Large Google Algorithm & Search Result Changes: Possible Update Or Testing?

I know, we just covered huge chatter around a Google update last Friday but there is no doubt in my mind, Google is testing algorithms maybe around Panda or Penguin or the doorway algorithm is being released or maybe a whole new beast.
This morning the WebmasterWorld thread started heating up again. Plus I received emails, social media mentions and more around major changes in the Google search results. Here are some quotes from the thread:

Definitely movement here and not for the good. Another 3-4 spots lost on all main keywords.
Today I see penguin related movement.

Today I see movement (further shuffling similar to yesterday). Why do you think it is Penguin-related?

Lots of SERP movements in Google Australia, seeing a lot of new sites showing up on page 1 for root keyword searches but not city based (ie: keyword sydney), not much changes there. Most of the fluctuations are from money keywords or root keywords search results. That's my observation so far.
One of the tracking tools said on Google+ that they saw the largest shift in a long time:
We've recorded a sudden jump in SERP flux today. Volatility was above 2 roos which is the most turbulent day since the mystery update on the 5th of February.

The only tools that were updated this morning so far were SERP Metrics, Algoroo and Advanced Web Ranking and they all show more activity in changes in the Google search results compared to the norm. Mozcast and SERPs.com should update soon. Update, Mozcast is also showing major volatility in the search results at Google.
Either way, I think Google has been heavily testing something but I am not sure if today is the day it is released or not.Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.

YouTube Live-Streaming Platform to Relaunch With Gaming Focus: Report

Google is reportedly preparing to relaunch YouTube's live-streaming platform, YouTube Live, this time focusing on 'live gaming and e-sports'. The search giant is said to be looking at this segment based on the popularity of Twitch, which it reportedly tried to acquire last year.
According to a Daily Dot report, which cites sources within the streaming industry, YouTube has already begun recruiting a team for its renewed push into the live-streaming space, and has hired about 50 engineers with expertise in the streaming industry.

"Gaming and e-sports in particular are going to be a big driving force for the new-look YouTube Live," one source told Daily Dot. "There'll be huge opportunities for established streamers and organizations soon and I would say that the record numbers of e-sports viewers are only going to grow when Google start promoting and partnering with these events."

While YouTube didn't comment on the report, the Daily Dot suggests that the company will likely make an official announcement at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the annual gaming trade show which is scheduled for June 16 to June 18 this year.

YouTube had started live-streaming cricket matches back in 2010 with IPL 3 (Indian Premier League 3), but that didn't gain too much of traction. Since 2013, YouTube has also been broadcasting e-sports any exclusive deals such as the League of Legends Championship Series, but this too is said to be more popularly viewed on Twitch and even smaller rivals, such as Azubu. In early 2014, the report notes Google also removed any mention of live events from its homepage.

In July 2014, Google had reportedly agreed to buy game live-streaming service Twitch for $1 billion. The YouTube team was said to be handling the acquisition, but the deal eventually didn't materialise, with antitrust concerns thought to be one of the reasons. Ultimately, as you probably recall, Amazon bought Twitch for $970 million in August.

Since roughly the same time last year, Twitch has been making several changes to its policies - including those for video-on-demand, and third-party audio usage. While the latter certainly would have helped with legal issues ahead of the acquisition, the new storage limits for broadcasts saw many users rise up in arms, and make their way to rival platforms such as YouTube.

PlayStation 4 v2.50 System Update 'Yukimura' to Release Thursday

Earlier this month it was known that Sony is planning a major update for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) console. The v2.50 system software update, codenamed Yukimura, will finally hit the console on Thursday.

The PS4 System Software 2.50 'Yukimara' update sports a colossal list of upgrades, as per the list of changes on Sony's blog.

These include backing up your game data to an external hard drive, and the much-awaited suspend/ resume feature which lets you continue your game instantaneously, similar to the Xbox One, will be present.

Other changes include new friend features (from the addition of a 'Facebook friend finder', improved friend requests, a more streamlined Party process, new 'Friends Who Play This' section, to the joining friends in-game directly from the news feed), new Trophy features (automatic Trophy screenshots, posting of Trophy information via the Share button, new Trophy filters), improved and expanded accessibility options (including DualShock 4 button remapping, zoom for displayed pictures, inverted colours for all system functions, text-to-speech and enlarged text for all GUI, and more).

