Apple Watch Sales Figures Do Not Matter

After a strong weekend of online reservations, analysts are projecting over one million Apple Watches have been sold. Apple is not releasing any numbers just yet, but the focus on the immediate sales performance is not being driven by Cook. The Apple Watch, at least in this generation, should not be measured by its financial performance. It should be measured by knowledge.

Of course Cupertino will have internal benchmarks, and of course there will be indicators that will mark out the launch of the Apple Watch as a success. But alongside the financial markers and the volume measurements, there will be more ephemeral KPIs that matter to Tim Cook and Apple.

I think that the real sales push, just like Microsoft of old, will be on the third generation of Apple Watch. That’s when the Apple Watch will have all the UI issues sorted out, significant app support, and a groundswell of geekerati declaring their Apple Watches to be revolutionary; that’s when the word of mouth will reach deafening proportions; that’s when all the bugs and issues will be knocked out of the software; that’s when all the health apps and watch sensors will be switched on; that’s when Apple’s vision will be fully on display.

Much as the first iPhone was a feature phone that allowed Apple to gather critical experience and data in the mobile phone space, the first Apple Watch will be used to align Apple’s ideas on wearable technology with the public. It will be an opportunity to educate the first wave of users, and those watching Apple’s progress, in how Apple wants a smartwatch to be used. In essence, the first batch of Apple Watches is less about selling a product, more about selling an idea.

Attaching the Apple name to the watch means that it is going to sell. The high prices at launch and the celebrity endorsements will ensure that Apple does not lose significant amount of money on this project. But the real value to Apple is not in the short-term sales or the increased interest, the real value is the information it gathers from usage patterns, sales, developer feedback, bug reports, and real-world statistics that it can gather on smartwatch usage.

Apple’s vision has created a good smartwatch. Apple’s vision plus public feedback can deliver a better smartwatch in the future. And that’s the watch to watch out for.

Apple Loop: Tattoogate Breaks Your Apple Watch, iOS 8.2 Terminated, iPhone 7 Plans

Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop looks at Apple’s rush to remove iOS 8.2, three new iPhone 7 handsets, the iPad Pro feature set, emotions behind the Apple Watch, the wristband accessory guidelines, Applebot debuts, streaming music services and Beats, and the Apple Watch’s tattoo issue.

Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read our weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).

Nice iOS Version, Shame We Have To Kill It

Unlike the slow rollout of Android Lollipop (not yet reaching ten percent in the ten months since it was announced), Apple’s rollout of iOS updates  is both slick and efficient, with the majority of eligible handsets upgrading in short order. Apple is also quick to lock out older version that may have a number of bugs that need to be avoided.

Gordon Kelly looks at just such an arrangement with Apple’s withdrawal of iOS 8.2 and a bigger push than normal to get everyone onto iOS 8.3.

You have to hand it to Apple, it knows how to get the latest versions of iOS onto users’ devices – one way or another. The positive way is Apple’s unparalleled ability to make updates immediately available to all. But there is also a more sneaky method and Apple has just used it again…

As a result seven week old iOS 8.2 has been unceremoniously killed off by what Apple calls ‘code signing’. This leaves iOS 8.3 as the only version of iOS which the company will allow to be installed on owner’s iPads, iPhones and iPod touches.

Full details can be found here.

A Triple Threat Of iPhones

Apple’s hardware release cycle strongly suggests that the next generation of iPhone handsets will be announced in September. The easiest answer to what they will feature would lead people to think that two models will be released, to replace the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Seeking Alpha’s Bill Maurer thinks that the mythical third handset will finally arrive in four months time:

This is the perfect time for Apple to go with three new phones. Apple can launch two new larger screen phones, and we’ll call them the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus for now. Eventually, I think Apple will need a new naming system because I don’t think in a few years consumers will be out celebrating the “iPhone 12″. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus would be the same screen size as the 6 and 6 Plus, but would have upgraded specs. Apple would then discontinue the 5S/5C, but could use those production lines to produce a 4 inch model with upgraded specs, and this would be the third model. We’ll call it the “7 Mini” for this argument. Thus, we would have new models with screen sizes of 4, 4.7, and 5.5 inches. Apple might also decide to stay with the 6 and 6 Plus, discounting these models a bit.

What do you think?

The Subtle Targeting Of The iPad Pro

Along with the potentially new iPhones, there is an expectation that the iPad range will receive an updated larger version of the table with a twelve-inch screen. Imaginatively titled by the media as  the iPad Pro, it is going to encroach on the same territory as the Microsoft Surface 3, but Tim Cook will likely be targeting a professional and artistic audience. Helping that will be the new technology seen in the new slimline MacBook. Luke Villapaz checks the boxes:

Force Touch, a feature first introduced in the Apple Watch and redesigned MacBook, could also find its way into the tablet’s touchscreen. The technology enables a touchscreen or trackpad to tell the difference between a tap and a hard press. Users of the iPad Pro may also be able to control it through an included Bluetooth stylus. That may also come with pressure-sensitive features which can be used with sketching and drawing apps.

