Microsoft Corporation Revamped Bing For iOS Outdoes Google

Microsoft’s Bing app for iOS promises a truly impressive user experience; Bidness Etc takes a look

Microsoft Corporation has rolled out its Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586 to its ring of insiders, and now appears to be moving toward Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS. The company has unleashed a revamped version of its Bing search engine, that attempts to redefine the way one searches the internet using an iPhone. Bidness Etc take a look at the new Bing application that seems to focus on Application Discovery and Quick Interactions.

Almost everyone has recognized the need to streamline search engines on smartphones. Currently, they appear to be PC-based versions which have been made compatible for handsets. Only Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has introduced such changes to Bing that minimize user interaction while carrying out their searches.

Microsoft has introduced a search button within the application which serves as the focal point to perform any standard search. Much like other search engines, Bing also includes popular search topics like “restaurants near me.”

In the application’s main home screen, users are presented with quick tap buttons designed on their preferences. These include “Near Me,” which can show all the nearby available options one has to grab a bite or a cup of coffee.

The application also provides quick links which present users with current movies that are on show in local theaters, along with images and maps. More so, users will come across the latest breaking news when they scroll down within the application. This indicates how much effort Microsoft has put in to make Bing the go-to application for users searching for something.

Microsoft’s new Bing application is one that has a core based on deep-linking; it is capable of launching actual apps when one clicks on apps like YouTube or Twitter. It appears that Bing looks far more useful than Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) own search app, which is yet to understand the need to connect to native iOS applications.

The application also happens to work as a bar-code scanner; you one can point your device’s camera at a QR Code or barcode and Bing will do the rest. The application has some great features but will only succeed if people actually download a separate application to search for content over the internet.

Microsoft has also introduced some much needed improvements in its Bing application. We believe the application will fare even better when the tech giant unleashes Cortana for the iPhone. The company currently has Cortana under testing, but unfortunately Microsoft's conundrum in introducing similar applications is one we are likely to come across in the near future. Microsoft's GM of Search, Ryan Gavin, believes this will not be the case. He said, “The reality is that we don’t think about it that way. We really do think of Cortana as your digital personal assistant. Reaching into search, and reaching into Bing to provide great answers to questions, that’s a big part of her promise, but it’s certainly not her only promise.”

By far, the biggest evidence of Bing’s successful integration with iOS was apparent when it was able to assist Siri queries and even provided web results for the Spotlight feature. Gavin further added, “We continue to have a great partnership with Apple. This is really just a reflection of our work across search, across platforms."

Bing for iOS is currently available for free via Apple’s App Store. The company further revealed that Bing will be brought to Android in the near future.

We decided to go to an expert to find out what's going on an how you can protect yourself.

University of South Florida information systems professor Grandon Gill says there's no definitive answer as to why people who you don't know are requesting to be your friend, but you should be cautious. "For example, if there happens to be someone from the military in these networks, they might be able to start to pick up information from their profile that would identify for example who they are, where they are."

He says many are also looking to steal your identity.

Here are some suggestions on how to protect yourself:

-- Don't accept friend requests from people you don't personally know. If you do, it will open up all of your Facebook friends to this stranger and that person can request more friends.

-- Check your profile. Don't include information like your birth date, address, phone number or maiden name. That can be enough information for someone to steal your identity.

-- Check your privacy settings on Facebook. Make sure you know who can request you as a friend and who can see what you post.

Google allows video chat Hangouts open to everyone

Google is going to make available the video chat service Hangouts for everyone. Who wants to use the service no longer need to have a Google Account.

That Thursday, Google announced in a press release. It is an update that is being rolled out this week.

It is according to Google especially useful for companies that want to discuss information with suppliers or customers want to engage with the conversation.

People can invite each other with a link is sent via Google Calendar. The recipient need only to click the link and typing a name in order to participate in a video chat.

Previously, users had to log in with a Google account, or fill out a form.

Chat Users can adjust the security level of the chat, so that unnecessary guests can be banned.

Google Fit update adds support for strength training, diet and sleep tracking

The software will also be able to display real-time information on daily activities. Android users can expect it to arrive in the coming days.

Google on Thursday announced an update to its Fit app on Android. The health-tracking software will now provide real-time information on your walks, runs and bike rides. The Google Fit app will record your speed, pace, route, elevation and more using only your smartphone. This on top of its ability to already track steps, distance, active minutes, and calories burned throughout the day.

You will also be able to use Google Fit with your Android Wear smartwatch to track strength training. The software will able to detect activities like sit-ups, push-ups, and squats and then automatically add them to your daily workout stats. This is similar to functionality we have seen from third-party apps, such as Wear Fitness Personal Trainer.

Facebook Tries to Ease Heartache of Breakups With New Tool

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook is trying to ease the heartache of breaking up.

A feature announced Thursday will allow people who have split up with a spouse or partner to turn on an option that spares them the emotional pain of constantly seeing their ex-lover's posts and pictures in their news feed on the world's largest social network.

Facebook will begin testing the breakup protection on mobile devices in the U.S. before deciding whether to offer it to all of its 1.5 billion accountholders worldwide.

The option is designed for people who don't want to risk offending a former husband, wife, girlfriend or boyfriend by taking the more extreme step of ejecting or blocking them from their Facebook network.

After changing their relationship status on Facebook, people will also be allowed to remove their names from past posts linking them to a former partner.

"This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives," Facebook product manager Kelly Winters wrote in a blog post.

The breakup protection serves as another reminder of how deeply ingrained Facebook has become in society. More than 1 billion people now hang out on Facebook at least once a day and those who have the network's addictive mobile application installed on their smartphones tend to visit even more frequently.

The Menlo Park, California, company has incentive to try to keep its users as happy as possible. People who become upset with what appears in their Facebook feeds are more likely to avoid coming to the network, depriving the company of the opportunity to collect more information about their preferences and show them ads aimed at those interests.

The formula has turned Facebook into a huge success story since Mark Zuckerberg founded the service in a Harvard University dorm room more than a decade ago. Facebook's market value now stands at $300 billion.
