. The technology is good for advertisers who can access all media channels including premium inventory that might previously have been unobtainable.

It’s good for publishers, too — private marketplaces and preferred placements that required volume minimums or had exclusive access are now being sold through programmatic means because it reduces wasted inventory.  By making media distribution more efficient, programmatic also saves resources that can be invested into better creative or content.

8. Content Is Key

All the technology and data that helps identify and target an ideal customer is wasted if the right content isn’t delivered. As content becomes more personalized and hyper-localized, consumers will expect and only respond to content that meets this new, higher standard.

In other words, content must be relevant to the consumer and in context with what he or she is currently searching for or viewing. Examples include native ads, timely coupons or deals, and customized landing pages. Engaging with out-of-home screens and other emotional impact creative will also be more common.

This marriage between creative and technology, and understanding where and to whom ads are being served, is key to maximizing return on targeted advertising. Companies like xAd and Thinknear whose reputations come from their location targeting expertise are now closing the loop and engaging in content and/or graphic creation.

9. The Yellow Pages Are Alive And Kicking

Some of the best creatives and best marketing we saw at the conference were from Yellow Pages companies.

YP’s #MakeEveryDayLocal campaign is the latest in a series of marketing efforts directly targeted at consumers that support its brand and that demonstrate its digital strength. One video in the campaign followed Hannah Storm to her favorite local businesses and told a compelling story while showing off serious marketing chops.

The Canadian Yellow Pages just released two of its award winning apps for the Apple Watch including YP Shopwise, representing some of the first Canadian apps available on the device. Both companies and DexMedia, another yellow pages publisher are embracing their yellow pages history, deeming it easier to evolve the “platform” rather than recreate it, and their output is impressive.

10. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Is The Future

Space-age devices, massive volumes of data, and programmatic algorithms to derive smarter results from that data all lead to the ultimate technology: artificial intelligence. In a sense, that is what it seems we are striving for — to know an individual consumer’s history, determine his or her desires, and serve the perfect message at the right time while delivering a customized, personal experience.

In the future, personal assistants in the mode of Siri, Google Now or Cortana will know you and predict what you need before you ask it to. They will be able to complete tasks with single commands and minimal input on how, where or what to do.  Personal assistants will not be tied to a device but rather use voice recognition on whatever device is in the vicinity.

Sound scary?  Check out this video that Microsoft played at LSA 15 introducing Cortana for a glimpse into the future.

Sneak Peek Into AdWords’ New Multidimensional Reports

Google has begun rolling out its new Report Editor to AdWords accounts, but very few advertisers have access to this feature yet. Luckily, columnist Susan Waldes is among them and has decided to share her findings here!

Just over a year ago (April 22, 2014), during a livestream about upcoming AdWords features, Google announced it would be rolling out advanced reporting for AdWords. The accompanying blog post stated:

Advanced reporting: To help you analyze your data better (without the endless downloading and re-formatting of data) we’re providing you with new multi-dimensional data analysis and visualization tools so you can perform most, if not all of your data analysis, right here inside AdWords. We’re also making it easy for you to turn your data into tables, graphs and charts so that you can download them and share with your teams.

This announcement generated a good deal of excitement from the SEM community. With a whole year come and gone and the buzz quieting to a whisper, Google’s timing of that announcement, from the perspective of achieving optimal PR, can certainly be questioned.

Currently, the new functionality is starting to roll out to a very limited number of accounts. Of the approximately 100 accounts that I have access to, I’m only seeing the new “Reports Editor” in one. (The account also happens to be completely shut off at the moment.)

If you have the new Report Editor, you’ll see a “Reports” link on the top navigation between “Campaigns” and “Opportunities.” If not, the link to “Reports” is on the left navigation sidebar.

A couple weeks ago when I discovered the new reports, the update box on the Help Center article about the reporting feature said it would be rolling out to all accounts in April and May. However, as of today, that box says it will roll out “over the next few months.” It appears that whatever obstacles put a year between announcement and launch may also be delaying launch even further.

So while SEMs continue patiently waiting to get access to the Reports Editor, I thought I’d share some sneak peeks at the new functionality.

The Visual Charts

The Reports Editor can create on-the-fly line, bar and pie charts. Bar and pie charts are completely new to AdWords. Line charts have an updated look and much more comprehensive functionality.

I’m not typically a fan of pie charts for SEM metrics. The data reduction required doesn’t give a holistic view of the account reality. However, occasionally there is a use for pie charts, like this quick visual of how impressions are distributed across match types:

Line charts have always been available within the AdWords UI; the upcoming updates both make the data more presentable as well as introduce much richer ways to look at data.

