Building Links to Your "About Us" Page

One of the most critical parts of your site, the "About Us" page (sometimes known as History, What We Do, Who We Are, etc.) is oftentimes neglected when it comes to generating links. However, with its potential to sell your site to a visitor, it may be worth paying a bit more attention to these days.

First off, let’s look at three big brands' About Us pages to see how many linking domains they have:

1. Copyblogger’s About Us page has 139 referring linking domains. The message here is that they practice what they preach.

Now those are huge brands doing totally unique things, but there’s still a chance for you, even if you get only a handful of good links.

So look at these guys for an example of fewer links:

1. Zaycon Foods has seven linking domains. Not too shabby.

2. SEO Chicks has 10 linking domains. (Disclaimer: I’m a cofounder of this site.)

3. Press 53 has 14 linking domains.

Not a great amount for either one, but still, most of those links are very natural and that’s a good thing!

A couple of key things to consider, though:

Should you do outreach for links to your About Us page?
Should you socialize it?
I have built links to clients' About Us pages before, but it’s definitely not been a large part of what we’ve done. To be honest, in many cases I’d find it awkward to do outreach and ask for links to that page unless it was done in a very relevant manner as I’ll show you below.

Example 1

Let’s say you offer heirloom seeds by mail. You started the company last year because you live in a remote area without any big garden centers and you’ve grown up planting heirlooms. Some of your seeds are actually from plants that your mother planted. You donate 10 percent of each order to a local charity.

What site would want to link to your About Us page?

A site with a post listing companies who donate part of the purchase price to charity.

A site with a post about interesting About Us pages.

A site with a post discussing the trend for companies to give back to the community

A site with a post about start-ups.

A site with a post about how gardening can bring you closer to your family.

Example 2

You are a local vet. Unlike many vets (at least ones around here), you treat chickens and offer home visits for all your clients. You do this because you noticed that there weren’t many vets treating chickens and because you realized that it was difficult for many of your oldest clients to bring their pets in for routine checkups.

What site would link to your About Us page?

Chicken forum site on a resource page about which vets treat chickens.

Local urban chicken site with a page listing which vets will treat chickens.

Site with a post talking about how more doctors and vets are making house calls.

Local senior citizen services site listing resources for pet health.

Site showcasing avian and/or farm vets.

The key is to have unique and relevant info on your About Us page. If you don’t have a hook or a story, you aren’t going to be very successful with this most likely. Everyone likes a good story.

Although I did mention some ways to intentionally go after links to these pages, one of the things I like best about a good About Us page is that the naturally generated links tend to be exactly thatnatural. People don’t tend to link to these pages with over-optimized keywords, which is a huge selling point for me.

You should definitely check out some of the great resources that showcase fantastic About Us pages and can help you create a great one for yourself, so I’ll leave you with the following resources, but if you have anything to add I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Content Marketing & SEO: The Bigger Picture

Working to integrate your SEO and content marketing efforts? Columnist Trond Lyngbø discusses the benefits and challenges of marrying these two disciplines and explains how to succeed.

SEOs have long wondered how blog posts from Bufferapp consistently topped search engines and attracted huge audiences for free… until their content team drew back the curtains and revealed what went on behind the scenes.

Their SEO wasn’t just about traffic, conversions and revenue. Like every smart and successful marketing team, their success was based on content planning and content promotion.

In other words, by linking SEO to an effective content marketing strategy, a fairly new entrant into a hyper-competitive niche dominated search results and built a powerful brand. This report will show how you can achieve similar results in your industry.

SEO Is More Than Just Traffic, Conversions & Revenue

There are 4 key elements to an SEO plan developed around a content marketing strategy:

Find out what people want and give it to them.

Use retargeting lists to communicate with them, even after they leave your site.
Make special price offers on your product or service if prospects act now.

Evolve a smart content marketing plan to build content that pulls in your target customers.
If you look carefully, there’s nothing there which is “click/traffic” focused. All those tactical SEO elements exist, but grow really powerful when integrated into a bigger plan.

Content marketing is not paid content disguised as editorial content.
Everyone knows organic search is important to marketing strategy. Search marketers are aware of content marketing as a tactic to engage target audiences and improve search rankings. But still, in many cases, their marketing fails. Why?

What Leaders Must Know About Content Marketing & SEO

Content marketing is not paid content disguised as editorial content.

Done correctly, content marketing is an excellent way to build a relationship with customers. A well-implemented content strategy establishes trust and authority in the market. It positions your company in the middle of the research and buying cycle, so that you can take control of what they see, read, think and do.

