UK Games Deals: PlayStation 4, Witcher 3, Bloodborne for £319

UK supermarket chain Tesco has launched a new PlayStation 4 bundle that features the console, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Bloodborne for £319.

Alternatively, shoppers can opt for the PlayStation 4 console, The Witcher 3, and £25 PSN card for £319. A cheaper bundle with the console and The Witcher 3 for £299 is also available.

Although bundles featuring these exact games aren't currently available elsewhere, single-game PS4 bundles on Amazon UK, such as the Grand Theft Auto V and Batman: Arkham Knight bundles, are in the range of £350.

The PlayStation 4 console on its own costs £303 on Amazon UK.

Sony has also started promoting a £279 bundle that features the console and The Witcher 3.

The two games on offer in Tesco's bundles have received critical acclaim for GameSpot.

In our Bloodborne review we said the game's "excellent action, beautiful artistry, and religious melodrama make it another must-play," awarding it a score of 9.

In our Witcher 3: Wild Hunt review we awarded the game a 10 and said it's "one of the best games ever made."

The PlayStation 4 is the second-fastest selling console in the UK since hardware sales records began, having sold one million sales after 42 weeks of trading.

A year after its launch, we reviewed the PlayStation 4 to find out whether it's the new-gen system to buy.

PSN down intermittently — gamers experiencing Internet issues on PlayStation consoles

You may have trouble getting your Destiny raid in tonight.

Sony’s PlayStation Network is experiencing an outage. Gamers have taken to social media to complain they cannot get online with their PlayStation 4 or other Sony systems. This is preventing them from playing multiplayer online games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Destiny, but is also causing issues for some trying to connect primarily single-player games like Bloodborne to third-party servers.

We’ve asked Sony for a comment about what is causing the issue, and we’ll update this story with any new information. Sony also just updated its status website, which says “you may be experiencing issues related to signing in or creating an account on PlayStation Network.”

Sony has confirmed that the PSN Store, PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Now, and all social features are not working.

PlayStation Network outages often make gamers nervous. We’re only a few months removed from a major period where PSN was down for approximately five days at the end of Christmas. That was the result of a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) by a group of cyberattackers known as Lizard Squad, which also knocked Microsoft’s Xbox Live for around 24 hours.

Well, the bad news is that a new group calling itself Lizard Squad started taking credit for the PSN outage almost exactly the moment that the first people started complaining about it. In fact, it tweeted that it was attacking the PSN servers a minute before DownDetector posted that hundreds of people were having issues.

Smartphones from Xiaomi, Micromax pressure established manufacturers

Smartphone manufacturers Micromax in India and Xiaomi in China have given the low-end segment a shake up with their latest products, and even if the devices don't go on sale around the world, their launches will likely be felt globally.

The impressive specs and aggressive pricing of the Micromax Yu Yuphoria and the Xiaomi Mi 4i will put pressure on phone makers Samsung Electronics and Motorola Mobility to step up their efforts in the segment for sub-$200 smartphones.

"It's more pain for the established vendors. These devices have the potential to reset customer expectations," said Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight.

The Yu Yuphoria was launched on Tuesday in India. It's an LTE smartphone that will cost about $110 without a contract in that country. It has a 5-inch, 720 x 1280 pixel screen and a Snapdragon 410 processor. The specifications also include an 8-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel front camera, as well as 2GB of RAM and 16GB of integrated storage. While smartphones in this price category used to look as cheap as they were, the Yuphoria has a metal frame to help it look more premium.

The Xiaomi Mi 4i is more expensive at just above $200, but offers better specs. The 5-inch screen has a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and the processor is Qualcomm's more powerful Snapdragon 615. The main camera has a 13-megapixel resolution. It, too, has a 5-megapixel front camera, LTE, 16GB of integrated storage and 2GB of RAM.

The two devices share another common feature: They leave competing devices in the dust by offering smartphone buyers more bang for their buck.

The second-generation Moto G from Motorola may have a 5-inch, 720 x 1280 pixel screen and an 8-megapixel camera just like the Yuphoria. But the front camera only has a 2-megapixel resolution, the amount of storage and RAM is half of what the Yuphoria has, and the price tag is still $170. There is also an LTE version available in some parts of the world that makes the price difference even larger.

Samsung's midrange smartphones also come off looking expensive in comparison. The Galaxy A5 is like the Mi 4i, an LTE smartphone with a 13-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage and 2GB of RAM. But it has the less powerful Snapdragon 410 under the hood and the 5-inch screen isn't full HD. Instead, users have to make do with 720 x 1280 pixels and still pay about $350.