Formerly, time was the only choice for the X-axis in a line chart. The visual chart was very thin and horizontal, making it less than ideal for using in client presentations. Additionally, a maximum of two trend lines on a limited set of pure metric data was available for charting.

The bar charts are another way to present data over time. They also allow many other ways to use your X-axis. For bar charts, your initial segment can either be time or something else like device, click type, or top vs. side (data points currently accessed through segment reporting).

You have the ability to chart bars for two metrics within your chosen segment. For instance, here I am looking at account-wide conversions and Cost/Conv by device:

These new, visual ways of looking at data are useful for client reporting and presentations. Surely, it will also be easier to hone in on new problem or focus areas within an account that emerge more clearly with these new visual tools.

The Data Tables

The new data tables will be much more frequently used than the charts. They represent improvements to the current reporting capabilities in a few ways:

They are created quickly and “on-the-fly” within the reporting system. Ever set up a complex report, downloaded it, opened it in Excel, then realized you forgot one column or segment and you had to do it all over again? That won’t happen anymore, as the data is built right in the UI.

“Segments” are presented as columns rather than indented rows in the UI, which makes comparison and sorting less cumbersome.
The data presented can be filtered regardless of whether or not the filter is also a column in your report.

There are some entirely new available data points.

Time periods on saved reports can be changed on the fly rather than having to “regenerate” data in each time period.

For instance, this report shows a totally new data point (conversions metrics on search queries). It shows a segment as a column rather than as an indented row (the “conversion action names” column) and I’ve filtered it to only show this data for mobile devices. Formerly this kind of filtering could only be done by including all devices as a segment, then downloading and extracting only the mobile data in Excel:

The Impact

The most interesting reports to me are those that tease at new ways to look at data that will lead to new techniques, best practices and optimizations.

For instance, looking at mobile conversion volume by hour-of-day and day-of-week, I can quickly see that Wednesday mornings are key for driving mobile conversion volume for this particular advertiser.

It’s data that I could have extracted from the current reporting capabilities, but I’d have had to “know” that I wanted to look at data in this manner, then go through a complex process of report building, downloading, pivoting, and filtering in Excel to get to the point where I could see this.

In this new system, I just pulled in some columns and filtered in about five seconds; simply “poking around” drove this new insight. Surely, there are multitudes of similar insights that will be facilitated by this new reporting. Some of them will be very account-specific, and others are sure to lead to new industry practices.

I do not advise holding your breath while waiting for this (already very delayed) feature to roll out globally.

I do advise reading more about the capabilities and starting to think about how your reporting and data analysis can be improved in this new environment. In addition, as this rolls out to more accounts, stay on alert for new techniques that will surely emerge, facilitated by new ways of looking at data, which can meaningfully improve your results.

Some opinions expressed in this article may be those of a guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land. Staff authors are listed here.

Google Confirms New Experiment With Twitter In Search Results

Google Confirms New Experiment With Twitter In Search Results

Google is expected to begin showing Twitter content in search this month, is this a screen shot of tweets in Google's mobile search results?

Google is finally making use of the new deal it signed with Twitter to put tweets into Google’s search results. The company today confirmed a “small experiment” that some are seeing.

Dan Martin from Razorfish shared a screenshot with us this morning showing one of the experiments where tweets are integrated in Google’s search results trending topics:

We asked Google about this, which confirmed it was a test:

As mentioned in Twitter’s earnings call back in January, we’ve partnered to bring their real-time content to Google Search. We’ve started some small experiments in mobile search, but we don’t have more to announce at this point.

Google and Twitter signed a deal in February giving greater access to Twitter’s data. Google was already crawling Twitter for data despite this deal, so tweets being in Google’s search results isn’t a new change. But the deal gave Google the ability to get even more information than it could crawl regularly. Our story, FAQ: How Twitter’s New Deal To Bring Tweets To Google Search Works, explains more.

Since the deal was signed, we’ve been waiting for the new uses to begin. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said last week to expect this in May. Now it’s happening, at least on a test basis.

Martin said he sees it happening on and off on his Android device for many trending topics right now, such as [maythe4thbewithyou], [Carly Fiorina], [Jimmy Greaves] and other searches. I personally cannot replicate this on any of my devices, but it would not surprise me if Google is now testing this and may roll it out any day.

Here are some addition screen shots:

Planning, Budgeting, and Measuring an SEO Campaign

When it comes to SEO, many business owners just don’t know enough to truly understand how to plan an effective SEO campaign. They don’t know the difference between white hat, black hat, or raspberry beret. Unethical spammers take advantage of this every day, with a barrage of emails pitching business owners on SEO services with "guaranteed first page results" on Google.