Finally, the PS4 v2.5 system software update also brings 60fps support for Remote Play and Share Play, automatic installation option for system software updates, sub-account upgrades, new verified accounts for developers and community managers, and Dailymotion integration for sharing.

But this isn't all, the PS Vita and the PS App for smartphones and tablets is receiving an update as well to play nice with your PS4.

"PlayStation Vita and PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets will also receive system software updates tonight, adding complementary features to those added to PS4. PS Vita update version 3.50 and PlayStation App update version 2.50 will add new accessibility options, including enlarged text, increased contrast and more. This update also enables PS Vita to support 60fps streaming for Remote Play," said John Koller VP of Platforms Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

While most PS4 updates had focused on adding "stability", this is a welcome change of pace. However like most firmware updates, we would suggest waiting a day or two before downloading it as you may run the risk of bricking your PS4.

Motorola Moto Turbo Review: Smartphone Powerhouse Redefined

If there is one smartphone company that has made a great comeback after facing near-total defeat, it has to be Motorola. The brand has come a long way since it reinvented itself with the Moto X (Review | Pictures) in the second half of 2013.

In India, Motorola now has models that cater to every budget. Are you looking for a budget smartphone? You have the stellar Moto E (Gen 2) [Review | Pictures]. Do you want a phone that costs no more than Rs. 15,000 yet offers stellar performance? Look no further than the Moto G (Gen 2) [Review | Pictures]. Do you want a premium smartphone that costs less than most flagships in the market today? The Moto X (Gen 2) [Review | Pictures] fits the bill perfectly.

With the launch of the Motorola Moto Turbo, the company has gone one step further than the Moto X (Gen 2) and created a smartphone that boasts of a stellar set of specifications. It also uses an interesting new material in its build. We are more than intrigued by what Motorola has on offer. Let's get down to brass tacks.

Look and feel

It feels as though companies have given up on trying to improve the candybar design of smartphones, so we really appreciate those that introduce some sort of distinction - like Motorola, and its parent company Lenovo. The company introduced its Moto Maker customisation tool with the Moto X, and later took it to another level when it announced the Moto X (Gen 2). Unfortunately, the tool never made it to India. Even so, the rate at which Motorola has been coming up with innovative materials, designs and textures on its smartphones is worthy of applause. From the distinctive chin on the original Moto X to the bamboo back of the Moto X (Gen 2), Motorola has managed to distinguish itself.

With the Moto Turbo, Motorola introduces a new material - ballistic nylon - which is essentially a thicker, tougher variant of synthetic nylon. Quick trivia: ballistic nylon was used in the flak jackets worn by World War II soldiers. The criss-cross black thread runs across the rear of the phone, which looks elegant to say the least. The trademark dimple with the Motorola logo has been replaced by a metal plate on the Moto Turbo. The primary camera is above this metal plate, flanked by two LED flash modules.

The front of the device is quite ordinary, at least when compared to the design of the rear. A metal frame runs around the edges of the screen and the phone has a small chin on the lower front. Below the screen, Motorola has used capacitive buttons, which is odd considering most of its other phones use on-screen buttons. Considering this phone runs Android Lollipop, the KitKat-style icons look out-of-place. A single slit of a speaker curves across the plastic above the display, with a front-facing camera in between. The Micro-USB port can be found on the bottom of the phone whereas the 3.5mm audio jack is on the top.

Thanks to its large battery, the phone is a fairly thick 11.2mm. Moreover, the weight of 166g is on the heavier side when compared to other flagship smartphones. Thankfully, the sides of the phone are only 8.3mm thick and it slopes gently to its thickest point. This makes handling the phone that much easier, though we still think that the smaller bezels on the Moto X (Gen 2) are more ergonomic.

The volume rocker and the power button are both on the right edge of the phone. Interestingly, the Nano-SIM tray is attached to the volume rocker using a mechanism with springs. At first, this seems like an ingenious piece of design but in case a user fidgets too much and damages the tray, the SIM card and volume controls will both be lost.