Even if the newcomers offer great specs for little money, Samsung and Motorola think they have an edge.

"They hope they'll be able to command a premium for their brand, but that margin is being eroded all the time," Wood said.

The Yu Yuphoria and the Mi 4i are unlikely to go on sale in the U.S. and Europe, because Micromax and Xiaomi continue to focus on their respective home markets, along with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Russia for Micromax, and India, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia for Xiaomi.

However, the repercussions will likely result in better products that will go on sale globally. Samsung is dependent on this segment of the market to keep its volumes up, so the company must come up with a competitive response, according to Wood. And Samsung sells its products in as many markets as it possibly can. With the exception of the second generation Moto G with LTE, Motorola has also shipped its affordable smartphones all over the world.

There are several reasons for the ascent of Micromax and Xiaomi. The biggest one is arguably that developing smartphones has become much easier, and companies no longer need a big research and development department.

"Virtually all phones are manufactured in China or Taiwan, and the ecosystem there is so ripe that everyone gets access to the same components and materials," Sanjay Kapoor, chairman at Micromax, said in an interview earlier this year. "So if you manage your overheads right, you can build world-class products."

Best smartphones 2015: the top mobile phones on the market

The Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S6 are among the hotly anticipated new smartphones for 2015 but, for now, there is still a large range of top mobiles available to buy. Here are five of the most popular among tech critics:

Sony Xperia Z3

Another updated version of Sony's flagship Xperia smartphone, the Z3 offers up to 890 hours of battery life despite its new slimmer design. Chris Hall at Pocket Lint gives the waterproof phone five stars, praising its design, power, 5.2-inch display and camera. "If you're looking for a big-screen device that's easy to manage then the Sony Xperia Z3 has it all," says Hall. "It's a compelling flagship set to rival any of the top handsets currently out there." The Xperia Z3 Compact version, with its 4.6in display, has also been held up by critics as "the best 'small' screen Android phone around".

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The large 5.7-inch screen, S Pen stylus and expensive price-tag might not be for everyone, says John McCann at CNET, but the Note 4's power, display and great camera make it an "excellent smartphone". McCann says it is "the best phablet around", with a "fantastic" QHD resolution screen that makes everything "pin sharp". He adds: "Your eyes alone will thank you for picking up the Galaxy Note 4, and those of you who love gaming and watching movies on your phone, it's perfect."

Apple iPhone 6

A record four million pre-orders were placed for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in just 24 hours last September – and, according to Madeline Bennett at V3, the handsets do live up to the hype. "Featuring a powerful A8 processor, sleek metal design and stunning Retina display, the iPhone 6 is one of a select few handsets to earn V3's hallowed five stars," she says. The iPhone 6 Plus is even larger with a 5.5in display and longer battery life.

LG G3

Chris Martin at PC Advisor claims the LG G3 was the best smartphone of 2014. No other phone has outdone its "amazing" Quad HD screen, he says. The phone also has a camera with a laser auto focus and the ability to record 4K-resolution video. "The device is surprisingly small considering the 5.5in display and we like the more premium design," says Martin. "It's another winner from LG."

HTC One M9

Before the launch, HTC knew it really had to get the One M9 right. The new phone was said to be "critically important" for the Taiwanese firm, which is trying to halt three years of falling sales. Fortunately for the company, the new device received enormously positive reviews when it was unveiled at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Tech Radar declared the M9 to be a "great phone if you're upgrading from two years ago", but said that overall the handset still isn't quite as good as the latest flagship phones from Samsung and Apple. Nevertheless, critics praised the phone's "significantly improved" 20-megapixel camera, its high-quality Boomsound speakers (Trusted Reviews declared them to be "the best speakers you can find on a phone"), its speedy processor and stylish design.

Coming soon: the LG G4

There is some confusion about its May release date, the LG G4 is set to improve on the aesthetics of previous LG offerings with an eye-catching orange leather fascia. TechRadar has warm praise for the phone, saying the "LG G4 focuses on what everyone actually wants out of a smartphone". Stuff magazine's reviewer is also a fan. "The camera is top notch, the screen brilliant and those extra 0.4 inches of screen space [compared with its predecessor, the G3] will be enough to convince a bunch of buyers," the review say. While CNET has reservations about battery life and a lack of new features, it to is happy to recommend the phone. "Though it feels too similar to last year's G3, the LG G4 is an excellent big-screen smartphone that will appeal to budding photographers, and has old-school features missing from rival flagships."