Being found on organic search results and attracting traffic to your site makes it possible to engage people and convert them into fans and customers. And all those clicks and traffic from Google results are free.

The crucial concept behind effective content marketing, then, is to tell stories that people find interesting.

Your content should not be perceived as “marketing” or “selling.” You’ll sell more by NOT selling! While your content is designed to eventually develop awareness, close sales and create advocacy for your brand, it should stay focused on helping, creating value for customers, and meeting their needs.

This way more people will find your content, giving you wider reach and impact. Your content marketing strategy helps differentiate you from the crowd.

Content Marketing Lets You Dominate A Niche & Become The Market Leader

The business case for content marketing is clear: If you want to build your brand to become the market leader you must OWN the niches in your market.

You can achieve this goal by using keyword research and SEO analysis performed by an experienced consultant to tap into the holy grail of search behavior – a search user’s needs, questions and intent.

From current and historical data, you can find out what individuals…

.are concerned about (fears)

.are curious to know (interests)

.are seeking solutions for (problems)

.are dreaming about having (desires)

As discussed on a recent Moz Whiteboard Friday, “Know What Your Audience Wants Before Investing in Content Creation and Marketing,” it’s best to find out what your customer wants before investing in content.

Putting The Cart Before The Horse

Clients sometimes ask: “Why isn’t content marketing working for us?”

The answers are often obvious — and common across many companies and industries. Here are some of the reasons for content marketing being ineffective, and some simple ways to avoid those mistakes.

1. Weak Content Planning

Be smart about creating content. Planning your content is key. There’s nothing “new” about content marketing, even though it’s now a popular buzz word. SEO consultants have spoken about it for years, just calling it by other names. Whatever we call it, planning it is important.

2. Failing To Integrate Content Marketing Into Digital Channels

Many organizations fail to plan their digital channel marketing. Their process of ordering fresh content is seriously flawed. Investments should be greater in stories that people are actually interested in, and content that demonstrably converts better.

3. Not Realizing the Difference Between Advertising and Marketing/Content

Some organizations think content marketing is about

.producing a piece of content

.having people to see it

.booking orders from convinced prospects

But really, content marketing is about

.connecting with your audience

.building trust

.becoming an authority

.being the one that they remember when it’s time to order

.gaining mindshare as the go-to-guy or company

If your current content marketing strategy revolves around writing and distributing content
advertorials,” then it’s time for a rethink. Creating a mashup of advertising and content will only result in a low-performing piece published under the alibi of “content marketing”. You’ll pay money for advertising to lead traffic to the content, which dies down in a few weeks when the campaign ends.

Why is this practice so common, especially when it doesn’t work?

4. Lack of Knowledge About Digital Marketing

It’s easy for an agency or consultant to pander to a client’s demand for new buzzwords and services, without having to take the time and trouble to understand how the business really works.

I’m not accusing some agencies or consultants of intentionally trying to fool someone into investing in an inefficient model. But lacking the right knowledge and expertise still leads to failure, even if the actions are taken with the best purpose and intentions in mind.

Lack of knowledge about digital marketing is a problem. CMOs and strategy directors should know reasonably well how Google works, and understand intersections between organic search and other marketing in the organization’s overall strategy. Unfortunately, many are outdated when it comes to digital marketing.

This leads to their companies implementing strategies that an expert would quickly identify as useless or counter-productive. Silo-thinking condemns their content marketing strategy to mediocrity. All the while, their competitors are thriving and gaining market share.

To avoid this, you must:

Take research and planning seriously
Involve an experienced SEO consultant to uncover what people want
Get access to valuable historical search data
Ensure the content you’re creating takes you closer to your business goals.

5. Shortsightedness and Ad Hoc Work Patterns

Online digital content has a long shelf-life. But many organizations view their content marketing through a “campaign lens”.

Prioritizing and delegating are crucial skills for a CMO or strategy director. Busy with many other things, most take an ad hoc approach, focusing for a week on one thing, and on something else the week after. Whenever the going gets tough, or results are not as they hoped for, someone cracks the whip – and they become more confused and disorganized.

Instead, they should step off the hamster-wheel, review the situation and focus on whatever has worked for them already. Getting a content marketer and SEO consultant together to prioritize areas to focus on will make all activity more cost-efficient.

6. Content Overload

In the content glut of the World Wide Web, it’s tough to differentiate yourself. SEO is a great way to find more effective ways to reach your target audience and stand out from the crowd.

