New Mobile Malware for Android Discovered

Malware developers continuously find newer methods for infecting people's gadgets. Some of the methods are so effective that the resultant malware threats cause immense harm. A very recent group of malicious programs, a discovery of Symantec, attacks Android devices being used inside China. This malware family has been dubbed Android.Spywaller, softpedia.com reports, December 28, 2015.

Android.Spywaller is unique because when it infects, it hunts for the widely-used security application Qihoo 360 that Chinese Android-operators use. When the malware hunts as well as registers its presence on the Android gadget, it uses identical Unique Identifier (UID) that Qihoo 360 uses. After this, it plants the DroidWall binary, which is an edition of UNIX iptable a bundled program, customized for easy execution on Android gadgets.

One popular firewall utility, the iptable bundled program is designed for Linux running computers. Moreover, DroidWall is the creation of Rodrigo Rosauro an independent security investigator, who after sometime gave away the binary to AVAST for a price during 2011. For some years, the application worked like an open source, and because of that malware developers may yet obtain it through GitHub repositories or Google Code.

Similar as with Android.Spywaller, DroidWall too is usable for locking security applications so they can't interact with their servers, which may be cloud-based e-threat analyzers. Consequently, the security applications become unusable thus letting the malware run without any obstacle, while the device becomes safely accessible to the criminals.

Symantec researchers explain the spyware pretends to be one Google Services application followed with utilizing an authentic security program, which's embedded on the device, for hijacking other security software which could have defended the device. At this point victims become lured since authorized Google utilities such as Google Play aren't available inside China. Consequently, the spyware causes the damage by loading its payload having the malicious program, inside the gadget's memory.

The application, says Symantec, hunts data that it exfiltrates. The data include GPS readings, SMS, call logs, e-mails, system browser information, contact lists, images and radio items. Moreover, the application even garners data from QQ, Coco, Oovoo, BlackBerry Messenger, Talkbox, Skype, SinaWeibo, Wechat, Voxer, TencentWeibo, Zello and WhatsApp.

Microsoft’s new photo app lets you edit your selfies like a professional

Microsoft has released a new photo app designed to feel better about your selfies. It’s a simple service, really: you snap or choose a photo from your iPhone’s camera roll and then process it right in the app.
Just like the editing features in Instagram, Microsoft Selfie (that’s the name of the app) is geared towards making sure that while you’re obsessed with that selfie picture, you’re going to look your absolute best in it. In fact, Microsoft has described the app as a “selfie and portrait enhancement application” where it’ll utilize an algorithm to make your photo appear like it was done by a professional.

Although it’s called Microsoft Selfie, you can use either the front-facing or the rear camera to take photos, which means that you can utilize the app’s technology to make basically any photo you have that much better.
The app takes into account factors like your age, gender, skin tone, lighting, noise, and more before making simple changes to your photo. Users have 13 different filters they can choose from to do the post-processing work, but only one can be used at any given time. Although if you want to apply more filters, you could save the file, reopen it again in the app, and edit it using another filter. Once you’re done processing an image, the file is stored on your phone.
Microsoft Selfie onboarding Microsoft Selfie onboarding
Microsoft Selfie does not contain any connections to social networks like Instagram, Google Photos, Facebook, or Twitter, so if you’re looking to share a photo, you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way.
On the surface, seeing Microsoft create a selfie “enhancement” app is just bizarre especially when it’s built for the iPhone and not for Windows Phone. Does the world really need another selfie app? However, it’s a good way to showcase the potential of the company’s machine learning, artificial intelligence, and image recognition technology, such as how it is using Project Oxford and its face APIs that debuted in April.
Another possible benefit of using this app is how it’ll could vastly improve the quality of photos taken with the front-facing camera. You probably notice that the pictures taken with the rear-facing lens are often better than the front. When you take selfies, there’s also a bunch of noise (it’s grainy), but now Microsoft’s technology can give you the same look and quality across both lenses on the device.
No word on if this will come to Android phones.

Is the iPhone getting a new screen?

The latest round of rumors says Apple will be changing the screen technology in its iPhones.

iphone-6s-17.jpg

What's in a screen? For Apple, it may be the key to the next iPhone.

Rumors are circulating that Apple, the Cupertino, California-based tech behemoth, is working out deals with LG and Samsung to use a different type of screen technology in the iPhone. The screens would change to organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, which promises better-quality images when compared with liquid crystal display, a standard that's been used in computers for years.

The move would mark the first substantive change in screen technology for the iPhone since 2010, when Apple released "retina" displays that promised to show so much detail that users wouldn't be able to distinguish what's on the screen from a printed image. Despite that change, Apple has relied on LCD technology since the iPhone's debut in 2007.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. Neither LG nor Samsung immediately responded to a request for comment. Previous stories from Japan's Nikkei and others have also claimed Apple is planning to change its display technology within the next couple of years.

Speculation about the next iPhone's features is a sport in the technology industry. Publications large and small chase down hints of what might come next, be it a slimmer profile or a different size, or a new feature like wireless charging. There have even been rumors about what Apple will remove, such as a headphone jack.

Sometimes the rumors are correct but Apple ultimately delays the feature to a later iteration of the phone. Other times, reporters pick up on preliminary discussions that Apple is having. And sometimes the rumors are just plain wrong.

When it comes to OLED, though, there's reason to both believe and distrust these rumors.

Apple has signaled a distaste for OLED displays in the past, for example. Three years ago, Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said he considered the technology "awful."

"If you ever buy anything online and really want to know what the color is, as many people do, you should really think twice before you depend on the color from an OLED display," Cook said at the time.

That opinion may have changed however. Since Cook's statements, many of Apple's competitors have switched to OLED displays. Even the Apple Watch, released in April, uses the technology.