Xbox One Bests PlayStation 4 in April US Hardware Sales

This eighth generation of home video game consoles has proven to be an interesting one, as there has been a clear cut hardware winner from the very get-go, and it wasn’t Nintendo.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has absolutely dominated, staying at a nearly two-to-one ratio of the second place competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox One, worldwide. The United States is usually the proving grounds for a new console in terms of determining its overall appeal, and last month the Americans showed us that the Xbox was the winner. We’re not entirely sure what it was that drove the sales up so much for the big, black, vented rectangle in the land of the free and the home of the brave, but we’ll see if that starts any sort of a continuing trend beyond the nation’s borders.

Overall, the industry saw year-on-year growth in both hardware and software sales all around, so I guess one could consider that a win for everybody in the video games business, despite your console affiliation.

Oh, and have you tried Mortal Kombat X yet? It was the top-selling title in April, and there’s good reason why. It’s a fantastic title. Some say it’s the best Mortal Kombat ever. And that’s saying a lot.

America’s supply of IP addresses is about to run out

But this does not mean the end for the Internet.

North America is forecasted to run out of IPv4 addresses this summer.

The American Registry for Internet Numbers said it has about 3.4 million available addresses left – which sounds like a lot, but at the current pace they’re being purchased the supply could run out this summer.

An IP address is like a telephone number for the internet, The Wall Street Journal explains.

There are only 4.3 billion possible addresses in IPv4, but newer protocol IPv6 is practically unlimited, as it allows up to 340 undecilion addresses-340 followed by 36 zeroes. An IP address is a short series of numbers with three dots between it, like 194.66.82.11. Back then, the engineers figured they had created enough to cover the entire Internet, but it clearly isn’t so.

Facebook is perhaps one of the most famous companies to have on-boarded most of its network to IPv6, but making that move has been somewhat of a hard sell to other companies. Every few months an analyst warns of the coming storm for enterprises as the number of web addresses on the IPv4 standard nears exhaustion. Specifically, it covers up to 340 undecillion addresses.

The next version, IPv6, provides a wider pool of IP addresses (in the trillions), but many organizations have been slow to make the switch.

There are some companies, though, who have already begun preparing for the new age. Although you probably won’t have to worry about your personal internet connections and favorite sites, there’s a chance that some of the smaller services you use will have to shell out a lot of cash to maintain business as usual. Research firm Gartner says migrating to IPv6 can cost 7 percent of the entire IT budget, making it more attractive to pick up IP addresses while they’re cheap for the time being.

Microsoft Windows 10 to come in Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise and Education editions

Microsoft is all set to launch Windows 10 in the next couple of months in around 190 countries in 111 languages, although no fixed date has been announced yet. There will be various editions of Windows 10 according to the use cases. The editions announced include Windows 10 Home, Mobile, Pro, Enterprise, Mobile Enterprise, Education. Let us take a look at each of these editions.

Windows 10 Home edition will be the consumer facing edition which will be seen on most desktop PCs, laptops and 2-in-1s. The Home edition will support voice-assistant Cortana, Windows Edge web browser as well as Windows Hello face recognition, iris scanner and fingerprint login for various Windows apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video.

For the business users, you have the Windows 10 Pro edition, which has all the features of the Home edition plus additional features such as device management, security features, cloud features ideal for smaller businesses. For medium and large size organisations there is Windows 10 Enterprise edition which builds up upon the Windows 10 Pro. Apart from providing security features, Windows 10 Enterprise also has a broad range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management.

On the mobile front, you get Windows 10 Mobile edition which is the new name for Windows Phone OS and the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise edition. As the name implies, Windows 10 Mobile is meant for use on mobile phones, tablets and other touch-centric devices. It will support Windows Universal apps which are there on Windows 10 Home edition along with a touch-optimised version of Office. Windows 10 Mobile will also offer Continuum for phone which will let users use multiple devices seamlessly. Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is the mobile arm of the Windows 10 Enterprise edition. Just like the desktop version, the Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will also incorporate the latest security and innovation features on the mobile devices.

Windows 10 Education is a new edition which builds upon Windows 10 Enterprise and is designed for use in schools among staff, administrators, teachers and students. “This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing, and there will be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education,” mentions the Windows Blog.

“Because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses,” said Tony Prophet on the Windows Blog.

Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro will be available as a free upgrade, for the first year, for existing genuine users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. There are no pricing plans announced for use after one year.