I can understand the appeal of these emails. Most business owners just don’t have the time to do their own SEO and run their business, too. Since Internet marketing is mostly a mystery to those outside of the industry, why not buy the "bargain brand"?

Unfortunately, I see the collateral damage from "cheap SEO" all the time. One of my firm’s specialties is Google penalty recovery. Most clients that get whacked by a penalty had no idea what their SEO company was doing. They are mad, frustrated, and angry, because they "didn’t do anything wrong."

That’s where the tough love comes in. I have to remind clients they are ultimately responsible for the companies working on their behalf to follow the Google webmaster guidelines. Of course, most never knew there were any guidelines, before their website disappeared from Google’s search results. The only thing they did wrong was place their trust in a firm that ultimately destroyed their organic search traffic and in some cases, their business. That’s the hidden expense of "cheap SEO."

Failing to Plan = Planning to Fail

The cliché is true – without a plan, it’s impossible to track progress or measure success. There is no "one size fits all" marketing plan. Every website is different and each has its own unique challenges. When developing a plan, one first needs to establish goals and objectives. The next step is to determine the best path for reaching those goals.

The key thing to remember about digital marketing is that it is an ongoing process. The need to check your website for technical issues, add content, and acquire links never ends. Equally important to understand is that is that unlike PPC, it takes time to see results from SEO.

Even though every plan is unique, the wireframe for a successful SEO campaign generally includes some or all the following elements:

Foundation Check (SEO Audit): Check a website for technical health as well as potential SEO problems or shortcomings. Once you have a handle on the problems, develop a corrective action plan. The plan should be specific, time-phased, and measurable.

Backlink Audit: I’m a fan of being proactive in this area. Don’t wait for a Penguin update to wipe out your rankings in the SERPs or an "unnatural links" warning to hit your inbox. The best time to perform a link audit is BEFORE you have a problem.

Keyword Research & Keyword Selection: Modern SEO is so much more than ranking number one for a trophy phrase. That said, incorporating highly searched and relevant phrases into your website optimization plan is still important. Plenty of great guides are available right here to help you with your KW research.

On-Page Optimization: At minimum, pay attention to:

Meta Tag Optimization

Important html Tags

Keyword Optimization

Link Optimization

SEO Co-Citation

Image Optimization

Competitor Analysis: The best way to stay ahead of the competition is to fully understand the competition; specifically their strengths and weaknesses. A comprehensive competitor analysis will provide that knowledge.

Content Marketing: This should be considered a perpetual task and ideally will follow a dual track. Part of your strategy should be focused on attracting links and creating content designed for that purpose. Equally important is creating "Hummingbird food" – useful resources that provide information that’s relevant to your niche and a searcher’s query.

Link-Building: Link-building the right way in 2015 is hard. I suspect that’s the reason that so many people like to declare link-building as ineffective or less effective as in the past. It’s an excuse to get out of doing the heavy lifting. If links didn’t matter, Google wouldn’t have an algorithm devoted to routing out the bad ones (aka penguin). Backlinks = Rankings, Rankings = Traffic – Deal With It
Social Media: This is another task that should be run with a dual purpose; specifically, audience building and social media marketing. Keep in mind that social media marketing requires genuine human to human interaction in order to work.

Your Budget

How much should you expect to spend on SEO? The amount varies, but hiring a top-level SEO company to execute a comprehensive digital marketing campaign, will require a minimum budget of $2,500 to $5,000 month. If you’re a small business focused strictly on local SEO, prices are generally much less. Some companies will offer an entry-level "trial package" at a reduced price, with no commitment, to give clients an opportunity to test their services. I personally like this approach, as it takes a lot of stress out of the decision making process, by minimizing risk.

Not everyone can afford a monthly retainer for a top-level SEO. More importantly, no one can afford a "cheap SEO" that breaks Google webmaster guidelines. That said, there are cost-effective options available. The most common option is a one shot – hiring an SEO company to do a single task that can provide value. An SEO audit, for example, can provide a business owner with feedback and actionable recommendations. Keyword research and content creation are also available a la carte through some agencies. If you don’t have the budget for a one shot, do it yourself.

Define Your Goals

The only way to know if you’re getting a good return on your investment is to have some kind of metric for evaluating your Web traffic. Regardless of your budget, you want to be getting a good ROI. During your initial planning, you need to decide how you’re going to measure success. When talking about SEO, many people immediately think of success as being at the top of search result. You might use ranking as ONE form of measurement, but don’t make it your only or most important metric.