Content marketing is less about “content” and more about “marketing.”

If you take a shortcut and hire content writers to throw something together, and sprinkle some SEO “secret sauce” over the mess, you’ll only get a temporary quick-fix — and a bad one at that. Consulting experts at content marketing and SEO can help spot opportunities and craft content that’s interesting to customers.

Businesses should think about content marketing as inbound marketing, rather than push marketing. You must get involved, stay focused, and be consistent over time. Content marketing is a marathon, not a sprint.

7. “Campaign” Thinking

Content marketing can’t be a campaign that you launch whenever you want to sell more products. Ordering a batch of articles or advertorials just before the campaign goes live leaves little time for research and planning. Precious opportunities are lost.

Once the campaign ends, the content is forgotten — only to repeat the cycle next year. Content planning can keep your content relevant for longer, make it stronger over time, rank it better and beat your competitors on search results. That makes content marketing much more effective — and profitable.

8. Making Content The Goal

Too many organizations jump directly to production and churn out content without researching and planning it. As a result, they skip over the most important part: what the market and their prospective buyers actually want and need.

Doing this is naive and ignorant. Google has vast treasure troves of data about search volumes, trends, seasonal changes and popular search terms. Tapping this data to tailor and structure your content marketing is smart and helps you serve clients well.

Content marketing is not about what you want people to know– it’s about the needs and interests of the customer.

Your content marketing clock should tick on your customers’ schedule, not your own. Content marketing is about building and strengthening a relationship with your customers. So it shouldn’t be mistaken for advertising.

How To Find What People Want?

There are many tools to guide you.

Google Keyword Planner is a good starting point, where you can type in keywords and discover how popular they are.

Keywordtool.io is a logical second step, because it gives you more specific information about searcher intent through long tail keyword phrases.

SEMrush helps study what your competitors are doing. You might get ideas to expand and broaden your approach, or go deeper into sub-niches or find new ones to explore and research.
In Conclusion

I’ll leave you with some final takeaways:

Investing in content marketing without SEO is sub-optimal. You will limit your own success and end up publishing content that no one is interested in.

Effective content marketing will help build your brand and attract more qualified leads and paying customers.

Intersections of SEO and content marketing, where experts work together, will generate better outcomes.

Evergreen content lasts for years. Traffic, leads and sales will not stop when a campaign is over, but continue for many years.

Content planning and content promotion can help you leverage the incredible power and longevity of content marketing and SEO.

Google set to raise Android privacy controls

Google is planning to give its mobile users more control over what information applications can access, people familiar with the matter said.

Google's Android operating system is set to give users more detailed choices over what apps can access, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter remains private. That could include photos, contacts or location. An announcement of the change, which would put Android closer in line with Apple's iOS, is expected for Google's developer's conference in San Francisco this month, one of the people said.

The Mountain View, California-based company last year simplified how people are informed about what an app is accessing. Users decide whether the app can be downloaded. The new settings would give users the option to pick and choose what an app can access.

Google is adding features to its mobile services as it seeks to attract users who increasingly are going online via their wireless gadgets. Android had 81 per cent of the global smartphone market in 2014 while Apple's iOS had 15 per cent, according Gartner.

Pressure is growing on Android in some parts of the world. In Europe's five largest countries, its share fell to 69 per cent in the first quarter from 72 per cent a year earlier, according to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. The share for iOS rose to 20.3 per cent from 18.6 per cent, Kantar reported.

Nintendo says Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros. DLC will come this year to keep fans engaged

Nintendo did something strange last year it made a profit. And to keep doing that going forward, it is planning more postrelease downloadable content.

The Mario company made most of its money last year thanks to the 3DS handheld system and a few major Wii U console releases like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. For the rest of 2015, the company doesn’t really have any huge releases like that left — especially now that it has delayed The Legend of Zelda Wii U to some indeterminate time in the future. So to keep fans excited, it sounds like it is going to keep supporting its biggest hits from last year with even more downloadable add-on content.

This comes from Nintendo’s annual financial report, which it released earlier this morning. In the section where the publisher talked about its future earnings, it explained that DLC factors into its strategy in a big way.

“Specifically, by sequentially introducing additional download content for blockbuster titles such as Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, we aim to keep these titles played more actively,” reads the Nintendo report.

We’ve sorta known that Nintendo would start introducing new characters and other kinds of content for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Earlier this year, the company introduced a way for fans to suggest and vote on the new characters they want to see added to the roster. The publisher now seems like it is confirming that will come at some point throughout its fiscal 2016.