Just like the Moto X (Gen 2), the Moto Turbo sports a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED screen with Corning's Gorilla Glass 3 for protection from scratches. The only difference here is the Moto Turbo has a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (QHD), which translates to a whopping pixel density of 565ppi. This is one of the crispest screens we've seen on a phone, and spotting pixels is impossible. Being an AMOLED screen, the colours do tend to pop but not as much as the screen on the Moto X (Gen 2). Also, there is a weird yellow cast which is visible when viewed from an angle. We noticed that the screen doesn't get as bright as we'd have liked it to get, but thankfully the sunlight legibility is not affected. Motorola also adds a unique water-repellant nano-coating to the Moto Turbo which can protect it from liquid spills.

Specifications and software

Quite expectedly, Motorola has gone with premium components inside the Moto Turbo. It rocks a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 SoC with a quad-core processor clocked at 2.7GHz and an Adreno 420 GPU. There is an ample 3GB of RAM, and Motorola has launched the phone with 64GB of internal storage, which should be enough for most practical purposes. In any case, there is no microSD card slot to increase storage capacity.

A $60 Gadget That Makes Car Hacking Far Easier

THE AVERAGE AUTOMOBILE today isn’t necessarily secured against hackers, so much as obscured from them: Digitally controlling a car’s electronics remains an arcane, specialized skill among security researchers. But that’s changing fast. And soon, it could take as little as $60 and a laptop to begin messing around with a car’s digital innards.

Tomorrow at the Black Hat Asia security conference in Singapore, 24-year-old Eric Evenchick plans to present a new device he calls the CANtact. The open source board, which he hopes to sell for between $60 and $100, connects on one end to a computer’s USB port, and on the other to a car or truck’s OBD2 port, a network port under its dashboard. That makes the CANtact a cheap interface between any PC and a vehicle’s controller area network or CAN bus, the collection of connected computers inside of every modern automobile that control everything from its windows to its brakes.

With just that go-between gadget and the open source software that Evenchick is releasing for free, he hopes to make car hacking a far cheaper and more automated process for amateurs. “I realized that there were no good tools for me to play around with this stuff outside of what the auto industry uses, and those are incredibly expensive,” Evenchick says, referring to products sold by companies like Vector that can cost tens of thousands of dollars. “I wanted to build a tool I can get out there, along with software to show that this stuff isn’t terribly complicated.”

Over the last several years, researchers have shown that car hacking represents a real security threat. In 2013, for instance, Darpa-funded security researchers Chris Valasek and Charlie Miller showed (with me as their chosen crash-test dummy) that it was possible to send digital commands from a laptop connected to a car’s CAN bus that affected steering, slammed on brakes, or even disabled brakes at some speeds.
Evenchick’s gadget aims to make exactly that sort of testing more accessible to researchers. In their tests, Valasek and Miller used a $150 ECOM cable that they rewired by hand to connect to their test vehicles’ OBD2 ports. (Valasek says a stock cable capable of that connection would have cost $1,200.) Evenchick’s CANtact is designed to make that connection out of the box at a much lower cost.

The average coder isn’t familiar with the protocol most cars’ computers rely on to communicate. But Evenchick has written open source software for CANtact that automates much of the manual work of CAN bus hacking. Like the earlier work by Valasek and Miller, the CANtact is designed to send commands in Unified Diagnostics Services, the CAN protocol that auto mechanics use to communicate with electronic control units (or ECUs) throughout a vehicle.

That allows anyone to write python scripts that can automatically trigger commands in a car’s digital network that range from turning off its “check engine” light to automatically pumping its brakes. “Most people have no idea there’s all this diagnostic stuff that someone who’s connected to the CAN bus can use to do all these interesting things,” says Evenchick. “What are the extent of those features? And what implementation problems exist that could be big security holes?”

For now, actually figuring out what a certain UDS command sent from the CANtact might do in a specific vehicle will largely be a matter of trial and error for amateur car hackers, says Evenchick. But by publishing its software on Github, he hopes the code will become a collection of different hackers’ techniques that target individual vehicle makes and models.

“It would be awesome if people messing around with their cars… could work together to build a library [of code] to do all this stuff,” says Evenchick. “You’re a Honda owner, and someone else is a Honda owner. If they find some cool things to do and you want to play around with it too, they can share it.”

The CANtact, of course, can only test security exploits that require physical access, not remote attacks. But the device does help to automate the testing of security exploits that would be possible once a hacker has already gained a wireless foothold on a car’s network. And the notion of a hacker gaining that sort of initial wireless foothold in a car’s network is more than theoretical. Researchers at the University of Washington and the University of California at San Diego demonstrated in 2011 that they could gain access to an unnamed car’s network through wireless attacks that included a Bluetooth connection, the car’s OnStar-like cellular radio, and even Android malware on the driver’s phone.

