Don’t let your business disappear from Google mobile searches after April 21: follow these 5 steps

Given the huge increase in searches originating from mobile devices, Google has announced it will be adjusting its mobile search algorithm to favour websites that are mobile-friendly from Tuesday, 21st April.

This presents a problem for the vast majority of Australian small-to-medium businesses (SMBs), as the latest Sensis eBusiness Report data shows that only 26 per cent of them have a mobile-specific website.

Google has warned: “This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

The eBusiness Report data reinforces the importance of SMB’s upgrading their website quickly, showing that:

- 90 per cent of Australian SMBs use websites to search for information about products and services

- 82 per cent use them to place orders for products and services

- 68 per cent use them to receive payments

Google’s changes give everyone who has been thinking of upgrading their site the impetus to actually do it.

Most big businesses are fine as they often have either a separate mobile site or a mobile-responsive website. But for the 74 per cent of Australian SMB websites that are not currently mobile search friendly, the clock is ticking.

That said, there are five fairly straightforward steps every business can take to make sure these changes won’t affect web traffic and most importantly, revenue.

I recommend that every Australian business:

1. Check your analytics accounts to see how much traffic you currently receive from Google as well as other search engines.

Most websites have analytics tools you can access to provide insights into your customers’ usage patterns. This is a really simple thing to check - if you don’t have any analytics set up, I’d recommend speaking to your website developer to get it done.

2. See how much of that search engine traffic comes in from a smart/mobile/handheld device.

Chances are that traffic has increased dramatically over the past 12 months. You don’t want to risk losing that customer base.

3.Test your website on the free mobile friendly testing tool provided by Google to see whether your current site is compatible with smart devices and is usable.

Think about all the times during the day you search for something online via your mobile devices. Google is making this change so that customers get the best possible search experience from their phones or tablets.”

4.Speak to your website manager about optimising your site for mobile searches.

Google has been hinting this was going to come for a while now. They’ve been actively encouraging web developers to concentrate on developing mobile-friendly platforms since 2012.”

5.Do it before April 21!

Your website won’t implode if you don’t make this deadline, but your mobile search rankings could, and given the ever increasing use of mobile devices to find businesses, the impact on your company could be significant.