But this announcement suggest that Nintendo has even more DLC in the works for Mario Kart 8. This comes after the company released two expansions that, combined, added six new characters and 16 new tracks. The second expansion just launched last month, which falls into Nintendo’s fiscal 2016. But the wording of the company’s outlook suggests this is an initiative it plans to continue moving into the future.

We’ve reached out to the company for more on this, and we’ll update with any new information.

Nintendo Joins Forces With Universal Parks And Resorts To Bring Video Games To Life

Nintendo fans, rejoice! Mario and Luigi have a new home. According to a press release, Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts are teaming up to create what might be the greatest rides imaginable. Get your Game Boy ready because it's time for a road trip.

Though the announcement didn't have concrete details on the future attractions, Wii can't wait to see which characters (hello, Yoshi and Princess Peach) and video games make an appearance. Hopefully, there will at least be a real-life Mario Kart racing track with the ability to throw banana peels and red and green shells at other racers.

The move comes at an important time for Nintendo, as the press release stated the company is trying to expand "the reach and popularity of its characters and intellectual property." It's pretty surprising that this partnership hasn't happened sooner. Now if only we had a Bullet Bill to speed up the construction process.

Uber bids for Nokia's mapping service: NYT

Ride-hailing service Uber has submitted a bid for Nokia Oyj's (NOK1V.HE) map business, HERE, for as much as $3 billion, the New York Times reported, citing people with knowledge of the offer.

Finland's Nokia said last month it had started a strategic review for HERE, a competitor to Google Maps, after announcing a takeover of network equipment rival Alcatel-Lucent (ALUA.PA).

Uber is competing against a consortium of automakers, including BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the newspaper said, citing people with knowledge of the offer.

The German automakers are teaming up with the Chinese search engine Baidu on the offer, the report said. (nyti.ms/1QrdZYU)

Uber declined to comment on the matter.

The newspaper said a private equity firm has also bid and that Nokia is expected to announce the sale of HERE by the end of May.

Facebook Use Polarizing? Site Begs to Differ

For years, political scientists and social theorists have fretted about the Internet’s potential to flatten and polarize democratic discourse.

Because so much information now comes through digital engines shaped by our preferences — Facebook, Google and others suggest content based on what consumers previously enjoyed — scholars have theorized that people are building an online echo chamber of their own views.

But in a peer-reviewed study published on Thursday in the journal Science, data scientists at Facebook report the echo chamber is not as insular as many might fear — at least not on the social network. While independent researchers said the study was important for its scope and size, they noted several significant limitations.

Worlds Apart: Social Media Deepens Partisan Divides. But Not Always.NOV. 20, 2014
Consuming the News: Americans Don’t Live in Information CocoonsOCT. 24, 2014

After analyzing how 10.1 million of the most partisan American users on Facebook navigated the site over a six-month period last year, researchers found that people’s networks of friends and the stories they see are in fact skewed toward their ideological preferences. But that effect is more limited than the worst case some theorists had predicted, in which people would see almost no information from the other side.

On average, about 23 percent of users’ friends are of an opposing political affiliation, according to the study. An average of almost 29 percent of the news stories displayed by Facebook’s News Feed also appear to present views that conflict with the user’s own ideology.

In addition, researchers said that individuals’ choices about which stories to click on had a larger effect than Facebook’s filtering mechanism in determining whether people encountered news that conflicted with their professed ideology.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to quantify these effects,” said Eytan Bakshy, a data scientist at Facebook who led the study. He said that he began the work in 2012 out of an interest in the way social networks shape how the public gets news. “You would think that if there was an echo chamber, you would not be exposed to any conflicting information,” he added, “but that’s not the case here.”

Facebook’s findings run counter to a longstanding worry about the potential for digital filtering systems to shape our world. For Facebook, the focus is on the algorithm that the company uses to decide which posts people see, and which they do not, in its News Feed.

Eli Pariser, chief executive of the viral content website Upworthy, labeled this effect the “Filter Bubble.” Some Facebook users have said they unfollow those who post content with which they disagree. And with political discussions being increasingly pitched in the run-up to next year’s presidential election, in which the Internet will be used as a primary campaign tool, the problem appeared to be getting worse.

“This shows that the effects that I wrote about exist and are significant, but they’re smaller than I would have guessed,” Mr. Pariser said in an interview about Facebook’s study.

Natalie Jomini Stroud, a professor of communications studies at the University of Texas at Austin, who was not involved in the study, said the results were “an important corrective” to the conventional wisdom.