Instead of measuring on your ranking, measure on a real-world statistic. If you were evaluating an offline marketing campaign, you might look at things such as increased sales or an increase in the number of customers. You can use these metrics online, too. One goal might be to see your sales increase by five percent every month for a year or to gain 50 new subscribers to your email newsletters.

There are two important factors when looking at measurements: make it something that is measurable and make your goal reasonable. It’s very hard to measure something like interest in a product — you don’t know if people viewing the product website are truly interested or not, and even if you have some kind of way for people to say they’re interested, you don’t know that everyone who is will click that button. However, you can very easily measure unique visitors, purchases, and page views.

After you’ve embarked on a brand new SEO campaign, don’t expect a huge spike in organic traffic, right away. Keep the measurements for your first year reasonable and attainable. Digital marketing is a marathon – not a sprint.

Most business models rely on customers buying from them more than one time. Smart companies have a philosophy of retaining a "customer for life." Failure to calculate the lifetime value of a newly acquired client distorts the true ROI. The proper way to calculate ROI, assuming a repeat customer model, follows:

Takeaway

Digital marketing continues to offer one of the best ROI’s of all marketing channels. If you can’t afford a reputable firm, then you should do it yourself. Don’t let your company be destroyed by "cheap SEO."

7 SEO Fundamentals More Important Than Link Building

Link building has been a subject of controversy for the past few months, as comments from Google’s own John Mueller and evidence from the latest round of the Penguin update have called into question the overall legitimacy of link building as an SEO strategy.

Up until recently, link building was considered to be indispensable to any SEO campaign—because Google considers the quantity and quality of external links pointing back to a domain as a major indication of that domain’s authority, it only made sense that building more links would have a proportional effect on increasing that authority.

However, Google appears to be cracking down on the practice of external link building, putting new regulations in place to closely scrutinize the quality of external links and in most cases, recommending that search marketers avoid the practice altogether. The SEO community has responded in a deep divide, with one side claiming that link building should be avoided at all costs and the other insisting that it’s still a viable strategy.

I believe that link building is still an important part of any SEO campaign, because correlation studies continue to indicate that links have the heaviest impact on the ranking algorithm, but I do recognize that its power has weakened and its risks have increased in recent years. While inbound links are essential for any SEO campaign, link building as a tactic is no longer essential.  Instead, a quality content strategy which attracts links like a magnet (rather than engaging in outbound efforts to acquire links) appears to be what Google is trying to nudge webmasters toward. Still, there are dozens of other fundamental factors far more important than link building that should take immediate priority. These are some of the most important:

1. Mobile Optimization.

First, make sure your site is optimized for mobile. After Google’s recent “Mobilegeddon” update, there’s now no excuse for having a site that isn’t mobile-compatible. Hopefully, your site is responsive, which will allow it to be viewed consistently no matter what type of device is used to access it. Without some level of mobile optimization, your site may be doomed to low search visibility. Beyond that, it’s worth optimizing your site for speed as well—the faster your pages load, the better your overall user experience will be, and Google will rank your pages higher as a result.

2. Site Navigation.

Google rewards sites that make it easy for users to find what they want, whether that’s information, a service, or a particular product. Optimize your navigation so it’s easy to find any page; the common way to do this is to group your pages in a single, minimalist navigation bar with descriptive core headings and full lists of pages underneath. It’s also helpful to include a search bar and interlink your content deeply so no single page of your site is ever more than two or three clicks away. Your goal should be getting your users to their ideal destination as quickly and easily as possible.

3. Full, Informative Content.

Every page of your site needs to have a full section of descriptive, accurate content. On your home page, users should be able to immediately tell what your business is. On your About page, you should list important facts about your company. On your Contact page (and home page), you need to list your business name, address, and phone number at the very least. The more accurate and the more thorough your content is, the higher you’re going to rank.

4. Regular Ongoing Content.

Without an ongoing content strategy program to support it, an external link building campaign is practically useless. Every business needs to be developing and publishing least one new piece of content every week—the more the better. This content needs to be wholly original, informative, and useful for its target audience. Without that ongoing fresh content, your site will quickly fall to the competition.

5. A Social Media Presence.

And by a social media presence, I don’t mean a stagnant or token presence on Facebook and Twitter. If you’re going to get social, you need to get involved. Claim your business’s profile on as many social media platforms as you can, and post regularly on those platforms. Work to build contacts, connections, and a real ongoing community with syndicated content, company updates, and of course exclusive offers. The greater your social presence is, the higher esteem you’ll hold with Google. For more on social media marketing, see my eBook, The Definitive Guide to Social Media Marketing.