I doubt the iPad Pro will have a huge impact on the iPad range’s sales numbers. The larger screen and use-cases mean the targeting of the iPad Pro will be tightly focused - think artists, designers, architects, and draughtsmen – but it will be a machine that delivers a unique experience to a group that has not been served especially well with tablet hardware

The Emotions Driving The Apple Watch

Forbes’s Lea Lane has spent a few weeks with the Apple Watch,. Being a ‘regular user’ rather than a fully paid up member of the Silicon Valley geekerati, she’s found Tim Cook’s wearable to be engaging and relatively hassle-free:

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for Dell Venue 8 rolling out, includes forced encryption

Dell's tablet offering, the Venue 8 is finally updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but there's a downside. It is also encrypting the device without user consent, which is a bit problematic.  Although most manufacturers make encryption an optional choice for the user, the Dell Venue 8 is doing so without asking. This happens during the 'Android is upgrading' message that one can see during the Android 5.0.2 update download. The Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 were caught in a similar controversy recently.

With encryption, it is likely that Dell hopes to target the non-casual user.  Most casual users will be against the move as it does hit the performance of the devices. On the other hand, those who see the device as a stand-in laptop and use it for professional reasons are likely to appreciate the additional security.

The inclusion if the encryption process during the update has not been seen before. It remains to be seen how users react to what they might see as their right to choose. By not providing an option to encrypt, Dell might have alienated some of its users as well. The update has begun rolling out officially.

Facebook Says Your News Bubble Is Your Fault, Twitter Bolsters Its Marketing, and Pinterest Raises More Money

This week in social media, the blame for your Facebook bubble was officially placed on... you. Meanwhile, Twitter bolstered its marketing team, Snapchat debuted new video ads, Pinterest raised $186 million in funding, and Meerkat cozied up to Facebook.

Many media analysts worry that the algorithm-powered way most American get their news on sites like Facebook leads to a "bubble" -- where users eventually only see news and perspectives that they agree with.

It's a problem if you believe the capital-T Truth can only be reached by challenging your own viewpoint. But that's your problem, because it's your fault, says Facebook.
After studying millions of its most political users, Facebook released a research report in the journal Science this week officially placing the blame for myopic news feeds not on its algorithms, but on users' choices.

"In the end, we find individual choices, both in terms of who they choose to be friends with and what they select, matters more than the effect of algorithmic sorting," said Facebook data scientist and the study's co-author, Eytan Bakshy.

In fact, the study found that Facebook's algorithm only makes a less-than 1 percent difference in reducing content with opposing viewpoints. Most of the ideological filtering happened at the point of friendship, with users tending to make connections with people who shared the same political viewpoint in the first place.

New App Install Ads, And New Ways to Block

On the business side, Facebook introduced a new tool for direct marketers to advertise apps -- while also introducing a tool for users to block app invites.

The new app install ad system incorporates open, cross-platform standards for deep linking apps, which according to TechCrunch, could increase Facebook's already gangbusters ad revenues by making it easier for marketers to get users from the point of seeing the ad all the way to downloading and installing it.

On the other hand, Facebook added a new option to the Settings page of its web platform called "Block App Invites" to help users remove annoying spam from friends who are entirely too interested in getting you to join them on Candy Crush Saga.

Twitter:

More Help at the Top for Marketing

As we reported in last week's Social Media Sunday, Twitter has been underperforming on Wall Street so consistently that it's nearing a crossroads for its very survival.
This week, Twitter took one step in bolstering its wimpy revenues by adding a new job to Twitter CFO Anthony Noto, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Noto will now head up the marketing team for Twitter at a time when the company needs to start producing. Noto has a track record of bolstering Twitter's position in the online world, as he was the point man on the company's recent deal to incorporate tweets into Google search results.
Meerkat:

Heading Facebook's Way?

Speaking of short-sighted Twitter, the social network has caused plenty of headaches for live-streaming phenom (and Twitter-owned Periscope rival) Meerkat, denying the app access to its data streams and generally trying to downplay the app as much as possible.

That may not have to put Meerkat down for good, but it seems like it was at least enough to push it away -- and toward Facebook. According to Digital Trends, rumors are circling that Facebook may be interested in acquiring Meerkat just as the live-streaming service announced an update to introduce support for Facebook accounts, along with a release soon of a developer platform.
Snapchat:

Introducing Ten Second Ads, at Two Cents Per View

Snapchat just got serious about its Discover platform for publishers. At the Daily Mail NewsFronts event this week, Snapchat unveiled 10-second ads for media companies, brands, and publishers that cost only two cents per view, according to AdWeek.

The program is appropriately called Two Pennies, and it represents a huge drop in price for advertising on the Snapchat Discover network, which launched in January at a price of 15 cents per view. This "change" means Snapchatters are likely to see more sponsored content from media outlets, and it means Snapchat's Discover platform may revitalize after months of stagnation.

