Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ:MSFT) answer to Playstation's Instant Game Collection has been somewhat underwhelming. With the exception of 'Rayman Legends', the list is yet to provide gamers with a title to convince them that Xbox One is indeed the right place for gaming.

Microsoft began its Games With Gold offer, which provided Xbox Live Gold members with free games every month. The first game that the company offered its customers was 'Fable III', since then it has offered numerous critically acclaimed games on Xbox 360, however its line-up on the Xbox One has not been all that good.

The company has developed a very customer-friendly base with the Xbox One. With memberships like EA Access, the Xbox One offers games at an insanely low price. However, its Games With Gold line-up has not particularly been great, especially when looking at Xbox One games that the membership has offered so far.

There is no doubt that the membership has been a great promoter for the indie games that would have had a hard time in gaining popularity otherwise. It has also managed to give a boost to small indie game developers by helping them in establishing a name. However, an outstanding game every now and then would be very welcoming, given that the console faces very stiff competition from the PlayStation 4.

This month's line-up is also a lackluster one, with Microsoft offering Xbox One gamers a chance to download 'CastleStorm' for free and Xbox 360 owners the opportunity to experience the mediocre 'Mafia II' along with F1 2013. Surely, nothing is bad for free but it is not a line-up that would make customers, who have not purchased the console, regret their decision.

To be fair to Microsoft, it has not been a long while since the Xbox One came out, and as the library of games on the console increases, the amount and quality of Games with Gold also increase. However, Microsoft's Xbox One is in a situation where it has to offer the best value if it is to compete with the overly popular PS4. It has to be an accumulation of services that Xbox One will have to offer if it is to beat the PS4. Price drops alone would not be enough to challenge PS' authority in regions like Europe.

The Xbox One now has a huge library of games, which are relatively old. However, the company could use them since most people demand triple A titles. Sony's Instant Game Collection has been slightly better than Games With Gold as it has already offered the likes of 'Injustice' and 'Infamous First Light', furthermore it usually gives its users the opportunity to cross-purchase games.

While Games With Gold is a promising membership, it needs to improve if it is to compete with its counterpart. These little things will go on to have a huge impact at a later stage on this generation of video games.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection was the franchise’s first entry on Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One. While it was great to play through the franchise's previous titles, Halo: MCC did not have such a smooth launch. Gamers were left disappointed with bugs especially related to the online multiplayer game.

According to Cinema Blend, Microsoft's upcoming Halo 5: Guardians is expected to have a much better and bug-free launch. While speaking to Xbox Achievements, Halo’s Franchise Development Director, Frank O’Connor stated, “Halo: The Master Chief Collection is definitely a black eye for us. We’re not going to rest on our laurels or hide from the mistakes we made. 

However, I will say that the nature of The Master Chief Collection - you’ve got five different game engines, you’ve got five different studios working on it, you’ve got 343 working on putting it all together - the footprint and complexity was outrageous.”

How will Halo 5: Guardians be different from The Master Chief Collection? O’Connor adds, “Halo 5 is being made by a completely different team. It’s a singular product. It was built from the ground up for this new technology, rather than being sort of dragged, kicking and screaming from 2001 and forced and shoehorned into a 2014 console. So the problem spaces are still very challenging but they’re radically different. I think the beta is already a decent first step, in a retail environment, showing that we don’t have the same problems.”

Halo: MCC’s multiplayer bugs were attempted to be fixed by various patches but they have not been completely eliminated. Microsoft may have run out of bug spray for Halo:MCC, but fortunately it has enough to spray on Halo 5: Guardians before it releases on October 27, 2015.

Thankfully, a multiplayer beta for Halo 5: Guardians between December and January by 343 Industries has given them enough information, since a second beta is not on the agenda yet. Halo is Microsoft’s biggest cash cow and it has perhaps kept the Xbox brand alive, since the first Xbox released over a decade ago.

It is understandable that to take two generations worth of games and adapt it to the latest console may not be an easy task. However, there should still not be any excuse for mistakes on Halo: MCC. At least, Microsoft has admitted that it was a ‘black eye’ for them and they expect Halo 5: Guardians to do a lot better.