Evenchick says his CANtact gadget isn’t intended to make any sort of malicious car hacking easier. Instead, he argues, it’s meant to foster hobbyist car hacking and security research that can expose and help fix real vulnerabilities in the digital components of cars and trucks. Miller and Valasek’s earlier research, for example, served as a public demonstration that cars’ internal networks lack basic security protections.

Their work led to Senator Edward Markey sending a series of questions to 20 automakers that eventually revealed widespread inattention to security and in some cases a potential lack of anti-hacking measures in their cars and trucks. Only seven of the companies said they used third party security auditing for their vehicles, and only two said they currently had features to respond to a hacker intrusion on their vehicles’ CAN buses.

The more attention and testing those car systems receive, Evenchick says, the more secure they’ll eventually become. “You don’t really own a device until you can open it up and tear it apart,” says Evenchick. “Your car is more connected than ever before. Just having people know what’s going on with cars and understand them better would be kind of nice.”

Google Launches Major Push To Get Local Businesses Online, Improve Data

New site offers tools, content and solicits business owners to update information

Google is introducing a program it’s calling Let’s Put Our Cities on the Map. This new portal (Get Your Business Online) is not unlike Facebook’s Blueprint and Learn How sites launched this week. It offers resources to business owners (and potential partners) to help them get online or correct and complete their online presences.

Each user who visits will see a localized version of the site (based on IP detection). In addition to various FAQs, videos and other information, Google invites business owners to search for themselves and then tells them whether their listings are present and complete. If “incomplete” it asks businesses to update their information.

For those not online at all, Google is also offering a free domain and hosted website (for one year) through Startlogic.

Consistent with its AdWords reseller strategy Google is also trying to reach out to local chambers of commerce and other organizations locally to assist in the effort of getting business data into Google:

We’re also forming partnerships with local organizations—like chambers and small business development centers—and equipping them with free trainings and customized city materials to run workshops just like the one Marieshia attended in Garland. These local partners know the challenges for local businesses more than anyone—and they recognize the value of getting businesses online.

Getting and maintaining accurate local business data is veritable trench warfare. If you want to know the nuances and challenges of local digital presence management, come to the Local Search Advantage Workshop in Seattle right after our SMX Advanced search conference.

Google Clarifies The Mobile-Friendly Algorithm Will Roll Out Over A Week, Be A Yes/No Response & More

As we approach the April 21st date of the release of Google's mobile-friendly algorithm, we uncover more SEO facts about what to expect around the algorithm.

Google’s mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that is launching on April 21st will be on a page-by-page and real-time basis but how long will it take to roll out and how do you know if your page qualifies to benefit from it?

Since we know this algorithm will be significantly larger in impact compared to the Panda and Penguin algorithms, webmasters are kind of anxious about the release.

Yesterday, Google answered a series of questions in a Google+ hangout on the topic of this new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm. The three things we learned were:

(1) The algorithm will start rolling out on April 21st and will take a few days to a week to completely and globally.

(2) You are either mobile-friendly or not, there are no degrees of mobile-friendliness in this algorithm.

(3) The fastest way to see if your web pages are mobile-friendly is to see if you have the mobile-friendly label in the live mobile search results now. If not, check the mobile-friendly testing tool, which should match the live Google search results, whereas the mobile usability reports in Google Webmaster Tools can be delayed based on crawl time.

Roll Out Will Be A Few Days To A Week

I transcribed Google’s Mary response on this where she said:

We are expecting it (the mobile friendly algorithm) to roll out on April 21st, we don’t have a set time period because it is going to take a couple of days to roll out. Maybe even a week or so.

Your Page Is Mobile-Friendly Or Not

The mobile-friendly algorithm is an on or off algorithm, on a page-by-page basis, but it is not about how mobile-friendly your pages are, it is simply are you mobile-friendly or not. I transcribed this one also:

As we mentioned in this particular change, you either have a mobile friendly page or not. It is based on the criteria we mentioned earlier, which are small font sizes, your tap targets/links to your buttons are too close together, readable content and your viewpoint. So if you have all of those and your site is mobile friendly then you benefit from the ranking change.

