Mario vs. Mickey: Can Nintendo Help Universal Studios Take On Disney?

Comcast's  (NASDAQ: CMCSA  ) Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Fla., has had a tremendous run of success with its two attractions based on the Harry Potter franchise.

Though the company licenses rather than owns these characters, it secured a long-term deal that led to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The rides, shops, and themed areas associated with the boy wizard were a key part of why the company's theme parks brought in $651 million during the first quarter, up 33.7% from $487 million in the same period last year. The parks' operating cash flow also reached $263 million in the quarter, a 54.6% year-over-year increase from $170 million.

This, the company wrote in its earnings report, reflected "higher guest attendance and per capita spending, driven by the continued success of Orlando's The Wizarding World of Harry Potter -- Diagon Alley."

Now, Comcast's theme park division plans to build on its Harry Potter success by working with another set of fictional characters, those made popular by Nintendo (NASDAQOTH: NTDOY  ) .

What is happening?

Nintendo, which has been quite protective of its characters (well, aside from the awful Super Mario Bros. movie) has licensed its stable to Universal Studios for use in its theme parks. The two companies have released few details about what this actually means, but Universal Orlando executive Tom Schroder announced it on the theme park's blog last week:

I'm thrilled to share that Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts today announced plans to bring the world of Nintendo to life at Universal theme parks.

Together, these two storytelling giants will create spectacular, dedicated experiences based on Nintendo's wildly popular games, characters and worlds.

The agreement brings two icons of entertainment together and represents a significant partnership for Nintendo as it expands the reach and popularity of its characters and intellectual property.
Will that mean a life-size Mario Kart game or perhaps a Legend of Zelda adventure? Neither side has offered any specifics, but Schroder promised that it would be big:

Nintendo has created remarkable and imaginative worlds filled with captivating stories and beloved characters.

Now, for the first time, those stories and characters will be brought to life in entirely new ways -- only at Universal theme parks.

The immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal's theme parks and will feature Nintendo's most famous characters and games.

Access to these characters gives Universal a lot to play with and the ability to create attractions that appeal to wide stretches of the population. Nintendo has always been the most family-friendly of the gaming companies, and its biggest stars should fit in well with the Universal parks, which, in addition to the Harry Potter attractions (in Orlando only), have rides themed to various Marvel characters and movie franchises including Shrek, Men in Black, Twister, and more.

Why does this matter?

Disney (NYSE: DIS  )  has a major theme park advantage over Universal because it has a seemingly endless vault of characters to use -- aside from the quirk that the House of Mouse can't use its own Marvel characters because Universal licensed them for U.S. theme parks before Disney bought the company.

Disney also owns Pixar, which produces a movie or two each year with theme park potential, and its own animation division riding high on the massive success of Frozen (for which a ride is being built in Orlando's Epcot Center). Add in Star Wars, a longtime Disney theme parks license that the company now owns in full, and it's clear Universal has to play catch up.

Partnering with Nintendo gives the company a new array of characters that are familiar to audiences of all ages and have storylines that lend themselves well to video games. Mario Kart might be the most obvious example, but the Nintendo catalog has many other properties worth exploiting.

Imagine a Wave Race 64 ride at the rumored new Universal Orlando water park, or a Donkey Kong-based attraction at one of the other parks. This deal with Nintendo is not just an answer to Frozen but a good counter to Disney's plans to dramatically increase its Star Wars park content. This agreement builds on the Harry Potter buzz and keeps Universal's parks exciting as fans wait to see which rides are developed and how the company incorporates Mario, Link, and the rest of the Nintendo gang.

Nintendo is bringing its its classic gaming competition back from the dead

Nintendo is trying to drum up hype before next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the world's biggest showcase for all the big consumer games coming out in the next year.

So, in the lead-up to that event, the Japanese gaming company is bringing back the "Nintendo World Championships," which hasn't been a thing in 25 years.

Nintendo announced the news in a goofy video, where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime plays a bunch of old Nintendo games to train for the two-week-long gaming tournament starting in late May.

If you have no idea what the Nintendo World Championships are, don't worry. I had never heard of them until watching Nintendo's video.

Each Nintendo GameCube weighs five pounds, five ounces. Step it up, Reggie!

Only Nintendo diehards remember the 1990 Nintendo World Championships, the first and only time Nintendo held a cross-country competition to find the best Nintendo gamers in the US.

(Ignore the fact it's called "World" Championships, not "US" Championships.)

Nintendo toured various US cities and had local players test their skills by playing certain portions of major Nintendo games like "Super Mario Bros." and "Tetris," which were all crammed into a specially-made gaming cartridge for these events. The winners of the local contests were flown out to Hollywood to compete against players their own age to win incredible prizes, including a 40-inch TV and a Geo Metro convertible! Wowza!

