'Facebook at Work' Is Finally Launching

'Facebook at Work' Is Finally Launching

Facebook at Work, Facebook Inc's professional version of its social network, is expected to launch in the coming months, after spending a year in tests, a company executive said.
The new service, geared towards workplace collaboration, is nearly identical to its ubiquitous social network, with a scrolling news "feed", "likes" and a chat service.
"I would say 95 percent of what we developed for Facebook is also adopted for Facebook at Work," Julien Codorniou, director of global platform partnerships at Facebook, told Reuters.
However, Facebook at Work users will maintain special profiles that are distinct from their existing Facebook profiles.
The company is also developing exclusive products for Facebook at Work, including security tools, Codorniou said.
Facebook started beta-testing the service in January and has kept it as a free, "invite-only" service for companies so far.
The service will be open to all companies once launched and Facebook plans to charge "a few dollars per month per user" for premium services such as analytics and customer support, a company spokeswoman said.
The online career market, which includes LinkedIn Corp (LNKD.N) and Monster Worldwide Inc (MWW.N), is worth about $6 billion a year, market research firm IDC had said in August.
More than 300 companies, including Heineken, Royal Bank of Scotland and jewelry company Stella and Dot, are using Facebook at Work and Club Mediterranee SA is set to be the latest adopter.
The French resort company will offer the service to all its 13,000 employees through summer 2016, Anne Browaeys-Level, Club Mediterranee's chief marketing & digital officer, told Reuters.
Facebook's Codorniou said almost everything on Facebook at Work is the same as the regular Facebook social network, with some minor exceptions.
"You cannot play Candy Crush on Facebook at Work."

Facebook releases design for its souped-up A.I. server, 'Big Sur'

Facebook Big Sur

Facebook is releasing the hardware design for a server it uses to train artificial intelligence (A.I.) software, allowing other companies exploring A.I. to build similar systems.

Code-named Big Sur, Facebook uses the server to run its machine learning programs, a type of A.I. software that "learns" and gets better at tasks over time. It's contributing Big Sur to the Open Compute Project, which it set up to let companies share designs for new hardware.

One common use for machine learning is image recognition, where a software program studies a photo or video to identify the objects in the frame. But it's being applied to all kinds of large data sets, to spot things like email spam and credit card fraud.

Facebook, Google and Microsoft are all pushing hard at A.I., which helps them build smarter online services. Facebook has released some open-source A.I. software in the past, but this is the first time it's released A.I. hardware.

Big Sur relies heavily on GPUs, which are often more efficient than CPUs for machine learning tasks. The server can have as many as eight high-performance GPUs that each consume up to 300 watts, and can be configured in a variety of ways via PCIe.

Facebook said the GPU-based system is twice as fast as its previous generation of hardware. "And distributing training across eight GPUs allows us to scale the size and speed of our networks by another factor of two," it said in a blog post Thursday.

One notable thing about Big Sur is that it doesn't require special cooling or other "unique infrastructure," Facebook said. High performance computers generate a lot of heat, and keeping them cool can be costly. Some are even immersed in exotic liquids to stop them overheating.

Big Sur doesn't need any of that, according to Facebook. It hasn't released the hardware specs yet, but images show a large airflow unit inside the server that presumably contains fans that blow cool air across the components. Facebook says it can use the servers in its air-cooled data centers, which avoid industrial cooling systems to keep costs down.

Like a lot of other Open Compute hardware, it's designed to be as simple as possible. OCP members are fond of talking about the "gratuitous differentiation" that server vendors put in their products, which can drive up costs and make it harder to manage equipment from different vendors.

"We've removed the components that don't get used very much, and components that fail relatively frequently — such as hard drives and DIMMs — can now be removed and replaced in a few seconds," Facebook said. All the handles and levers that technicians are supposed to touch are colored green, so the machines can be serviced quickly, and even the motherboard can be removed within a minute. "In fact, Big Sur is almost entirely tool-less --the CPU heat sinks are the only things you need a screwdriver for" Facebook says.

It's not sharing the design to be altruistic: Facebook hopes others will try out the hardware and suggest improvements. And if other big companies ask server makers to build their own Big Sur systems, the economies of scale should help drive costs down for Facebook.

Machine learning has come to the fore lately for a couple of reasons. One is that large data sets used to train the systems have become publicly available. The other is that powerful computers have gotten affordable enough to do some impressive A.I. work.

Facebook pointed to software it developed already that can read stories, answer questions about an image, play games, and learn tasks by observing examples. "But we realized that truly tackling these problems at scale would require us to design our own systems," it said.

Big Sur, named after a stretch of picturesque California coastline, uses GPUs from Nvidia, including its Tesla Accelerated Computing Platform.

Facebook said it will to triple its investment in GPUs so that it can bring machine learning to more of its services.

"Big Sur is twice as fast as our previous generation, which means we can train twice as fast and explore networks twice as large," it said. "And distributing training across eight GPUs allows us to scale the size and speed of our networks by another factor of two."

