Middle school student wins prestigious art award for animation

What began as fiddling with his mother’s iPad has turned into a national award for Chickahominy Middle School eighth-grader Pablo McCrimmon.

Pablo, 14, won a gold medal in film and animation from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for “The Thanksgiving Song” and is one of 16 recipients of the award in various categories in the Richmond region.

Winners of the award hail from Canada to Croatia to South Korea, and Pablo is one of five recognized for film and animation, including home-schooled student Abby Goss, 17, of Ashland, who won the silver medal in the category. There were 70 gold and silver medal winners in Virginia for 2015.
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards started in 1923 to recognize artistic talent in addition to traditional athletic achievements in schools and has since become a prestigious honor with alumni such as Andy Warhol and Robert Redford.

Pablo got his start in animation on a simple app when he was in sixth grade and used it for projects his teachers assigned with some creative freedom. He later saved up $200 for an animation tablet to draw with a pen instead of a mouse and took over his family’s spare room for his workspace.
He said he gets illustration inspiration from “Eddsworld,” a YouTube video series, and Matt Groening, the co-creator of “The Simpsons.” Pablo’s creations include music videos, anecdotes inspired by classroom happenings, and “Pablo’s Life,” for which he is on the third installment.

“I really like YouTube because it gives me a platform to get feedback and share with my audience,” Pablo said. He has attended animation workshops held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, gaining mentors and peers in the craft. He’s working on making his animation more fluid and cleaning up his design, he said.

The song in the award-winning animation was itself inspired by his mother’s prodding when he sat at the Thanksgiving table getting increasingly antsy waiting for the food.
“What should I do?” Pablo recalls asking his mother, Catherine Ingrassia. “There’s not many Thanksgiving carols.”

It was his third animated video ever, and he completed it in a little more than a week. His mother found out about the Scholastic contest and encouraged him to enter it.
“So I guess the moral of the story in animation is to listen to your mother,” he said with a smile. “It’s really exciting because I never thought my animation would be award-winning.”
Pablo and other winners will attend an awards ceremony in New York City in June.

Nintendo to Release its First Mobile Game This Year, 4 More in 2017

Nintendo announced Friday that it is joining the mobile gaming craze with plans to release its first game for smartphones later this year.

Nintendo announced Friday that it is joining the mobile gaming craze with plans to release its first game for smartphones later this year.

The Japanese game developer won't stop there, as it added that it will release four more mobile titles in 2017, according to Engadget. Releasing five mobile games in two years doesn't sound like a lot, but Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said it's the right strategy for his company.

"When we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all," Iwata said.

Nintendo said it has several challenges to deal with while entering the mobile game market, such as fans of its Wii U platform getting use to smartphone touchscreens as replacements for game controls, FOX21News reported. The company said the unpredictability of the market could also make success difficult to achieve, so it will have to be careful about picking characters and franchises for the games.

"The odds of success are quite low if consumers cannot appreciate the quality of a game," Nintendo said. "If we did not aim to achieve a significant result, it would be meaningless for us to do it at all."

Top mobile titles Nintendo will have to contend with include "Angry Birds," Jungle Run," "Candy Crush" and "Subway Surfers."

Nintendo said it will have its first mobile game available to smartphone users by the end of this year, and the rest will be available by March 2017, The Next Web reported. Other details, such as what characters will appear in the games, have yet to be revealed.

The announcement follows two months after Nintendo revealed it was working with mobile game developer DeNA on a new membership service that will let people play games on mobile devices as well as the Wii U and 3DS. While the company didn't say which games would be available in the service or how much membership will cost, it did say that it will make the service available to gamers this fall.

You have a hidden SEO advantage that most overlook

Soup up your SEO game

With so much content online, and so many websites competing to reach the top of the search engine results list, your business’s website can be easily overlooked. Experts in search engine optimization (SEO) can provide a wealth of information about how to improve your site’s visibility within search engines, thus increasing your overall site traffic.

According to the SEO consultants at econsultancy.com, optimizing searches for PDFs from your site is one the “most overlooked SEO opportunities around today.”

You have a hidden advantage

One of the best ways to increase your site’s visibility within search engines is to try to get a link to your site posted on other well-established sites on similar topics or from comparable businesses. Unfortunately, many websites will not post external links to competing websites.

However, many are willing to share PDF files relevant to their site’s users. So whether you are linking your PDF from your site directly, or sharing it through another site, it’s worth taking the time to optimize searches for the PDF file.

Google and other search engines analyze PDFs in exactly the same manner as websites, so PDF optimization is very similar to page optimization and will increase the searchability and visibility of your site overall.