According to a report by Gamespot, Microsoft plans to kick off the first proper new Halo title on the Xbox One, by releasing a limited edition, Halo 5-themed console. 343 Industries Studio Head, Josh Holmes, revealed on popular social media platform Twitter, that a Halo 5 edition of the Xbox One is in the process.

Salesforce.com Inc (CRM) Shares Leap Amid Reports Of Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Bid

Shares of Salesforce.com Inc. (NYSE:CRM) leaped nearly 6 percent in afternoon trading Tuesday, hitting a 52-week high, amid reports that software giant Microsoft Corporation is evaluating a bid for the cloud computing company, Bloomberg reported. Salesforce is working with two investment banks to determine a response to the approaches, Bloomberg said, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.

Shares of Salesforce were halted around 3 p.m. EDT after rising 5.9 percent in afternoon trading following the report. The San Francisco-based company, which went public in 2004, has a market value of $48 billion. Salesforce.com’s options could include rebuffing any buyer, or working out a sale, Bloomberg said.

Salesforce’s stock soared to all-time highs last week amid takeover rumors after Bloomberg reported that it is working with financial advisers to help with a potential takeover offer.

The cloud-computing market continues to heat up, as Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft, Google Inc. and International Business Machines Corp. compete for business. Microsoft is now reportedly jumping into the mix after Bloomberg said last week German multinational software corporation SAP SE and Oracle Corporation were the leading contenders for a Salesforce acquisition. 

Oracle CEO Safra Catz said last week an acquisition of Salesforce would create disruption in the software market. “If it’s acquired by somebody else, it’s probably good for us, to be honest,” Catz said Thursday during a discussion with reporters in Redwood City, California. “It’ll cause a lot of disruption in that market.”

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, has attempted to shift to cloud and mobile-based revenue streams as more consumers shift from personal computers. Revenue from the company’s commercial cloud computing, which includes Office 365 and Azure services, surged 106 percent last quarter, offsetting declines in commercial Office and licensing segments.

Microsoft's Azure service is a cloud-hosting platform that competes with Amazon Web Services. The e-commerce giant revealed sales figures last month for its cloud computing unit, Amazon Web Services, for the first time. It generated revenue of $1.57 billion in the first quarter, up from $1.05 billion last year.

Salesforce shares closed up 1.6 percent to $72.75, while Microsoft's stock ended the session down 1.3 percent to $47.60.

Android Lollipop is now onto version 5.1.1, but some devices are still yet to receive version 5.0, while others are halfway between both. HTC's Nexus 9 is one of them, with a recent update that moved the tablet to Android 5.0.2.

Some of you may be wondering: why not fast track the Nexus 9 to 5.1 considering it's a Google-backed device?

GSM Arena noted that it's "quite baffling" that the slate has not been among those upgraded to the latest Android OS version.

"Other Nexus devices have since made the jump to 5.0.2, then 5.1, and now 5.1.1, but the Nexus 9 with its 64-bit Nvidia chip has been left out," the site observed.

"The update to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop is on its way to Nexus 9 owners, and it's around 23MB in size," GSM Arena said further. "After applying it, you'll be on build number LRX22L. As the minor version number jump from 5.0.1 to 5.0.2 implies, this one should be all about the bug fixes."

Despite the fact that "the latest and arguably greatest of the tablets that carry the Nexus name" is well behind other Nexus tablets, its 5.0.2 upgrade is a step forward, noted Phone Arena, which also offered speculations on why the device is behind in the OS upgrading department.

"According to one theory, the NVIDIA Tegra K1 SoC under the hood of the Nexus 9 is the reason why the tablet is treated like Google's illegitimate child," the tech news site said. "However, there is a possibility that the Android 5.0.2 update is a required pre-requisite for Android 5.1.1 and perhaps the Nexus 9 will be updated shortly to the latest build of Google's open source OS."

This prompts users to wonder whether this NVIDIA chip would make the Nexus 9 the last one to get the necessary updates - an ironic twist of fate considering that this tablet is considered among the best ones on the market.