But as we mentioned earlier, there are over 200 different factors that determine ranking so we can’t just give you a yes or no answer with this. It depends on all the other attributes of your site, weather it is providing a great user experience or not. That is the same with desktop search, not isolated with mobile search.

How Do You Know You Are Mobile-Friendly

How do you know if your web pages will be mobile-friendly or not? There are a few ways, but Google said the easiest way is to see if your current pages have the mobile-friendly label in the live mobile search results now. If so, the mobile-friendly testing tool should also confirm this. Keep in mind, the a href=”http://searchengineland.com/mobile-usability-reports-come-google-webmaster-tools-206885″>mobile usability reports in Webmaster Tools can be delayed by crawl time and general webmaster tools reporting delays.

Take out your phone, look up your web site. See if there is a gray mobile friendly label in your description snippet. If it is in the search results, if you see it, that means that Google understands that your site is mobile friendly and if you don’t see it then we don’t see that your site is mobile friendly or your is not mobile friendly.

Help! My Penalty Was Lifted, But Traffic Has Not Increased

After receiving this message, I’m sure that many of you watched your analytics like a hawk, waiting anxiously for that moment when there was evidence that traffic was starting to improve. In some cases, we can see a dramatic increase in traffic:
sitewide-penalty-lifted

Did Your Manual Penalty Disappear? It Probably Expired
However, if you received a partial match manual action, it’s possible that you did not see a dramatic improvement after your penalty was lifted. In fact, many sites that receive a partial action start seeing traffic and rankings decline shortly after the penalty is administrated and never seem to be able to recover.

What I am going to discuss in this article are several possible reasons why your site has not recovered after getting a manual action lifted. I have reviewed a good number of sites that have had trouble ranking again after getting a penalty lifted. I’ll share my experiences by placing these sites into three possible categories:

Sites that have very little chance of recovery.
Sites that need to do more work or wait longer before recovering.
Sites that may be a victim of a flawed Google algorithm.

1. Sites That Have Very Little Chance of Recovery

It wasn’t that long ago that anyone could rank a site well, provided you could get enough links to the site. If you wanted to outrank Amazon for "buy green widgets," in many cases you could purchase buygreenwidgets.com and with a little SEO spam magic, the site would rank well.

I may have oversimplified things in my example, but my point is that there are some sites that only used to rank because of the power of links that are no longer helping the site in any way. If you’re trying to rank in a competitive vertical, then there is a possibility that you may not see any further recovery once your manual action is lifted, especially if your only reason for ranking previously was because of link spamming.

Sometimes what seems like a non-recovery may just be "normal ranking." I have had several small business owners tell me that for years they ranked in the top five. Then they hired an SEO, got penalized, and are now stuck on the bottom of page two. You would think that the site would be able to bounce back to decent rankings once the penalty is lifted, especially because they were able to rank relatively well even before they started building links. It’s important to note, however, that Google’s algorithms have changed dramatically over the last few years. It is possible that that page two ranking is actually the ranking that your site currently deserves, even after the penalty is removed.

2. Sites That Need to Do More Work or Wait Longer Before Recovering

A really common reason for sites to not rank well after receiving a penalty is that something else is holding the site back. Many sites that get dealt a manual unnatural links penalty will also be dealing with Google’s Penguin algorithm. In order to get the manual penalty lifted, you have probably done the majority of the work that you need to do in order to escape Penguin. However, you’ll need to wait for Google to recrawl the links in your disavow file, which can take several months, AND you’ll need to wait for Google to rerun the Penguin algorithm before you get rid of this filter that is holding your site down.

There are also some sites that will need to do even more disavow work in order to escape from Penguin. Even if you have worked hard to clean up your unnatural links in order to get your manual penalty removed, you may need to do some monthly backlink auditing in order to find more links that could be hurting you in the eyes of Penguin. I do monthly backlink audits for several of my previous manual penalty clients and I am always amazed at how many new unnatural links will pop up each month. Many of these are old spam links that are just now turning up in the backlink checker tools and Webmaster Tools.