So here’s how to optimize your PDFs

Econsulty recommends several measures to improve searchability for your PDF. Many seem obvious, but it is surprising how few companies take the time to make their PDFs as accessible as possible.

The first step is to be sure that the PDF contains a link back to your home site, perhaps through the company logo. You might also want to consider including a link with a form email so that users who read your PDF can contact you directly.

Secondly, be sure that the name of the PDF file is highly descriptive and specific. Using hyphens helps clarify long strings of words, but avoid symbols like the ampersand (&). Use searchable, relevant keywords in your headings, as well as in the table of contents for the document.

Lastly, be sure that the words in the PDF are, in fact, cut and pasted text, and not images of text, as Google does not scan images for keyword content. Make sure each image in the PDF has a descriptive file image name, and be sure to also create extra alt content for each important image.

3 Ways to Dominate the Local SEO Game

When Google updated their algorithm, they changed the game of local SEO as we know it.  Unfortunately, not all of us are aware of what the new rules mean for maintaining a thriving website.

The biggest thing to recognize about Google’s new algorithm is that your opponent is not a computer or some electronic coding device, it is actually a human; more specifically, it’s a grouping of some of Google’s finest employees. And unlike previously monitored computer “readers” who were susceptible to formulaic writings, your new opponents cannot be tricked. They know exactly what is going on. Most importantly, they like to be treated like humans, not robots. Which means that as the writer, you should target your copy towards humans who are reading it, not for computers to process it.

There are a lot of things you can do to enhance your local SEO through content and copy. Here’s some suggestions on how to impress Google’s new algorithm and set your website up for success.

1. Enhance Your Photos Locally

It isn’t always enough to have solid content on your website. Having the right descriptions for your images plays a part in your local SEO, as well. When you include photos on your site, be sure that they are high-quality. The better image description you can provide for each, the happier Google will be. Also, do not forget that when you label your photo, you should include the city and state information in your alt text. This small addition to your photos will help to increase the local relevancy of your page.

2. Optimize Your Title Tag

A title tag is absolutely necessary for optimization. We recommend that before you even begin writing your content that you complete a title tag filled out for your post or page. In your title tag, include your city and state. This information is important because it becomes an automatic signal for local relevancy.

3. Create Killer Content

It’s a common mistake to omit location from the actual content copy of the site. Don’t let yourself be sucked into this bad habit. When you are writing content that is locally-sensitive, be absolutely sure that you include the city and state! Unless you include your local information, you cannot realistically optimize your site for local SEO.

By using these three tactics in your website copy, you will have a jumpstart over your competitors, letting you stand out as the authority in your area. Taking these certain steps will allow you to shift your focus from your site ranking to meeting your niche market’s demands.

Art of Ecommerce: Building an Interactive Digital Marketplace

Digital technology is advancing at such a rapid rate that we often forget there is an art behind the science. This is especially true when it comes to e-commerce. It takes a special breed of techie to know how to convert visitors to customers with more than just statistics as a backdrop. It is all well and good to know how Google ranks webpages and how many visitors bounce off a page, but on some level, a web developer must rely on instinct – a gut level feeling. Knowing what drives visitors to buy is an art, based on science of course, which is inevitably connected to responsive web design!

Web Design Elements that Convert

As the name implies, web design is a creative endeavour that is a perfect blend of art and science. It takes a whole lot of IT know-how to code and program a website, but it takes the eye of an artist to view it as visitors would. Is the site appealing to the eye? Is it too busy for anyone to navigate their way around? What about colour combinations and graphics? Sometimes we, as web developers, get so caught up in using every tool in our arsenal that we forget to step back and look at our design as a first-time visitor would see it. As you can easily notice, the best WordPress responsive themes are simple. This happens because of offering a better interaction.

Let’s take the concept of colour as an example. There is scientific data that substantiates the fact that certain colours evoke a variety of moods. This is where art meets science in that the web developer needs to sit back and think about what those colours say to him/her. If the goal is to get a visitor to buy a product or service, certain colours may work better for specific markets. For an undertaker’s website you certainly wouldn’t want to use neons and pastels for example.

Layout and Functionality

Now we come to the biggest grievance so many visitors express in comments they leave. The worst deterrent to conversions is the functionality of a website’s layout. If the visitor can’t find an easy way to add items to the shopping cart or to pay for those items once they are tallied, it is likely they will go somewhere a little more user-friendly.