Apple Loop: iPhone 6S Feature List, Android Overtakes Apple, Apple Watch Issues

Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop looks at the feature list for the iPhone 6S, iOS 8.4 and Beats, fifteen Apple Watch issues, smartwatch sales projections, security issues over the Apple Watch, mobile advertising breakdowns, the autonomous Lily drone, App Store listing tips, and should Apple buy Greece?

Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read our weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).

Eleven New Features For The iPhone 6S

It might not be announced until September, but details of the iPhone 6S are going to become known as it moves through the external design and manufacturing process. Kicking off the first big tranche of information, Forbes’ Gordon Kelly rounds up the information from KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo:

The Talking Point - Force Touch is what will likely prove to be the key selling point of the 6S models. Having introduced it on the Apple Watch and 13-inch MacBook Pro it makes perfect sense for Apple to extend this to the iPhone (and eventually the iPad).

How Apple does this will be crucial. The Apple Watch isn’t immediately intuitive and iPhones already have gesture, swipe and long press commands. Adding another must be done right.

For the eleven bullet points, head on over to his full post.

Beats Still Missing Action With Latest iOS 8.4 Beta

With the ninth updated to iOS (in seven months) being prepared – presumably for WWDC – there are more signs of the integration of Beats software into Apple’s mobile OS. Beta 3 of iOS 8.4 was released yesterday, and Gordon Kelly tries to track down the musical streaming service that is still missing in action:

For a long time iOS 8.3 was rumoured to include the long awaited Spotify rival, but having drifted to iOS 8.4 it is surprising that no test features or even code have given away its existence.

There is still time the Beats streaming service to be dropped in there (Apple typically tends to do four to five iOS betas before official release) or for it to arrive via a dedicated event, but the lack of any telltale signs at this stage is surprising.

Given WWDC is developer focused, Beats might be a better bet for September’s new iPhone launch event – and this would leave more time to negotiate ether deals with the music industry.

15 Issues With The Apple Watch Resolved?

As the Apple Watch was launched, 9to5Mac’s Jeremy Horowitz highlighted fifteen issues with Tim Cook’s wearable. One month later, were these issues addressed, were they real concerns, or has time with the watch proved them to be early adopter’s planting some tall poppies? Horowitz returns to his list:

Several reviewers flagged the Watch’s auto-on/auto-off screen as an annoyance for various reasons, primarily its tendency to not actually turn on whenever desired. While the complaints were valid — including ones that the screen turns off too quickly when in the midst of use — the problem is not as pronounced as the worst howls suggested. The feature works most of the time, and when it doesn’t, a tap on the screen turns it on.

Solution: Hopefully, a software update will make the accelerometer a little more generous in recognizing “wrist up” motions, and the OS a little less willing to shut the screen off mid-use. Until then, a quick tap on the screen will suffice.

Nineteen Million Apple Watches In 2015

IHS Technologies has been looking at the smartwatch market, and while the headline number for projected smartphone sales in 2020 is a nice 1010 million, I’m more interested in its prediction for sales of the Apple Watch this year… around 19 million. Forbes’ Paul Lamkin:

IHS’ forecasts are based on Apple shifting around 19 million of its just-launched smartwatches this year; resulting in an estimated 56% of the market share.

That’s a pretty conservative prediction as, back in November, Morgan Stanley forecast 30 million Apple Watch sales in 2015. “Our 30m unit estimate implies 10% penetration into Apple’s 315m iPhone 5 or newer installed base exiting 2014, which is lower than iPad penetration of 14% in its first year but higher than iPhone at 7%,” it said.

Back to the IHS forecast and it’s stating, by 2020, the Cupertino tech giant’s share of the market would have shrunk to 38%, with 96 million Android Wear shipments helping Google to a 22% piece of the wearable pie. That leaves 40% of non-Apple or Google smartwatches – with the likes of Pebble, Microsoft and even Samsung, with its own Tizen software, potentially playing catch-up.

The big unknown in all of these numbers is just how the public will take to the smartwatch – the geekerati love the computer on the wrist but that’s not enough users to build a sustainable and profitable market.

Iron Man Galaxy S6 Edge Is Coming From Samsung

Samsung will soon roll out a new phone based on the look of Iron Man, Tech Crunch has reports.

An Avengers: Age of Ultron-branded Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge will be coming soon -- in limited quantities -- Samsung announced via Twitter.

There's no official imagery of the actual phone yet, but it's long been rumored so there are images online created by fans to speculate what it might look like. Odds are, the Iron Man model will be red and gold and, because he's the most wildly successful character at the box office, its success will determine whether it might be worth making others down the road.