I believe that some are new links that are appearing because of automated processes that were set in place years ago with the intention of continually creating new links to a site. In some cases, new spammy directory links will continue to appear every month. These links often can come from unscrupulous site owners who create new directories with the intention of making money from people willing to pay for link removal. While I would like to think that Penguin is able to just ignore these links, I think it’s certainly possible that they can still negatively affect you. The only ways that I know of dealing with these are either to continually disavow them or to pay the ransom that they want in order to get the links removed. However, this ransom can often be very high. I prefer to just disavow.

It’s also possible that your site is dealing with another algorithmic issue such as Panda. In some cases, diagnosis of a Panda problem can be difficult. If traffic was suppressed by a manual penalty, then you may not be able to see on your analytics the dip in traffic that started because of a Panda hit. Panda can suppress a site in a similar way to Penguin. The only way to recover from this is to thoroughly clean up on-site quality issues. Panda goes so much deeper than duplicate and thin content. As such, if you’re struggling to recover after having a manual penalty removed, I would recommend having a site quality audit performed.

There are some sites that need to find ways to attract new links in order to improve rankings. If your site has very few natural links left once the unnatural links are removed or disavowed, then returning to high rankings could be difficult.

One final thing to consider is that it is possible that you have been too aggressive in your disavowing. I have seen several cases where a small business disavowed directory links that were likely good, valid citations. I’ve seen other cases where an SEO company disavowed anything that could possibly be remotely considered unnatural, in order to get rid of a manual penalty, but in the process, disavowed a lot of good links, too.

I have even seen cases where a penalty removal company disavowed every single link pointing to a site rather than taking the time to review each one and consider which links were good ones and which were bad. If this has happened to you, you can reavow links by submitting a new disavow file with those domains removed. However, reavowing can take some time as Google has built in a lag that is there to prevent spammers from being able to game the system.

3. Sites That May Be a Victim of a Flawed Google Algorithm

I’m going to start this section with a disclaimer. When discussing Google and ranking factors, I usually try to stick to things that are either known truths, or statements from trusted Google staff members. In the next few paragraphs I am going to be speculating somewhat. This speculation is based on my experiences over the last few years of almost exclusively dealing with penalized sites.

I feel that there is something wrong with Google’s Penguin algorithm and that this can be causing some sites with manual penalties to not be able to rank well. While I have seen many sites recover from Penguin, I have also seen a good number of sites that have removed a manual penalty but remain trapped by Penguin. The result is that they have not been able to increase their rankings even though they are doing everything correctly.

For some of our manual penalty clients, we have done full site quality audits, we have reviewed and disavowed links monthly, we have watched the business attract new good links, we have worked with companies to create and promote new fantastic content, and yet the site is still not ranking well. In many cases we have worked in conjunction with other professionals who are really, really knowledgeable in these areas.

I feel very confident that these sites are clean, good-quality sites with nice clean backlink profiles. Some of these cases are well-established, authoritative sites that are stuck on page six and beyond for keywords for which they definitely should be ranking. In many cases they are outranked by low-quality scraper sites and even completely unrelated sites. There is definitely still something holding these sites back.

John Mueller has said previously that a site that previously had a manual penalty will not have any sort of stigma attached to it, saying the following: "If you’ve had a manual action on your site and that’s revoked, then essentially, there’s no bad history attached to your site. It’s not harder to rank anymore. It’s not the case that you’ll never be able to rank for those terms – it’s just that this manual action is revoked and you’re kind of out in the open again." He has also said that if you feel that your site is being held back, that it’s possible that another algorithm that looks at links (i.e. Penguin) is still treating the site with distrust.

So why is it that I see so many sites that just can’t seem to gain traction after getting a manual penalty removed? Who knows? Perhaps we are missing something when it comes to finding on-site quality issues. Perhaps the links that the sites are gaining are not ones that Google wants to count as good links. I don’t think that this is the case, though. I truly think that something is still holding these sites back. And most likely, the issue is with Penguin.

Penguin measures the level of trust that Google has in your site in regards to webspam. I think that it’s possible that there are some parts of the Penguin algorithm that can still cause Google to distrust a site even if the discoverable unnatural links are cleaned up.

The last time that Google fully updated Penguin was in October of 2013. That is almost 18 months ago! We had a refresh of Penguin in October of 2014 and possibly even in late November, but we have not had a full update for a year and a half. (Here is more information on the differencebetween a refresh and an update). What this means is that it has been a long time since Google has changed the criteria that Penguin uses in order to determine the level of trust that Google has in your site. I think that it’s possible that some of those criteria need to be changed.