This is even more of a problem with mobile devices. The screens are already so little that it is difficult enough to read the product description without hunting for the order and payment options. Today’s web developers keep that in mind by using a marketplace script that has been especially developed for mobile apps. However, the online merchant benefits as well! Most of today’s digital market script apps also do everything from taking payments to calculating fees payable to such entities as PayPal. These handy, not-so-little apps are a godsend to online merchants who have little to no experience with running an e-commerce site.

Anyone in the business of designing e-commerce websites is both an artist and a scientist. The trick is to be Picasso and Sir Isaac Newton wrapped into one tidy package. Get a ‘feel’ for how visitors react when they first hit the site and then utilise apps that make it easy for them to buy. If you can accomplish that, you’ve done your job.

How e-commerce can help traditional workers

I was recently in Geneva to attend a meeting that discussed the experience of growing e-commerce in developing countries. The meeting was organized by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Geneva, a non-profit organization that works in the areas of trade, development and human rights.

There were representatives from countries such as Cuba, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Panama, Guatemala, Peru, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Venezuela. The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), too, sent their representatives. Among the concerns raised at the conference was the gradual shift of trade in developing countries to online channels—areas in which these countries lag.

I am no expert on e-commerce and cannot speak on its legislative, regulatory or policy aspects. Yet, I guess the reason they invited me was not just to know about e-commerce issues in developing countries, but also to know how connectivity, access, digital literacy and mobile penetration could help expand e-commerce activities.

The nations mentioned above need to lobby the WTO so their businesses, too, can benefit from this shift.
Ironically, similar discussions on how technology-driven e-commerce can help small town communities and micro-business clusters based on traditional skills are conspicuously absent in India. It was, therefore, heartening to note there are Latin American countries that are concerned for the right reasons.

Unctad has published a report called Information Economy Report 2015: Unlocking the Potential of E-commerce for Developing Countries, in which India finds mention only in a few places. “It is not that not much is happening in India in the e-commerce sector, but it is so hard to get good data from India, and that’s one reason we don’t have much of India in the report,” Unctad representative Torbjörn Fredriksson told me.

At the meeting, I shared a homegrown model on how a connected micro-enterprise cluster can be nurtured into a digitally enabled cluster, and how such connected and broadband-enabled traditional skills-based clusters could change the entire business ecosystem, with e-commerce perched like a crown at the top.

Chanderi is a cluster of about 3,500 weaving households in Madhya Pradesh that has been involved in weaving fine silk fabrics, including saris, for several centuries. It is just one of India’s estimated 545 traditional handloom weaving clusters and 2,000 traditional skills-based clusters.

These clusters suffer from apathy, exploitation by middlemen, poor market reach, bad health and education facilities, lack of alternative livelihood, poor civic amenities, broken government infrastructure and unfulfilled promises. However, all such clusters have one thing in common: they are populated by enterprising people who understand the meaning of profit and loss.

When I shared with our Latin American friends and Unctad how the fortunes of Chanderi changed in three to five years, they told me that they wanted to replicate the experience in their countries. I pointed out that the major change came from widespread connectivity, availability of Wi-Fi on demand, and connecting schools, shops, banks, offices, post offices, health centres and all those micro-enterprises to the Internet. Today, there is a dedicated centre where all silk fabric designs take place digitally and on machines by the weavers themselves, rather than on sheets of paper. Even big businesses and traders get their designs done from this digital design centre by paying a fee.

Products featuring mesmerizing weaving designs are available at chanderiyaan.net, an e-commerce portal. However, the real story is that most of the logistics related to photographing products, uploading them online, managing customers and couriering goods are all done by members of the local community with little outside intervention. According to a study by the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Chanderi’s turnover from the weaving cluster has tripled simply by removing the information asymmetry.

The clear message is that each and every cluster in the country that can be classically defined as a traditional skill-based cluster could adopt a holistic approach to meticulously integrating digital tools and connectivity in each segment of the ecosystem and enjoy the story of a sustainable economic and cultural transformation.

While I hope that the Chanderiyaan model could be replicated across all weaving clusters of the country and perhaps several Latin American countries, too, we at the Digital Empowerment Foundation have our task cut out to replicate the model in at least three more clusters. Work has now started at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh and Bargarh and Nuapatna in Odisha.

Alibaba buys stake in U.S. e-commerce site Zulily

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has taken a stake of more than 9% in U.S. e-commerce site Zulily Inc., giving it new exposure to the American consumer market.

The stake was disclosed in a securities filing the showed Alibaba spent around $56 million buying stock in Zulily, much of it as the U.S. The company’s shares plunged in recent days.

It wasn’t previously known that Alibaba owned Zulily shares. The Seattle-based website sells a wide range of clothing and other merchandise mostly aimed at moms. It offers deep discounts in “flash sales” that typically have time limits.