Let's hope Nintendo brings back the Geo Metro convertible as a possible prize in the 2015 World Championships.

Nintendo is pretty mum on details for this year's World Championship - all we know is that qualifying rounds will begin May 30 at Best Buys in major US cities, and the winners from those events, as well as a few invited competitors (probably the winners from the 1990 World Championship, and maybe some surprise guests), will compete at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on June 14 to be crowned "Nintendo World Champion."
That final championship event will be live streamed online.

Nintendo says it will offer more details about the Nintendo World Championships in the coming weeks, including which games will be played and the possible prizes.

The short-term goal of the event is to build hype for E3, which begins two days after the Nintendo World Championships end. On June 16, Nintendo will hold its "digital event," which will presumably include a ton of announcements about the Wii U and 3DS handheld. Nintendo did something a bit similar last year: It held a "Super Smash Bros." invitational tournament before E3 began, and decided to forgo a formal press event in favor of one of these "digital events."

Still, if popular, Nintendo might consider making its World Championships an annual event. Competitive gaming, also known as eSports, is becoming incredibly popular in the US, and this would be a great way for Nintendo to celebrate this particular demographic while showcasing some of its classic games. Personally, I can't wait to learn more about this tournament, and watch the June 14 tournament.

Apple, A123 Close to Settling Battery Hiring Lawsuit

Apple and electric battery maker A123 Systems are close to settling a legal dispute over claims that the smartphone and computer maker, which is also looking into building an electric vehicle, poached A123 employees to build a large-scale battery unit.

A123, which makes batteries that are used in electric cars, sued Apple in February in Massachusetts federal court, claiming that around June 2014 Apple began aggressively poaching A123 engineers tasked with leading some of the company's most critical projects. Apple denied the claims.

The Waltham, Mass.-based battery maker disclosed in court papers Monday that the parties have reached an agreement to settle the case and are working out the final details.

Neither company immediately responded to requests for comment. Lawyers for Apple did not immediately respond, while A123 lawyer Michael Rosen declined to comment.

A123 Systems is a pioneering industrial lithium-ion battery maker, which was backed by a $249 million US government grant. It filed for bankruptcy in 2012 and has been selling off assets.

The case in U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts is A123 Systems LLC vs. Apple Inc et al., 15-10438.

Apple in March had asked for the civil lawsuit by A123 systems to be dismissed, saying the firm's claims were too speculative to proceed, according to a court filing.

Prior to its request for dismissal, Apple had asked for an extension to respond to the lawsuit because the two companies were exploring a settlement. The latest filing did not provide any update on those talks.

New 'iPhone 6s' details leak

A new colour, better camera and more processing power are among the features Apple fans can expect in the next batch of iPhones, according to the first substantial leak of information ahead of the phones' reveal.

The devices that will likely launch in September as the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus – the improvements appear too slight to corroborate the rumour of a full-fledged iPhone 7 – also take some inspiration from Apple's first wearable device, the Apple Watch.

KGI Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo – who has a history of accurately reporting Apple device specifications before they're officially revealed – detailed the changes in a note seen by enthusiast news site Apple Insider.

The new iPhones will come in "rose gold", like the Apple Watch, according to Kuo. It's unclear whether this will replace the existing gold colour and whether it will be actual gold ($24,000 phone to go with your watch, madam?) or merely a tint.

The leak also indicates some slight performance boosts and hardware upgrades for the new handsets, including a 12 megapixel primary camera (up from 8 megapixels), 2 gigabytes of RAM (up from the 1 gigabyte used since the iPhone 5), an additional microphone (presumably for noise cancellation) and an upgrade to a vague new processor Apple will probably call the A9.

There will also be modest improvements to the Touch ID sensor, Kuo said.

Most significantly, the "Force Touch" technology seen on the Apple Watch and new Macbook – which gives surfaces the ability to detect how hard you're pressing on a screen – will apparently be used to allow a greater range of touch inputs on the new phones.

"Force Touch can enrich user experience due to more input methods and support of handwritten signatures, which is beneficial for expanding the commercial market," Kuo said, according to Apple Insider.

The design of the devices may be in for some tweaking as well, with Kuo claiming the larger phone in particular will be built with a new design and materials, specifically to avoid accidental damage like that seen in the "bendgate" social phenomenon.

The larger phone is also apparently being considered for a scratch-resistant sapphire glass cover, but only if certain difficulties in the manufacturing and design can be overcome.

In what may be a concern to some, there was no mention from Kuo of any improvements to the iPhones' maligned battery life.

Windows 10 Editions Announced; Windows Phone to Become Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft ahead of the scheduled summer release of the Windows 10 (for PCs), has revealed the various editions of the new OS. The company on Wednesday via its official blog announced the editions: Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise.

Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft, recently confirmed that Microsoft was "on track" for a summer release of Windows 10 for PCs, followed by versions for mobiles and tablets. Unfortunately, the company is yet to reveal an exact time frame for the Windows 10 release. The Redmond giant as of now has revealed that its new OS will be available in summer in 190 countries and 111 languages.

(Also see: Microsoft Explains Why Windows 10 Will Be the Last Version of the OS)

Microsoft says that the different Windows editions are tailored for various device families and uses. Windows 10 Home will be the consumer-focused desktop edition and will be available for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1 devices.

It will feature Microsoft's personal digital assistant, Cortana alongside the Microsoft Edge browser; Continuum tablet mode (for touch-capable devices); Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint login, and will come preloaded with a range of universal Windows apps such as Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video.

For complementing Windows 10 Home, Microsoft has the Windows 10 Pro edition, which is a desktop edition for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1 devices. It will come with same features as Windows 10 Home; though it will include additional features for the needs of small businesses. The company touts that Windows 10 Pro will be ideal for organisations supporting Choose Your Own Device (CYOD) programs.

Windows 10 Mobile, the new official name of the Windows Phone platform, has been designed to cater touch-based devices like smartphones and small tablets. Similar to Windows 10 Home, it will feature various universal Windows apps as well as touch-optimised version of Office.

Microsoft, as promised earlier, has announced that the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro will be available as a free upgrade to qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It's worth noting that the free upgrade is only available in the first year after launch.

Windows 10 Enterprise in addition to Windows 10 Pro offerings adds advanced features targeting medium and large sized organisations.

"Windows 10 Enterprise also supports the broadest range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management. It will be available to our Volume Licensing customers, so they can take advantage of the latest innovation and security updates on an ongoing basis. With Windows 10, Enterprise customers will also have access to the Long Term Servicing Branch as a deployment option for their mission critical devices and environments," notes Microsoft's Tony Prophet, Corporate Vice President, Windows and Search Marketing.

Other Windows 10 versions include Windows 10 Education targeted to schools (including staff, administrators, teachers and students) and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise, which will be a complete solution from Microsoft for business customers. There will be a Windows 10 IoT Core edition as well.

"There will also be versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industry devices like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals and industrial robotics and Windows 10 IoT Core for small footprint, low cost devices like gateways... We are making strong progress with Windows 10, and we are on track to make it available this summer. And because we have built Windows 10 to be delivered as a service, this milestone is just the beginning of the new generation of Windows. Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses," Prophet added.

Google Fit updated with new features; now estimates calories burned

Google Fit, an Android app, which was released last year, to track your fitness and workouts was missing one key feature – calorie counts. The app is now finally updated by Google and brings in many new additions and is available on the Google Play Store.

According to Android Official Blog, the updated app will now calculate distance and calories burned based on a user’s profile. Users need to make sure that their profile has correct information about gender, height and weight for the estimates. The updated timeline will now offer a detailed activity about levels and exercises through days, weeks or months.

The update makes the app more user-friendly for those who use Android Wear watch as well. Google Fit displayed on the smartwatch will now show the duration of your workout done towards your desired goal.

A new Google Fit widget has been introduced as well which can be pinned onto your smartphone’s homescreen which will constantly remind the user about their activity. The same function will work on an Android Wear watch as well.

New smartphone uses iris scanning to replace passwords in Japan

Biometrics have changed the way we use smartphones, but they haven't really revolutionized it, yet. Being able to unlock your smartphone with a fingerprint is convenient, but it has become so commonplace that the feature doesn't stand out anymore.

One of the latest smartphones due to hit Japan this summer sets itself apart from the crowd by allowing users to unlock, sign in to apps, and go shopping using only their eyes. That's right, the iris-scanning technology that was once relegated to sci-fi movies and the higher echelons of government security can now be held in the palm of your hands.

Japanese mobile provider, NTT Docomo, is releasing a new phone this summer, with a built-in iris scanner. The Fujitsu Arrows NX F-04G uses iris recognition to replace phone passwords, and can even be used to send payments when shopping from your smartphone.

The smartphone uses a front-facing infrared camera and an infrared LED light to illuminate the user's eyes, verifying their unique iris pattern. Besides biometrics, the Android device runs Lollipop 5.0, has 32 GB of storage, 3 GB RAM, and a 5.2-inch QHD display.

Unfortunately for stateside smartphone users, the Arrows NX F-04G is probably going to be a release unique to Japan. China also has an iris-scanning smartphone with the Vivo X5 Pro, which launched yesterday. Other companies like Samsung are reportedly working on iris-detecting smartphones, but we're unlikely to see anything pop up for a while.

Microsoft: Cortana will appear just in 'select markets' at Windows 10 launch

Microsoft may have formally announced the various versions of Windows 10, tailored for consumers, business and mobile. But buried in the fine print is an important detail: One of the key features, Cortana, won’t be immediately available everywhere Windows 10 is sold.