Google is also rolling out machine learning across more of its services. "Machine learning is a core, transformative way by which we’re rethinking everything we’re doing," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in October.

Facebook didn't say when it would release the specifications for Big Sur. The next OCP Summit in the U.S. takes place in March, so it might say more about the system more then.

And Poof! Google Previews Its Own Content Delivery Network

And partners like Akamai should be worried.

Well this is interesting. Just weeks after inking a deal with Akamai, the leader in content delivery network (CDN) services, Google is now previewing an early version of its own Cloud CDN service, according to the company’s website.

This service appears to build on the company’s existing content network—the purpose of which is to put all sorts of data types, big video files etc., as close as possible to users to speed up response time. All of those locally cached files means less delay between you clicking, for example, on that YouTube link and actually seeing the video play. Google already has partnerships with Akamai  AKAM 0.81% , as well as with other CDN providers like Cloudflare, Fastly, Level 3 Communications and Highwinds.

The difference here is that Google is automating the service and making it more broadly available to third-party customers.

Here’s how Google  GOOG -0.29%  describes its latest entry, which was first spotted by VentureBeat:

Google Cloud CDN uses Google’s globally distributed edge caches to cache HTTP(S) Load Balanced content close to your users. Caching content at the edges of Google’s network provides faster delivery of content to your users while reducing the load on your servers.
On Wednesday, Fortune reported that Google, which is building its Google Cloud Platform business, may use those existing network end points to put more computing power, sort of mini-data centers, in more locations worldwide. That would help it catch up to Amazon Web Services  AMZN -0.37%  and Microsoft Azure  MSFT 0.53% , both of which currently host more cloud data center facilities globally than Google.

What is new in the latest Google post is not the CDN itself, but the linkage between the CDN’s edge caching stations and the load balancer which, as its name implies, divvies up traffic among the various caching stations. Also new is that any type of content, not just object files, can make use of this service.

This could be a first step toward using Google’s caching end points as cloud service extenders, as reported. Or perhaps not. Fortune reached out to Google for comment and will update this story as needed.

Google is stepping up its war on adware

Scammy programs and browser extensions are a persistent problem on the web, but web companies are starting to take them seriously as a threat to the web. In a post today, Google surveyed the past year's efforts to fight unwanted software, and came away with some impressive statistics. Chrome user complaints about unwanted extensions dropped from 40 percent to 20 percent of total complaints, spurred by an aggressive banning campaign earlier this year. At the same time, more than 14 million Chrome users removed unwanted extensions and the number of unwanted-software-related warnings on Adwords dropped 95 percent.
That's good news, but it's just a dent in the larger adware ecosystem. In May, a study found that as many as 5 million computers visiting Google sites are infected with some form of adware, and Google believes that one in 10 Chrome browsers have some form of hijacked settings. Now that unwanted software warnings have been folded into Chrome's Safe Browsing feature, the browser displays more than 5 million such warnings a day.
5 MILLION CHROME WARNINGS A DAY
To lower that number, Google has launched a number of new initiatives. Earlier this year, Google shifted to a stricter pre-approval process for downloadable content on Adwords, rather than trying to catch unwanted programs after the fact. Google Search also began deprecating sites that serve unwanted software, and added a design element to highlight the canonical source of free programs like Twitter, Firefox, and Slack, making it harder for third parties to distribute adware-bundled versions of the software.
Still, Google's powers are limited, particularly for non-Chrome users. "We only cover parts of the web," said Moheeb Rajab, an engineer on the Google security team. "It's an open platform, and effective protection for users will take wider participation from the industry."
In the past, adware manufacturers have looked to Adwords as a way to distribute software, but recent changes have made the platform much less hospitable. Google's own data estimates that less than 1 percent of unwanted software is served through Adwords. Still, the company's critics aren't entirely mollified by the shift. "These efforts are all going in the right direction, but one might reasonably wish that Google had done more earlier," said Harvard Business School professor Ben Edelman, a longtime Google critic who has also consulted for Microsoft. "Indeed, it’s not hard to find Google’s systems still supporting deceptive software. In my work testing adware forensically, I still see this often. Still, I’m glad Google has engaged with these issues with renewed vigor."

This simple trick will speed up your iPhone

Want your iPhone to run faster? Here's a clever tip that's doing the rounds

If you've got an iPhone and you occasionally find it running slower than you'd like, here's a handy tip to get it running faster.
The trick was discovered by self-confessed Apple fan Marc Forrest, whose tweet from November has picked up a huge amount of interest over the past few days:
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it.
1. Unlock your iPhone so you're viewing the home screen.
2. Hold down the power button to activate the ‘Slide to Power Off’ message.
3. Release the power button, then press the Home button for five seconds.
These steps will refresh your phone’s RAM, killing off processes that might be slowing your phone down.
Marc, who blogs about tech issues at marcforrest.com ,says: ‘I have done a number of tests to see if it works and I can promise it helps speed the phone up, a LOT!’