The company considers Alibaba BABA, -0.09%  a competitor, according to Zulily’s ZU, +12.82%  filings.

Alibaba, which has made minority investments in a number of U.S. Technology companies, isn’t looking to acquire Zulily outright, a person familiar with the matter said.

Five-year-old Zulily went public in November 2013 at $22 a share. The shares then surged above $70 in early 2014, as the company reported fast sales growth and added new customers at a rapid pace. Its sales topped $1 billion last year, making it one of the fastest retailers to reach that milestone.

But Zulily’s shares have plunged this year in the wake of disappointing quarterly reports that showed sharply decelerating sales growth and difficulty holding on to customers, many of whom aren’t returning to Zulily’s website after making a first purchase.

Zulily’s shares closed at $13.30 on Friday, down 43% so far this year but off a record low of $9.09 touched this past week. The company’s market capitalization is now close to $1.5 billion.

ChannelSight signs ecommerce technology deal with Mondelez

Irish technology firm ChannelSight has signed a partnership with Mondelez International that will see the multinational company use its ecommerce technology to drive sales.

ChannelSight allows brands to add “buy it now” buttons to its product pages, social media video advertising and other online campaigns, linking to retailers that stock the products.

“What’s cutting edge is what we’ve developed for after the customer clicks the buy-it-now button,” said ChannelSight chief executive John Beckett. Customers are presented with a list of relevant retailers that stock the product. This list is compiled through ChannelSight’s technology rather than partnerships struck with the retailers.

“It’s not reliant on feeds from the retailer,” he said.

The company has developed technology that crawls retailers’ sites, and even if they are using different information or a slightly different image from the brand’s official one, it will recognise the product and add it to the list.

Mr Beckett said conversion rates from advertisements can increase, while the retailer can also gain valuable data such as what ads drive the most interest and lead to sales.

Mondelez, which owns brands such as Cadbury and Oreo, has already piloted the technology in 20 markets with more than 100 retailers, and now plans to add the buy-it-now buttons to media platforms across 25 markets, linking to more than 130 retailers’ websites.

“As a global company, we’re looking at converting all our media investments into buying opportunities for consumers by driving ecommerce transactions at key retailers’ websites. This partnership is a crucial step . . . to help accelerate growth through ecommerce,” said Bonin Bough, chief media and ecommerce officer at Mondelez International. “By turning more of our branded content into buying opportunities for consumers, we’ll also continue to improve our return on investment and this will help fuel growth for our power brands.”

ChannelSight was established by Mr Beckett and chief technology officer Kieron Dundon in 2013 and has offices in Ireland, Greece and Romania. The company’s account management team is based in Dublin, with its development team in Romania. Mr Beckett said this was primarily due to the availability of the talent needed to develop its products.

It is in the process of raising €3 million in funding, which will fund expansion. “We expect to extend our growth next year,” Mr Beckett said.

Despite the lack of a sales and marketing team, it has already worked with major brands such as Philips, Bosch-Siemens and P&G.

GO Firms struggle with digital marketing

Australian accounting firms are missing out on business because of poor digital marketing practices, according to the 2015 Digital Strategy Benchmark Report.

The report, released by branding inbound marketing agency Talking Brand, shows common gaps in key areas of digital marketing such as content marketing, lead generation, lead nurturing and brand clarity.

Measuring 100 top accounting firms’ performance against eight digital marketing foundations, the report revealed a number of basic shortfalls.

Eighty-four per cent of top firms don’t use marketing automation technology, only 55 per cent blog and just 28 per cent have a mobile responsive website.

In addition, just 30 per cent of firms have a clear brand value proposition.

The report also highlights that many of the top 100 accounting firms are sitting on a ‘content marketing goldmine’ but are not taking advantage of this.

Talking Brand principal Amanda Falconer urged firms to move quickly to plug the digital gaps as well as leverage their enormous content marketing potential.

“The partnership structure of many of these firms can make change slow and difficult. However, these digital gaps are only going to grow,” Ms Falconer said.

“I believe that as older partners retire, lack of loyalty to what firms stand for will expose brand weakness. At the same time, other firms will be forging ahead and attracting new clients, with modern marketing tactics and techniques.”

Ms Falconer said the report reveals these digital marketing gaps at a time when the accounting industry is already facing a raft of digital challenges, including commodification of compliance services, automation of key job roles and move to client self-service.

5 Digital Marketing Tips You Can Do In 5 Minutes Or Less To Improve Your Business

Here at ReachLocal, we love small businesses and doing all we can to support their success. And since it was just Small Business Week, we wanted to wrap up the week with five easy things you can do to help improve your business in five minutes or less. You can check these off your to-do list quickly, and together these important marketing tips can make a big impact on your business’ success.