Microsoft outlined the six major versions of Windows 10 in a blog post on Tuesday. They'll include Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Home, and Windows 10 Mobile, plus the enterprise versions: Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise and Windows 10 Education.

Under Windows 10 Home, the very first “new innovation” that Microsoft corporate vice president Tony Prophet listed was the Cortana digital assistant, along with the Edge browser and universal apps. Windows 10 Pro will also incorporate Cortana, as will Windows 10 Mobile, where the digital assistant first launched as a feature of Windows Phone.

But buried at the bottom of the blog post is a major caveat: “Cortana will be available on Windows 10 at launch in select markets.”

What this means: Windows 10 will launch in 190 countries and 111 languages, but it's one thing to translate dialog boxes and another thing to understand spoken language on the fly, as Cortana must. When the Windows Phone 8.1 Update launched last year, Cortana worked in Australia, Canada (English), France, Germany, India (English), Italy, and Spain, as well as the United States. Microsoft said that it was bringing the technology to China and the U.K. as well. But that list still excludes a number of major markets—Brazil, Russia, and Japan, to name just a few. Curtains be apparently gone to need some time to catch up.

Many questions for overseas users

Microsoft’s Cortana rollout within the United States began with Windows Phone, then moved to Windows 10 phones and PCs. Over time, those platforms have begun to talk to one another. It’s not clear whether those emerging regions will endure the same staggered rollout, or receive a holistic experience tying together Windows 10 Home, Business, and Mobile from day one. The odds seem to lean toward a staggered rollout, though.

Furthermore, while Cortana works well on Windows Phone, it’s still not the quick, efficient digital assistant I expect in the desktop version of Windows 10.

To be fair, Microsoft isn't alone in delaying spoken language support for specific regions. Wes Miller, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, noted that Apple's Siri supported English in iOS 5.0, in 2011, while support for Brazil, Russia, and Sweden, among others arrived just this year in iOS 8.3.

"Teaching a digital system a new language is incredibly complicated," Miller said. For overseas users where Cortana isn't supported, Microsoft will simply sell Windows 10 on its other features, such as the Edge browser, he said.

For now, Microsoft’s left customers with a number of questions. A Microsoft spokeswoman declined to comment further, noting that Microsoft would soon provide more details around Cortana and the features of each version of Windows 10.

Nintendo World Championships Return After 25 Years

In 1990 Nintendo had its first and only World Championships, but the battle for Mario-related glory returns this June.

Yes, the Nintendo World Championships are coming back after 25 years and the qualifying rounds will be held at Best Buy locations around the U.S. on May 30. Regional winners will move on to the championship, which will be held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on June 14.

Nintendo hasn’t revealed which games will be included in the tournament, but the original contest included portions of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. So chances are there will be some updates to that line up.

The first championship was inspired in part by The Wizard, a 1989 film starring Fred Savage, Christian Slater and Jenny Lewis.

Check out the promotional video below showing Nintendo America COO Reggie Fils-Aime announcing his idea to bring back the games and compete in them himself. He changes his mind of course, but not after some serious gamer preparation.

Google I/O 2015 app is live, go make your schedules

In just a few weeks, two to be exact, Google's main developer conference will be taking place. And to prepare attendees as well as interested onlookers, the company has launched a couple of tools, the last bit being the annual Google I/O app. Both a virtual ticket to the I/O world as well as a reference for app designers, this I/O 2015 incarnation lets you draw up your own schedule for the two-day event, mix and match sessions, and even review the highlights of the previous years.

All the strappings of usual I/O app can be found here. On first launch, the app asks if you will be attending in person or through virtual channels and will change the sessions and information available to match the case. The schedule you tailor to your own tastes and time will be synced with the I/O 2015 web app as well as your Google Calendar if you so wish.

The app already lists the sessions that are already scheduled, though not all of them give the fine details of what's in store. Obviously, there will be Android-related talks, revolving particularly on wearables, cars, and the TV.

We've seen some references to Android for Work and we might very well hear about Android M, too. Gaming seems also to be a big thing this year, both on the small and the large with Android TV and Google Cast. Google seems to be making some room for virtual reality but has none for Google Glass. No hints of Project Ara either, though there is plenty of room for surprises.

As before, the Google users the I/O app to also showcase best practices in Android app development, with source code to the app released later on for developers to dissect and study. Aside from the latest Material Design guidelines, this year's app also focus on a Google Now resemblance, with information cards that collect similar content together. Somewhat ironically, there is no direct way to search through all available content, leaving users to fiddle with filters, at least in places where they are available.

Google I/O 2015 takes place May 28 to 29 in San Francisco. Some sessions will be streamed live, which will be indicated in the mobile app for those not attending in person.