"The HTC-made Nexus 9 was meant to be a blueprint - a benchmark for all other tablets," Slash Gear said in its review of the device. "A tablet with this build quality, the hunger for futuristic features like NVIDIA has for their SHIELD lineup, and an advertising budget like Samsung has - those are the qualities needed to create a competitor for the iPad in today's market."

The Nexus 9 tablet has an 8.9-inch screen having a 1536 x 2048 resolution, with a 288ppi pixel density. It has 2GB of RAM and is available with either 16GB or 32 GB storage options. It has a dual core 2.3GHz CPU and an 8MP rear camera, as well as a 1.6 MP front-facing camera.

Microsoft introduces Azure DNS in public preview, expanding its cloud capabilities

The big keynote at Microsoft’s enterprise-oriented Ignite conference in Chicago this week happened yesterday, but that isn’t stopping Microsoft from making announcements outside the keynote. Today, Microsoft unveiled new cloud-networking capabilities, including a new service for domain hosting called Azure DNS.

“Azure DNS is a new service to host DNS domains and provides name resolution using Microsoft’s global infrastructure,” Yousef Khalidi, an engineer working on networking for Microsoft’s Azure public cloud, wrote in a blog post today.

“By hosting your domains in Azure, you can manage your DNS records using the same credentials, APIs, tools and billing as your other Azure services. Azure DNS uses anycast networking, so that each DNS query is answered by the closest available DNS server. Azure DNS is also backed by a global footprint of DNS origin servers, providing you robust performance and fast query times.”

The feature is available today in public preview, with a 50 percent discount, Khalidi wrote. The first 25 hosted DNS zones cost 25 cents per zone per month, and the first billion DNS queries cost 20 cents per million.

The rollout comes almost five years after market-leading public cloud Amazon Web Services announced Route 53, its domain name system (DNS) service. Google announced its DNS service, Cloud DNS, in March 2014. Google and Amazon’s services use anycast networking, just like the new Azure service.

Sony is bringing streamable PS3 games … to the PS3

Don't retire your PS3 just yet, Sony has announced that its subscription game-streaming service PlayStation Now is officially coming to the gracefully aging system starting in the US on May 12.

The service, already available on the PS4 and select phones, will supposedly also have a PS Vita version "coming soon" according to the Tokyo-based company.

If you're not a member already, pricing starts at $20 for the all-you-can play subscription tier that has over 100 games available to stream instantly or an a la carte option for individual titles that starts around $1.99 for four hours of game time.

Get ready to see more ads in mobile Google searches

Google searches on mobile browsers will soon look a little different.

The company introduced a new lineup of mobile ads Tuesday, which include specialized ads for cars, hotels and home mortgages. One of the driving factors behind the new mobile-focused ads is the increasing dominance of smartphones, Google said.

Speaking at an AdWords event Tuesday, Google's VP of product management for Adwords, Jerry Dischler, noted that Google searches on mobile devices have surpassed those on the desktop in more than 10 countries, including the United States, Canada and Japan.

"Each is designed to help marketers connect with consumer needs and motivations in the moments that matter most," Dischler said. "We expect online experiences to be tailored to our needs. Availability is part of relevancy and a great ad experience addresses our immediate needs."

The new Automobile Ads focus on providing images of various aspects of the car, along with other information that's important to potential car buyers. Search results with the new ads will display a carousel of photos that users can swipe through to see more details about the way a particular model looks. They can also browse specs and nearby dealerships from within the Google.com search results.

Hotel Ads have similar functionality. Search results for hotels will turn up information on rates, availability, reviews as well as location details and photos, from Google's hotel partners.

Google will also be expanding Google Compare, a tool that right now helps drivers compare different car insurance policies, to include home mortgages. This feature, which is "coming soon," according to Google, will allow people to get "the latest mortgage rates from multiple mortgage providers, and review a customized set of criteria like interest rate, terms of the loan and fees," the company wrote on its blog.

The new Adwords products are Google's latest effort at improving mobile search. The company recently introduced a new search algorithm that prioritizes mobile-friendly results over businesses that don't have websites optimized for smaller touchscreen displays.