1. Run your website URL through Google’s mobile-friendly checker.

In case you missed it, last month Google made a huge mobile update to their search algorithm. Appropriately nicknamed “Mobilegeddon,” this update can negatively impact your business website’s mobile search rankings if your site isn’t mobile-friendly.

5-Minute Tip: Check how mobile-friendly your website is by clicking here.

What’s next? If you discover that your website isn’t mobile-friendly and need a site that is, it’s probably time to invest in a mobile responsive website build specifically for local businesses, like a ReachSite.

2. Search for your business on your smartphone’s map app.

Did you know that Google Maps and Apple Maps rank #5 and #11 respectively in one study’s look at the top 15 mobile apps used by U.S. smartphone owners? Given the popularity of these apps from mobile users, you want to ensure that your business information that appears in search results on these and other map apps is correct and up to date.

5-Minute Tip: Take out your smartphone and search for your business using your phone’s map app. Does your business name and other information like your address, phone number, and hours appear in the search result? If so, review this information for any errors.

What’s next? If you do find any incorrect information, you’ll need to claim and manage all your local listings. To start, you can edit your listings by first claiming your Google+ Local business page via the Google My Business dashboard. This will correct any information that’s inaccurate for Google maps. Once you have your page up, you’ll be able to revise your business listing information. This will help the Google Maps app to pull in your revised information.

You can update any incorrect information in Apple Maps via Apple Maps Connect. And because Apple Maps pulls in business information like reviews from Yelp pages, you also want to ensure you’ve claimed your Yelp page. And if you have a Yelp page already, be sure the information is correct.

3. Google your business on desktop and/or mobile.

Googling your business name on your desktop and mobile phone browser, like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, is also an important way to review what information about your business pops up in a search result — and that what does appear is correct and up-to-date.

5-Minute Tip: Google your business name on your desktop or laptop computer and your smartphone so you can review your business information in the search results. It’s important to realize that search results will differ depending on whether you use a desktop or mobile device, because the algorithms that serve up these results differ, sometimes drastically.

(Pro tip: Use a browser like Chrome’s “incognito window” so you can get neutral search results about your business, rather than results based on your previous search history. Learn more about the best way to Google your business name here.)

Ideally, the following should appear in the organic search results:

*Your business website

*Your social media and review pages (for example: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Yelp)

*Your Google Maps results

*Your business listings in other online directories

Links to other content and articles about or by your business

Then ask yourself:

*Does my business name appear in organic search results?

*Is the information that appears up-to-date?

*Do I have positive reviews and ratings?

*Can I see my business website correctly on my smartphone? (In other words, are the images loading? Does copy get cut off?)

What’s Next? If your business name doesn’t appear very often (or at all) in the organic search results, it’s an indication that you should rethink your web precence and search engine optimization strategy.

And in the case of your claimed social media and business pages, ensure they have the correct spelling of your business name and that they are optimized to include important information about your business, because small errors on these could keep them from showing up in search results.

If you have trouble viewing your business website on your smartphone, it’s an indication that your site isn’t mobile-friendly. Want to get a mobile-friendly website but not sure where to start? Learn how a solution like ReachSite could help.

4. Check your voicemail so you can call back a hot lead.

Studies show that businesses who respond quickly are more likely to win over the lead. So, improve your likelihood of closing more sales by making sure there aren’t prospects waiting for follow up in your voicemail queue.

5-Minute Tip: Stop what you’re doing and call back the last prospect who has reached out to your business that you haven’t closed a sale with. Consumers often choose the business that calls them back first, so try to be that business!

What’s Next? If following up immediately with prospects is challenging given your daily responsibilities, download this guide to learn how ReachEdgeTM software lead conversion can help you with instant new lead alerts you can get straight to your mobile phone, making follow up quick and easy.

5. Call back one lead in your email inbox.

As a business owner, it’s safe to say you love it when new prospects and leads call your business. But what about when they email? When is the last time you checked the email connected to your website or online advertising? Are there any leads sitting in your inbox you can follow up with today?

5-Minute Tip: Pick a lead from your email and contact them back before the end of the day.

Based on their interests and needs, call your lead back if they’ve given you their phone number and let them know which products or services you offer that can help them. If you don’t have their phone number, then follow up with a quick email.

What’s Next? Download this ebook to learn how ReachEdge lead conversion software can help to convert more of your leads into customers.

As Small Business Week wraps, we want to say thank you to all of the local businesses out there helping to provide jobs and keep our economy strong!