The study adds to others that debate whether the Internet creates an echo chamber. A Pew Research Center report last year found that media outlets people name as prime information sources about politics and news are strongly correlated with their political views. Another study last year published as a working paper in the National Bureau of Economic Research analyzed Twitter usage during the 2012 election and found social media often exposed users only to opinions that match their own.

Dr. Stroud and other researchers note that Facebook’s study has limitations. It arrived at 10.1 million users by screening only for Americans older than 18 who log on to Facebook at least four out of seven days of the week, and who interacted with at least one news link during the second half of 2014. Importantly, all self-identified as liberal or conservative in their profiles. Most Facebook users do not post their political views, and Dr. Stroud cautioned those users might be more or less accepting of conflicting political views.

Criticism of the study was swift. In an article responding to the study, Zeynep Tufekci, a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said, “People who self-identify their politics are almost certainly going to behave quite differently, on average, than people who do not.” She added, “The study is still interesting, and important, but it is not a study that can generalize to Facebook users.”

Facebook’s researchers said studying those who self-report their politics was the most technically feasible way to determine users’ political affiliations, and trying to infer those from other methods would have led to greater uncertainty.

The findings are convenient for Facebook. With more than 1.3 billion users, the social network is effectively the world’s most widely read daily newspaper. About 30 percent of American adults get their news from Facebook, according to the Pew Research Center. But its editorial decisions are drafted with little transparency using the News Feed algorithm. Facebook could use the study’s results to show that the algorithm is not ruining national discourse.

Facebook said its researchers had wide latitude to pursue their research interests and to present whatever they found. The results were reviewed before publication in Science, with the journal selecting an anonymous panel of scholars unaffiliated with Facebook. Science does not disclose the identity of experts and warns reviewers to declare any financial ties that might be perceived as a conflict of interest with the study being reviewed.

Facebook also noted that this study was substantively different from one that caused an outcry last year, in which the company’s scientists altered the number of positive and negative posts that some people saw to examine the effects on mood. This study did not involve an experiment that changed users’ experience of Facebook; researchers analyzed how people use Facebook as it stands today.

For Facebook’s study, researchers first determined the point of view of a given article by looking at whether liberals or conservatives had shared it most. They found unsurprising partisan attitudes about some news sources, with Fox News stories shared mainly by conservatives and Huffington Post articles shared by liberals.

Then they measured how often feeds of users, whose identifying details had been taken out, displayed stories that conflicted with their professed ideologies, and how often they clicked on those stories.

Some academics said Facebook was always tweaking the News Feed and could easily make changes that would create a more sealed echo chamber.

“A small effect today might become a large effect tomorrow,” David Lazer, a political scientist at Northeastern University who studies social networks, wrote in a commentary on the Facebook study also published in Science. “The deliberative sky is not yet falling, but the skies are not completely clear either.”

The study — also written by Solomon Messing and Lada Adamic, who are data scientists at Facebook — presented other findings on how people of different political persuasions use the world’s largest social network.

One is that liberals live in a more tightly sealed echo chamber than conservatives, though conservatives were more selective about what they click on when they see ideologically challenging views.

About 22 percent of the news stories that Facebook presents to liberals is of a conservative bent, while 33 percent of the stories shown to conservatives presents a liberal point of view. The difference, researchers said, is that liberal users are connected to fewer friends who share views from the other side.

But liberals were only 6 percent less likely to click on ideologically challenging articles instead of ideologically consistent articles that appeared in their feed. Conservatives were 17 percent less likely to click, meaning they appeared more reluctant to indulge opposing views.

The study also raised — but did not answer — the question of what happens after people click on an article with an opposing view: Are they being persuaded by its arguments, or are they dismissing it out of hand?

“People who are really into politics expose themselves to everything,” said Diana C. Mutz, a political scientist at the University of Pennsylvania. “So they will expose to the other side, but it could be to make fun of it, or to know what they’re saying to better argue against it, or just to yell at the television set.”

A click, in other words, is not necessarily an endorsement, or even a sign of an open mind.

What makes website design startup Webydo different from Wix or Squarespace

While Wix dominates the DIY space, new companies such as the Tel Aviv-based Webydo, which just garnered $5 million in new funding, take a different approach

Following the success of DIY web template companies, new companies have surfaced in recent years to provide designers tools that promise a fully code-free web design experience. Companies such as Wix and Squarespace cater to individuals who often have no experience with design. These are the mom and pop type DIY luddites who have succumbed to the necessity of having a website.