How to use Google's Password Alert tool to thwart phishing attacks

Google's built a new tool in the fight against phishing. The free Password Alert Chrome extension keeps track of where you enter your Google account password and alerts you when you've entered it someplace other than accounts.google.com.

This does two things: it prevents you from re-using your Google password on other sites, and it protects you if you've entered your password on a site that's pretending to be Google to collect your private information, a practice also known as phishing.

For a quick primer, phishing is when a group or individual poses as a legitimate company or organization to obtain your sensitive information, such as passwords, social security numbers or credit card numbers. In a phishing attack, you might get an email from someone pretending to be Google asking you to type in your account details on a malicious website.

If you were to enter your Google password on that website, Password Alert will show a message letting you know that "Your Gmail password was just exposed to a non-Gmail page" and that you should change your password immediately. This message appears as soon as you finish typing the final character in your password, and it works whether you're signing up for a new account or simply trying to log in into a non-Google website.

Password Alert is very easy to set up and use. Here's how to get started:

Install the Password Alert extension from the Chrome Web Store.

The extension will prompt you to enter your username and password for your Google account, even if you're already logged in.

After you enter that information, Password Alert will start monitoring where you enter your Google password.

When Password Alert is enabled, you'll see an alert whenever you enter your Google or Gmail password anywhere outside of Google. You can choose to ignore it, if you know you've entered your password on a safe website (like Amazon or Facebook), or click the link to reset your password.

Meerkat adds Facebook support, 'mobbing' to iOS app

Mobbing means Meerkat will syndicate popular streams to its own feed to boost viewership and interest in popular streams.

Meerkat has made a significant change to its iOS app that could help it break out from its reliance on Twitter.

The app, which lets users live-stream video to friends, now includes support for Facebook. The feature, which was launched on Saturday, means users can announce their ongoing and upcoming live streams to their Facebook friends. The app also includes support for Address Book integration, allowing users to automatically connect using Meerkat with their contacts.

The update is an important improvement. Meerkat, which has been available for the last few months, previously relied exclusively on Twitter to publish streams to friends. So, when a user would start to live-stream, a link would be automatically sent to the person's Twitter account, allowing their followers to check out the streaming video. While the feature has proven crucial to Meerkat's meteoric rise in popularity, it has also been its Achilles' heel.

In March, Twitter announced the launch of its own live-streaming platform, called Periscope. Like Meerkat, the app automatically shares a live stream link with Twitter followers.

In the month or so that Periscope has been available, it's proven popular, according to Twitter. The company said on Wednesday during an earnings call that the live-streaming service had nabbed 1 million users within its first 10 days of availability.

Though it's unknown how Meerkat was affected by the Twitter launch, Twitter has a vested interest in seeing Periscope succeed and Meerkat fail, which could prove troublesome for the live-streaming startup in the coming months.

With Facebook integration, however, Meerkat is offloading its reliance on Twitter. While the service still publishes live streams to Twitter, having support from Facebook, the world's largest social network, could be the key feature that drives some growth. Better yet, it's unlikely, given that Periscope is owned by Twitter, that it will offer Facebook support anytime soon.

That point of differentiation -- support for Facebook -- is just the latest from Meerkat. Last week, the company announced the launch of its mobile app on the Google Play store. Although the app is still in beta and needs to have some kinks worked out, it brought the app to Android before Twitter delivered its Periscope to the Google platform, giving it a first-mover advantage to nab users and keep them put.

In addition to keeping users on its service, Meerkat is looking to promote some of the more popular live feeds with a new feature it's calling "mobbing." When a stream hits a certain level of viewership, Meerkat will syndicate it to its official feed. The feature appears to be an attempt to surface more feeds to the public to draw in viewership, as well as help to promote popular streams.

Meerkat co-founder and CEO Ben Rubin said that a "mob" develops when users hit a certain level of concurrent viewers.

"For a Meerkat stream to mob it needs to pass 50 concurrent watchers and meet a certain criteria of people's engagement and retention within the stream," Rubin told CNET. "As long as the the stream meets this criteria -- it will keep mobbing."

The updated Meerkat app is available now as a free download in Apple's App Store.