Perhaps Penguin is able to see and count links that are hidden deep in the Web and can’t be found by a webmaster in order to disavow. Perhaps Penguin needs to see a certain level of user engagement with a site in order to say that it is trustworthy. If this is the case, then it’s possible that users are not going to get much chance to engage with the site because it’s lost hiding on page six where no one ever sees it. Or maybe there’s something wrong with how the disavow tool works. I am completely speculating here, but my point is that I feel that some sites are not recovering because there is something wrong with Penguin that is making it difficult for them to escape.

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Googleplex and meet with several members of the webspam team. It was a fantastic visit and I felt that the team was genuinely interested in my concerns about Penguin. When we spoke about my frustrations concerning small businesses owners who were unable to gain any traction after dealing with a manual penalty, all of the team members gave what I interpreted as a sympathetic smile. I know that the prevailing sentiment is that Google does not care about small businesses. However, I really did get the sense that they are working on making things right when it comes to penalties and algorithm changes.

I do believe that the main reason why we haven’t seen an update to Penguin in so long is that Google is trying to accomplish something that is extremely difficult. They want to allow legitimate businesses to be able to recover and move on, but they don’t want to make it any easier for spammers to succeed. I do believe, though, that future iterations of Penguin will be more fair.

What Do I Do If I Haven’t Recovered After Having a Manual Penalty Removed?
Unfortunately no one can tell you with certainty whether you are going to see further recovery with your site. If you are struggling to gain rankings, then I would suggest the following:

Have someone review your disavow file to make sure that you haven’t missed unnatural links or disavowed too many good links.
Have someone who is experienced with doing on-site quality audits review your site to see what can be improved.
Wait until Google finally updates Penguin. We have no idea when this will happen. It could be tomorrow. It could be a year from now.

Consider starting over. This is a tough decision to make, though. Starting over is not a simple process. I have written an article here that may help you in making this decision. And this articlediscusses some important things that you need to know if you do decide to start over.
I am predicting that the next Penguin update will allow many of these sites that have been trapped in low-ranking hell to recover. But, there is no guarantee.

Recovery after a manual penalty is definitely possible. We have seen it happen many times. But, if you have had your penalty removed and still seem to be suppressed in the rankings, you are not alone.

Google’s New Program Aims to Get Local Businesses Online

Google is trying to get local businesses in 30,000 cities worldwide online via a new program called "Let's Put Our Cities on the Map."

The initiative was designed to encourage small businesses, consumers, and local organizations to help complete a local business listing on Google. According to Google's own research, consumers are 38 percent more likely to visit and 29 percent more likely to consider purchasing from businesses with complete listings. However, not enough companies have set up a local business listing on a search engine, Google says.

The program provides each city with a custom website where local businesses can find how they appear on Google Maps and in search results. Take, New York City for example, where the owner of Ost Cafe can see what listing information they have missed on Maps.

Google will also provide local business owners with a step-by-step guide for getting online with Google My Business, and a free website and domain name for one year with Google's partner Startlogic.

Consumers can participate in the program by creating postcards to support their favorite local businesses, and further sharing the postcards on Google+, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. However, such sharing will not help local businesses rank higher in Google search results.

"Sharing the postcards won't make businesses appear higher in search, but will hopefully spur them to verify and start managing their business listing," a Google spokesperson tells Search Engine Watch.

The search giant has also partnered with local organizations like chambers of commerce and small business development centers to offer Google My Business workshops, where local businesses can learn to how to control the information listed about them on Google Search and Maps.

CLOSED HALO ONLINE BETA LAUNCHED IN RUSSIA

343 Industries announced today that there is a new Halo game, Halo Online, being beta tested in Russia. It is a project that they have been working on with Saber Interactive and Innova Systems. Halo Online is a free Halo multiplayer experience for PC users.

343 said that the game itself is powered by a “highly modified version of the Halo 3 engine” so that way it can be optimized to run on lower-end PCs without an issue. It is set on a UNSC space installation where Spartan-IV soldiers hone their skills by by training together in exercises using experimental technology. They also said that they will be reviewing feedback from the Russian beta testers to continually tweak the gameplay, features, and in-game economy.