While Wix dominates the DIY space, new companies such as the Tel Aviv-based Webydo, which just garnered $5 million in new funding, take a different approach.

“These B2C solutions, Wix and Squarespace, are wonderful for amateurs as they provide a fast, fun, and easy way to create one website, but they are not suitable for professional designers who have many clients and hundreds of sites,” Shmulik Grizim, the co-founder and CEO of Webydo, told Geektime.

Professional freelance designers and agencies must provide their clients with pixel-perfect, custom-tailored websites that effectively establish their clients’ businesses online presence. Moreover, designers’ ability to provide high quality products is part of their business model and what differentiates their service from a DIY approach.

After witnessing first-hand the dysfunctional relationship between designers and developers within the context of a given project, Grizim and his partner Tzvika Steinmetz decided to dedicate their efforts to solve and ultimately disrupt the way websites are created.

“Since the ’90s, the web was all about code creation. But now we have powerful code generators that do that for us. What we need to think about is the visual storytelling, the compositions, the user experience,” Grizim said.

As for the direction of the industry, Grizim predicts a glorious and creative future.

“I believe the web is turning into a creative medium. We spend more and more hours online and we expect our experience to have everything other mediums like TV, cinema and print provide us. We want a rich human experience online, not just data. We need designers to become what film directors are for cinema. I think the whole industry will focus on designers.”

5 Inexcusable Law Firm Website Design Mistakes

I just spent a day checking out the competition. I flipped through about 25 websites that have been launched over the past year or so by large law firms to see what’s trending and perhaps find creative inspiration. My key takeaway: today’s websites are better than ever. In fact, some were great. And none of the sites I examined were complete embarrassments.

All that said, many of the sites – some of which were created by well-known web designers for large law firms – had at least one significant shortcoming.

Below I’ve listed five of the most bothersome shortcomings I came across. Some of these shortcomings are due to the use of outdated technology. Others relate to the use of discredited web design paradigms. In my opinion, all are inexcusable for any website launching today.

Metaphorical Photos

This is a look that seemed cool in 1997 but was passĂ© by 1999. Yet, some designers still lean on these silly photos. Why? Because it’s easy. The simplest, cheapest way to design a homepage is to write a headline about the firm’s “strategic approach” and put it next to a $2 stock photo of a chess board. Or to write a headline about how “different” the firm is, and place it next to a photo of a poodle with a pink mohawk. Ugh. When I see something like this, I just think, “The designer phoned this one in.”

Overly Narrow Format

It’s remarkable to me that anyone is still designing narrow, 1024 pixel-wide sites. On any recent computer, these narrow sites look ridiculously puny and feel outdated the moment that they launch. This is because monitor resolutions have grown far beyond 1024 pixels. Even little laptops often have high-resolution displays that are over 1900 px wide.

Today’s best websites use responsive design to expand the website to fill most of the screen. I’m guessing that most web designers who are still creating sites with a width of 1024 pixels are probably not proficient in responsive design.

The Homepage Carousel

This is often a sign of marketing indecision. When a firm can’t agree on a single headline message – the easy solution is to write five messages and put them in a rotating carousel on the homepage. The problem is that five messages is four too many. It all becomes noise.

Furthermore, users hate them. A usability study out of Sweden found that an auto-rotating carousel on the homepage got clicked by only 1.96% of users. When it was changed to a static image, it got clicked by over 43% of users.

As far as I’m concerned, practically any solution is better than the homepage slider. And sometimes the best solution is no headline at all.

High School Yearbook-style Photos

Attorney portraits are, without a doubt, the single most impactful element of an attorney’s bio. Why? Because images evoke a quick and powerful emotional response in a way that written words can’t. Today’s best websites feature large, beautifully composed, well-lit photos that reveal a little bit of the attorney’s personality. Yet, there are still some firms that use rigid, formal photos that look like they were shot in the basement of Sears. It baffles me that not all firms make portraits a top priority.

Old-style Mobile Sites (mobi)

If your web designer is trying to sell you an old-fashioned “mobi” site, you should probably find a new web designer. Responsive design, the current standard for mobile compatibility, is far superior. For example, responsive design accommodates all device sizes, is much better for SEO and, unlike mobi, doesn’t use a separate web address for mobile pages (which is confusing for both users and Google).

Why isn’t everybody using responsive design? Because it isn’t easy to do right. Back in 2012, it took my firm several months of challenging design and programming to nail it.