Pinterest:

$186 Million in New Funding Round

It may not be the biggest funding round Pinterest's has ever had, but an additional $186 million in the image-sharing social media startup can't hut. According to Re/Code, the Series G funding round leaves Pinterest with a total of $553 million, and it's now letting its employees sell some of their shares in the company.

Normally at startups, employees are required to purchase their stock options within three months after they quit the company, which can be expensive (and is a way to boost employee retention).
But Pinterest isn't worried about losing staff. "We're trying to build this opt-in culture, and we think this is the way to do it," Sharp said to Re/Code. "People want to work at a company that has their best interest in mind."

Google Adding "Pre-Register" Option To Play Store

When you browse through apps in the Google Play Store you may begin to see something a little different. Google is now allowing developers to post their apps as “Coming Soon” with an option for users to pre-register for to receive notifications to tell them when the app is ready for download.

Glu will be the first developer to use the new feature with their new game “Terminator Genisys: Revolution” which is available for “Pre-Registration” now.

As of now Google is not charging users to pre-register, and users can un-register at any time.

For the more highly anticipated apps this can be a heavily used feature. If this becomes a heavily used feature with developers hopefully Google will add a “Coming Soon” section to the Google Play Store to prevent overcrowding.

Microsoft may not replace Windows 10; could be the last version of the OS

News has it that there won’t be a Windows 11. Yes, Windows 10 is the last traditional release from the company, and Microsoft will improve it by adding enhancements and updates in the future.

TheVerge quotes Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon, a developer evangelist speaking at the company’s Ignite conference saying, “Right now we’re releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we’re all still working on Windows 10.”

He reportedly went on to explain how Microsoft has been working on the base of Windows 10 all through last year even when it launched Windows 8.1. The company will continue to further push updates to this latest OS, but will avoid releasing a complete new version.

The reason for this change is Microsoft reportedly plans to launch Windows as a service. However, doesn’t really explain how it plans to do so. “Microsoft has altered the way it engineers and delivers Windows, and the initial result is Windows 10. Instead of big releases, there will be regular improvements and updates. Part of this is achieved by splitting up operating system components like the Start Menu and built-in apps to be separate parts that can be updated independently to the entire Windows core operating system,” points out TheVerge report.

“Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers,” a Microsoft spokesperson later told the news site.

The company recently announced the latest build for Windows 10. Read on to find out what’s new.

CHIP the world's cheapest computer: $9, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage, WiFi

New Delhi: Who would have thought owning a computer could get this cheap! Listed on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter, CHIP is a fully functional computer, complete with built-in WiFi, all for just $9.

Dubbed CHIP, this computer is essentially a dev board but has specifications at par with standard traditional computers: 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of onboard storage and Bluetooth to connect cordless peripherals.

A report on Geek notes that the dev board-looking CHIP can run a full Linux desktop and do all what a normal computer does; you can hook up power, run a video cable to a display, surf with Chromium, chat in Pidgin, or watch videos in VLC using the 2.3 x 1.5 inches tiny computer.

What makes CHIP this cheap is its core that has been pulled out of an inexpensive Chinese tablet. CHIP uses an Allwinner SoC, which is powerful yet cheap and is installed in numerous bargain-priced devices on sites like Aliexpress or Geekbuying.

The cheap tag is only for the basic configuration, if you want a VGA or HDMI port, you'll need to spend $10 and $15 extra respectively. It can also be turned into a handheld PC that looks like a maker's BlackBerry for $40 more.

While CHIP makes even the $35 Raspberry Pi 2 seem overpriced, the cheapest dev board isn't seeing the light of the day anytime before May, 2016 when it begins shipping.

FCC strikes down petition to delay new net neutrality rules

From the moment the Federal Communications published its Open Internet order — rules designed to protect net neutrality — on March 12th, it has faced multiple legal challenges from telecoms companies keen to shoot down the new regulations and keep the status quo.

Most recently, on May 1st, a group of organizations including AT&T, CenturyLink, USTelecom, and wireless trade association CTIA petitioned for the FCC to delay the implementation of its Open Internet order, arguing that reclassifying broadband as a service is against the public interest. But the FCC is fighting back.

Last Friday the Commission denied the petition, issuing an order that states its classification of broadband internet as a telecommunications service "falls well within the Commission's statutory authority, is consistent with Supreme Court precedent, and fully complies with the Administrative Procedure Act." The petition had argued specifically against the reclassification, stating that it would lead to "unrecoverable losses" for broadband providers, and "significant costs" that would hurt consumers. Some of the FCC's rulings were more acceptable to the petitioners, however — the organizations involved did not complain about the three "bright line" rules that stop providers from blocking legal content, throttling subscribers, and from offering paid prioritization.

While this latest petition has been halted, the FCC still has to get its rulings through court, and past an array of lawsuits designed to take them down. FCC head Tom Wheeler is sure the Open Internet order will get through, bringing in a new and fairer set of rules for the internet, but his commission's success in striking this petition down is just one battle of many to come.