I’d be interested in seeing if, because of it being the Halo 3 engine, they will be using projectiles as opposed to hitscan for the weapons. One of the things that made Halo 3 such a difficult game for everyone to be amazing at was the lack of hitscan; basically the bullets lack travel time. Having projectiles meant you had to lead your shots differently at various distances due to the bullet actually taking time to make it to the target.

There haven’t been any official photos from 343 but a couple have surfaced from Russia already. There isn’t much that is known about the game itself yet either but there is a quick Q&A from 343 about the new game.

Q: What type of game is Halo Online?
A: Halo Online is a free multiplayer-only PC experience that we’re launching as a closed beta test in Russia.
Q: Does Halo Online represent your future plans for the franchise on PC?
A: Halo Online is a learning opportunity for us as we explore ways to welcome new fans to the “Halo” universe. We’re excited to release a “Halo” multiplayer-only PC experience tailored for Russian gamers.
Q: When will Halo Online be available?
A: The closed beta period will begin in Russia later this spring. There is no definitive launch date at this time.
Q: Are you planning on bringing Halo Online to the Xbox One?
A: Halo Online was built from the ground up specifically for the PC. There are no plans to bring Halo Online to the Xbox One.
Q: Will gamers in other regions like North America and Europe be able to play Halo Online?
A: Right now our focus is on learning as much as we can from the closed beta period in Russia. Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations.
Q: Are you planning to officially launch this year?
A: There is no definitive launch date at this time as we proceed in our closed beta period in Russia.
What do you think about a new free-to-play Halo game for PC? Will it bring all the PC gamers to the Halo franchise or do you think that only those who play both Xbox and PC games will pick it up?

7 big changes coming to Facebook

New York (CNNMoney) — Get ready for more big changes to Facebook.

The social media company announced several new products and features that will launch on its platform soon — all are designed to make it easier for you to communicate with people and businesses.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives debuted the slew of platform enhancements during F8, the company's developer conference, on Wednesday.

Here's what's coming:

1. Spherical videos on your News Feed and Oculus VR headset (if you have one).

Facebook will soon support videos shot with 360-degree camera technology (the same way Google Maps' Street View photos are captured). These videos allow you to change the perspective you see by clicking and dragging on the screen.

Google-owned YouTube recently announced support for this format as well. As video content becomes the ubiquitous format for sharing, expect these two companies to launch even more features at a rapid pace.

2. Track your online purchases and communicate with businesses within Messenger.

Facebook's standalone messaging app will soon be integrated into e-commerce sites. In the future, when you make a purchase online, you can choose to connect your Facebook account so that companies can send you notifications about what you bought directly in the Messenger app.

If you hate getting multiple emails that confirm your order, tell you when your order has been shipped, and if your returns have been received, you might be happy with this update.

3. Reply to messages using other apps.

You can now open third party apps like animated GIF-creator Giphy within the Messenger app to send a message. Previously, you'd have to close the app, open Giphy, create a GIF, and then copy it into a message.

"We truly feel that, together, we have a shot at reinventing how a billion people communicate every day," said David Marcus, head of the Messenger team at Facebook. He also added his love for GIFs. "They make the world a little better."

Messenger also now allows compatible third-parties to prompt people to download their apps directly through the Messenger platform.

4. Videos you post on Facebook can be embedded elsewhere online.

Previously, if you uploaded a video to Facebook, you could only share the video by linking to it. This is another attempt to make it more attractive for people to upload their videos on Facebook instead of YouTube.

5. If you comment on a story somewhere else online, it will show up on Facebook too.

Next time you want to say something about an article you read, remember that it will soon show up automatically under the story posted to Facebook. This change is intended to make it easier for media companies to gain more engagement with their content.

Facebook connect partners BuzzFeed, EliteDaily, The Huffington Post, and Fox Sports are among the first media companies to test this update.

6. Get ready to control more devices with your Facebook account.

The company announced new ways for its developers to build programs that can control everything from your garage door to your self-watering plant. It's Facebook's way of getting into the world of IoT, or the Internet of Things.

"We want to be there with you when you start experimenting with these things," Parse CEO and co-founder Ilya Sukhar told the audience.

It's not clear yet how Facebook will integrate with IoT devices.

7. Developers will get analytics for their apps.

The free dashboard will let developers see who is interacting with their apps and where they're coming from — across all devices.
